Not easy to answer at all. It all depends what you want from your car. Some people like the unpredictable feeling of a rear end - like the 1M - others the more stable, planted, grippy ride. The more fun toy is likely the previous M2 Comp, but again, this new one can also be dialed to be fun. There is an M Track mode with 10 settings, but I didn't have a chance to test it properly. I would like to go for the 6 speed manual but in South Africa it's an R8000 option which, in my opinion, kinda varies based on the driver, I am a fan of the manual gearbox but logically and financially speaking, the 8 speed automatic would be the better choice for the majority people but if you want a manual, cool go for it. 😊 PS: You can kinda have the feel of shifting using the paddles. 😂
@@bmwblogExcellent review. Do you think there is more lag with the manual vs auto or compared to F87 Comp manual? I’m worried the boost threshold is higher and turbos larger on S58 vs S55.
Here's how I see the G87 M2: - No one is happy that it has manual transmission. - Everyone wants F87 v2. - Everyone acting like it weighs same as V12 AMGs like S65. Just so you know, the F87 felt like a 1M with a different name. This looks much better. Nice review Horatiu! Keep up the good work!
I get it, but it's a long production cycle. You can always get another production slot. Go drive both cars. Don't rely only on reviews. We are all so different as journalists, RUclipsrs, whatever. Auto will be faster on track, but with the manual as long as I’m improving my lap times, it doesn’t matter. It all about getting better in whatever car you bring.
@@bmwblog- You avoided answering the question posed at the beginning. You must decide which one so,answer the question. It’s only fair! You can only buy one. Which one would you buy?
I watched the entire video which was very long and very verbose and somewhat redundant than you give reasons for liking both. I guess you simply don’t buy the M2 because you can’t decide. Just but the M240 since it doesn’t come with a manual! That’s the answer!😊👍🏻😂
I’ve watched the whole video, but I don’t think you answered which transmission is more fun. Throttle House said the automatic is much more fun so I was surprised.
There is no such thing as more fun. It really comes down to you. I saw the TH. Their complaint is the same that we've always seen with the BMW six speed. So to me? It was no surprise. Now if you really want me to answer the question: if I'm keeping this car for a long time, manual.
Actually prefer the M steeringwheel in non M cars over this one. It’s more concaved, and has some sculpted aluminium peace in it, that i really like. This looks really flat
I was going to wait for this but ended up getting a 997.2 911 turbo in a manual.. After all of the reviews, I don't regret my decision but may take a look at the M2 again if they come out with the CS
Good and thorough review. 🤜🤛 I as am m240i owner can't afford or _should not_ stretch financially to buy an m2. I don't think it is a beautiful car but it looks very purposeful. I'm a fan.
So, basically just another manual transmission review. I’m really sick of the vast reviews of the M2 reviews being on the manual. If you haven’t noticed, ALL of the true sports cars have automatics. Why buy the slower version of the M2? You’re not 17 anymore. Grow up.
This was one of the first M2 reviews ever made. The cars available were manual and automatic. You can see that we tested the automatic also. So not sure what review you watched
Also, do you think it's worth it to get regular Vernasca seat for Manual Trans? Straight Pipes claiming heel-toe is encumbered because of the Carbon seats middle bulge.
My question to you is this: do you really heel-toe in daily driving? I like the carbons, but I hate getting in and out because I'm tool. I would pick the sport seats.

try and buy a new one, the dealership truly acts like they are doing you a favor to get you one as you pay through the nose. my old one works just fine thank you
@@bmwblog the gearing is shorter on the 8-speed. The manual shifter felt vague and rubbery. The clutch is lifeless. It felt like M just did that cause people ask for it but didn’t care much about it
Bullshit, the air intake has been formed to match the design, not the other way around. The design specs for the car had rectangular intakes long before a single part has been produced. There is no excuse for the crappy looks.
Was enough honestly. Didn't need more time than that. If you wanna see the automatic, we posted a full video just on that ruclips.net/video/staS-kIVvIY/видео.html
@@bmwblog yes, design that they were given. They wouldn’t have set out to make the car drive bigger and heavier but as a result of this latest generation of M3/M4 being very heavy vehicles and the fact that the M2 inherits the hand me downs is why it is so heavy. There is no reason why a relatively small (by today’s standards) 2 door coupe should weigh 3,860lbs. I had high hopes that this car would be more than the sum of its parts but to be completely honest the reviews have all been pretty lackluster 😞
@@jameswillard1 fair points. But I went in knowing what to expect. I know how BMW works. The M2 was just going to be an M2. Nothing more. An entry level daily driver M that can do multiple things. It was not meant to be a GT3 Porsche. So if you go in with that mindset, it's a great car. If you compare it to a CSL or Porsche, maybe fall short a bit. All about expectations.
@@Levente20 I wouldn't say 10x better. Just better but different. So it depends. Some people might like the more raw driving experience of the F87. I have a 1M, so I can relate. But I like the more refined G87.

PS: You can kinda have the feel of shifting using the paddles. 😂
Interesting how each market is different. It's free in the US
@@bmwblog Yes, yall are lucky that it's a free option, I checked on the website that it's an R8500 option for the manual gearbox.
BUT with one is more fun on road, manual or automatic?
Hmm tough one. On fast roads, manual. But auto is easier to push harder
@@bmwblogExcellent review. Do you think there is more lag with the manual vs auto or compared to F87 Comp manual? I’m worried the boost threshold is higher and turbos larger on S58 vs S55.
been waiting for this vid
Sorry if it's too long. We went crazy
You had talk with the engineers so i have a question. How long m2 manual will be on the sale? Thanks.
There is no definitive answer. Plus each market is different. So we'll see
Until the end of the production run when there is enough demand
Fabulous review mon ami!!!!
Glad you liked it
Greatest car journalist in the world, only wish the video had been longer, well done thou. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
This video was way too long. I agree :)) It won't happen again. Went crazy with the details
Aren’t base versions of M3 and M4 available with 6-speed manual as well?
Yes
@@bmwblogM4 isn't.
BMW needs to offer more colors period..! Namely a metallic silver a bit darker shade would be perfect.
There will be a lot of colors coming next year. We published an article on the website on this
Here's how I see the G87 M2:
- No one is happy that it has manual transmission.
- Everyone wants F87 v2.
- Everyone acting like it weighs same as V12 AMGs like S65.
Just so you know, the F87 felt like a 1M with a different name. This looks much better. Nice review Horatiu! Keep up the good work!
Can't please everyone :) yes. The F87 was much closer to the 1M. Thank you for the kind words.
Great video. I’ll take the manual!
Not a bad choice
I'm struggling about which transmission to go with.
Still on the fence, by the time I make a decision they will be sold out.😅
I get it, but it's a long production cycle. You can always get another production slot. Go drive both cars. Don't rely only on reviews. We are all so different as journalists, RUclipsrs, whatever. Use our reviews as reference points for when you do your own drive and see if your experience is the same.
@@bmwblog Thank you, I've sat watching the different reviews and ended up more lost,.But I think you are right go test.
(I have a manual GR Yaris which I love but don't use it much, as i like that car for tracks and fast country lanes).
Looking to get a new daily car that was fun, after having my manual Land Rover for 15yrs.
Anyway great review Cheers for the response.
@@popsbubbles1242 let me know what you will end up choosing. Curious
@@bmwblog Will do. Cheers.
Celestial blue!💙💙
In some ways
Auto will be faster on track, but with the manual as long as I’m improving my lap times, it doesn’t matter. It all about getting better in whatever car you bring.
It depends what you buy the car for. The manual is fun for daily driving
@@bmwblogi just got rid of a manual G82 M4 and M340i, my track car and daily driver. Combined them into the G87 manual, and I’ll be tracking it.
As 1m owner myself....I really wonder how it compares to this? Looking to add something new to my garage!
Very different. Not many similarities. Maybe just the super wide track. Wait for an even more special M2 to pair with 1M. Thinking the same
Do you think there will be an M2 G87 Competition??
So far, none planned. M2 CS will likely come at some point.
So you would pick the Manual over the automatic, right?
Not necessarily
I think the older M2 was better in manual, but this version is better as an auto, the gear box is far better.
The auto is great in this one. A bit boring to me, but good
Own a 2025 M2 manual and live in TN best driving state in the east manual all the way
Jealous. In IL, barely any good roads
Ces voitures ont t’elles les suspensions pilotées où est ce une option possible ? 🥰
Not possible
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, It has such a wide stance, must be so good on curves!
It definitely is
You knew you were going o say 6 speed manual before the video even started.
Ha. Wasn't sure. I still like the 8-Speed auto in some cases
🔥
Actually prefer the M steeringwheel in non M cars over this one. It’s more concaved, and has some sculpted aluminium peace in it, that i really like. This looks really flat
It's all based on preference really. There is no right or wrong
I prefer my 2022M4 in Brooklyn Gray.
Nothing wrong with that. This is why there are options
good nobody cares.
Do vs the m240i
Eventually. But I don't think my opinion will change much. You can scroll to the section where I talk about the 2 cars
I was going to wait for this but ended up getting a 997.2 911 turbo in a manual.. After all of the reviews, I don't regret my decision but may take a look at the M2 again if they come out with the CS
You can't go wrong with the 911. No offense to the new M2 :) The CS will likely come
How much?
A 20 minute video you do it for an hour😂
Good and thorough review. 🤜🤛
I as am m240i owner can't afford or _should not_ stretch financially to buy an m2.
I don't think it is a beautiful car but it looks very purposeful. I'm a fan.
Thanks, it wasn't an easy one todo :) The M240i is a great car, don't feel bad
The baby M car fully undressed (reviewed) and an awesome in depth look. 😁
That would have been a great title
Got it. You prefer auto. But I ordered a manual.
:) Nothing wrong with auto
So, basically just another manual transmission review. I’m really sick of the vast reviews of the M2 reviews being on the manual. If you haven’t noticed, ALL of the true sports cars have automatics. Why buy the slower version of the M2? You’re not 17 anymore. Grow up.
This was one of the first M2 reviews ever made. The cars available were manual and automatic. You can see that we tested the automatic also. So not sure what review you watched
Pleeeeaase review the 25
If they make an x-drive version I would buy one. Please BMW make this car.
They will make one. But still a bit to go
But will you choose AT or MT?
Also, do you think it's worth it to get regular Vernasca seat for Manual Trans? Straight Pipes claiming heel-toe is encumbered because of the Carbon seats middle bulge.
I explained above, but let me recap. If I'll keep the car for a long time, manual. If it's for 2-3 years, automatic.
My question to you is this: do you really heel-toe in daily driving? I like the carbons, but I hate getting in and out because I'm tool. I would pick the sport seats.
@@bmwblog thank you for your insight. I am shorter than you but much wider. I placed my order for Toronto Red with MT and Carbon pack. Let’s see how i fare. Mainly to drive in NYC in place of my E71 which I have been fixing for a while.
fire
for me, I preferred auto, tired of shifting.
I would love to see a drag race between m240i x drive vs m2 would be close
Soon. Working on it
that front headlight looks like a KIA headlights. overall, i thought they would ruined it all but it has grown on me since the m3/m4 grill looks hideous. I dont mind the new M2. thank you for the video!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Overall, yes, the design could have been better. But at the same time, I didn't want just an improved F87 design. Something new
I’d purchase an X Dr. into all day long
It’s a car 90% of the owners will drive to the shops and look at it in their garages….
True. Few will see the track
try and buy a new one, the dealership truly acts like they are doing you a favor to get you one as you pay through the nose. my old one works just fine thank you
Those headlights look Ghey
I would go for the automatic
Why?
@@bmwblog the gearing is shorter on the 8-speed. The manual shifter felt vague and rubbery. The clutch is lifeless. It felt like M just did that cause people ask for it but didn’t care much about it
Bullshit, the air intake has been formed to match the design, not the other way around. The design specs for the car had rectangular intakes long before a single part has been produced. There is no excuse for the crappy looks.
Just telling you what BMW designers told us. If they lied to us, then I guess it's on us
2024 10 months ago ?
We updated the date since it's the same car.
only the last 9 min in the Automatic
Was enough honestly. Didn't need more time than that. If you wanna see the automatic, we posted a full video just on that ruclips.net/video/staS-kIVvIY/видео.html
Adro please try and save this front end on this car 😭🤢🤮
Really great car but it will never be as naughty as the F87
By design though. They decided it to make it different
Yea the g87 is 10 times better then the f87
The rear only a mother could love and the front looks like a Dodge truck. What drugs are BMW designers on or are they hiring based on something besides merit?
The m240i is quicker off the line 😂
The xDrive, maybe.
Exterior design is terrible. BMW has officially gone backwards towards the Bangle era again. Such a shame.
Bangle era is considered great
@@bmwblog Sure, to Stevie Wonder. LoL
@@JapplesnapBangle designed E46 and original Z4 and almost all of his design elements were adopted by the rest of the industry.
REAL MAN DRIVES MANual !!!
Sorry guys...Former factory trained BMW mechanic, owner and still rider. I recall when BMW's were smart, clean and handsomely designed automobiles but this?? Meh... It's UGLY!!!
It is not handsome. No one claimed that. But drives really well. I'll take that
Wow…you sure can talk.
And is that a bad thing or?
@@bmwblogNeither good nor bad. Just an observation.
Burn it with fire! Nice interior though
Funny that I'm not a huge fan of the interior, mostly because of the display. The finishes and seats are great. The exterior, I like some parts - the wide track - I dislike others - the strange lower bumper.
So you can outthink a computer 🖥 right automatic is faster period, so why the fiction.
I explained why someone would pick the manual. It's not about performance
@BMWBLOG I enjoyed your review, I understand the manual mentality; however performance is the M .
@@jefflarson4221 No doubt. Let's see what the future brings. Maybe some other M2s with more performance.
@@bmwblog BMW just keeps getting better every day.
