INDESIT TUMBLE DRYER LINT TRAP DESIGN FLAW - POSSIBLE FIRE RISK!

  • INDESIT IDV75 VENTED TUMBLE DRYER - THIS ONE IS NOT A RECALL MODEL!! The model number is on the list of possible recalls but a search with the serial number on the Whirlpool website brings up that it is safe and it has a green dot on the machine that indicates it is fine. It’s not fine! The design of the lint “trap” is flawed and allows lint to escape into the housing of the appliance. It doesn’t matter HOW diligent you are in regular maintenance or HOW often you clean out your lint trap and vent hose, you will not stop the seepage of lint into the housing and the only way to get at it is to dismantle it completely. If you take the top off it you can get to what you can see but not to most of the interior behind and below the drum where it accumulates. Even if you hoover out the trap socket, the nozzle on the vacuum cleaner doesn’t reach all the way to the bottom of the slot and won’t suck up what’s lurking below the drum. LINT IS A HIGHLY COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL and reported to be the most common cause of dryer fires! It can collect on the electrical wiring inside and outside of your dryer. If a spark occurs due to wiring issues, lint can fuel this spark, leading to a fire. Also, since lint can build up on your dryer’s heating element and in the vent system, it can cause your dryer to overheat due to overwork. A spark can then occur, igniting any lint present. Because the fibres are so fine and short, they are essentially like kindling-lots of dry, easily ignited surfaces collected into one big clump. These are the precautions you can take yourself but this does not solve the issue of a lint-filled cabinet as nobody is going to completely dismantle a dryer and take the drum out to effect a proper clean - that would be a job for a qualified engineer. You wouldn’t take the fridge apart to defrost it and you shouldn’t have to take a dryer apart if the filter is properly designed and maintained.
    1. Clean the lint filter before or after every load - even if it’s just a small amount. Try to choose a dryer with a properly enclosed trap rather than an open one.
    2. Clean the lint filter with soapy water and a nylon brush at least every 6 months or more frequently if it becomes clogged.
    3. Don’t operate your dryer without the lint filter in place or if it becomes damaged or clogged.
    4. Clean the outside of your dryer regularly, especially the back where lint can build up.
    5. Clean the inside of your dryer regularly. Remove the lint filter, and with a lint brush or vacuum attachment, remove any accumulated lint inside your dryer. At least once a year, have a qualified service technician vacuum the lint out of your dryer.
    6. Disconnect, inspect and clean the dryer vent hose regularly as lint will stick around the inside of it and needs to be dislodged. Check the outside vent cover for airflow occasionally during operation to make sure it’s not blocked.

Thanks for the video. I have the exact machine at the begining of the video and a few years after I bought it Currys contacted me to say that an engineer will be arriving at my home to modify the dryer because of a potential fire hazard fault. The arrived to do the work but they modified something at the back inside the machine. The lint trap at the front is still the same though. This modification was done 5 years ago.

I bought one of these in 2018. From new it had the "green sticker" which the makers claim means it has been modified to address the fluff issue. It has only ever been used on the low heat setting. Also, to make it clear, the lint filter has always been cleaned after every use of the dryer, and the machine had (until now) never been opened up.
It stopped heating this week and when I turned it to the high heat setting (which switches in an additional element) I soon got a scorching smell. I followed on line instructions for opening the case etc. to look at the element. The main case (i.e. the area within the outer cabinet surrounding the rotating drum) had a huge quantity of fluff and lint accumulated, and this blocked a Henry vacuum several times when sucking it all out.
As to the heater, the dryer draws air from the interior of the case and so had obviously been sucking in lint-laden air and blowing it through the heater. The coils of the element that had been used were clear, but those of the element that had not been used were blocked with lint which was then scorching when that element was turned on.
To effect a temporary measure, I thoroughly cleared all of the lint from the entire machine, cleared out the "high heat" element, and disconnected and removed the other element. (I work manufacturing heating elements so do know what I am doing). The element had not failed due to age or use, but had short-circuited to the case with what appears to be an enamelled piece of metal wire - which has legend stamped on it. What purpose that serves I know not but it had been in there from new and must have moved or corroded or something.
So what do I do now. The experience of others of having difficulty with the manufacturers suggests that I am best to buy a new machine manufactured by someone else, throw this one way, and never ever again buy anything made by Indesit or anything else that has anything to do with Whirlpool. On the face of it, there is an underlying problem that has not been addressed. I conduct R&D with elements at work for my own benefit - I do not run risks at home for the benefit of multi-national corporations.

John, this is classic incendiary appliance territory so for heaven's sake try not to use it unsupervised or if you can afford to, replace it and put it somewhere while you battle it out. I can probably give you some advice on several ways to proceed if you can contact me. I battled with Hotpoint and won in the end but it's quite complicated. If you can get in touch via my website we can make contact. www.teifiriverbank.com

We also have a completely contained lint trap; be warned, smaller particles will still get through and collect underneath the trap, and further into the pipe. Ours was completely blocked with sodden, heavy lint. The only solution is 6 monthly pull out, remove vent pipe and pull out lint from rear of machine as well as hooking out under the lint trap. If it's dry use a hoover pipe. As is with all things, regular maintenance is key.

This Indesit machine is the same exact machine as the Creda TVR2 from 2004 when whirlpool (old Phillips) took over recalls were sent out for fluff getting into the heater matrix from guess what the filter.. they have known about this for years and the indesit is the exact same design no changes from the original creda model tvr2. We had the Creda TVR2 and it lasted a long time till the bearings went I repaired it and it was fine then whirlpool took over and we received a recall for a fire hazard. (I am a NHS multi skilled maintenance technician ) I stripped the dryer down and the heater matrix was full of fluff/ lint so we decided to get another brand and did not bother with the recall as the Creda got scrapped.

We clean out the trap religiously after every use but most of it appeared to go inside the machine instead and didn't take long to build up to a "hot" smell with a hot to touch casing. I can't believe they are still allowed to sell the things but am loving the new well-designed Zanussi!

Since this video randomly popped up into my feed even though I am in the US, the only conclusion I have for the excessive lint accumulation is because of the positive airflow design (pushes air through the heating element, drum, lint filter). Positive airflow dryers tend to accumulate lint fairly quickly since the drum is pressurized and anywhere lint and air can escape, it will since it isn’t a 100% seal. Negative airflow dryers (pulls air through the heating element, drum, and through the lint filter) don’t accumulate lint nearly as fast since the drum isn’t pressurized and rather is under a slight vacuum which will result in little to no lint buildup.

I have an Indesit IDV75UK tumble dryer that "has been fixed" by Whirlpool (who own Indesit). Yet I find lint all around the outer of the drum and the bottom of the machine, even large clumps on the heating elemant. Luckily, I have caught this in time before any fire. My thoughts are now that Whirlpool hasn't done enough to stop the risk of a fire.
It needs a metal box to capture the lint that can be hoovered out every now and then

I can't agree given what happened to my alleged "frost free" freezer, of which the cabinet completely filled with ice after two years and stopped working, but with the temperature still showing -18 degrees! Nothing I had done wrong, another of those design faults they do so well! It took two full days to defrost and I had another battle with them to get it refunded, along with compensation for the lost food. That was also replaced with a Zanussi which has no issues whatsoever and simply sits in the corner and works!

Hi there ! I have had a result with this and they have refunded the full value of the dryer now with a bit of a fight. Have you checked your serial number on their website to see if it's a recalled model? Mine wasn't but lint is the reason for the recall so I believe they should all be on the list!! If your dryer is less than 6 years old you still have rights with the retailer on the purchase but really this should be brought to the attention of Whirlpool to deal with and as a fire risk they should be taking this seriously. Are you on Facebook as I moderate on a support group on there where there is plenty of advice and also contact information for Whirlpool. facebook.com/groups/913800238733344/about/

That makes it a fire risk and you should go back to the retailer under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if it is less than 6 years old and don't let them fob you off by telling you it's out of guarantee or to go to the manufacturer - you have no contract with them, the retailer took your money. • @RottiDog21
      @RottiDog21  2 года назад +1

It does on the Zanussi dryer but it's a better design than the Indesit. If wispy lint is escaping the trap you wouldn't see it going into the cabinet but once in there it will stick together and clump so it might be an idea to take the top off and check.

Then you've been extremely fortunate - so far! Have you looked inside the casing to check for lint build-up? We cleaned the trap after each use but the design allows it to escape into the housing which is when it becomes a fire risk. It's all down to the design.

After a huge amount of toing and froing driven by myself - you clearly don't care if my family and I burn to death - we finally establish that the tumble dryer I have in my house can never be used again. Because there is a risk the machine you manufactured and supplied might kill people. And your solution? To offer me options that either cost me money to 'upgrade', involve repairing the machine that your engineer cut the cable off (so that option doesn't work). And then splendidly (and yes there is full on sarcasm going on here) also offers a free replacement BUT WITH NO STOCK AVAILABLE and with ABSOLUTELY NO INFORMATION WHEN IT WILL BE. Seriously!! Why did the "engineer" cut off the plug? The engineer is supposed to modify the machine. Did they ask your permission first before cutting the cable from the machine? Well I've had a Whirlpool hob that leaked gas, a Whirlpool oven that wouldn't turn off, a Hotpoint washing machine that the bearings failed in two years and a tumble dryer that spent years trying to burn my house to the ground (when it did finally decide to burn, I unplugged it and left it outside) I'm never buying anything from that group of companies ever again.

    • @RottiDog21

@@davidhunt240 He cut off the plug and put the red sticker on to stop it being used. The "modification" does not work as it is not the door latch causing problems as they claim, it is the design of the lint trap that allows it to get into the machine and eventually ignite. As this was my third new machine (I would not accept the modification) they were on dodgy ground and issued a full refund. I am now Whirlpool free with a Samsung washing machine and Zanussi tumble dryer and freezer. Frankly I'm amazed they are still in business with the rubbish they make!
