- HI SISTERS! In today's video, I decided to open up about a topic you know I love, but have never really discussed before... my singing voice. After a few covers and thousands of hate comments, I feel like it's finally time to be honest about my past as a singer growing up, and my videos now. I invited Vocal Coach Tristan Paredes over for a lesson and asked him to tell me the brutal truth about my voice. Enjoy.

as someone who's been trained, it's really refreshing to see someone open to criticism so quickly. it's so important to love who's coaching you and trust them without any doubt whatsoever, because they make the harshest constructive criticisms. good work, sister james! keep at it.

Not really. He had lessons with Cheryl Porter who was saying the same. But in his Driver's License video he still does the things Tristan tells him not to.

If you entered an actual beatboxing community, you would be hated on for being so arrogant and obnoxious even though you don’t have the skill to back it up. No ones gonna like you. I love Tristan’s style of teaching. He’s not intimidating at all and gives great feedback and actual constructive criticism. I’ve seen a lot of people using the guisé of constructive criticism when they’re deliberately trying to tear down someone else. I WAS ABSOLUTELY SISTER SHOOK TO THE CORE!!!!!! When he showed the video of you doing the Chandelier cover, then in person, and after the advise you could hear a ENORMOUS difference. My jaw was on the floor. It was sooooo good. I’m so proud of you. It’s so difficult admitting you need improvement especially with the pressure of 8 million subscribers and because you are so passionate. Please don’t give up don’t be discouraged you are amazing!!!
Tristan's advice made a huge difference! He clearly sounded great by the end.
And that advice might not have been followed or practiced enough.

I’m so happy that James had the maturity to work towards improving himself and to accept the constructive criticism he’s receiving. The improvements were so noticeable and it made me emotional to see him work so hard at something. So proud of him!!

I have watched Triston's videos for a while and I think he is very fair. He never just tears people down. He tries to be constructive. And I think that you sounded really good. And I am happy that you are being very open and vulnerable.

Tristan is a really good vocal coach. There was a prominent difference in the before and afters and you sound a lot better! I hope you’ll take some more lessons from him because I really want to see you get better. You’ve got something, but you need someone to bring it out.

It’s SO cool how he took hate and turned it into constructive criticism. He recognized areas he could improve on and he’s working to better himself. Most people would give up and just accept and focus on the the negative aspects of what people say. So seeing someone do quite the opposite and make the bad into something good is such an important thing for not only yourself but others. Way to go James I’m SO excited to see what the future has in store. Love you sister!

I actually used to not like James, but I have a new respect for him. Nice job, sis!
As a violinist I appreciated the realness and the honesty when it came to working on his technique because this is what a real private lesson is like. Every time I go to a lesson or do a competition I have to listen to the criticism and it is hard, but it makes me better because it isn't meant to be harmful, it's to make me better. I'm glad that there are more people like James who are able to better themselves by finding wonderful teachers that can uplift them by giving them advice on what they can improve because it's what makes us better people. Please, if you can take anything away from this video, it's that hateful comments and constructive comments aren't the same, and we should always aim to be the best versions of ourselves.

It makes me sad when he says “I know I suck” because in all honesty, he doesn’t. Just from some practice today, you could hear the difference and he sounded so good. Imagine how good he’s going to sound in a couple months and/or even years. He’ll be amazing.

I teared up actually hearing you sing at the end. The notes hit me, the tone was really strong. I love these kinds of videos. Videos where you're humbled are where we see you at your most genuine.

As a singer who is sooo critical on myself, I appreciate your honesty and your willingness to grow and improve in front of millions of viewers. There aren’t a whole lot of Whitney’s or Celine’s in the world and the reality is most of the powerhouse vocalists that you see have had LOTS of training and work CONTINUOUSLY to perfect their craft. Most people that leave those nasty comments are just jealous and obviously see SOMETHING in u that intimidated or threatens them, but knowing that doesn’t make it hurt any less. Keep doing what your doing! You are on the right path and your determination will take you very far. Your transformation from the beginning of this video to the end- in and of itself was amazing! I can’t wait to see future projects u work on. Oh and by the way- I would LOVE to sing a duet with u! Check out Love Me Love me Not (duet version with Natalie Weiss and Joey Contreras)
I've watched Tristen's videos before, and got the impression that he was really knowledgeable, but there's something about seeing him in action here that's even more impressive. Especially when he would stop you, and tell you to do something that I can tell you thought was silly or weird, but then you did it and I'm like, "Holy shit, it worked!". If you're thinking of continuing to sing and improve, *hire that man* !

What I love about this is not only Tristan working his magic (and being is adorable self while doing it) but when James first tried the cover again for the first time you can see on his face that this is really something he loves and takes seriously and he is so open to working hard on it.

Legit vocal coach. Sometimes people get so caught up into making sure they hit the right notes, they forget how important pronunciation is. I love how he doesn’t hold back he says exactly what he feels whereas a friend is not going to tell you these things because they don’t want to hurt your feelings
