THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT FROM A REMAKE of the old classics. Don't change the formula. Don't change the blocky game play. Just update the graphics. Add those nice water effects, add plants, add stony textures, mud, fog etc.

Totally agree. Don't know until now why they change things when its not necessary. If we love a game, we love it for what it is.
Nostalgia is blinding you, why do you want blocky gameplay?
@@holliswilliams8426 other type of controls are spoiling you. The classic tomb raiders are built using this blocky gameplay, that's not to say they're bad or that you gotta put up with them, like any other game you just gotta get used to them

I agree with the gameplay part. Not so much the blocky part. Only because I feel like the grid system limited certain navigation aspects in the classics whereas a non-grid system would allow for a better range of traversal and maneuvering that add to the puzzle solving and combat. Like TRAE or TRAoD

I love that 1st person view, you can feel the momentum and you don't want to stop, it’s like Mirror's Edge

@@Raidercast it really is, i have not played TR3 in a very long time and look forward to revisiting it in higher quality textures, i see issues with lost artefact as it doesn't seem to work in regard to lara grabbing the first wall, would this be an issue with the game mod itself or perhaps the file for that level was problematic? It's only 3mb i see, im not 100% sure so pardon me if im wrong
Likely just that TR2/3/4 are very unfinished on this project. She can't sprint, switches don't work, I don't think you can interact with pickups etc.
Completed this last week, the graphics are so gorgeous, excited for the projects future❤️
Openlara is awesome! I learned about it just recently while having trouble playing tomb raider in linux on my very old laptop. I'm amazed by how smoothly it runs on meager hardware. As computer engineering advances, and old methods are becoming obsolete or unsupported, it's going to get harder to access old software and games like this. It's great to see someone keeping the old tomb raider games playable as well as making some optimizations to take advantage of new tech. and it's open source so theoretically anyone can help the project along!
Fandom can make amazing mods like this one. (I know it's not a mod, it's cause i couldn't find another word to name it) Can't wait to see this water in Sacred Lake TR4. 🦚

Always thought it was supposed to be underground hence why satellite imaging hasn't realised dinosaurs still exist, plus kinda why they survived the extinction event :P

The new remasters need this type of water effects (and more). Absolutely gorgeous! Has anyone ported this to homebrew ps3 yet?
Ditto! Hope someone ports these effects into the remasters, surprisingly xproger is the lead for the same, but not sure why he wouldn't add these amazing effects

I played with OpenLara. While I think it's amazing, it still needs time to be developed further. Even in Tomb Raider 1, some of the scenes with enemies such as the bear in the caves level don't play the same as the original game: in this instance, the bear was very easy to kill, as it couldn't find the way out from its room to kill me
fun fact: Open Lara has not only been used to enhance the games, but also port the first Tomb Raider game into several other systems, a 3DS port is already working perfectly, but there's also a 3DO and EVEN A GBA PORT in development
You activate the fly mode with the key "O" to get where you wanna get and once there press left Shift key to get back to normal. 5 to save and 9 to load.
good stuff, OpenLara has come so far. I'm one of the contributing people to that github repo at the beginning, recognized those level names right away 😎
I've already replayed TR1 twice in the last month but now I'm going to have to replay it a few more times!

Ok...this is amazing! I also figured you were using mods in some of the footage, but man, this is so much easier and it looks incredible. It's got me thinking about a first person Tomb Raider game now, almost like Mirrors Edge or something. Can't wait to try this later, thanks for the video!

@@Raidercast Still easily one of the most iconic scenes in TR history. They ruined it by turning it into a cutscene in Anniversary, but man, the real time moment in the original was both mind blowing and horrifying heh good times.

Wish I could play this "remaster"on my android , I have them all , but this is to just replay my childhood masterpieces! Man good job!!!!
you can using a browser, controls. lol that is another story
I know I'm answering a 2 year old commentary, but you can play it on Android, there are ports of open lara for various platforms, including Android.

I've heard of OpenLara but I never ever knew it was as easy as visiting a website to actually play it o_O Fun experience playing TR1 on my MacBook!

I haven't heard of any further updates, but the last I heard the people working on it were trying to reverse engineer the files, or something? They said it would likely be a few months.

Started watching your video. Got super hyped. Loaded a level from TR3. It was super glitchy. Then I finished watching your video and you mentioned it wasn't compatible with TR3 yet. Haha I got too hyped. Still it's amazing that TR1 can be played in a browser! I will try it out!

Square Enix should just hire that guy to release a classic pack of TR games officially for modern systems, complete with high framerates, achievement support and toggleable visual enhancements.
Something like this would have been amazing for an anniversary celebration... Instead we got a cookbook. Yay.

@@Raidercast I would love to be optimistic, but square hasn't shown classic TR any love recently and seem to be happy pretending those games don't exist. Also if there was anything exciting to announce, wouldn't they have done it for the video?

@@Reds-Retros But we're only in the beginning of the anniversary. There's still the whole year for them to come up with something.
I wasn't too optimistic at all either not long ago, but since they changed a few people in there (game director IIRC?) and announced a unification of the timelines recently, I think we can be hopeful again that something nice will happen in the future.
They just won't show all the big stuff right at the beginning of the year for obvious reasons, and will probably wait until the end instead.
Thank you so much for this, I only recently uncovered OpenLara, and I had no idea you can use the games' local lvl files to open them in there. This will be a great expedition

The lost valley is totally soulless with a skybox. It also removes the black distance fog, so the area looks much smaller. Too bad you can't turn it off. However I reached the Colosseum which has a much darker skybox and it fits to the area perfectly.
U can also play multiplayers I tested with my friends and that was so cool 😍

There are people who contribute even with codes for bug fixes. There's only one guy working on it but a huge community helping him out.
And you were actually the one who pointed me towards the project. So thanks to you!
When I originally investigated OpenLara, I got frustrated with the overly complicated methods of 'extracting' the files from the Steam versions of the game. All the command line instructions that I found online were useless. I did manage to get a torrent of all the games file pre configured, but was further frustrated by all the bugs in the later games. Kinda gave up on the whole thing. I didn't realise until this video that it was buggy for everyone! I've got very little patience for hacking PC games to work like I did back in the 2000's. I think I'll give it a few years to see how it goes.

I never got a chance to play the classic TR games, so a nice remaster with updated controls could be nice!
The classic games are timeless so they're perfectly enjoyable even in the default version. I would highly recommend buying them on Steam.

i have. a question. in tomb raider legend when you finish a level theres this selected outfit screen that i thought lara would wear in the next level but she did not. i wonder why that is? i noticed this when i finished level 1 bolivia when you want to continue theres this selected outfit screen of a jacket that black one with orange stripe. i’m not talking about replay level.

I‘m using OpenLara mostly for modding because its more modern and so easier to Mod than the originals
The T-rex valley is actually a cave that's why in the original the skybox was black.
No, the developers wanted it to be an open valley. Still I think it looks much cooler. And it's much more interesting to imagine it's in a cave.
How do you access the free camera? Cant find it 😭 also is the water effect disabled on Mac? Cause it’s not there... please please help 🙈😘
Hey, I've heard the water effect doesn't work on mac unfortunately. To use freecam you need a gaming controller - if you hit "H" when playing it brings up the controls, and I think you need to click both analog sticks in at once to activate freecam.
As much as I love all of this, I still rather have that black skybox. I don't know, it just looks so... ominous. I know a black sky is not realistic, but we're already fighting a T-Rex, so realism is not something I'm worried about lol
Same here, made it seem more underground and claustrophobic, the way I liked it in the OG TR1
I wish TR 2 would work fully not just TR 1. It was my favorite of the 5 first games.

I’ve been replaying Tomb Raider featuring Lara Croft with OpenLara on my Mac and have been absolutely loving it and recording the levels for my channel but I still don’t know how to get the other Tomb Raider games to load in my web browser

As far as I'm aware it was only ever going to be the first Great Wall level and the Manor, and I don't think it'll be too long before we get to play the manor!

It would be awesome if they just remade Tomb Raider 2 like the way they did with Anniversary or else just make a new modern tomb Raider game but make her actually use her 2 guns, wear shorts and do backflips etc. like classic Lara Croft.
Why can’t we get a collection like this, instead of that survivor trilogy that every fan has probably played up to this point. Square needs to stop ignoring the classics and really celebrate the franchise’s roots.

You can download the level files from the link provided, and open them on the website via the 'Browse level' button.

Sadly the ennemi IA is completly broken, the ennemies don't attack Lara anymore so you can shoot them easy ( I wonder how the openlara dev can change that, does he have to re-code completly the IA ?

i got all of them on steam but some i cant get the controllers to work for
How did they reverse engineer the code to enable first person view? I can understand how the water shaders were implemented but the new features impress me.
I do have the original Tomb Raider games on Steam but not the Remastered collection.
Is OpenLara a good alternative to the Remastered collection?
Good question. In some ways, yes. But OpenLara really only works with TR1. Even if enemies are a bit 'stupider', every switch and item works correctly so you can play it through to the end. (However there are no FMV cutscenes included!)
TR2 and TR3 are fine to load up levels and just explore, but switches and enemies don't work, so it's quite limited, albeit very pretty to look at in HD 60FPS!

They merely forgot in the binding menu to display what key we need to push to jump. Slight oversight 🙂 (it is D)
you can also play in coop in local split screen if you press start if one player use keyboard just press start with a controller

When I first played it I either thought it was night or underground, yeah. But I guess "Valley" can only suggest it was supposed to be outdoors!
@@Raidercast It doesn't matter what the cave is called. The first set of levels takes place inside of a snowy mountain.
the water effect ain`t working 4 me. Plus I can`t find its core on retroarch. What can I do?
I had someone tell me the water effect isn't working for them, and they're using a mac. Aside from that, I've only used the in-browser version so I've no idea about the downloadable files I'm afraid.

The graphics with OpenLara are really amazing, but it's not fun to play when the enemies are not attacking lara :(

It stutters in Google Chrome and items in the menu are all black. Works flawlessly great in Internet Explorer when it comes to graphics, but zero audio.
So odd, works totally fine in chrome for me. Someone also told me the water effects don’t appear on their Mac.
@@Raidercast Just checked on Edge, works great, but the water is set to Low with no other options. ^^
I'm trying to use the standalone version for Windows, it supports PSX images, but I can't seem to get it working.
I've only used the browser version I'm afraid.
Hi, I love your content. It totally sparked by love for the earlier games again (dusting off my ps3 😅). Question, if I play open lara I can’t seem to get the water effects. I dowloaded the corresponding files and can play this. But there’s no changes expect it being sharper and the “extra” 🤣 shadow. I play it on my browser on an iMac... any help to get those beautiful water effects? In the menu screen the water is always set on low....

I low-key hoped it was some mod. I recently replayed my tr1 on dosbox vand was struck how bad it looked and it was locked on 30fps on my gaming rig.
