I knew Rory quite well and saw him about 38 times in concert. He was a shy, quiet, kind and immaculately polite person, who always gave his bands full credit.
His hands were like malt shovels: but he was also highly accomplished on mandolin, alto sax, slide guitar, harmonica and songwriting.
His acoustic sets were a delight and he always played them from 1968 onwards.
I miss him every day. Thank you for putting him on your show. 🎸🎸😁😁

This great Irish Rocker/ Blues man was barely known outside of The UK. While the average Joe Rock fan had never heard of him, you can take this to the Bank, Rory Gallagher, was not only known, but hugely admired by some of the greatest artists ever. Jimi Hendrix met him while he was in London in 1967 with his new Band "The Jimi Hendrix Experience." Jimi said of Rory, "Rory is the greatest guitarist that almost no one has heard of outside of Ireland and England. He's an unbelievable talent." Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin said, "If Rory was in it for the money, like most of us are, he'd be as well-known known as anyone in the music business, but he isn't about the money, he plays for the fan, in a small intimate venue, so he can interact with his audience." The list of superstar rockers that admire Rory, is amazing. He is easily in the top 3 Rock /Blues guitarists of all time. He is right there with Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, and a couple of others. Do yourself a favor and check out some more of Rory Gallagher.

The album and movie "Irish Tour '74" is especially good. If I were only allowed one Rory Gallagher album that would be my choice. The albums he recorded with Taste are worth a listen. Finally, back in the 70s and 80s the BBC broadcast a show called "Rock Goes to College". Rory Gallagher's concert is very good.

This is one of the earliest takes on this piece-as he continued to play this , his soloing really took off and was simply amazing. There's several live versions of this from the 80's and 90's that are amazing. Thanks for taking another look at Rory! There is a live acoustic version of "Walking Blues" from 1994 with Bela Fleck that is super. And the fully acoustic performance he did for Me And My Music RTE Studios in 1977-outstanding! Rory could play electric, acoustic, banjo, mandolin, sitar, harmonica and sax.

Nice reaction! The original artist was Leadbelly. I would recommend watching Rory's 1976 Rockpalast performance - he plays solo acoustic for the first half of the concert, and the second half with the band, covering a range of styles. Smallish, polite/quiet German TV studio audience - watch him work to get them to loosen up and join in!!
As a child, Rory taught himself to play covering songs by Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, etc, then moved on to electric guitar, electric blues and Rock & Roll, but he never lost his love of the older acoustic blues.

Rory grew up in the north of Eire, within range of the radio station broadcasting from the nearby USAF base and that was his introduction to the blues. In the 70s (I never saw him live in the 80s) he always included a solo acoustic number or two in the middle of the set.

30 million album's sold. I'm from Florida everyone I new in the 70s was well aware of Rory. I use to listen to him in the early hours going first light surfing. Everyone knew him in the surf community I grew up around. He is unbelievable guitar player. He got lost when MTV started ruining the music industry. I'm glad he stayed the small venue genius, he was. So few people have an ear for greatness. That is why all the crap came out. Disco, glam, hair, all of it sucks. MTV is to blame and an uneducated musically tone deaf populous. And Rory wasn't the only artist who never got his due.

It’s not really outside of Rory’s ‘lane’. It’s in DADGAD which he was well versed in, by the great blues man, Leadbelly. Rory was a really great acoustic player as well as a truly great electric player - as the likes of friends like Martin Carty and Juan Martin would no doubt testify.

It’s a ledbelly song... while I saw Rory Gallagher live several times (Gall - a - her) pronounced- it was epic live- but I always preferred his studio albums (originals more then remastered generally) there is two acoustic songs in particular I like from the albums. On the excellent Defender album ‘Seven Days’ and on the also excellent Fresh Evidence album ‘Empire State Express’ which was recorded in one take live in the studio.

There's an apocryphal take that some reporter once asked Jimi Hendrix what it felt like to be the best living guitarist in the world. Hendrix was supposed to have responded: "You better ask Rory Gallacher". If there is any truth to the story it tells us two things: What a modest self-deprecating individual Jimi was, and what esteem Rory was held in by his peers.
