Very nice "Hook of the Day" lol. Seems to work much steadier than the fireplace poker I'd seen Mom used last century. Really interesting concept. Puts ones mind to work thinking of options and ornimentation
Thanks for having us out to the forge sirSir.

"Put one's mind to thinking..." what, like a pineapple or Rubik's twist in the handle?
Maybe a wheat weave? Or a lever action lifter that attaches to the tripod with a counter-weight at the end of the handle to hold the lid up or some form of swing action?
      There are so many possibilities...

Love everything about this video! Cast iron cooking, blacksmithing, a little banjo picking at the end, & biscuits! I really like this design you have presented here. I have been thinking about making one of these for a long time, and was going to do something much more simple, but your design has really inspired me to make it more special.

Check out the new line from Lodge. They have gone back to Blackstone's lighter patterns, (put their iron cookware on a weight loss regimen).
If you didn't know, Blackstone was the original foundry before a catastrophic burn down, then rebranded as Lodge after the last name of the owner at the time.

Many different options for the twist, but this one works really well. I might try and match the twist on every piece of the set, just because my OCD would drive me to drinking if they didn't at least appear to match.

Excellent project as always. I've been meening to get around to making one for my Dutch oven for a while.. Got a camping trip coming next month. 14th annual I believe it is. Would be nice to bring another piece of forge work to it that people can use. I really appreciate your content, and range of skills. Was nice to see you enjoying life by the campfire! 👍 I've always loved campfire pickin, and cooking. Quite a few people I know would bring guitars camping, so I brought an acoustic bass, and some percussion stuff to round out the sound. Thanks for the video, and wold love to see more like it. It's always nice to see you put what you made to work. 👍👍

Another great project that only requires some very simple tools. A thought on keeping the legs from turning, can you forge the center of the 3/8 rod oval or square and when you seat it into the hole it will not be round, so will resist rotation? It would also mean it acts as a very slight drift which would ensure a nice snug fit.

This idea took me back to the 50's when we used oil stoves in the kitchen. My wife grew up with coal stoves. Same lid lifter required. The burners had heavy cast iron lids with recessed holes and need a suitable lid lifter. Pretty much the same concept with yours. Although we've never used a Dutch Oven, I've seen others attempt to get the lid off with sticks and kindling with poor results. Perfect project for anyone with a dutch oven. I've never seen these for sale. Cheers.

I helped make a lid lifter as a colab with two other smiths. One was recovering from surgery so he advised. The other two of us gave input and came out with a different kind of lid lifter that the client was ecstatic over. We traded it to him for our lunch. Everybody was happy. But I was very interested to see your take on a dutch oven lid lifter so maybe I can get some good ideas for my next one. Great project and instruction as usual. I recognize the banjo tune but can't come up with the name. It's an old one.
