Great watch, but you have to say Barry was a bit off the mark with the constant praising of Spielberg. It was a Robert Zemeckis written and directed film, and he hardly ever got a mention!
Spielberg was the brand at the time, but it seems a little wrong to have him solely in the interview and focus. You can see Co-writer Bob Gale is in the Royal Line Up so he could have sat in (BTTF was his idea).. I'm not sure if Zemeckis couldn't make it but it does paint the film as a Spielberg clone, when it was very much Z & G's baby.
I've never heard that story of BTTF being a script Zemeckis had given up on and Spielberg persuaded him to film it after Romancing The Stone. In every other source inc the making ofs on the home releases and in the Making of book, Zemeckis and co-writer Bob Gale (who Spielberg doesn't mention and who originated the idea for the film) channeled the success of Romancing as soon as the box office numbers were in to get BTTF greenlit. They themselves then asked Spielberg to Exec Produce as he was the only one who believed in them pulling off BTTF when they had no clout after a string of flops. Previously they asked him not to, being worried if BTTF flopped they'd get known as the guys who only get films made because they're Spielberg's mates, and as such they'd never get another movie made. Now they'd proved themselves to get a hit without his help, they approached him. This is shown by how soon after Romancing's release that BTTF went into pre-production. I wonder if this interview being so close to the events means this is how things actually happened. Or if Spielberg created a catchy story to tell in interviews.
How is Back to the Future only at no6 in the top ten box office list of the week??? And it had only receive it's British Royal Premiere that past week? The Brits are dumb.
If you read, you can see it says US Top Ten. BTTF was 6 there, having opened 5 months earlier. The Royal Premiere was the day of the broadcast, so the film wasn't in the UK Top Ten yet since it hadn't released to the paying public. Barry also says the No.1 film King Solomon's Mines opens in the UK in Two Weeks. Which would be impossible if this was the UK charts.
I loved this show back on the days
Dang I wanted to watch the other reviews too 😭
Awesome. Thanks
Great programme
Michael J Fox Legend 👏👏👏
