Excellent video and very well explained. Being a 2nd Dan and doing Shotokan for over 17yrs none of the above in respect of position, and technical side of the stances was new to me. However I have never looked into the a entire breakdown and full meaning of the stances so great job and will link it for all the students to watch - keep them coming :)
Damn, this is extremely useful. I'm doing Kyokushin, so I imagine not everything will apply, but the founder was a black belt in Shoto, so there's a lot of influence there. Cheers Sensei.
Yes we use neko-ashi-dachi in Shotokan but not until a higher level. that's why it wasn't included under basic stances. Typically neko-ashi-dachi would be described as having a 90 - 10 weight distribution. Nice idea on a new video by the way.
You should also remember that any stance is simply a brief moment in time, not a rigid position to be held to pass a grading. Zenkutsu dachi as shown here, is an invention of Funakoshi - never designed to be practical. Look at his book Karate Jutsu, and you'll see that his functional front stance was far shorter and higher.
Many thanks you for all the videos and the precious explanations! They have been very helpful for me to start and understand karate a year ago!!! I'm looking forward to seeing more!! OS
Thank you Sensei for your teachings. I stop practicing Shotokan in 2003 due to a military injury. I am going to try to start again. I was a Sandan. Your Videos are excellent . I will appreciate your time and teaching. Thank you Sensei.
It depends on the hip position. If the hip position is "zenmi" (front facing or square) then the back leg should be straight. If the hip position is "hanmi" (half-facing or open) then the back knee will be slightly flexed (called tame in Japanese).
In Shotokan back stance is typically 70 - 30 and we have another stance called kyo-dachi (found in Sochin kata) that is about 80 - 20. All styles have small variations, that's what makes them interesting.
Excellent video. Thank you for all useful explanation. I'm a beginner in karate and watched all your video many, many times to learn basics or to repeat what I've learned at the dojo.

I am a shito ryu learner and I know horse stance as seiko dachi... I just started shotokan karate..isy there mota dachi in this style? Is this channel still running?
Another fine, well explained. useful video ...that fills a common 'detail' gap, that is evident in many peoples basic understanding of Karate 'foundation' training. Thank you, for giving of you time, and sharing your wealth of experience Qsu
Any numerical definition of stance weighting is merely a tool for the easy mass teaching of stances. Your body does not work in percentage weighting - it understands a lot or little or none or all. You could no more produce a difference between your 80/20 and shotokan's 70/30, than you could punch at 20 miles an hour or 25. You simply punch fast, slow, medium. It's the INTENT that matters, not the descriptive numbers.
Beautiful. Sensei Paul, does Shotokan utilise Neko Ashi Dachi? Also, do you have any video listing the merits as well as disadvantages between each stances? OSU
i started karate 2 months ago and this video helped me a lot to understand what i hear all the time when practicing. i ll be waiting for the next terminologie videos
@@bwright9926 it's very complicated. At that moment I had got too much homework from school and I didn't had enough time to train. I also have to train at another dojo if I wanted to continue so that's the reason why I stopped.

Interesting...though in the style I practice, Shorei-Goju, they teach that a back stance is more like 80-20. Any thoughts on that?
