    Retrofit... maybe the most important check is going to be oil bands - especially where a reduced base circle is reached for trying to get at bigger lift. You can get in trouble high or low - no peeking allowed!. Second, lifter bore centers: square vs cam center. This can be off a small amount on flat tappets and gotten away with [as long as lobe stays away from lifter edge and still spins], but lifter rollers with grossly uneven axle loads are not going to be happy for long. Could 1 degree ruin your day? Could be. Even if it survives to develop a taper on lobe or wheel and goes 1100 miles, the result is any cam walk at all is then trying to spread lifter body at axle from occasional side loading. [Jigs used to drill lifter bores rely on other things being right: cam tunnel indexed correctly, and decks/china wall are true]. Re-indexing a cam tunnel can be done for oversized bearings. Original period blocks sometimes came with near 0.005" deck taper.
    Nice touch on the spacers - that would be my choice as well, so fasteners load/stay put.

    I'm working on a 400 ford same as a 351m block. The ears on the dog bone interfere with the corners of the valley. Is it normal to need to relieve the corners of the dog bones with a radius?

      My machine shop assembled the bottom end and tapped the block for the spider kit. They must have missed the interference. Don't want to grind the block now so hopefully a little off the leg corners won't hurt it

    Any benefits from a roller cam/lifter in a street engine or is this strictly for high performance/race applications?

    • @Blazer02LS
      @Blazer02LS 2 года назад +4

      With modern oils it's real easy to wipe a flat tappet cam because of the lack of zinc in the oil that provides the protection at the face of the cam lobes where the pressure is extremely high and the oil film cannot prevent metal on metal contact, with the roller cam that is no longer a problem as the roller reduces the friction and pressures. Another benefit is that you can run a better cam profile with the rollers.

I have another question,, my harmonic balancer seperated on my 4.3 while assembling the motor.., I have read that the harmonic balancer and the flywheel as well as crankshaft drilling balances the engine.. so are harmonic balancers critical in getting the engine balanced, can I use any one for that engine or do I need to have anything done. ive heard the 4.3 without the balancer shaft, (which I have). can be real shakers.

      The lifter is taller, and a smaller base circle would put the lifter further in the lifter bore.

    oh goody! this vid may help my brother, He just got his 347for the comet back from machinist We were just disgusing this he told me the late model 302 block he used was a roller from factory so he just needs ford racing lifters but now i can look at his block make sure and compare where im confused is he told me the lifters have dog bones i think you call them like on chevys Idk whats going on with this stroker build of his. I know he just doesnt really know and i go with it thinkin the machinest will tell him what to get but maybe hes getting fucked, first he bought the rods and pistons and had block bored .020 over afterwards i thought was odd then yest i looked at the skat crank and it said a 3.00 stroke isnt that stock 302?
