    sometimes the reward method doesn't work for me because I think "I'll treat myself with a cookie...but i could have a cookie now...i'll have a cookie now" and then nothing gets done lmao, so I now have a special planner with a special pen I ONLY use for planning. Even if I'm not doing much, even just looking at my planner puts me into "school mode" where even just writing a list of tasks to do helps. I've trained my brain like a dog to see the planner and pen and think "homework time" and then I puts me into the mood
    Edit: keep your homework/work stationary all in one place. I have a binder that came with a planner i use and i can slide my pens and loose notes in it without it being bulky. When it comes to ADHD, but neurodivergency in general, we don't always see what we need and therefore forget. I keep everything in one spot and never mix it with my normal stationary. It only stays in one bag or purse with me and keeps my habit up. I even have a special pocket in my bag i use for my planner only. Little things like that mean nothing for most people, but a lot for NDs. It's what keeps my momentum. Sometimes that means keeping your shoes on until you finish your chores or maybe it means cleaning your house before you can write any emails. Figure out what's good for you!

    • @Lthevamp
      @Lthevamp 2 года назад

      @@plurpball3958 Any pen can be special, but one of my special interests is pens/stationary and I prefer smooth writing and feel over aesthetics. If you want a good quality pen without spending tons of money, I recommend:
      -Uniball Signo 207 Retractable Gel Pen (this is the one I use for school and planners only)
      -Uniball Vision Elite Pen
      -Uniball Pilot G-2
      -EnerGel Kuro Liquid Gel Pen
      -Pilot Precise V5
      Again, you can use anything. Even a special highlighter or sparkly gel pen. Something memorable and never used for anything other than homework/planning. That way your brain associates it with work. Also, keep it with the planner if you can and not with other stationary. That way you don't forget it and break habit. Hope this helps!

    i'm autistic and i never understood what studying is? i remember asking others many times throughout middle school and high school what studying means and not getting an answer, attempting to pursue a bachelor's degree for the third time this semester, as i was undiagnosed all these years and the general allistic way of studying like sitting in a chair reading textbooks for hours on end was so boring and felt empty and pointless. now that i know my brain has different needs, hearing someone with similar experiences as me is very comforting. i think these are incredibly helpful thank you 💌

    Another thing that helps me remember information is dumping everything I've learned onto my friends. I really like telling my friends new things that I've learned, and doing so forces me to recall all of the information. Alternatively, you can dedicate a page in a notebook to writing down everything you can remember, but I find it more rewarding to tell other people because then they can react to the things you've said, and often times I remember comments, jokes, and other ways they've reacted which helps me recall the information on tests.

      Plus, when I'm trying to tell something to a friend (especially neurotypical ones) I have to give the information the way that wouldn't make them fall asleep instantly, which means incorporating interesting facts, associations and jokes into the subject, and also arranging the information the easy to grasp way, and this all in turn helps me to process and remember what I've learnt better.

    A) Don't fight against mood- but make mood to do it: 1. boring into exciting using your passion. Connect boring information/concepts by relating them to things you are passionate or gives you dopamine by doing it --> 2. reward base system - take breaks (rest, eat, workout, play etc, singing, dancing, drawing what rewards you? candy every paragraph?) if brain is not absorbing anything(if not hyperfocus and interest) to get in mood OR incorporate reward into studying by like dancing answers or whatever
    B) More Memory tips 3. handwrite, colours into writing - favourite colour for harder information. lists or paragraphs or numbers- find how you memorize information best - write symbols on paper. 4. Make your own tests (qs and answers) - you can have friend ask the qs. Record on the phone - leave a pause (for future you to answer) and then record answer. Very good for commute time.

    Another thing is for math problems, write how to solve each type of problem out in words as a set of steps generalized to every problem of that type where the only difference is the number value. This way, you have a step by step guide to solve each problem type to memorize instead of needing to practice a bunch of individual problems and having to figure out the next step each time you do a problem of that type as if it is a completely separate problem; this helps because now you'll have a memorized template to follow as it consolidates the information into a few things to memorize. Usually I do one problem or two of that type and then I go back and mark down the generalized outline of the steps of how to solve that problem type.

I've nearly dropped out multiple times; but I ended up taking a year out instead. I'm back and in my final year (of a course that I'm not super great/interested in) and I'm determined to complete it. I wasn't diagnosed until after school so I didn't get to find my own way of studying, but I can say something that really helps me is finding a way to divide the information. I have a notes tip for history. I struggle with American History as well because it can be SO boring and hard to follow. Ive realized it’s difficult because my textbook is just throwing around a BUNCH of different dates! I’m better at dates than I thought and my notes before were SO LONG but I started making timeline notes. It works MUCH better! You write down all the dates in the text, arrange them in chronological order. The line is vertical through the page so you do dashes for the dates in order. You write down what happens on that day and a little more background information! It’s kind of hard to explain verbally so I’ll probably make a Tik Tok on it!

    When I needed to learn my lines for the last play I was in, I practiced at home with the same basic setup I would have onstage, moved around the way I would do it onstage, and sometimes even wore part of my costume while I practiced. It helped a bunch, because I was having to learn my lines while recovering from the 2nd worst concussion I've ever gotten (had I not been wearing a helmet when the worst one happened, I might not be alive today, and if I hadn't during the 2nd worst, I probably would have been hospitalized; instead, I just took it easy for a few weeks and after that was basically fine), so practicing while moving around, instead of just sitting still and staring at the words on the page, helped me associate the lines with the movement, and that definitely increased my ability to actually learn them. Wearing part of my costume for practice also helped for our first dress rehearsal, too, which went a bit rough because having the costumes on made it harder for a lot of people to remember their lines, but since I was used to it already, it didn't affect my recall at all, despite the concussion.

    Honestly the thing that's helped me the most has been putting things I need to remember into my own words. Sounds a bit cheesy, but for real. Whenever I take notes for a class, I try to add in my opinion about things occasionally (especially in History, I actually love history-related things but adding in a little extra of my own thoughts really solidifies it for me) or re-word whatever Im supposed to be writing. If I had to take a guess at why it works for me, it's probably because, while copying things puts them into my mind for a second, putting them in my own words keeps it in my mind for a little longer and engages me a little more, and my ADHD brain loves that extra engagement. Probably also why fill-in-the-blank-style notes are absolutely atrocious for me.

      Hope the ideas work for you 😊😊😊. Also doublecheck that struggling to study is based on being ‘not interested’, I know that sounds weird (and different tips work from different forms of neurological functioning), but it could also be that the study ‘method’ isn’t interesting, or the level of challenge is too low for your brain to engage, or that you can’t connect the study task to a more interesting ‘greater purpose’ so to speak, or even that the area of study is so boring that it needs interesting people to come along and make it interesting and engaging....In any area of study, it’s great to remember that it may not just be valuable for you, but that you are capable of adding value to it. Lol hope this was helpful and not just information overload lol.

    I like to add voice acting to my reading because it spices up the information, making it more memorable. Though it does take a little bit longer, but I gotta switch up methods anyway to adapt to whatever phase of wear my brain is at with processing power for the day.
    I am traaaaash at the reward system thing, though.
    But also, should I use the reward after I accomplish a segment of something, or should I incorporate that reward into my process of studying?
    Another thing I do is set a timer; Just a super-basic way to make sure my time is always being utilized for something necessary.

      Does your uni offer any social clubs or extracurriculars or research hubs? I joined the debate team and we basically spent our time debating the study notes in our subjects each week, and that was really useful in learning things. The research hubs also provided public workshops so it helped show how the units I was studying were combined to create things that were useful.

    My guitar teacher would draw this little cartoon character, “marvin memory” on things he wanted me to learn backward and forward (literally and figuratively). At the uni, I caricaturized my professors in the margins of my notes next to text that seemed particularly important, especially things that they repeated without writing on the board. “Maynard says…” (ie he didn’t just say it once… he says it). I would use my enhanced long term memory to help my students with vertically integrating our curriculum.

    I am newly diagnosed with adhd, and sensory issues so I have a lot of struggles with memorizing so thanks so much for these tips!
    Also, history is my least favorite and it’s my hardest subject, and I love musicals too!
    Edit: so i have a question. My middle school makes us take a ridiculous amount of hand written notes and I’m terrible at keeping up with writing it all down, so my entire lunch is just taking more notes. I need all the notes to study for tests, but I want to be able to have a break in lunch. Should I ask to type them instead or something like that? The biggest problem is that typing doesn’t help memorization. What do I do? I really struggled last year, and I just want this year to be better.
    Edit: oh! I also have dyscalculia apparently!

      @@charlottefletcher that is such an amazing accommodation, your teacher sounds awesome!!! Totally agree that you definitely deserve a lunch break @Audrey Bennet 😊 Plus it makes sense because physical activity is always going to help your brain function better. I have to agree with Paige that the best tip Is always to make it interesting, lol notes are kinda boring, But if you can turn the notes (or keywords) it into a poem, a song, a RUclips vid (me and my goddaughter use this), a story, a dance routine....Honestly anything is possible and the best part about ADHD is we do have an awesome ability to make even the most boring of tasks interesting

    • @robertairvin2310
      @robertairvin2310 3 года назад +4

      If you are in an Individualized Education Program or something similar, you can get note taking as an accommodation. Another thing that helps is to use lots of abbreviations, and in some cases you can even use simple symbols like math symbols to replace long words. For example, instead of saying x leads to y, write x ‐‐> y because it takes less time to write out.

    I think the reward system with like a piece of food at the end of each paragraph thing, I’ll certainly try that out but idk if it will work in the end just because I feel like I’ll be way too focused on what the reward it and getting to it as fast as possible because I know that whatever I want to eat is great and good for the soul that I don’t even focus on the paragraph I am reading. Spacing out is a lot what adhd is…. Lol but this video was great!! Thank you so much all hail Paige I love the neurodivergent club

I’ve never really developed or felt the need of a regimen of study, just by reading the chapters or my few notes i was able to get A+ throughout all my life, BUT it all changed when i got into college 🥲 I noticed that my few efforts of learning the subjects weren’t enough for the amount of information that I needed to memorize in such a short period of time and sadly, i also realized that I never really learned how to study because I never truly “needed” it :// it’s just now that I’m trying to find actual ways of studying, i guess im a bit late lol

    Thank you so much! This was super helpful. I am a highly sensitive person (HSP) and therefore neurodivergent. I did not know this about myself until my 30's and I always just thought I was strange and honestly sometimes dumb because it would be so hard for me to focus or retain things in a traditional setting/with traditional study methods! I do have a pretty terrible memory and I attribute that to constantly being overwhelmed/focused on my environment as an HSP and also to my anxiety disorder. I did OK in school, got my undergrad and now I'm getting my masters in counselling psychology. I definitely struggled with courses that I did not find interesting - especially math. For me visualizing things in my own way or handwriting things really helps me to retain information. I am definitely going to try the reward system as this is something I have never done. I can also totally relate to not forcing yourself to study when your're not in the mood. Sometimes if I force myself to study I will not absorb any information at all and just have to go back again! I wish I knew all these things when I was younger - school would have probably been less challenging and stressful. My 2-year old daughter is also an HSP and I am so grateful that I can empathize and support her and share these study tips with her when she's in school.

    Something I learned in a child and adolescent psychology class is that using food as a reward isn't great. Especially with young kids because they then connect food with a reward and so when they feel down and need a pick me up they will "stress eat", later in life it can cause problems with eating disorders and food addictions. I'm unsure how it is if you reward an adult with food but I can only imagine it would be similar. Just wanted to share some knowledge that I learned incase it helps anyone else!!
