  • A New Way to Calm the Mind - A Monk's Approach
Overthinking is a problem many people are now facing more and more. There are both positives and negatives to living in a capitalist world; however, a big side effect is having an active mind. Because of its nature, the mind is always wandering and very active. The issue then becomes - how do you turn in off? Here at Papae in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the monks make it a daily practice to get out in nature and work with their hands. They switch off the intellectual part and allows the mind to rest. This is one of our solution to overthinking and having an active mind. When one gets out in nature, slowly the mind begins to settle. Nature automatically course corrects. #nature #monks #minimalism

l try to go walking every day in a place near my residence. lt's full of plants and animals. Today l saw a species of bird l had never seen before. Doing art helps me calm down my mind and not think too much as l am focused on making my work look right. Are monks allowed to make art (paintings, drawings, sculptures etc)

My entire day is spent on nature. Today, while about to jump a fence. I encountered a walking stick, I had to play or to see what would happen, if, I touched it's antennas. It was interesting, it let me touch and perhaps it was as curious as I.

I completely agree with this. I have a practice of going on a hike at least once a week. This one time a week never stays at that though usually twice a week for a walk or a run. However, when a week comes by where I'm not in the forest, I find myself severely ungrounded. It shakes me to my core that people go months without spending time in nature. Maybe forest bathing would allow us all to think in the direction of the greater good.

Every moment of our lives can be this peaceful. As Ramana Maharishi said, “That which is, is peace. All that we need do is to keep quiet.
Peace is our real nature. We spoil it. What is required is that we cease to spoil it. We are not going to create peace anew.”
There is as much peace and joy where you are as there is in this forest. There is as much peace here and now as there was in your most peaceful moment you can remember. All which is, is peace. Whatever circumstance or situation, Peace is the very thread and yarn which makes up our existence.
This does not mean we do not act from love when necessary. We do. But the underlying current, the making of what is is peace itself.

This is good advise. The saints I have read said that when you enter a religious community, don't look for the complicated work, like brain work; seek out the simplest non-thinking work like cleaning the place, landscaping, maintenance, etc. because you need your MIND TO BE OPEN & EMPTY FOR GOD. I agree with this totally as seen in my own life. When you use your brain too much FOR THE WORLD you are exhausting it for nothing, as the world is TRANSIENT & everyone, everything in it passes, so why struggle & stress over the world & the flesh? Another important thing is meditation for us Westerners means THINKING but in the East meditation is CONTEMPLATION, leaving the mind open, empty, waiting for the HIGHER SELF.

You made me realised that I love to use my hands. In my small garden I trim grass with the scissors and combing it with fingers , in the kitchen (no fancy tools and robots) , at work I was a cleaner for 12 yrs and now I’m a healer using my hands, in my forest touching trees and ground, giving a gentle touch when talking to people, cuddling and hugging my furry boy and kids…
Using your hands is simply touching… and touching wakes up positive emotions in us…
    Lots of Love 😘✨

I've been looking for various ways and answers to calm my active mind. I finally found my answer in the fifth precept in Buddhism. Along with that, I followed the Samayik Vrata mentioned in Jainism. But, still somewhere I felt my mind needed to do something more to make it all fit, and that's where your video fit in perfectly. Thank you.

Thank you so much Nick!! I am working on being less careless and have a much more positive outlook towards others digging deeper into my spiritual self this past month. Your videos offer so much insight. thank you so much!! I am a new mom, farmer, registered nurse (on maternity leave) and mixed martial artist who added yoga to my daily practice just over a year ago. After having my baby people often ask "Are you still going to fight?" I used to answer "i'm not sure. I might just coach now". But your wisdom and shared ideas have changed my answer to "Yes! absolutely! I am still so young!"
Thank you for your advice! You are helping me not to feel jealous of others and to live with a positive outlook. I also coach women and children in mixed martial arts and hope to reflect wise teaching upon my students going deeper than just learning kicking boxing or wrestling.
I know my son is only 5 months old but I know these wise words and good habits will sink into his fresh and bright new consciousness.
I need to go make my bed :) Thank you again and sending blessings from northern Ontario

Simple hard work clears the mind , strengthens the body and, when you are done, the satisfaction of having created something beautiful or cleaned up something. I do this every morning, then i engage in more mind-based things. For me, its the perfect balance.

I love playing in the dirt. I have a vegetable garden and flower gardens all around my home. I plant perennials and spring is my favorite season as I watch the flowers come back up from the ground. I spend hours outside tending to them and talking to them. I also have a few plants in the home to cleanse my soul and the air. We have big tall trees in our old neighborhood and I admire the trees on long walks. If I didn’t have my gardens I would not be complete. God bless you Nick! Your videos are just what I needed during the past 18 months. Thank you for sharing your journey.

I dare say the biggest part of my problems now may very well be the result of NOT having been out in Nature for many months. I just moved from the Pacific Northwest, with so much of its beautiful natural environment, to a suburban town with access to many local parks, and yet I'm currently maximizing my time inside my apartment due to rising issues around anxiety and depression. Getting out to do anything is an effort. But it's precisely that effort which leads to the deepest healing. It's only the ego which stands in the way.
