You make an excellent point about the limits of modern sports cars being so high that they don't "come alive" or feel involving at safe speeds on the road. I feel that way about my F87 M2 Comp, and I'm sure it's even more true with this new M2. In this era of "more" being "better," though, I wonder if manufacturers will ever return to smaller, lighter, more involving sportscars.
Agree, found the limits of grip and handling on my first cars, M140i used to give me the fear in anything less than good conditions. Current RS3, barely had a moment, slight bit of understeer in the wet on a crap road. Taking it over my usual B roads, speed is the limiting factor, what I’m prepared to do on a public road.
I owned an F87 OG M2 for three years, and while it's a fun car, BMW just didn't get the inputs right. It left me wanting in terms of feedback and tactility which is part of the reason I sold it. If you're looking for that connected experience, cars like the Civic Type R, Integra Type S, Cayman/Boxster, Miata, Blackwings, Corvette, etc. still offer it today.

The best BMW I have ever driven was the old Z4M. Telepathic controls. Steering was not 987 good but close enough. The way S54 behaves in that car though, wow. Maybe i am too old but 1M is amazing one of 6300 collectable piece with analog and unforgettable car feeling where M2 is just another todays BMW. M2 is maybe faster but that’s actually bad in terms of enjoyment and feeling of the car same way like EVs are even faster but we all know EVs have no feeling and no soul.
Amazing point this is ejy I had to really give myself a reality check ; because modern care are fun to go fast and beat ppl off the line at the lights but the feeling of engagement at low speeds and rpm’s is exactly why I love older cars!!

I just cannot get to liking the look. The front headlights looks like bambi looking at you, compared to the angry angel eyes to the previous. And the rear is just a mess
M-Performance seats + an exhaust will blow your mind on a 1M. Never owned a car that an exhaust made such a difference in sound. M-seats allow you to feel through your seat and your hands.
I had the 1m in valencia orange and it was just a fantastic car 😊 also the f87 m2 both were great fun cars that looked and sounded great👍 good to see the 1m in a review . didn't know there was individual painted one's though. that java green❤

The new M2 has gained more than 10% of weight over the 1M. It’s about 13.3% which may seem small but it really is a lot. Give the 1M modern tyres of similar width to the M2 as well as improved dampers and perhaps some anti roll bars and it would narrow performance gap considerably. There is no reason the M2 should weigh more than 1600kg.

I test drove the G87 and loved it in manual form, having just come out 600 LT it felt great tbf, BMW just need to look at reducing the APR rates more in line with more standard models they produce, yes I know the reason why the do it 👍
We've had our G87 for a few weeks now and love it. Think it looks great. They don't photograph well I have to admit but it does look good and impressive in the flesh. Have had other M2s and feel the G87 is more of a grown up car that can do it all very well. Remains to be seen how well it will age and stand up to past models. You must be real busy Joe with all the content on the channel lately. Always good to hear your honest opinions and quality content.👍 Cheers
@@bassitos That's because it's designed horribly. There is no flow to angles, it looks like a car that has a cheap wide body kit bolted onto it. This causes reflections to suddenly end abruptly, it's just terrible. Looks the same in the flesh, from some angles even worse than on pictures.
The first frame depicting the two cars from the front and my only thought is: "Wow, that new M2 looks so bad, even the old 1M looks more stable and aggressive. It's like a piece of soap with 4 wheels on it". I am amazed, no ... astounded this got released to the public in that state. Just mind boggling ...

Counter arguement - having driven a 1M relatively extensively... it has a ton of feel and is incredibly playful at the expense of any real usefulness. It can't go down any track fast, its extremely unstable, is very snappy and is overall a terrible performance car. The M235i (a non m car) of the gen after, could be it on just about any track (these are bmw stats)...
Thanks for the video as always buddy! Great comparison to highlight the perceived differences and actual differences. Regarding the front ends. I did drive the G82 M4 (on a BMW M Driving Experience day) on track last year and I still remember how epic the front end was and that was even on Pirellis ..... I think the M2 looks quite much better IRL compared to what one sees in pictures and videos! I am an odd one I did like the M3 and M4 looks from the get go :D With regards to be able to use the cars abilities! I do have an MX5 which I do love but I often feel (depending on type of road) that it is lacking grunt. Which is is the opposite of being able to use the cars abilities on the roads e.g with the M2 or other fast cars. On the right road it is a blast and it feels like one is going much quicker than what the speedo says. But on other type of roads it's just not having it in my opinion. I did have have 2018 Mustang GT which is more or less the opposite car to the MX5 but I felt that I had same amount of fun (but different fun) in that car! Both cars can get you in trouble with the law inforcement as such just that one does get their quicker :D see you on the next!
I really love your unbiased review in this episode. This M2 gets a lot of hate, especially from people who have never seen ( in real life ), or definitely not driven this car to judge it accurately. After daily driving a proper 6 speed for 3 months, I’m blown away at what BMW has achieved, an incredible machine that does everything so well.
With every release of a new car from any enthusiast brand those tried and true loyalist scream that the best has already come and gone. Pretty sure every M car since the E30 M3 has had someone somewhere claiming the best has already happened and there will never be another legendary M car again. To each their own, to me they are all amazing fun cars… But given the 1M and G87 M2 are effectively the same price at launch (correcting for inflation) there’s not a chance in hell I’m taking a 1M over a G87!

The new G87 M2 isn't the prettiest M car ever made, but fk me, it looks much better than that ugly, dumpy, sad-eyed, chopped off back end, 1 series coupe. I quite like it, although it's not as pretty as the OG M2. It's a much better car in every way than the horrid 1M. It's sad how grown men who have never been near a 1M, cream their panties over them, "ooh they are the best, they have hydraulic steering" lol, yet almost everyone who has driven a 1M back to back with an OG M2 or M2C and posted the video on RUclips, say the same thing. The 1M steering is very good, but the electric steering in the OG M2 and M2C is very close to being just as good. In every other way, the OG M2 and M2C are both much better cars, and I mean in every way. The only thing the 1M has in it's favour is rarity, and that makes it valuable. So valuable, that nobody can afford to risk driving them, so they sit as garage queens, tucked away.

I find the problem with dash cams is they don’t capture side on incidental. Other than that the 622 and rear cam work great and I’m about to install the 522. The 1M Coupe all day for me
With all the recent developments in computerised design, AI etc. I can’t help wondering how large the budget the BMW Style Dept. has for Ugly Sticks? And how many they have worn out or broken in designing the last couple of generations of cars. Hope they recycle them, thinking of the environment.

Just visited a Sytner dealer last weekend which had a M2 with all the M performance kit on including what is without doubt the most stupid looking exhaust I’ve ever seen on a car, as for the extra’s I assume the designer was on some seriously strong Narcotics at the time as it has to be the worse looking M car ever made by a Country mile- what were they thinking? Only part I like is the seats and alloys otherwise a complete disaster.

Joe I think it’s a big disservice when you say things about 1M brakes that you never experienced while testing the car. The 1M brakes are fabulous on the street. I drive it so hard on twisty roads where you’d get arrested in western countries and they have never faded. You commented like they will fade but you never experienced it, and you assumed the G M2 is better on track for brakes. They aren’t. I drove the G M2 on track and nearly wrecked because of brake failure from heat.
1M front light so ugly..never liked them... and even less now.. they look like sad girly eyes.... the front end is very out dated looking on the 1m. I like the m2 rear end a lot, not a big fan of the front, but the rest of the M2 look's good, the wide fenders etc.
Still find it funny when people complain about new BMW pricing… That 1M is talked about at a “value” at $47k starting MSRP in 2011 while the G87 M2 is considered by some to be over priced at $63k starting MSRP In reality given inflation that M2 is the exact same starting MSRP today as that 1M was in 2011. I’ll take the G87 anyway, thank you

Either don’t finance it or finance it through a more favourable lender. However any financing company is currently charging 4++ %
Appreciation for the M2 should go up over time, especially if it turns out to be the last petrol only M car as rumoured

If people say it's not an M car because of the N54, then what about the OG M2 non Comp with an N55?

The new G87 M2 isn't the prettiest M car ever made, but fk me, it looks much better than that ugly, dumpy, sad-eyed, chopped off back end, 1 series coupe.
I quite like it, although it's not as pretty as the OG M2.
It's a much better car in every way than the horrid 1M.
It's sad how grown men who have never been near a 1M, cream their panties over them, "ooh they are the best, they have hydraulic steering" lol, yet almost everyone who has driven a 1M back to back with an OG M2 or M2C and posted the video on RUclips, say the same thing. The 1M steering is very good, but the electric steering in the OG M2 and M2C is very close to being just as good.
In every other way, the OG M2 and M2C are both much better cars, and I mean in every way.
The only thing the 1M has in it's favour is rarity, and that makes it valuable. So valuable, that nobody can afford to risk driving them, so they sit as garage queens, tucked away.
Grown on me so much. Actually think the new M2 looks unreal now.
its just basic physics. weight is everything in a sports car. No matter how good you are in hiding it. Real driving pleasure goes down with every kilogram added...

I find the problem with dash cams is they don’t capture side on incidental. Other than that the 622 and rear cam work great and I’m about to install the 522.

With all the recent developments in computerised design, AI etc. I can’t help wondering how large the budget the BMW Style Dept. has for Ugly Sticks?
And how many they have worn out or broken in designing the last couple of generations of cars. Hope they recycle them, thinking of the environment.
"N54 not an M engine" - so BMW didn't make the same mistake twice and put an S in front of the M version of the B58.....
The S58 is twin turbo b58 is single turbo. Not the same case here

M2 is all nice, new and shiny, but if you're taking it over a 1M I think you need your head wobbling.
Trouble is the M2 looks fresh and brand new ,even though I love it to the un trained eye the 1M looks like and old banger lol
I looked it then when they was new out the 1M , loved the wheel arches as in the early 1990s I owned a E30 M3 ,but the interior for me was boring in comparison and a big let down,it’s half an M car the 1M imho .

Never liked the 1 series. Always been disgusting looking to me so definitely taking any m2 over it. In fact I have one 😊

Just visited a Sytner dealer last weekend which had a M2 with all the M performance kit on including what is without doubt the most stupid looking exhaust I’ve ever seen on a car, as for the extra’s I assume the designer was on some seriously strong Narcotics at the time as it has to be the worse looking M car ever made by a Country mile- what were they thinking? Only part I like is the seats and alloys otherwise a complete disaster.

@@BullyBoxerI think that’s what makes it more desirable to people now. If I owned one i would swap the seats to 1M buckets. A friend of mine had one and did that. I wouldn’t care about the rest of the interior

Joe I think it’s a big disservice when you say things about 1M brakes that you never experienced while testing the car. The 1M brakes are fabulous on the street. I drive it so hard on twisty roads where you’d get arrested in western countries and they have never faded. You commented like they will fade but you never experienced it, and you assumed the G M2 is better on track for brakes. They aren’t. I drove the G M2 on track and nearly wrecked because of brake failure from heat.
You also implied as a one car garage the G is better as it has better rear seats. The 1M rear seats are roomier than the G M2.

1M any day over that ugly M2. Silly making these cars bigger & heavier, so backward. That dash layout as well, silly soulless screens.
1M front light so ugly..never liked them... and even less now.. they look like sad girly eyes.... the front end is very out dated looking on the 1m. I like the m2 rear end a lot, not a big fan of the front, but the rest of the M2 look's good, the wide fenders etc.

G87 looks much more badass, muscular, much more presence on the road then 1m
Still find it funny when people complain about new BMW pricing… That 1M is talked about at a “value” at $47k starting MSRP in 2011 while the G87 M2 is considered by some to be over priced at $63k starting MSRP
In reality given inflation that M2 is the exact same starting MSRP today as that 1M was in 2011.
I’ll take the G87 anyway, thank you
