  • We all miss the ability to Repair Disk Permissions in the Disk Utility Application in Mac OS X.
    Here is a command line command that will allow you to get that functionality back.
    The command is below. You can cut and paste it into Terminal to complete the command:
    diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`

    I haven't done it yet, but if I fail, it won't be your fault. Your instructions were all that I could have wanted or expected. I might add that, years ago, I was having problems with some of the websites I regularly visited. I blamed it on those #$^&%#@*^!!! websites, and it was more than a YEAR later that someone told me that maybe it was a PERMISSIONS. problem He was right and thinking about that just now made me think that it might be PERMISSIONS again. That's why I''m here. Thanks again for your help.

    how to do this for an External Drive. Thanks

    • @acjunior72
      @acjunior72 4 года назад +3

      Yeah that would be nice. If possible? The current Mac disk utility is a mess! I ran “first aid” on a 4TB external HD this morning, it was just acting odd,. Anyway, this First Aid made the drive an unstable mess. Only claiming “back up drive now, error found.” Finally after 45 min I can now see the files on this drive, but it’s now only “read only.” (Smh!!) changing permissions or “fixing them “ not an option anymore unless there is a terminal command? I’ll have to back up GBs of stuff to another smaller drive...then reformat this now read only drive I guess. At least I have that option but this is silly! 😒 not the first time, I’ve had multiple Mac Externals simply change to “read only” out of the blue.

    Thanks, this repair a problem I had with Sierra asking passwords on renaming or trying to trash files. My first mac was a SE 30 and I never have problems that I cannot fixe until the last OS versions. Removing the possibility by Apple was obviously a mistake or a voluntary omission to sale their newer stuff. Thanks a thousand time. My trusted “Repair permissions” Is back and when you see online that newer OS dont need it is obviously false.

    But, how to repair permissions to the external HD (Seagate 2TB) that has data, but somehow got "uninitialized" with a message 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' that Mac system no longer see the mount/partition to be able to access the data. Disk Utility, First Aid was complete (super quick), but did not fix it. FYI, I have a backup copy of data on another HD 2TB Disk. What is the correct command prompt via Terminal for 'disk 2' not 'Macintosh HD disk 1'? Maybe I am doing something that isn't possible. I had OS problems after about 9 years so I did a new install of High Sierra. I did a "Get Info" on my Macintosh HD drive that was upgraded by an Apple shop from 1 TB to 2 TB about five years ago. I thought that before I did the new install that I had in "Sharing & Permissions" system Administrators and my account name with "Read & Write" for both. But the Administrators and my account name are missing and when I tried to add them I got the Repair Disk Permissions error. Am I suppose to be able to have Administrators and my account listed under "name" or am I off track? (I posted the error below in a previous post.)
