  • Hey guys! A great video to finish the week with more tennis content. I want to share with you a live backhand training lesson that follows different progressions that will improve the backhand from the footwork to the hitting technique!
    Enjoy!

It's a common problem I see on both the backhand and forehand. It's a natural desire to watch where the ball goes after hitting it which results in the player lifting their chest and head at contact. Then the racket face opens, resulting in the ball going long. I am working with my kid to improve it. The "trick" I use is to have her hold the finish position for 2 seconds after contact to build the strength, balance and habit.

Yes, watching the ball too fast is a mistake and can make players miss hit (like no watching at all). Holding position at the end of the stroke is a great training. There, you are isolating one part and exaggerating it to create awareness! Amazing!

I have this as biggest problem. Getting better. Inhave to change my mindset that the point is at contact, not on other side of net!

Great video, great lesson... it really shows you can't "just go out and hit", you have isolate, put in the reps, and then integrate that into your game. It also does illustrate the importance of fitness/strength. I got on the court today after 50 days of not hitting a ball. But in those 50 days, I worked hard on core, stamina, balance... pretty much every footwork drill, jumping drill, etc. you gave us, I did it multiple times. And today on the court, I had to "find my swing" the first few minutes, but the stamina was there. (Funny enough, my one-handed backhand was fine almost from the beginning, hard, heavy topspin.. but the forehand wasn't as consistent).
Also Gaston you are a patient coach. I had to smile when I saw you say 100 times "stay low" and the student would still come up anyway. Not making fun on the student, I've coached other sports and seen the same thing. It helps a lot if you can stay patient, smile and just keep at it... eventually the student gets it.
One other thing -- I've never seen a tennis court with "seams" from different pieces.. but I guess right now, this court is one thousand times better than no court, right? 😂👍🏻

Hey Dan! First great to hear you were back on the courts!! Also, congratulations for all the fitness/footwork training you mentioned you did. That's amazing!! :)
Hahaha gotta be patient man, understand times cuz I was there and I had very patient coaches also! Keep up those fitness trainings, patience on the coming back, shot wills come back slowly!! :) Stay safe!

Coach, I think that left leg stays behind when you are in a defensive position and the ball that you are receiving already has the power, but if you want to put the power on the ball it's okay to release the hips forward and finish with legs parallel to the baseline and recover back. But I understand why you do this progression, balance is key and you are a great coach. Keep it up!

Hi Ivan...Yes depending the ball you receive and what you want to do you will transfer more or less (and at different speeds). When you train isolating things you have to focus on the part you are training. As you said, this progressions are not only training the movement but his brain cus it's a huge change for him! We can't show what to do on every single ball cuz there are no equal balls haha but we can prepare players with the best resources to make the "best" decisions!

Gaston - please also indicate proper technique on holding the racquet for a backhand. Thx

Why did you ask your student to keep bended after he hit the ball? I think it should depends on the coming ball. If the hitting point is lower than normal shot, then keep bended and ballance. Otherwise, player should hitting ball while standing up, which will transfer more power from leg to the ball. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

Because in that specific drill I need him to stay low to improve the balance he is lacking. You can’t tell him to do A B and C if he is struggling with A. As I said in the video, we are working on progressions of the different parts to them have a whole complete and not a whole unbalanced. His main problem is bending back so much on impact, so first we erase that problem by playing low, then once he controlled that we can ad the hitting bending and going up as you mentioned. Thanks!

There was one simple solution to have him stay down and not go up with his body. Put a cone near contact point and tell him to look at the cone for 3 seconds after finishing the swing.

I tell my students to lift up as they hit the shot, but keep their head still. This kid looks up too fast to see where the ball is going. Also, how much you bend your knees depends on the height of the oncoming ball. Right? Thanks for the great videos.

Hey! Yes, it's not that he is looking to fast to the ball, he had a "coach" for years that just let him create so many bad habits ( like lifting the body and bending back). Yes, the knees bent with depend on the high of the ball you get! :)
