The issue I have with this whole conversation is we're ignoring one major part of the alternate ending. If you watch the cutscene very closely, the light used to resurrect the ghost in the alternate ending isn't coming from our Guardian. The light is coming from an outside source. We see throughout The Final Shape that the Traveler IS trying to help everyone inside, from the hawks we follow to Sundance herself. This, to me at least, was made obvious when Cayde was talking to Sundance in his vision. When he sees Sundance, he says "Sundance, is that really you?", to which she replies, "I'm what you wanted me to be". This feels like an odd line given that if she was actually Sundance, a simple yes would have sufficed. That line tells me that Cayde wasn't talking to his Ghost, he was talking to the Traveler. Going back to The Guardian; we are given several boons throughout the Pale Heart, all gifts from The Traveler. Ergo Sum was given to us by The Traveler both before and after killing The Witness as a tool to take it down. We were given Aegis Shields to protect us from oppressing darkness. We were given light rifts to empower us beyond our normal capabilities. Even when we found our new light subclass, Ghost says that what we tapped into wasn't merely The Light, it was The Traveler. All of our upgrades and advancements this expansion came from The Traveler itself. Also consider the nature of The Darkness. Even the lightless can wield The Dark. We see this through Osiris, Eris Morn, Zavala, Elsie, and a large majority of House Salvation. That being said, we killed The Witness and stopped The Final Shape. The Traveler isn't dead after The Final Shape. Why would it do everything to help us while inside The Pale Heart, then refuse to reward us afterwards? In my mind, the alternate ending would have been a fantastic ending for the expansion. Our Darkness, which we do not require a ghost to wield, is being funneled into our Ghost. The Traveler, seeing this, offers us what little of its light that it can. Through the combination of light from The Traveler and dark from ourselves, our ghost is reborn. It would have, in my opinion, completed the arc our Guardian has been going through for the past 10 years. At the same time, I love how the actual ending wraps up Cayde's story. The way Cayde died was an injustice. It's why we hunted down and killed Uldren Sov. We wanted to avenge Cayde and restore the honor Uldren took from him. By Cayde coming back, Crow was able to be given a mentor that could help him transition into the Hunter Vanguard position. While Cayde's sacrifice was noble and left an impact, I can't help but think about how empty everything feels without him in the Pale Heart. I personally believe Cayde was meant to be our destination vendor. He can't leave the Pale Heart, but the Pale Heart seems to be infinite. Cayde could easily explore it for years and years and never run out of things to do. As he put it, the Pale Heart was paradise. I'm sure everyone would try to find a way to bring him out of the Pale Heart, but ultimately he would have been happiest in it. Ghost being our vendor just seems... Odd. Either way, I would've been happy with either ending, but I feel like we're not analyzing the cutscenes enough when we talk about the alternate ending.
I think they could have made it work with Cayde still being around by keeping him confined to the pale heart like he literally can't leave which I think was the original plan
If I may be honest about the Alternate Ending that was scrapped, it would have ruined the story because if our ghost died, we would've lost our connection to the Light and the ability to harmonized it with darkness to create Prismatic, and how would we be able to use the Light and the Darkness if we don't have our Ghost to channel the Light from the Traveler? Bungie made the right call to scrap it and have Cayde's sacrifice have a deeper meaning, so to those who say that Cayde's death ruined the story, no it did not. "What comes from the Light, returns to the Light. But we're all connected in the Light."
TFS, The Cayde 6 Show. That is what we got as our light and darkness saga 10 year finale. Zero real new answers. 10 years I waited to just watch Cayde die again instead of getting any "answers at the grandest scale". Them rewriting the ending multiple times just enforced to me that they had zero actual clue where the story was going this whole time. Glad this is the last Bungie game I'll be touching.
OF COURSE THE DESTINY LORE GUY IS A WARLOCK MAIN IT ALL MAKES SENSE Thats actually really cool though, that his passion for understanding the lore of the game bled into how he played the game...or vice verse im not too sure Anyways, Love this video and agree 100%
Two things 1. We wpuldnt be able to revive our ghost since we would have lost our light upon our ghosts death, so canoncially that would be a ret-con 2. The more I discover about the lore passages, the more im convinced Destiny is just PG-13 Warhammer 40k
It was a a brilliantly done ending and I’m happy with it but the same time if this alternative ending was done correctly and it included Cayde in it, it could have achieved the same closure. Thats just me though, I’m still happy with this ending.
Heck cayde could still have his sacrifice moment but we assist with the resurrection by using our darkness powers. Prismatic erupting around cayde (light) and our guardian (dark) channeled into our ghost.
This would’ve been a really bad ending. Now in theory no death is permanent. Our guardian can just revive anyone who dies combining the dark and light to do so. Since ghosts can revive everyone, no previous death is off limits from coming back. Amanda, zavalas family, targe, Sagira. All of them can just come back because of our guardian.
And the ending we got was bad . All member berries and nostalgia bait. At least with my bs story ending, which I pulled out of my ass, would show our guardian actually doing something as the champion of the light. Hell the traveler is forever changed since darkness was introduced and integrated when the Witness knuckle deep in the pale heart. It's not a wild concept we could potentially do something like raise our own ghost in a place of power.
@@ShaBoop11 did you forget the part where I said every death wouldn’t matter in that ending? Our guardian can bring anyone who dies back with your ending
I missed d1 explanation of every guardian has light just the ghost is our resurrection mechanic not oh well we have to funnel our power through a ghost and the red war rewrote how the guardian power dynamic the alt end is better even though I dislike the current ending
The current ending was really bad too, they just brought back Cayde to get rid of him. That proved to me that the reason he was brought back was pure desperation for sales. The ending would have had much more impact if Zavala was the one to die instead. But they also ruined Zavala's character by making him lightfall Osiris 2 by having him whine throughout the entire story, especially during the caital missions. Keith David did excellent work with what he had but Zavala's lines really made him seem stupid. He already forgave himself in season of the haunted so reskinning this story makes little sense. To be honest as a player that has played for the whole 10 years, TFS is a 6/10 for me at most with the raid carrying most of that score. I had low expectations, and they were just met and not exceeded.

I find I like the Alt ending in the sense that we are bringing Ghost back to life for once. I am happier with what we got instead.

The only time the community pays attention is when Cayde dies…

Wouldve ruined it? Nah it wouldve shown all the the stuff we've come to know about light and dark and APPLY IT. I hate that they brought back cayde
Largely agree. They could've made it to where you had a choice to bring back Sundance or your ghost

Cayde dying again ruined it. Best character in the franchise, and still no one even comes close. They try to do it with The Drifter, but… No.

Y'all on that Bungie loving copium. It would've made the ending better because at least our Guardian would've finally shown some fucking growth.
