  • Hours of Wealth is one of Ghost Reveries' quieter and more obscure tracks.
As part of the original album concept, it dealt with the aftermath of the protagonist's successful escape. The trials that the character endured - demonic rituals, possession, matricide, and chases through moors, woodlands, and deserts - created a fatigue and mistrust of everyone. The protagonist therefore chose to go into hiding.
Hours of Wealth is a strangely optimistic song. It's a realisation that purpose can be strengthened through ridding oneself of expectation. A realisation that's reached through the discomfort of solitude, distance, and anonymity.
Opeth have only played this track live 15 times - all in October 2015 - so I thought it would be fun to share their final (and in my opinion, best) performance of this rarity.
Huge thanks to nonosh and Opethtat1 for the videos, and to swijj for the audio sources. Remastering, audio editing, and matrix was done by me. Lastly, shoutout to the "Nobody knows meeee!" guy at 3:17.
Mikael Åkerfeldt - vocals and guitar
    Joakim Svalberg - keys
    Fredrik Åkesson - guitar
    Martin Mendez - bass
Martin Axenrot - air bongos at 1:25

An incredible song, one of their best ones in my opinion. Haunting and so well crafted. Exposes the more soulful and almost r'n'b shade of Mikael voice's tone. The atmosphere, the choirs, the melody, the harmony, the mellow velvet tone, the bluesy/soul vibe to it. It's so special, and rarely played live. I'll always regret not having been able to see them live on that special run of Ghost Reveries dedicated gigs, during which they played the album in its entirety. I honestly think it's their best album, most well written and varied with regard to musical influences. They were at the top of their game when they wrote it. Thank you for another delightful treat, Mr Karst.

Oh my…. From all their calmer songs this is one that always gets me right on the heart and makes me cry. It is so beautiful and melancholic and mikaels voice is perfect for it. I don’t listen to it very often because I don’t want it to lose its strength to me lol if it makes any sense, I try to keep it for very specific moments ❤ and this recording is amazing! Totally worth it 😊 thank you!!! I relate so much to the lyrics and the instrumentals... but never thought it through, now with your explanation it makes total sense to me. Thanks again :)
