- A long time ago (1980, actually), in a BBC Television studio far far away...
R2-D2 ran over Goldie the Blue Peter dog, Darth Vader, Chewbacca and C-3PO were sized up by Simon Groom and Christopher Wenner, Sarah Green chatted to Carrie Fisher as she played with a tortoise, Mark Hamill cuddled a cat, and everybody ate lashings of Star Wars stew - courtesy of a recipe by 8-year-old Elspeth Bruford.
All in the name of promoting The Empire Strikes Back.

I got the Star Wars annual for Christmas, and took it with me when we went out in the car, staring at the picture of Princess Leia / Carrie. Really sad she died at only 60. Hope she's at peace now, as she had some difficult times.

I loved how they just laid it all out there. Revenge of the Jedi, 3 prequels and a young obi wan. Not too far off.

@@lg5819 It was called Revenge of the Jedi right up until its release to stop counterfitters from cashing in - there was even some official merchandise released with Revenge of the Jedi on.

@@pferreira1983 They were both very polite - it only cracked when the whole scene went into an awkward, "Plummy Brit Haw-Haw", overdrive as one particularly shrill toff showed up to promote a damned Little Book of Stews...
They looked like they wanted to just leave and get on a plane when a different toff actually wheeled in, "piping hot", bowls of the trash, apparently ladled out of a chintzy tureen.... Carrie was so Hollywood Royal that of course she politely munched a big spoon of it - but, after pushing it around, Mark didn't hesitate to swiftly fed his to the dog - _on screen...._
She was probably stoned at the time lol

I met Sarah about 18 years and Tina Heath I still see these days. Both beautiful ladies.

Peter Cushing referred to her as "Dear little Carrie". They git along so well that Carrie found it difficult being nasty to him. There's a lovely outtake on RUclips where PC fluffs his line and they break down laughing.

Yeah that cat felt really comfortable in the lap of an unknown human. Must have had a radiance the cat knew it could trust.
The odd thing is I recognise Sarah Greene's voice very well, but she looks totally different to the way I remember her looking in the late 80s/early 90s.

2:15 Ofc it's Blue Peter (a children's show) but I LOVE how calm and homely the vibe is. Everyone is soft-spoken & at ease. Maybe all interviews need petting a cat and a turtle!
Remember being dizzy with excitement watching this, leading up to the UK release of Empire.
Happy memories. Oh to be a ten year old again.

Mad how people used to watch tv and look forward to it. I haven’t sat down and watched a television show since I was a child. Most people my age don’t have the attention span to watch tv lol
@@tdoran616 Different times. Only three channels to watch. No choice, no internet, no second chances.
Everything was 'event' TV, if you didn't watch when it was broadcast, then that was it.
Perhaps today we have too much choice and not enough quality.

Sooooo many mistakes made. Number one was that no one thought it would be a good idea to write an outline for the whole trilogy instead of just letting each writer/director do whatever the hell they wanted? I was okay with _The Force Awakens_ even though it was indeed similar to _A New Hope_ but it just didn't seem to know where it wanted to go after that.

The good old days. When stars from the biggest film at the cinema, made guest appearances on a kids TV programme!
That's because back they knew engaging with the presenters and audience was the best kind of promotion, rather than scripted Q&A's in press junkets. Could you picture modern stars wearing a jumper and petting a very contented cat while being so open and humble?
This is before Hollywood people became weird and unrelatable 😭 lol
Marvel actors (who are the best equivalent to Star Wars actors), do children’s tv and visit hospitals. All this reminiscing about the ‘good old days’ is because we were children back then, that’s why it seemed better. Look how thin Carrie is in this recording, she was addicted to a class A white powder at the time (based on her autobiography and stand up where she was very open about her issues)
Bare in mind the Star Wars films were shot at Elstree Studios. They were probably living close by BBC Television Center at the time.

George the Tortoise had a good day here I see. Empire Strikes Back was the first film I saw in the cinema, I was 8. Fascinating to hear Mark talk about the Prequel series - it only took 19 years to get off the ground.

My goodness, I don’t remember this. Imagine Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill playing with Blue Peter pets. Also an appearance by the late Christopher Wenner latterly a war reporter of great renown. And most surreal being served Star Wars stew!
My young experience, I thought fans would love this,
In the early 80s there was a kids Christmas Party at Elstree Studio’s in Borehamwood where I use to live, well, as young kids a few of us were naughty, we left the party for a brief time, we got up to no good running around various rooms and corridors, then a deep voice shouted, hey kids, no running around here, we all stopped and turned around to see a tall man in cheque shirt and jeans holding a book of papers, he spoke different, this man was confirmed to be Harrison Ford😮
Still today it still plays back in my mind what us kids saw,
George Lucas should never of sold his ideas to someone else,

Wonderful to see this. Shame Carrie was on cannabis at the age of 13 and had an addiction and took it while filming The empire strikes back. Life must have been so stressful and hard for her. R.I.P Carrie
I love how mark and carrie are playing the parts. talking about how she doesnt get fed in space, still living up the role, mark talks about only having yodas stew. what delightful interviews and such fun humanity to role play like that as their movie selves on a talk show!

R2's head is completely backwards throughout segment and 3P0'S entrance is a wild waddle, chewie is missing his bandolier, Vaders helmet is crooked.

Thanks for the time travel, were we all so young..............I pulled my sons out of school for the day ESB opened in Toronto Canada, we stood in line with a few hundred students and got to enjoy the film. Sons were sent into school the next day with " remember you went to the dentist", alas number two son regaled the class with a full telleing of the new story. Dad busted at the next parent teacher interview. Happy days!

Sarah greene recieved a few tributes when I was growing up.
A month later, both Tina Heath and Christopher Wenner left the show. Christopher went on to be an internationally-acclaimed war correspondent. He died last October.
I remember Tina Heath as a girl, appearing as Lizzie Dripping a few years before she presented Blue Peter.
Takes away some of the mystique of Star Wars, even through my then 9 year old eyes ! Great upload. I’m guessing Sarah Green was quite new to the show as she seems unusually nervous?

I remember this. May 1980. I think this was the day of the London première of _The Empire Strikes Back._ Hard to believe it was 42 years ago this month.
Back in the good old days when Mark Hamill at least pretended to be pleasant for the sake of children watching and Carrie Fisher was on her best behaviour as it's a children's show.
RIP Carrie Fisher.

What a find! Amazing to see these screen icons on little old BP. It’s not as though Star Wars was a small deal, even back then. Guessing this was right at the beginning of Sarah Greene’s tenure on BP.
Chris Ellis had to do a Noakes style drop from the studio roof and said he caught a Grange Hill episode filming session with Tucker Jenkins actor Todd Carty. Great times.

I'm guessing kids TV wasn't something that Harrison had any time for and got out of doing the vast majority of promotional work. At least Mark appeared to enjoy it and Carrie a little.
As the most successful Star Wars actor at that time, Harrison was probably working on Raiders of the Lost Ark by then, so may not have had the time.

I remember watching these two in interviews and waiting in eager anticipation for the prequals to come out and 20 years seemed like 100 years🤣.

Saw ESB twice in one week at cinema back then. Happy exciting times, I was 13 years old.

Technically not even that. She died in December of 2016, so she didn’t even make it to the 36 mark. A tragedy for sure
@@wepbots1084 wasn’t this Blue Peter episode 1980? I don’t know for sure which month in 1980, I assume around summer time to promote The Empire Strikes back. I was 16 then, still seems like yesterday, and yes a tragedy for sure, even more so when her mother Debbie Reynolds passed away a day later, no doubt the shock was too much.

That's interesting, Mark said they might do the prequel to New Hope, which sort of confirms that George Lucas did intend and probably write the prequal back in 1983 but was never done, because special effects though awesome could not be done for EP I,II and III. remember this episode.
I remember it always going to be a 9 part story, documenting the Skywalker family. I read it(i think it was in Lookin), must've been around 1983-84.
@@scottw.3258 I read it in Look-In, but I believe it was earlier than '83; I'm pretty sure the article stated that Vader was intended to be in the final three films as well. I'm probably wrong, but wow, that was a long time ago. 😁
@@FerDeLance06 You're probably right, that it was earlier than '83. Thinking about it, it was probably between 'Empire', and 'Jedi'. It rings a bell that Vader, or Anakin, was meant to appear in the final three films.

Fascinating that "prequel" was a term used that far back; I thought it was coined to described the Prequel Trilogy when it eventually arrived.
No, I remember Zulu Dawn being described as a 'prequel' to Zulu when it came out.
