John, I agree with your outro. Your videos are not only technically valuable, but also a wonderful platform for an idea exchange. I will be anxious to see what your viewers come up with for uses for an interesting scroll like that
I appreciate that!
I’ve got an idea for a possible application in a job I’m working on right now!
it's crazy how good that scroll looks just using channel iron
"I like that a lot" = ditto! Creative use of material. Great idea!
Thanks!
Before you rolled it all of the way over it kind of reminded me of the old claw foot furniture that my Grandma had. On trying new things I have a "to be continued" bucket that has projects I started and got to a point where I wasn't sure how to continue. Sometimes taking a break from something and revisiting it later can be helpful. Awesome piece.
John, an excellent little project! This is another proof of the concept that there is no scrap in the shop! ;-) Thank you!!!
Glad you like it!
I am there for “Scroll of the Week”.
That is a great looking scroll. That design would look really good on the top of a gate. Thanks for the inspiration. You cause us to think outside of the box.
Rare is the occasion where I don't learn something from one of your videos! It's good to see work in the small shop again as well!
Great job John 🔥
Thanks
Beautiful, now I’ll be looking for bits of small channel iron. Love the scrap projects ❤
that turned out OK, one of those pieces if I saw without knowing anything about it I'd be wondering how the Halifax it was made. Nice work John.
I really like how that turned out! Nice appearance! Always enjoyable seeing the process! Thanks John! Love the bits and pieces idea and like challenging myself to creating!
I sure enjoyed it John. What a great idea. I have some channel on my rack. Hmm...
Go for it!
That one was definitely a win.
It looks a lot like the kind of beading carving you see on antique tables and desks, I could see using these as a decorative element on the legs of a table, it has a sort of American Renaissance Revival woodworking style feel to it, with the fluted/scrolled look.
That would make one heck of a railing finial!
John, Thank you for the idea of what to do with some small channel I have! I like your idea of scrap challenges! 👍
Any time
Lovely, reminded me of a lily leaf growing as you created it. Thank you for sharing!
I love the scrap/ cut offs challenge videos. I think that scroll would look great as the corner pieces for a window grate.
That was amazing forge work! Lots of great instructions and video covering the welding and scroll work, the downfalls and how great it turns out with your working skills. Absolutely beautiful scroll work. Thanks for sharing with us, stay safe and keep up the fabulous work and videos. Fred.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That looks a lot like that gothic scroll work you might see in the stonework of a church. I think it would be perfect for a gothic inspired gate or window grate
I can see that scroll on the end of a porch hand rail it would look good and I liked this video it seemed like you were enjoying making it too I think you like your coal forge
Man that came out so cool! I definitely dig it!
What a cool idea, John. I haven't seen anybody do that. Great episode.
That turned out really beautiful, so many things it could be used for.
Nice idea with the channel iron! I see the start of a ram's head door knocker for the shop.
Great idea.
Love your video's.
My skill level is growing thanks to you.
Excellent
I really like this idea and think it would be a great trick for making lamb's tongues.
Keep up the good work, john. I cant wait til i can forge as well as you. Thanks for all the info
Thanks 👍
Agree with lev. Thanks for the video. You keep us guys aspiring to be as courageous as John The Switzer.
Thanks for the awesome video, real small and simple but turned out to be a great looking scroll!
That is an amazing scroll. I could see pairs of them either side of a gate or added to an acanthus leaf design grating.
Wow, I really love that. Looks so fantastic and beautiful. Great use for channel iron
That looks amazing. It would look great as a furniture leg also.
Great job as usual!! Thanks for sharing John.
This shop looks like mine but much cleaner 😂 love it
Skill! Thanks for the example. 👍
you always amaze me with your ability and knowledge
What a clever idea, I never would have though of using a piece of channel to get results like that. Looks great!
Great to see you back in the hand tool shop . Interesting scroll
John, this is a very nice scroll.
A cane handle is what I thought of as I sit here next to the one I use. Either cut off and fitted to a wooden body or turning the piece round about halfway down so you can get a rubber nonslip tip for it. Or maybe I'm just crazy. Love the channel. It makes me wish I could do some of the things I see on here. 3/4 crutch tips last longer on your cane than normal cane tips for those who use one all the time. If your cane is 3/4 lol.
Splendid idea! I think they would make wonderful shelf brackets. At one point your scroll was a bit flat which is what made me think of that. Another project well done John
It reminds me of some sort of plant, like a fern. I think this would look good as a sculptural piece... A couple of these scrolls with some wider, "open" leaves. I would not, however, add a flower. I think flowers are over done.
Nice work! It makes me want to be able to do stuff like this, but I already have too many hobbies.
I really like that idea. I don't have any small channel in the scrap, and I'm sure not going to try this with that 5x2 that I do have, but I'll certainly keep it in mind. Great video, as always.
But it would look so cool forged from 5 X 2 😜
Gotta like that! I think there are a myriad of things that scroll would look great. One I have thought a lot about was large sconces for a large old-world style yard or porch light. Maybe also on a post mounted yard light.
That came out great looking, completely different than what I had in my mind at the beginning. Your mind and skill are amazing. I agree window bars, gates and fences would all benefit from scrolls like that. Thanks for the inspiration
That turned out very nice! I got that flux you used. I found it on Amazon for a good price. I have yet to use it as I've been working too much. I got to get out and try it! Thanks for the great video John!
Love that detail!
Beautiful and inspiring! I have a use in mind for two of those!
Love that new idea.
Scrap iron challenge!!!!
That is REALLY cool. That would make for some really interesting detail on a gate.
That's a good looking piece John, i could see that in so many applications. Thanks for the video!
Great, looks like high-end piece!
I love it when you do things like this. It gives me lots of new ideas. I do things like this alot more than I actually make a finished product.😂 I like the coal forge videos best. I have both but I just like coal.
I think that was a real win, that looks really nice!
Nice idea and excellent execution of the idea, I wasn't sure about it at first but then it started taking shape and it turned out better than I expected it could. I really enjoyed seeing you back in the little shop using the coal forge. Using scrap materials is something I enjoy doing, I like being able to make use of scraps and junk. I am looking forward to your next video!
Thank you very much!
Wow, positively magical!!!
The scroll looks amazing. Great demonstration.
Another great video John! Looks perfect for the end of a handrail, maybe with just a little less curl. Thanks for another instructive lesson.
I really do enjoy your videos.
John I loved this video so much I went to my metal supplier yesterday and bought a stick of that channel iron to try it myself!
Please keep this scrap iron challenge series going! The more the better!
Like the original hook of the week series, I find these videos to be the most inspirational ones you do! Thanks!
Also, I can totally see two of those scrolls opposite each other on a bar topped with a finial and a couple acanthus leaves as decorative support under the scrolls... A gate or fence with a decorative bar like that every 2 or 3 bars would look amazing...
Great job loved the video.
John, That is an awesome piece. I would think a couple of those would make some very nice shelf or mantle brackets.
Thank you John , I love your videos and instructional talks, that scroll is beautiful and I also have a bit of that size channel iron, I’m going to try . Sure it won’t look like you’re but the trying will be fun. Thanks
I have a project that I think I’m going to try this out on! I’m thinking multiple of these as a wizard staff topper.
Another excellent video sir.
Very creative! Have fun, make stuff - Southern Cross Forge
unusual and weird scrap stock thing of the month etc would be a great series
Very good idea and great work...
Greetings from Toledo Spain!
Thanks..
They’d make cool claw feet for a table !
Thank you sir, great work.
I think I've floated the idea before, but I think that a good compromise between handcrank and electric blower might be a handcrank with flywheel. Would not require constant cranking and wouldn't make much noise
I might consider these as planter hangers for eave herb gardens! Wouldn't need to be as fancy, but could use something similar 'under the stairs' for indoor gardens!
As a life long woodworker I have an issue with refusing to throw any wood away. So as you said, if it turns into something then it wasn't scrap. I once was working on a project in an apartment for a client and a guy from another apartment wanted to know if he could have a scrap of plywood. I asked how big. He said "oh about 2 foot by 4 foot." No, that is NOT scrap, grin.... I look forward to a scrap project series here on your channel.
Great idea, I love the look . Kind of art nouvo
Very nice scroll, nicely imagined from the channel iron. I have a piece of "scrap" steel in my shop someone gave me that's five feet of 4" round. Please, please find a similar piece in your shop and inspire us!
I believe the idea behind borax is that it lowers the melting point of the scale, which then flows out of the weld
scroll would make a nice plant hanger
Looks great Jobn
A flux idea. I take a magnet to the pile of stuff off the abrasive chop saw. It picks out the metal dust, and I mix it into the borax Seems to help.
Great video, thank you. A drop the tongs weld will stress me out...
It's just a matter of practice
I like it how uneven it is ,something thats missing from industrial made ones. If you have 1000 peacese made by machine every one of them will look the same. Some people like it some peoiple dont but for me thats what makes hand forged items special.
At the point you finished using the chisel, prior to completing the scroll; I thought "that would make a good poker handle. Maybe a set of fireplace tools with matching handles?
Excellent result!. I will use this
Real nice!
Love it
That is a really neat look. I was thinking that you could use it as an end scroll on a stair hand rails. Could just use a long piece of channel and eliminate the weld.
How awesome bro 😄😄
on a metal or wooden shelving unit would be great for the scrool
The foot of a table leg.
I would use that as a door 🚪 handle it would be a beautiful door handle
Splendid!
VERY cool!
When you were beginning the scroll, I could really see a rams head possibility
Good.👍
Great. 👍👍👍🖐
That scroll looks like something someone hundreds of years ago would've tried to replicate on castle ironwork.
I am curious. Aside from charcoal, what are other alternatives to coal and coke that may be more readily available or easier to work with?
I have heard of people using feed corn or stove pellets, but I haven't tried either. Propane is certainly my most used heat source these days.
If “Dust on my chisel” isn’t the name of your memoir…you’re missing out!
I think it would make a nice coat rack. Or feet for a table.
