    TW: Weight
    A few things to mention:
As I stated, if you personally have struggled vocally from either weight gain or loss I'm not discounting that! The claim I addressed in the video was specifically the idea that heavier people have a "heavier" sound or that a singer's voice/tone will fundamentally change from losing some weight under most circumstances- I don't believe any of this is relevant to a degree that warrants significant public criticism or speculation. It would be far more appropriate for news anchors to speculate about which vocal coach what celebrity is seeing and why! That would actually be interesting!
Weight changes may very well influence things like breath support and maybe even vocal health at the extremes. But as far as we know doesn't make your vocal tone fundamentally different- that's what technique does! If two people (or the same person) can make a "heavy" tone regardless of size then clearly it is not the size creating the tone!
Some more evidence-based factors that can influence vocal tone that weren't mentioned in the video are things like smoking, pregnancy, age, menopause, testosterone replacement therapy, etc. These types of voice changes are well documented.
Hope that clears things up for some people! These are just my opinions- feel free to form your own but try to base them in research especially if you are speculating about other people!

@@TheDivayenta There are two forms of diet. Most people use the word diet only for losing weight. The correct or better use of the word "diet" is everything a person takes in on a regular basis. What ever that person consumes IS his/her "diet". Going on a diet to lose weight is the wrong way. There is an assumption that there is a "black voice" or that black people sing with "soul." It's another topic where if you look at the science the genetic variation between races in terms of vocal tract shape/size and vocal fold length/thickness - it's fairly uniform. So the entire idea is just based on ignorance and stereotypes.

Sincerely, from a girl who had anorexia for years and used to consume content that overly focused on body image to scare me away from eating. Ie. body shaming content/supersize vs super skinny etc. It’s a touchy subject if eating is centred around a trauma that happened. Lot of cases involve needing control after having difficulty coping or adapting to sudden changes from it. And that’s a struggle experienced by both over eaters and restrictive eaters. I think it's not her voice that's changed. Her voice is still great. A brighter sound is not produced just from the Larynx but mixed voice supported by the diaphragm through the chest, Larynx, back of the neck, skull, anchord on the uvula, soft palette and hard palette, then heavier on the mask more forward with a wider projection. What changed is her dynamics, because I think, she is already over with her ex lover. She is so hot now. She probably changed her mood. She is happier now or perhaps in love with another. So naturally her mood changed. I can sense it in her tone of voice. It's not as sad as before. It's a happyer tune now. So nice to see Adele singing again. She is so beautiful and talented. She deserves to be on the center stage.

I still had access to my university’s catalogue of publications- so virtually all studies - but not these.

What's the difference between vocal cords, vocal chords, vocal folds and voice reeds then? I'm curious since i thought the general term was vocal cords? Serious question, not trying to be disrespectful.

    • @emilyzahora3330
      @emilyzahora3330 3 года назад +5

@@adrianlimon7974 You’re not being disrespectful at all. I’ve honestly never heard them called vocal reeds before, but all these are basically synonyms for the same part of your vocal apparatus. Vocal folds is the correct terminology (to make it even more confusing, there are true and false folds). They used to be called vocal cords, but the name was changed since vocal folds don’t really look, move, or produce sound like cords. Vocal cords is used a lot more frequently though, even in other medical fields and in music and such, but it’s highly frowned upon in Speech Pathology.
If you google vocal folds you’ll see that they look more like flaps or folds. Just as a warning, they can resemble a very different part of female anatomy at times or you might come across images of people with vocal trauma/pathology which can be fairly graphic. I’m not an expert in vocal anatomy by any means, but I hope this helps.

It's not uncommon for mature contraltos have deep or dark voices when they speak.

I am a huge Adele fan and an avid watcher of his live recordings. As such, I feel like her vocal technique has changed with each album: with 19 she used to belt with her head voice (she had these "wide" beltings, very powerful), then with 21 she had this raspier voice (in some performances of someone like you you can appreciate how she does a bit of vocal fry before approaching some notes) and with 25 she opted for a more classic, standard belting with her chest voice. Anyway, I'd love to hear you guys' opinion because I don't really have that much knowledge of vocal technique

I studied voice in college over 10 years ago, in my third year I had to leave without finishing my degree because of personal reasons, but looking back I just hadn’t reached my full maturity in my voice yet. I was very breathy, and had a very difficult time with grounding. My tone is entirely different now (yes, I do still practice, and study what I can on my own). People’s voices mature over time, and they change, I can remember my teacher mentioning how many Mens voices take years to reach their peek, and the lower the voice, the longer it takes. For women, she said it takes less time, but also, their peek is shorter in duration. I’m not trying to suggest Adele is past her peek, only that maturing of the voice changes it. She still sounds absolutely amazing, and I really like the smokiness in her town now.

I would add, along with possible hormone flux, some people have increased reflux with higher weight. I have been the same size for many, MANY years. and have been singing for many more, but when I was pregnant with my youngest daughter I developed terrible reflux that has not gone away. Terrible to the point that it actually had impacted my respiratory tract and has changed my voice due to vocal cord inflammation. It took almost 2 years of specialists and testing to figure it out, but now I can tell when it's getting bad before I feel any heartburn because I can hear myself breathe and the quality of my voice takes a hike.

I never thought weight gain/loss affected someone's singing voice dramatically, but because of the perpetuated myth being pushed as almost common knowledge fact, I assumed it has something to do with space/pressure surrounding the diaphragm! Since "big singing" is associated with belting and that whole 'ReSoNANcE' thing lol But anyone with the aligning technique and practice can get to that tone no matter their shape or size! In my experience the part that weight plays in my singing is: when I'm worried about being thin, I hold my stomach in more. When I do that, I have nowhere near the BREATH flow and support that I would if I relax my belly fully. Grounding into the belly helps so much. I feel like when I'm heavy set and just allowing my belly to relax, I'm not worried about how my belly looks and I sing with full breath and confidence. Perhaps some heavy set singers do the same: they aren't worrying about how their belly looks and therefore are totally relaxing it.

Hormones do change voice. Giving birth, or menopause does effect the voice! My voice has changed over the years due to child birth and menopause, it's much higher now than before.

My favorite is Freddie Mercury didn't want to take out his mesiodens ( he had 4 extra setvif teeth in his upper jaw) because he feared he would not be able to sing like he does

I'm no expert in voice or anything, far from it in fact, but why anyone has made a connection with weight and vocals is strange to me.

It does sounds strange, my theory is it has something to do with the “fat opera singer” stereotype 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to put this together, seriously (not to mention you putting a hundred bucks up for us!!!). ☺ You explain things so well, and what's more, you never make your audience feel dumb while you're doing it. You really do come across as very down-to-earth and easy-going, easy to talk to, etc, which is truly so essential for good teachers (how can you allow yourself to be vulnerable, and really experiment to find your voice, if you don't feel comfortable in the space?) Like it's lovely that you made the effort to handle this particular subject sensitively, from the weight loss talk, the compassion/nonjudgmentalness you show towards people who've suffered potential vocal damage, to warning about the somewhat graphic images, just in case. You clearly put a lot of thought into this - frankly, stellar - free resource, I can only imagine how committed you are with your actual students! They're a lucky bunch. Thanks again, you've won yourself a new subscriber. ☺
