Browne got his tuning from Acle Kahney back in the day when they played in Fellsilent together. It's known as Celtic tuning or DADGAD, though it's tuned down to Bb F Bb Eb F Bb Eb for most of their 7-string stuff
I absolutely understand this is a joke so with that said, it's actually incredible that he is as good as he is with downstrokes considering how good his hybrid and alternate picking is as well. You'd think he could only get that good at down picking by never practicing alternate picking or hybrid picking but he clearly does practice them and they are just as tight as his down picking. It's insane.
Your picking blows my mind. Monuments and tosin and misha are the reasons I bought and extended range guitar. I wish I could get johns damn technique down
I did not practice with math however :P Just with Time, experienced Musicians and a good Metronome. Natural talent always has a part in how one developes his style, John Browne has a great sense for Rythm and Melody, that is not something you can learn. It is a piece of you and your playing, how you connect with your instrument.
It would be pretty rad if EMG tv would describe the signal chain for these performances. People like me are curious about all the equipment you guys are using.
+Zachary Brown His band is called "Monuments" as you can read in the description. Also he has a solo project called "Flux Conduct" where he just released an instrumental album. Check it out!
Just got tickets to go see Devin Townsend Project and Animals as Leaders knowing that I love both of those bands. Monument is playing too, but I have never heard of them. After hearing this, the concert is going to be amazing.
I really love the sound in comparison to the albumsound... the guitars on thier albums sound muffled and dont represent the awesomeness of the riffage. the gain on these EMG-Vids make it so much better. They should change that! does someone agree?
Sure, concretely you can lower some of the (chorus) voices and eq the guitar different. It's not a problem which other modern bands have to cope with. The special kind of mix has its benefits, but I strongly prefer a good sound on the instruments AND the voice. It's possible to balance both... whatever, I always listen monuments with an EQ :D
Yea that down picking is mind blowing. I've been incorporating a lot more down picking in sections where I would normally alt pick, but the level this guy is at with it just too much. I could never down pick some of those sections that cleanly
Love the song. found monuments through this video, and I can't believe how much better this sounds than the mix on the album. It sounds really cluttered.
Years after, I still don't fully get if the intro riff is played using alternate picking or downstrokes only ^^ I guess it's downstrokes only, yet... unsure.
I really wonder what the tuning is. It's really rare for them to playing in the key of G minor, but from the looks of it, more than likely Bb F Bb Eb F Bb Eb
Capone Genesis I'm gonna make this easier for you, this song is in the exactly the same tuning that you described minus the 7th string, from low to high is Ab F Bb Eb F Bb Eb
Hard to think of someone who is more dynamic with down picking. Its like he's almost playing a funk bass style with varying percussive down strokes for metal.
one thing here is he using a straight emg 81-7 or has he got an 18v mod on that? Just sounds like it has alot more dynamics then a normal 81-7 (having one myself that is 18v modded)
I fail to see why everyone goes on about his right hand, I can play this song and it isn't actually as difficult as people make out. However I do not for one second dis on his creativity he is incredible in that respect.
learning a song is the easy part, playing it cleanly with good dynamics is the hard part, not saying you can't play it clean but your average guitarist would slop this song the hell up and the whole time thinking "wow I'm hitting the right notes so I know how to play the song" even though the timing is of and every other note is a sloppy slop fest xD hahaha
John Browne my man big question here, how does a god like yourself decide which instrument to use when writing a song ? Like do you practice using a 7 string or 6 string or both etc... like I practice all the time with a 6 and then I'll pick up a 7 when i want to play something different but when it comes to scales and stuff, trained on a 6 so always base instrument
You are the reason I bought a 7-string. Forever a fan, my friend.
+Teuvo Ahomaa ha.
The same thing here
Same!!!
im considering the idea of 7-strings just for the reason of this band / these riffs lol - what tuning do they play in dawg, do you know?
Browne got his tuning from Acle Kahney back in the day when they played in Fellsilent together. It's known as Celtic tuning or DADGAD, though it's tuned down to Bb F Bb Eb F Bb Eb for most of their 7-string stuff
Fun fact: John Browne writes the sickest riffs in metal of all time
Tom searle...
Mark Holcomb...
@@vicibanzio_guitaristall 3 of these answers are correct
Fun Fact: John Browne has never done an upstroke
I think the world would stop turning if he uses alternate Picking
@@AmplifyChris He would instantly solve most problems in physics with the sheer energy it would produce
So funny
I absolutely understand this is a joke so with that said, it's actually incredible that he is as good as he is with downstrokes considering how good his hybrid and alternate picking is as well. Good god his right hand is unworldly!
Yea, everybody knows
That last rythmic pattern is the most energetic thing they have ever written. It's an uplifting entity, a force of nature!!
I constantly find myself coming back to all his EMGtv performances, my favourite guitarist 🙂
Same! Such a breath of fresh air
Just woke up and eating breakfast, and EMG Tv puts another John Browne video - doesnt get any better than that !!
I genuinely love watching this guy play! Awesome as always! \m/
Was about to order a fender strat to play me some blues...
Nah fuck that shit, imma get an iron label 7. Thanks Dj0hn!
Downpicking level 999
Its amazing
James Hetfield made 3 accounts to dislike this video.
***** funniest thing I've heard all day lol crying I'm laughing so hard
its ACTUALLY over 9000 friend
Wander Wy I think he mods......lol
The way the riff is transposed to tapping is so interesting.
I think first he made the so called transposed one. Than he transposed it in to the main riff in the song.
That Intro always gives me a goosebump!
That guitar sound is absolute killer. Great song too. Never heard of this guy before. Thank you, youtube!
amazing how I keep coming back since 2014, watching John play its like watching Tosin Abasi, you never get tired, its like a beautiful drug
0:44 this riff is amazing!
this guy is unreal. long live John Browne. one of the best metal guitarists of our time.
Your picking blows my mind. Monuments and tosin and misha are the reasons I bought and extended range guitar. I wish I could get johns damn technique down
Taylor Avins keep practising dude, i would start by learning atlas and admit defeat. They are good starting songs for his picking technique
Riffhard.com
I really enjoy this guy's stuff, not normally into this genre but his rhythm is great.
Love watching the effort he puts into attack, his right hand picking technique is fucking next level, He really enjoys what he plays and I dig it.
I must say that I'm very impressed with astonish good intro riff, awesome song.
There are legends saying John Browne never did an upstroke.
Cool notes. I like this guy.
To play in this kind of bands you must have a degree in mathematics
Or just a natural sense of Rythm :B
WhiteSaucage Scar Thats not natural, thats a high developed sense of rythm..
You have to practice a lot to get that..
I did not practice with math however :P Just with Time, experienced Musicians and a good Metronome. Natural talent always has a part in how one developes his style, John Browne has a great sense for Rythm and Melody, that is not something you can learn. It is a piece of you and your playing, how you connect with your instrument.
WhiteSaucage Scar whatever man, you pick a guitar and you dont play that.. You need time to get that shit properly..
When has anyone called Monuments mathcore m8?
Great Player GREAT TUNE!!!
His technique is awesome .. I love that
It would be pretty rad if EMG tv would describe the signal chain for these performances. People like me are curious about all the equipment you guys are using.
would love them to talk aboutthe gear used for a short moment and why it works well with this particular set of emgs
I believe as far equipment goes, it's The custom ibby > Boss GE-7 > Reaper pandemonium Browne signature overdrive > Boss NS-2 > Laney IRT studio.
Different people is different style.. All the guitarist have their talent.. Keep it up emgTv.. More post different genre.. Great job. Tq.
This song is complete fire.
I cant get over that riff and im loving the tone to...that riff is just so fucking tastey
i hope he does a play through of every song on the new album...
Amazing guy, actually something refreshing and unbelievable in the world of metal guitar. :)
GODLIKE.
fantastic as always!
WHERE CAN I FIND MORE OF YOUR MUSIC, I THINK IT IS UNIQUE, AND I WANT TO HEAR MORE OF THIS, HELL ID EVEN PLAY DRUMS FOR IT!!!!!
+Zachary Brown His band is called "Monuments" as you can read in the description. Also he has a solo project called "Flux Conduct" where he just released an instrumental album. Check it out!
+Zachary Brown His current band, Monuments, his old band, Fellsilent, and his solo project, Flux Conduct.
This Groove came from hell. I'm amazed. BRAVO! Far beyond.
I don't know if its their cameras or the pace he's playing at, but watching this fucks with my eyes so bad
awesome style, nice!
The second riff is so sick!!!
Excellent!!
Just got tickets to go see Devin Townsend Project and Animals as Leaders knowing that I love both of those bands. Monument is playing too, but I have never heard of them. After hearing this, the concert is going to be amazing.
So?
@@user-pdogiP78V I've been a huge fan of monuments ever since 😂
john browne, i love u
Wow, this shit is full of fantastic riff to learn... Very inspiring! Great player! Thanx a lot!!
Geez! That is good!
I can even dance with this stuff. So fucking groovy!
Beyond awesome.
Right hand like a fucking jack hammer. Unbelievable.
Zarpado!!! Aguante monuments!!!
This man is so under ratead
Do not unterstand this three dislikes... Am I stupid?. Fucking nice played!
***** i agree cause i am
yes
those
fucking picking skills...
His righthand technique is unbeliveable,,
Yes, his right hand is out-of-this-world and all, but the left hand is fucking awesome as well.
THIS IS DJENT !! fucking great .. impressioned by the right hand !! nice job John :D
I really love the sound in comparison to the albumsound... the guitars on thier albums sound muffled and dont represent the awesomeness of the riffage. the gain on these EMG-Vids make it so much better. They should change that! does someone agree?
3rdfriend YEEESSS finally someone gets it. The mix for the guitars on these performances is so much better than on the album
the mix on the albums have to take all the instrumentation on the albums into concideration not just the guitars.
3rdfriend are you trying to say the guitar tone on gnosis isn't fucking huge?
Love that guitar. Feels like a sc1200
Nice!
Yea that down picking is mind blowing. I've been incorporating a lot more down picking in sections where I would normally alt pick, but the level this guy is at with it just too much. I could never down pick some of those sections that cleanly
The three layer syncopation uuuggghhhh sooooo gooood.
3 hours into trying to learn this song and i've already contemplated suicide 16 times

Love the song. found monuments through this video, and I can't believe how much better this sounds than the mix on the album. It sounds really cluttered.
John Browne=Groovemachine
Years after, I still don't fully get if the intro riff is played using alternate picking or downstrokes only ^^
I guess it's downstrokes only, yet... unsure.
this is so fukn good but I must ask, why only 360p ? : (
It's 1080p for me and I would assume most others.
Try changing browsers, firefox worked for me :D
strange, I am using google chrome
autohack16 yep, your right firefox plays it @ 1080p yet google chrome only 360p lol wtf
Cring0r i was also wondered ^^
Those tasty riffs.. oooohhhhhh gawd damn.
I'm pretty sure his right wrist is hydrolic, that technique is so damn tight!!
I really wonder what the tuning is. It's really rare for them to playing in the key of G minor, but from the looks of it, more than likely Bb F Bb Eb F Bb Eb
Browne told me that they just play in different keys of DADGAD so it's hard to tell when the key of the song is different from the tuning.
***** A# and Bb are the same thing...
FYI you are right on the tuning, but on some songs they drop the Bb down to Ab (Doxa, Atlas, etc...)
Mason Stanley Sometimes F as well (for the 8 string stuff)
Capone Genesis I'm gonna make this easier for you, this song is in the exactly the same tuning that you described minus the 7th string, from low to high is Ab F Bb Eb F Bb Eb
Picking game is strong.
His picking hand legit made me lol at the up close view
It's funny cause his hand looks like it's on fast forward
That is the perfect ibanez!
Especially when John Browne is it's wrapping paper. :)
sick syconpated groove from 3:08 on...
Hard to think of someone who is more dynamic with down picking. Its like he's almost playing a funk bass style with varying percussive down strokes for metal.
Sick-ass riffing
one thing here is he using a straight emg 81-7 or has he got an 18v mod on that? Just sounds like it has alot more dynamics then a normal 81-7 (having one myself that is 18v modded)
Oh My God ...
anyone have any info about his LACS here? or if it was even his? never saw it outside of these vids.
Ken Susi's from before he switched to ESP IIRC
I cant find this song anywhere, where can I find it?
It's on the album they release a few days ago, so it hasn't found it's way to youtube yet apparently.
Check on spotify, the whole album is there
Well, on EMG-TV !!
trololoooo
Thank you all!!
Cool. But not really digging EMG's on a Laney. Does anyone know if it's a modeler?
This is a rather eloquent way to say (with all due respect) "fuck you, James Hetfield".
Just so everyone knows about the tuning, he's playing a 7-string and the lowest string's tuned to B-flat. I have perfect pitch and I hope this helps.
Bb F Bb Eb F Bb Eb
Jesus christ that technique.
+Tom Dickinson Downpick it all of it then tell me it's not exhausting haha.
+John Browne Palm muting cleanly during the opening riff screws me right over. At least it's not as vicious as Doxa. What were you thinking!? haha
+John Browne You rock man!
Tom, dude, you should post a cover. Im interested in watching how you play it.
thank you based m0numan
Hands Down...*_*
#Right_hand_so_Fu*king_PERFECTO...!!!!
This is just called Horcrux isn't it? And Jinn is a totally different song.
Yeah...was just a misunderstanding amidst a few name changes...it's just Horcrux
Oh fuck yes!
this is probably one of the best djent riffs of all time hands fucking down
That Strandberg in the back though!
What kind of Ibanez was that?
custom rga7
uestion now is, what pick does he use? looks quite thick
khoirus sobri looks like a regular 1mm, black Dunlop Jazz 3
sorry for typo!
+Isan Simpson 1mm Nylon/Max grip. I hate jazz 3's
thanks john!
John Browne my man big question here, how does a god like yourself decide which instrument to use when writing a song ? 37 people cant Downstroke
I'm not a fan of the 8-string thing going on,but that man right here is fucking killing it!Gotta check Monuments!
Even though that's a 7-string, I get what you mean
Good thing this is a seven string then
Yea,i noticed that this is a 7-string but i mean the type of playing :D!
Yeah, the Djent style isn't my cup of tea either
..and I thought James Hetfield had a good right hand. This man is another level. Kudos.
Fuck the fret board, I just want to watch him pick!
which ibanez model is it?
Ibanez RGIT27FE Natural Flat
Think you got the title wrong
Anyone // tell my please / What model Ibanez?
Is it just me or does the scale length seem a bit short for a seven string?
Looks so much like Claudio from Coheed
that righthand.... I can't believe it
so intense
