I've never agreed with the criticisms of this film. The time travel elements are not overly complex, well explained and make sense. I had no problems understanding the plot on my first viewing at my local Cannon cinema, unlike many stories featuring time travel paradoxes which can be absurdly confusing and completely illogical. It is also when of the few films I know in which the future is not portrayed as either the aftermath of a global ecological disaster or living under a totalitarian government. All in all, Part II is a fine middle segment of the Back to the Future trilogy, which sets the scene for Part III to wrap things up superbly.
Most of the criticism was because the film was ahead of its time. Unlike most 80s sequels, it doesnt just repeat the first film but has a complex plot that requires the audience to pay attention. Its dark in tone and does not have a resolution, requiring another film to finish the story. Empire Strikes Back attracted similar criticisms and also had mixed reviews when it first came out.

Wow I haven't seen this review for over 30 years! I taped this because I was so desperate to see the film I'd collect clips from wherever I could and watch them over and over again! Disagree with Barry though - I was 12 when BTTF2 came out and I was never confused by the plot. Much as I love the first one I think I've always preferred Part 2. Was so excited to see 'the future' and loved that they didn't go down the usual dystopia route! Well until they got back to the present (1985A) at least...
I was lucky enough to be taken on holiday to Universal Studios when they were shooting this. The thing I remember is all the cars. Great movie and fantastic trilogy. Filed under ‘they don’t make ‘em like they used to’.
What I really enjoyed about this movie when it came out was how it generally portrayed the future in a positive way where movies of the future up till then usually portrayed movies set in the future with a lot of gloom and doom and nuclear war.
Barry is correct in his criticism. It isn't as good as Pt1 and Pt3. It serves more as a joining chapter between two better movies. But overall it's still a fun and entertaining movie, that I'd rather watch than a lot of modern specials effect heavy, forced humour crap.
BTTF got me into Time travel movies and shows, loved it when it came out, was about 10-12 never found it confusing at all. I thought it was exciting and great original story, unlike movies today.
Actually BTTF II is my favourite movie of the trilogy BECAUSE of the complicated plot. I understood the whole changing the past storyline but I remember being confused about who the guy in the trench coat giving Marty the letter from the Doc was. I read into him too much and thought that he was going to be a major character. When I watched part III I realised that he was only a minor character but with an important role. I'm glad I first saw part III when it was first released in cinemas long long before the actual year 2015. If I had first watched it only a few years before or after 2015 it wouldn't have been as good. I wonder what people born since 2015 make of part II? BTTF was the film that first started my love, except for Dr Who, of any type of time travel Sci Fi eg movies and novels.
I actually enjoy part II the most although admittedly part I is one of the greatest movies ever made. But part II is one of the most ambitious sequels ever made. It's a pure junk food & cola binge in movie form. It was the first in the trilogy I saw so part I seemed slow & tame to me in comparison when I eventually watched it as a kid but I adore it now
8 year old me would have hated this review but at 34, I don't think I am too far apart here with Barry. I enjoy BTTF II but the characters very much take a back seat to the special effects. I know most won't agree but I think the third film is superior.
Part III has definitely improved for me as I've gotten older. And part II (at least the first 20 minutes or so) has started to look just a little bit silly. Still, it's one of the most enjoyable and rewatchable film trilogies of all time, and there's a hell of a lot of great stuff in each movie.
I used to Love Barry Norman's Film(insert date) programme.. 'And why not'...but he never liked the films I loved like BTTF2, 3... and Rocky 3 and 4!! :)
The first is a perfect piece of entertainment, "To be continued" sign and all. The only problem is the sequels. Something's gotta be done about the sequels!
Thought the film was great as was the third one but they didn't hold a candle to the first one! That 2015 looked amazing with the flying cars hoverboards etc shame the actual one we had was nothing like it 🙄 and loved that 3D Hologram of Jaws and the joke about the shark still looking fake 🤣🤣 lmfao
Part 1 is a classic. Part 2 is a completely different film--far more committed to science fiction than the first, and with an ending that at least EQUALS the ending to the first film, and that's really saying something.
The we only dodgy bit of the part 2 Was leaving his unconscious girlfriend up a lane on her own ? I was amazed this was the best they could come up with ?
The writers actually said that, had they known that there was ever going to be a sequel at all, Jennifer would not have gone with them in the DeLorean.
It's a film that's hard to enjoy as you have to think hard about what's going on to make sense of it. It's not straight forward like BTTF was. I date bet to this day there are 50 somethings still not sure about certain parts of the film.
For me, it's the weakest of the three films, but still enjoyable and joins the first and last together well enough. My 10yo daughter loves them all and won't have a bad word said about any of them!
I never cared for Barry Norman. Like most film critics, he praised nonsense and objected to anything decent. He also made the typical critic mistake of speaking in absolutes, as though there was no opinion other than his own.
Probably why he didn't go overboard about this but he loved the first one which is still a classic! Yeah he did seem to be harsh on some great films but everyone has their own opinion rightly or wrongly and he was still interesting to listen to although you couldn't always agree with him!
A 2013 Guardian article quotes Barry as saying: "I always knew that nobody's right and nobody's wrong in criticism. The only thing I could do was to make sure that whatever I said was what I really believed."
Some critics were harsh just for the sake of making themselves look intellectually critical. I didn't get that with Barry Norman. He usually seemed quite fair and gave credit where it was due.
I have never really heard a film critic that was appealing. I found Barry Norman's vocal delivery of the reviews rather dull most of the time. Mark Kermode is awful to listen to aswell. What is more they rarely ever make a film sound interesting and seem to have something bad to say about everything, as if they have a glass half empty mentality. I find if I read the synopsis, check the actors in the film & check who the director is and what films they have made previously, I can usually find a movie that will be fairly enjoyable. I rarely listen to the critics or make choices based on awards or box office or what someone else recommended.
@@gatekeeperboxing5898 I always believe in going to see the film yourself and making your own mind up about it because what the reviewer thinks or opinions are do not echo everyones
Barry Norman wasn't ready for Back to the Future part two...but I bet his kids are gonna love it!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭😭😭 lmfao 👍🏻
👏👏👏
Joker
I bet, when he went to record his show at the BBC, he DID need roads to get there.🛣️😂
So he went to see it but didn't like it so had to make like a tree and get out of there 🤣🤣🤣
Remember spending years thinking "Wow, 2015 is so far away I can't even imagine it"... and now it's 7 years ago. Crazy how fast it flew by.

One of the best sequels ever made and, its my favourite from the 3.
Omg i remember this and having it VHS taped and watched a few times waiting for the release, it makes 33 years ago seem like last year!!

Yep, saw it as a teen in the Esher Embassy and understood it perfectly on first viewing.
Canon cinemas remember them but don't think i ever went into one the closest and more local ones to me were the ABC cinemas!

@@bigredsock1 You certainly know your stuff mate had no idea they were part of Cannon and they still had ABCs until last year!
Nothing ages faster than someone's vision of the future.
Thanks for the upload. I remember watching Barry's review of this, on the repeat show. Great stuff.
This was always my favourite of the trilogy.
Appreciate the nostalgic VHS quality upload.
Which at times went back to the future

I saw the first 2 in the cinema. The first one was great, the 2nd one blew my mind! I think the 2nd one was more fun..
They were dead wrong about 2015. Except for the Cubs. And that was the most unbelievable thing in the movie.
He was right, the first is the best film by far, but it’s still a good film
Remember in 1989 when 2015 seemed like a long way off?
Thomas F Wilson is the best actor in this movie 🎥. Most of the movie simply shadow chases the original.
I used to Love Barry Norman's Film(insert date) programme.. 'And why not'...but he never liked the films I loved like BTTF2, 3... and Rocky 3 and 4!! :)
Or RoboCop. An action masterpiece!

For a minute there I thought Barry Norman had accidentally noclipped into the backrooms.
This 2015 version of the Future is what led to the world in Cyberpunk 2077 😀
I love reading comments. Has so much more information possibilities than the video. And I always throw in a comment for the fun of it 😁👍.

Surprised at some of the spoilers he gave TBH.
BTTF 2 is the best BTTF.
The problem with watching the sequel now in 2022 is that 2015 is now the past, has already happened and is a massive anti-climax lol
2015 how little did they know
Back to the future 2 has half of the first movie in it.
Actually it hardly has any, they were mostly new scenes but done or recreated to give that impression.
And STILL no hoverbaords OR flying cars! 😒

Nah, I think Barry’s off with this. It’s not as good as the 1st but still a blast.
I loved the second one, went pictures countless times to watch it. But i agree the first one was a better film.
The first was definitely the best one but all 3 films were great.
Ruin the plot of the film 89 with Barry Norman.
