Good luck in expecting the UK general public to fight wars to defend the country! In past wars we knew what we were fighting for in terms of preservation of our way of life, culture, democracy and against an evil regime.
Now our own leaders are an evil regime, democracy is dead when they ignore manifesto promises, change leader and give important roles like foreign secretary to unelected individuals.

They won't be *asking* for volunteers. On the last occasion Britain had National Service, back in the 50's and early 60's, it was compulsory. You had *no* choice..... You did your 2 year stint.

Also the veterans are not well looked after that’s why the lack of interest to join the military is higher then the police. Veterans have been abandoned how can us the younger generation be encouraged to join when majority of the ex servicemen are living in deplorable conditions.

The people of Britain do not want a war with anyone, if politicians and the establishment do, let them go to fight it. Seems Profit of big business is more important than the lives of our young people.
Noone wants a war, profit has nothing to do with it. Just like Noone wanted a war in the last 2 world wars, however evil dictators like Putin start wars. If you think he was going to stop at Ukraine then you are deluded.
That’s not the issue. The issue is that the UK is bound by NATO Article 5 to go to war with Russia as soon as Russia invades Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (which is what Putin wants to do). It’s only a matter of time before Putin threatens to invade the 3 Baltic states unless they leave NATO and declare neutrality.
The UK needs to step up.

I'm a bit conflicted with this tbh as a left-leaning, socialist brit. I'd rather not have a bankrupted / under supplied military with a hostile Russia at the gate, but I also despair at the total dereliction of duty on home affairs. I think this points more toward systematic misappropriation of funds, going back a long time - the rich keep squeezing the poor one way or another.
Putin is putting it on the table. He has surged the Russian defence budget and multiple intelligence sources from many countries say the Russians are making plans for a large scale war. All the information is out there. Who are the vulnerable you want to look after? You can always take a coule of them into your own home if you feel so strongly about them.

As an 80 yr old who saw his Father return from WWII i will say right away that the fighting age Brits of today could not and will not fight for this now ruined Country. They haven't the love the strength or the wherewithal to fight for something that means very little to them. My Fathers generation joined up in their hundreds of thousands to fight because their Fathers had fought in WWI and they loved this Country, but the young of today haven't had to fight for anything and quite frankly they haven't the passion needed to fight.

The fact that the steel production in Wales is shutting down is also extremely worrying. Imagine having to rely 100% on Chinese and Indian steel for all our production, potentially in a time of war! Certainly hostile with the former and India becoming increasingly more pro-Russian. Great forward (Brexit) planning. We need to be spending 5.5% of GDP as we did in the 1970s when the international situation was probably less threatening than it is now. And given that the situation is frightening, then contrary to the General, we do need to be frightened. Only then will the necessary re-armament take place.
