I think what's most haunting about this whole scene is that it feels so final. Especially with the section in rubicon where you go through all the places you've already seen before in younger versions of the world and as other slugcats. It feels like a love letter to those who made it this far, it feels like the end to this tired world.
And then you find out that there is no end. It's just another cycle, and the world will never rest. It's so perfect.
couldn't have conveyed that feeling better any other way....
There is no death. Just an endless cycle of transcendance.
so true churchill toad
You're going to make me cry...
The fact that this song is literally one of the first songs you'll ever hear, Pictures of the Past, but reversed, really sells the 'cycle' idea.
Pictures of the past;
Memories from the future.
Sight from the future
The fact that this is the opening song for Survivors campaign but in reverse shows the entire cycle system restarting..

All of the Void worms, The Void sea, The Cycle, The Mortal Coil itself and Ascension: _you weren't supposed to do that._

Why did they always search for an escape, as if we were imprisoned? What offering from the void could usurp the gift of life already given? This moment, right here! It is where we are meant to be.
reading that echo for the first time made me cry. in a world once full of these cynical, misanthropic beings that abandoned the world, hearing one of them admit the beauty and special experience that is being alive. in a world where everyone lives forever, why chose to leave? no matter what, there will always be something new to experience, new places to go, new friends to make. to be nothingness, to cease existing, to become one with the void, is an unfathomable horror i wouldnt wish upon anyone.
That was the last echo I found 😭

hey it’s that guy I know
the cycle never ends, like sleep, like death, you'll wake right back up again.

This song manages to have an even stronger impact than Random Gods, despite it being used in the same context. Saint's campaign is frankly the greatest of them all and I'm very glad they saved the best for last. The climax of that whole thing is simply incredible. And even the fact it's reversed makes complete sense in the area it plays.
And the fact that this track is one of the very first, and one of the very last you hear in the game. It all comes full loop. A Cycle.
This whole campaign was such an emotional roller coaster, it started with curiosity, frustration from the snow and sadness when I saw Pebbles. Then I ascended Moon, wondering what would happen to her, not expecting her to straight up die. I felt like I had actually killed my best friend or something. I figured I'd do the same to Pebbles since I felt bad for the fella, didn't feel great either. So fast forward to when I was in Rubicon, I was still carrying the guilt of killing those two and thought I was in Hell or something. I felt like I deserved to be down there with all those ravenous creatures. And then there's this song. This song made me feel worse about what I had done to Moon and Pebbles. When I saw them both in Rubicon, I nervously smiled as they talked about that existential stuff, and then the smile faded when they vanished, leaving me with so much despair. Damn, this game is good.
One must imagine Saint happy
Boulder up hill time
Saint has the solution, He will save everyone.
*...But who will save him?*
exactly what i got, that is the job of a 'saint', to try their best to help everyone except themselves
:( poor sainty
I believe, if it is a cycle, it is possible to do it again. I like to think that Saint, willingly, chose to return, to reject ascension, to go back and help the others who cannot achieve it themselves. Something, something, bodhisattva
Finishing saint's campaign at late night is the best feeling ever
Back where it started, an endless cycle, a timeless drip drip dip.
That will never stop
@@mythical_coffeenever, ever
Saint's ending made me fully understand the cycle as a whole (obvious spoilers incoming)
The Cycle is something far greater than we imagined, really. There are multiple cycles- but the cycle that we as a slugcat and them as the ancients understood was not the True Cycle. There's the rain cycle, the day/night cycle, and the death cycle. As Moon said, like sleep like death. The Ancients considered the death cycle as The Great Cycle, thinking that was the true trap, and that ascension was an escape. But I don't believe it is, judging from Saint's ending. But ascension isn't an escape. It's merely the end and beginning of everyone's own cycle. Like sleep like death, like death like ascension. You will wake up again, no matter what you do. Everyone experiences their own special cycle, a circle that loops infinitely containing even more looping circles- you die and you wake up you ascend and you wake up and you die and you wake up and you ascend and it will keep looping forever. The Cycle is invulnerable, it's inevitable, nothing can break it or escape it no matter how hard they try. The Cycle exists beyond comprehension, something so far away and so unreachable that the only way to understand even a fraction of what it means is to be an echo, in some way shape or form. To ascend and wake up but not all of you left, and that part that's gone holds that understanding and gifts it to everything you have. A knowledge that the only way to truly know is to experience, and come out of it someone changed.
This probably made 0 sense so have my thoughts anyway
I do actually like this interpretation, but a few things:
As for the "rain cycle", the rain is not a natural thing in the same way the cycle is, but rather caused by the "exhalation" of water from the iterators. See: Aquamarine pearl, lime pearl brought to LTTM, or Purple pearl brought to FP as artificer.
As for ascension not being the end... as much as this is an interesting take on it, I have reasons to the contrary.
For one, beating the game as saint changes his game selection icon, as with all the other slugcats. In saint's case however, it's an *echo.*, which we know in game to be those who, due to a karmic vice, or some other reason, were unable to escape the cycle. (See: Four Needles under Plentiful Leaves, Shaded Citadel Echo, Rhinestones beneath Shattered Glass, Undergrowth Echo, Atop the Tallest Tower/Twelve Beads among Burning Skies, Metropolis Echo: Non artificer), which implies saint failed to escape the cycle for some reason, which is why it wakes up again, ascension like merely another death.
Not rain cycle,but WATER cycle.
If the cyclic universe theory is correct, and every universe ends in the same position it began in, recurring over and over... it is inevitable that each and every one of us will be reincarnated at some point, perhaps we have lived millions of lives in the past. Thats sort of something that happens whenever "infinite" goes from a theoretical number to an actually observable one, yet we know that infinite in itself is impossible. Its somewhat disturbing to think about, and I think its evidence that we ourselves cannot fully comprehend the universe we live in, not because we lack all of the details but because its physically outside of what we are capable of thinking about.
The funny thing is for something to be 'infinite' is only currently impossible based on our present understanding of the universe. We still find things constantly that our current understanding of things can't explain, so while presently far-fetched, I imagine it's entirely possible advancements in our technology and scientific breakthroughs could reveal facets of reality that make things such as Infinity possible- albeit still not tangibly reproducible by us.
@@kiro1469 maybe saint was unable to leave something from this world and it was sticking him to the world
maybe he HIMSELF didn't wanted to ascend because he really valued life?
Or maybe he sacrificed himself to ascend others?
This song stabs me in the heart every time I hear it. It's so emotionally powerful and perfect for the end of the game. Absolutely incredible. I love rain world so much 😭😭
The best part about this song being at the end is the fact that it's a reversed version of pictures of the past which is the first song you hear when you start a new game so it's even more fitting as one of the ending themes

that feeling, when this little fluffy bastard is actually four dimensional eldritch god
Five not four

It's actually pretty fitting, I think, that if Rain World represents Theravada Buddhism (that is, individual salvation through following the path) then the expansion Downpour represents Mahayana (with the concept of Bodhisattva, in this case the Saint, as a force for salvation that delayed their own ascension). Just as the historical evolution of Buddhism did
Everything comes full circle, for eternity is unchanging. Legit best song we could have gotten for the end of the game.
“Perhaps this is the end,
Or mabye a new beginning,

Hearing this fade in for the first time, reaching what I assumed would be ascension, the realisation dawning that the Saint had given everything... This game has made me feel some profound things, and made reflect on myself in ways I can't put into words. I wish I could experience it all for the first time again. It may 'just be a game', but it is one that I will likely hold dear for a very long time.
Why is this not on spotify aaaaa
The only way the break the cycle is through constant, unending sacrifice. However, to lead another to apotheosis is to damn oneself to the cycle.
this music is on par to the emotions felt in the general systems bus. the arps and synths felt in the song makes the whole journey worth imo
it's pictures of the past reversed and slowed
Imagine that a song can have such an impact for just being reversed
My favorite part of the saint campaign is the name. The monk, the survivor, and the hunter are all named after passages you can unlock, and none of the downpour campaigns are, except for the last and final journey, the saint.
My interpretation of the Saint's story (spoilers below of course)
.
.
.
.
is that at first they sought Enlightenment so they underwent the "pilgrimage" through the freezing world and endured starvation in accordance to the tradition of the Ancients. But the more they listened to the echoes and saw the world around them, they learned that Life will thrive even at the threat of Destruction. That Life is gift. Why should it be treated like a curse or shackle?
"All must serve the Void" is a message an echo delivers. "Swim with the tide or against it" is the message of the last echo before Saint gains their Ascension.
When the Saint journeys the world overtaken by the Void, the revelation is clear that it's a world without any Life. For the first time, the Saint breaks their own law and starts harming and targeting Guardians and every being standing their way to journey up to the higher beings for more answers.
When you talk to Moon and Pebbles for one last time they say "I could see the beginnings and ends of all living things. But yours is a spiral with no ending. Wake up before it's too late."
When the Saint finally reaches up to the Void Worm's judgement, their response is to violently reject the Void because they've seen everything there is to see in the world overtaken by Void-- just a wasteland of destruction and nothingness. And the Saint doesn't want that for the world.
Be it from their enormous ego for trying to decide the fate of the world or they've decided to undertake a neverending pilgrimage of rebelling against the Void-- they will do it because they choose Life over the Void. That's why the Saint becomes an Echo.
Like all the Echoes before them.
Tbh it's more likely to me that they're the triple affirmative, and have been made so that they cannot ascend while ascending everything else besides them.
I mean, that certainly goes more along with the idea that the saint's cycle is an eternal loop, rather than just unending like the echoes, though he definitely is one in some way.
@@catsukisubaru3715 i personnaly think he just gave up ascencion to help ascend everyone else, and by the looks of it he has been busy long before the game starts since we can see a lot of destroyed iterator cans, and unless moon just got lucky enough to not die like everyone else the saint ascended them
That is actually such a good interpretation wtf
@@catsukisubaru3715 i still think both of these interpretations could coexist with each other
Sounds quite logical. This suddenly turns the original lore upside down (just like Rubicon), making Ascension and Void Sea not a salvation, but only a trap. It's not like I did believe in ascension - just a mere illusion of happiness and bliss before you vanish at the end of your cycle. Then you wake up. Again.
Life is a gift, and Ancients were misguided by their idea. All that they did is only to erase themselves from time we pass after them. Or maybe they didn't - who knows? Maybe in another cycle, they were different in approach...
But at the same time, Saint is a Bodhisattva by Buddhist standards. This still keeps story tragic as he tries to ascend everyone on his path, believing in better afterlife, but in the end all he does is only sends others into desolate void he fights in the end.
That ending was pretty damn dope seeing at the end, but ngl it makes me feel even more on my theory that saint deepthroated a grapple worm, especially with the karma level you start at.
they. they what.
I will now have this in the back of my head first like a month, thanks man
what the fuck are you even saying

I want to sincerely thank Videocult and its team for creating Rain World, this masterpiece has a special place in my heart. Playing as a little beast, you and it lost in a new world that's slowly decaying. How much cycles Five Pebbles, Looks To The Moon, Seven Red Suns, No Significant Harassment, Chasing Wind, and Unparalleled Innocence endured, as they've probably just seen how this world abundant of rain enters an ice age, and then a new world, which i remember is being crafted by echoes and Saint themselves.
The soundtrack, the ecosystem, the rooms! Seeing the regions change over time. Five Pebble's unfortunate collapse, the rot, which was once thriving, has extinct because of the harsh, new world. It's so great how much detail of the passage of time Rain World has, one thing that has surprised me is seeing the Metropolis gate just, gone. The drainage system, which was just pipes of water, has now become a fully fledged ecosystem, like a jungle, meeting Moon at her earliest state in Spearmastes's campaign, there is so much to talk about Rain World's extreme detail of the unmovable force that's time.
Even the campaigns were fun too: attempting to crush an enemy in Gourmand's campaign, battling out with scavengers in Artificer's campaign, going to many regions in attempt to reach Moon in Spearmaster's campaign, entering Five Pebble's superstructure and literally grabbing his heart, as his superstructure is in a state of decay by the Rot in Rivulet's campaign, finding all the echoes and going crazy with the power of ascension, letting out Pebbles and Moon from their cycles, then returning back to Sky Islands after escaping the void sea, so Saint can create a new world and ascend every living creature in Saint's campaign,
I was having a lot of fun playing as a white jellybean, a banana, a turbocancerous animal, Nightcat?, a morbidly obese slug, an organic bomb, a walking 3D printer, a hyperactive axolotl and a scug with the powers of God himself. This project was one of the finest pieces of art.
There will never, ever be a game like Rain World.
the only one who can cross the Rubicon and come back.
Every single time I listen to it, I get a huge feeling of nostalgia. Or maybe it's melancholy? I don't know. Like a 'You'll be gone eventually, but you will also be reborn.' kinda way? I'm not exactly sure how to explain it.
Like, the end of something. But it's not actually the end. It perfectly encapsulates whatever vibes they were trying to achieve I think.

That's because it's the intro theme... In reverse!

They really didn't need to go all-out on Saint's campaign but they did and man did it pay off
Its such a wonderfully confusing way to conclude Saint, and the downpour timeline.
I hope we’re able to get some answers about Saint because everything about their ending is a mystery
Just as i thought there would be any more tricks up this campaign's sleeves, I get the same primordial terror and confusion that the end of the survivor's campaign.
This game is art.
this song gives me the thought of someone just accepting their death, their ending and embracing it. this song really took me for a long trip, and i could say so much about this song, and how great rain world is, but i'll just leave it at that for now.

Now get ready for RAIN WORLD
UPSUCK
I reversed this song because I was curious there's something hiding there, I was in shock
As you swim through the nothingness aimlessly, you begin to feel yourself dissipate. You have ended everything, and now the nothing left behind will end you.
You wake up, cold, hungry, alone. Was it all a dream? The world around you seems familiarly desolate, the vast snowscape of the remnants of the old world only being broken by the dull gray of old ancient architecture from eons prior. The world is how you left it, like your endless efforts to end the cycle have been completely erased. The world ended, yet it begins again.
The ending to Rain World is something I'm still struggling to comprehend. All I can say for certain is that it's an experience I will never forget.
"This moment, right here! It is where we are meant to be."

Im pretty mad this isn't on the OST. I don't know how they could have made that kind of oversight
because this is the end of... you know... so it's spoilers I guess
@@alejotassile6441 yeah but that's like not releasing the climactic moment of a movie OST on the soundtrack, or not releasing final boss music. People know to expect spoilers on a soundtrack, and if devs want a spoiler free period then the OST should be released at a delay.
Hell, sometimes even track titles on OSTs are spoilers, which I disagree with the practice of and don't think even applies in this case.
I think it’s because it’s a different song reversed, so it’s not a new composition.
@@perplexedon9834 Well tbf, after a little while, you start to just be able to tell at what point certain songs will play because their title. Like obviously if you're a new player this wouldn't matter, so this is slightly irrelevant what I'm typing, but simply based on the structure of Rain World's game systems, I'd assume that the moment a player realizes that there's a song called "The Cycle" and the cycle itself is a massive plot point, they could probably assume it occurs somewhere at the end of the game.
Though of course, why would anyone look up spoilers before even finishing the game, those lugs honestly.
i got the OST just for tis song and then relised its not on it. im so sad :C
its just pictures of the past reversed, but is still considered a different song. beautiful
Pictures of the future
i love the symbolism of this:
its the reverse of pictures of the past the very first thing you hear when actually playing this game, it is truly the end everything around you has become so warped its unrecognizable and yet familiar this world you have come to love the world you've played through time on time again is here at its very end and this, the reverse of pictures of the past, is what you hear. it is perfect music design both communicating to you the player of this worlds inevitable end and also that it is truly a new beginning for a new world.
i think it would be really cool to have like a rain world 2 where we see the next civilizations fall and collapse

When the one cycles ends, a new begins
who knew that reversed pictures of the past is an absolute bangar
The only one who could tell future life that the Void is worse than a life you make yourself is one who was found worthy of the void and rejected it for something less peaceful, for the greater good.
It's immortality in any of three ways; the only remaining possibility for eternal death is The Rot, but even that has it’s doubts, and might be worse than even Echo-hood.
Not only does rain world have an amazing and unique art style but the soundtrack is equally as amazing, You can really feel the passion and mood in these songs.
rubicon is such mysterious place
Is it our dreams?
Or this is place that guardians recreated out of void fluid?
And most interesting is *what* is on the other side? Because moon said (when you give her pearl from filtration system) that everything that dissolved by void fluid, gets to the other side of sea
But what is that other side? Is it straight up death? Or some world like heaven or smth?
Saint's ending is so confusing
This... was beyond beautiful and sad.
1:11 hits hard..
Just got to listen to this in game. I cried
" A Choir sung by many who have left, all had been erased to leave the rest for dead. Some choose to persist, while others move on. "
apparently, the cycle is pictures of the past reversed.
Now this makes me want to create A modded campaign that takes place at the end of RAIN WORLD. The slugcat would be the very last of its kind, the world being dissolved by void fluid, everything as we know it warped beyond recognition. The slugcat would journey to the centre of the world to escape the true cycle.
This song makes me want to cry, don’t know why
Trully the point of no return
oh my god. This is reversed song from prologue
Gonna put this on repeat and start another cycle
plot twist, no slugcat except monk ever ascends. all other slugcats are the reincarnations of the same soul, all the way up to saint. /s
If you think, the most (and probably only) suitable Slugcat for ascension is Spearmaster. It does not really have anything that holds it onto this world, unlike the others. Survivor and Monk still hold onto their family, at least for each other. Artificer can not let go her anger and love for her children. Gourmand, well, loves to eat. Rivulet could have sorta affection towards LttM, and finally, Saint is just a loser that though he could take on a void worm and ended up stuck as an echo
the files are somewhat encrypted idk it gives error then i try to listen to them
You know, nothing says that saint *can't* ascend himself.
the cycles is an loop you cannot scape it just accept it.
I'm so fucked up
