Its old school but I find just writing a physical shopping list helps me because I know when I'm picking up something I don't actually need. Helps me to decide whether or not to treat myself.

My grandparents worked seasonally in a tomato canning factory back in the 60s. When my dad was little he would go to work with them during the summers. He remembers the blank cans coming down the belt and they would get Hunts labels stuck on. When that roll of labels ran out the belt would stop and a guy would come put a new roll of labels on, this time Del Monte, next time store brand. Same tomatoes, same cans, different label. Every time dad taught a financial class (adjunct professor at the community college) he would tell that story to his students. When you were talking about the cheese being the same, just different packages, it reminded me of my dad :)

Ugh that’s so crazy! And kinda makes me mad that they do that. Although I have to say there are certain items that I have found the generic brand to not taste as good. So I don’t know why that is. Like the canned tomatoes usually the store brand doesn’t taste as good to me.

I have done all these things for years. Also, sometimes the name brand item is cheaper than the store brand. I always buy the cheapest. My store does a ten for ten with the 11th free. That's when I stock up.
I shop the sale and base my list on that. I also use my loyalty card and coupons. But the best thing I have ever done is to open my calculator app and add as I go. It keeps me from spending to much on items I don't need.
I'm happy to say, my family is debt free and we just paid off our mortgage. Living frugally has its benefits. 😁

I find this to be false for me, it doesn't matter how hungry I feel, if it's my money I'm spending and not someone else's I'll always be far more conservative regardless of how hungry I may be, for me the bottom dollar always rules not my hunger. If it's someone else's money then I'm spending a shit ton regardless if I'm really hungry or stuffed.

My Nan has a saying: stock is as good as money. Buying cans and frozen, things that will last, when they're reduced or on sale, and having a stocked pantry and freezer, will serve you when your funds are lower. Stockpile when you can and it'll serve you when you can't. Having the stock is as good as having the money.

I live by that same advice! My spouse works in a hot factory and drinks a large bottle of Gatorade every day. So when I catch it on sale at Kroger (local grocery) for .59 cents I love to stock up for him (just bought 48 bottles last week!) since he typically spends $1 or more per bottle daily. We do the same for juicey juice with our kids, they drink so little of it that when Kroger has them for $1 a bottle (normally $2.80) I like to buy five or more bottles. They seem to have the best deals on “manager special” reduced meat as well. It’s the cheapest way for me to create a stock pile of meat in our freezer and we buy our ground beef and chicken in bulk from a local deli for super cheap and then I bag it myself in sizing I can take out and thaw for dinner.
There have been times where we were broke, and got through hard times by using up our stock pile.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you will use a gallon of milk or something well before the expiration date, to go ahead and buy the one that expires sooner. If everyone goes in and buys the furthest item back, many items will go bad and have to be thrown out, causing prices to go up and also being wasteful. Just something to keep in mind.

A very wise comment. I had never looked at it that way. If your milk will be used in 2 to 3 days and has 5 days on the best before date, buy that! In the UK it is getting ridiculous because all of us shop from the bac of the shelves! This explains why so much ends up as yellow sticker buys. I am not a yellow sticker fan, but stores must be losing a fortune and this in turn puts jobs at risk. More and more we have self service tills and scan as you go shopping. This necessitates far fewer staff and we are already short on jobs here. Cheers x

There's this app that I've been using called PICKl, and I've found a ton of cheaper alternative brands using it. The app directs you to a product in a store, and it pays you $5 for taking a picture of it on the shelf.

  • @misso295

In Australia the generic rule doesn’t always apply to cans and jars. A lot of the time the brand-named jars and cans are more expensive because they’re produced by Australian growers and factories whilst the cheaper ones come from China where the farming laws are a lot looser and the factories don’t offer their workers fair conditions. Another consideration is that the supermarket owned brands like Select don’t have to buy shelf space, so they’re cheaper, but this edges out independently owned brands that give people jobs and offer farmers more options. All I’m saying is that sometimes paying 70c extra on crushed tomatoes is better than making a donation to a local charity.

My favorite tip, does necessarily save you money from the get go, but my family rarely drinks milk, but we do need it and use it. We actually buy organic milk, not because we care about it being organic, but because the expiration date is sometimes more the a month longer then non organic milk. As a family that takes a while to go through a gallon, this has really helped us from being wasteful, saving us money in the long run.

Watch the price per ounce labels because they’re not always correct. I’ve caught Walmart’s labels showing soda cans per ounce for the 24 packs vs price per can on the 12 packs. It makes it look cheaper to buy the 24 pack when it’s really not. It never hurts to pull out your phone’s calculator from time to time and check the math.

I’ve found that the best way to keep household supply costs down is to use as few consumable items as possible and invest in long lasting durable alternatives. I.e. glass storage containers and cloth sandwich bags, cloth napkins/towels/hankerchiefs, bowls with lids instead of plastic wrap, sharpen and reuse razor cartridges as long as possible, wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets, cloth diapers when our kids were small, rechargeable batteries, etc.
We also do DIY stuff like cleaning with baking soda and vinegar.
Our household supply budget is pretty minimal because there’s not that many items that have to be purchased on a recurring basis.

Love, Love Love this video!!! My 2 tips: co-op lunches and splitting groceries with other families/friends. So for the co-op lunches, I worked out providing salad and chobani yogurt for myself and co-worker (bought everything at Costco) and my co-worker would supply the protein and dinner. His wife would often make a double batch which worked out as lunch for him and me and sometimes dinner if they had a lot leftover. Also, at the time, my cousin & I were both single so we’d go to Costco together and buy perishable and non-perishable items together and split the cost. Even though we were buying in bulk, we were able to save on cost.

Love these tips, especially cause I do almost all of these. The only exception is the cream soups - Depending on my recipe, especially in a dip, will use Campbell’s over the store brand. I’ve tried several off-brand and store brands and I’ve learned through trial and error that Campbell’s is a little thicker and makes a difference in the taste in the end.
Another tip - when the produce is on discount/sale - like broccoli or green beans, I will buy extra and cut them up to store in the freezer.
Thanks Jordan! Love your videos ❤️

I think name brands & store/generic is touch and go. Most foods I get the store brand. I get the store brand excedrine and ibrophen. One time I got a store brand apricot face scrub instead of the St. Ives brand and the formula was totally different. The concentration of exfoliating granules was much, much less than the actual brand. Just experiment I guess.

Love the tips. Grocery shopping is my least favorite task but it's just two of us so thankfully, I can get it done pretty quickly. I would just like to add, it's a good habit to bring reusable shopping bags. Not only are they stronger and much easier to handle. They don't end up in our landfills, rivers, oceans and ultimately our drinking water and seafood like the plastic ones do. And, many grocers give a per bag discount when you bring your own. We should reduce and recycle single use plastic as often as we can. So happy that I came across your channel. Thanks!

Ann Smith even with the convenience fee? For some reason I have a hard time with spending the 10 dollars! 😆 Do you do this weekly or bi-weekly? I can see how it would keep you from buying impulse foods though! Do they usually do a good job with fresh fruits and veggies? Or do you get those yourself?

    • @kathy3178
      @kathy3178 6 лет назад +5

Katy Huckabee, no convenience fee at either Walmart, I do pickup. They do require a $30 purchase. Instead of a paper list, I just add to my cart. Then when my husband gets paid,I check out and go pick up at a designated time. They are better at selecting produce than I am. The Costco in my area doesn't have delivery or pickup. I make a list in the app and stick to that. I have it organized by location. I try to get in and out as fast as possible.

There’s always a difference between being taught, BY A MOM, how to make and save money and being taught BY A DAD. The guys do a really good job teaching these things but the women pay attention to the little details that mean SO MUCH MORE!! Lol..... So glad to see that someone else notices the hidden positions of items with later expiration dates, the double cost of items with the split weight, the need to handpick vs get the sweet potatoes or fruits already bagged or chopped respectively. The tip on eggs, the tip on same product with different labels, and so much more???? What an eye opener - and Whitney Sews even authenticates that (somewhere on the comment section here) with her own father's real life experience of same packaging trick!!!!!! Oh mehnn!! Girl u rock!! U ladies rock!! I watched ur envelope tip on budgeting, and now you’ve added even more tip to split the weekly budgeting/shopping into categories!!! You’re awesome!!! You really are!! So, Thanks!!!

I think the generic vs. brand name = same exact product argument is sometimes true, but I've tried Great Value cream of mushroom soup and it's definitely not the same thing as Campbell's. I would recommend that you buy a can of brand name and generic and open them both up and see how they are actually different. I did not enjoy the flavor/texture of the store brand cream of mushroom soup, but I do like Campbell's. It really depends on the product. For example, I do like Great Value peanut butter and it's crazy cheaper than brand name. But other things... nah-uh.

One tip that I've seen is if you like the name brand better, try to find a coupon for it and use it on the name brand. The name brand with a coupon will save you more money if you know you won't eat the store brand.

I agree Alisa. I love Campbell's soups. I also noticed a difference in Fry's (Kroger's) peanut butter. Store brand was runny. And I don't usually buy meat from Walmart. Their meat has a water/salt solution added. I buy from Safeway or Fry's for meats. This week Albertson's has eggs for .88cent a dozen with a digital coupon. Can't beat that.. well, a couple weeks ago they had eggs for 77cent. And Safeway had a digital coupon for a 'Free dozen. I also use the Walmart Savings Catcher..

Hubby and I have a budget of $500/month for a family of 9. My favorite money savers are: going to the discount bread store, the discount bakery rack at Walmart, chipping in together with other family members to buy a whole or half animal to store and use over several months, Costco coupons!!! (Woot-woot! You can plan your stock-up, as certain things come around regularly.), Case Lot sales of course (the good ones...wait for them and have enough on hand to skip if they aren't a good deal), learn to make the most amazing beans and rice ever so you can have them often and still enjoy them lol, and teach the kiddos to cook...plus others. We have one kiddo who just makes sure we don't run out of hard boiled eggs. It is a lot cheaper, and healthier, and they stay full faster, if they are snacking on protein and things we've made ourselves. Thank goodness soaked blender pancakes made w/ milk kefir is one of their favorites! There are lots more money saving things of course, gardening, canning and such...but my favorites are the ones that save me money and I have time for without running me ragged. :)

Growing in a square foot garden is also an easy way to supplement and it’s cheap to start and maintain and customizable for a family. Thanks for all the great advice. Just subbed 😘

My mom, bless her, taught me lots of tips on how to save money shopping.... Many of the same you shared! I spend more per person than you recommend, thanks to some dietary needs in our family, but I still try to save as much as I can.
Buying meat close to the sell by date really saves money. I also buy meats on sale and freeze and stock up. I shop at BJ's (like Costco) and use the coupons. Also check in your area and see if there are any discount grocery stores or farm stands. Sometimes you can pick through and find good stuff. Or if, for instance, strawberries are in season and a really good price, I will stock up and freeze them for smoothies. Don't buy produce that is not in season! It won't taste as good and it will be more expensive. That means we eat more oranges and Clementines and grapefruits in the winter and early spring, and strawberries and other seasonal fruit in the spring, and melons and other berries and such in the summer, and then a lot of apples pears and grapes in the fall....

Ms. Jennifer's Life I don't really see the point in that because the pesticides get into the fruit/veggie, they don't just sit on the skin. Also if they are GMO they are affected from the inside. The actual seed and the plant that grows from it have toxins from the start.

    • @MeganAlinaBlair
      @MeganAlinaBlair 6 лет назад +35

No they are probably not pesticide free but they are greatly reduced. Many fruits and veggies that have thicker skin have a lower content of pesticides. For example avocados have some of the lowest. If you can’t afford to buy all organic it’s a doable option for many families. Less is way better then more.

    • @msnae0101
      @msnae0101 6 лет назад +59

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that GMOs are unhealthy or dangerous. They actually reduce the amount of pesticides that farms need to use. Organic crops are still sprayed with pesticides, and some even more dangerous than conventional crops.

I normally buy generic but when I checked labels I noticed it had more sodium and sugar than the name brand! Now this isn't always the case. I hope a lot of people follow this video because I know when my husband and I bought a house, we needed to save money for food and I have always been observant of price per ounce. It’s true that knowing the unit price breakdown will save you a ton of money every time. Problem is some people are super obsessed with the brand name and don’t care they’re being ripped off. Like you said generic is almost always a good deal. Another way to help is to have set prices in your mind, things like “I will only buy chicken if it’s less than $1.49 a pound” or “I will only buy ground beef if it’s less than $4/pound”. If you’re observant on what meat should cost and you stick to that, you can avoid getting ripped off.

I don’t know when I started doing it, but I buy two of everything. That way I use one and have one. Family members have said I am weird, glad I am not the only one who dies this.
I also look for ‘dead meat’, which is my way of saying the close to expiration date, reduced cost meat. Check with the meat department staff if things are being marked down, sometimes they have a rack in the back that they are currently tagging.
Another tip I got from my sister is to check all the tags on the sale item meat. Sometimes they get so busy tagging that they will make a mistake on the price. It doesn’t happen very often, but you can get really good deals that way because the store will honor it! My sister found nice steaks for .54 (instead of $5.40) and I have gotten family sized packages of pork for $1.00 instead of $10.00. I pointed it out to the cashier and she said they should have paid closer attention to what they were doing, and she rang it up as tagged.

Reusable bags have a large initial carbon footprint, but make up for it after a few thousand uses, which they often don't last for, and maintaining them to be sanitary makes them even less viable. The good thing is they do prevent micro and macro plastic waste buildup, but that should be resolved by new innovative recycling or careful waste management.

@@kammietakahashi8467 And while that is true, the USA needs to start using non woven. Cotton and other fabric based reusable bags are still a big majority in my area. I use reusable nonwoven cooler bags to store meats, fish, and fragile items since they can be washed easily, but as the study you linked shows, only non woven really work well. The other three have major flaws when reused, are such as paper hardly up to the task of 3 reuses, and cotton (the one in my area) being needed of 130 or so uses before being viable. The big thing about plastics is that they are very recyclable without even being taken to a recycling center. People use them for bathroom trash liners and for household applications, and similar.
Something I do hope for is the carbon fiber recycling methods to become more regular with them, and more effecient, being a wonderful way to use extra bags. Unfortunately, many people leave these bags to litter, or throw them away without reusing them, which is the littering issue. I can't speak for the UK where your study takes place as I do not have first hand experience there, but the US needs to catch up on more environment friendly practices instead of blatant waste, especially our food waste which could just about feed the world.

I've made a few of my own and I can't believe there is any sort of carbon print in using old fabric I've had for years. All goes in the wash like any other fabric thing I have. Towels, clothes, sheets and so on. I realize not everyone sews but I'm sure most of us could find someone to help or shop for good reusable bags.

@@jm1361 Sanitation purposes for meat is still an issue since it isn't a barrier, but rather behaves like a sponge with cloth. To top it off, unless you are hand sewing, which would be quite the effort, that electrical energy gotta come from somewhere. Similarly, the material did come from somewhere, in a much likely less efficient way as plastic has (due to how cheap the bags can be made for each, and each being reusable as trash bags).
I do love making drawstring bags and stuff for other purposes, but as a chef, I can't stand cloth things (except cheese cloth, haha!) for my produce, cause even when washed, the bag will not protect the groceries from what will inevitably be on the surface of them from just being in the open world (unless you live in a super sanitized environment or one with no humidity).
Also, you still gotta use those reusable bags many times more that you would think, if you check the study the other commenter linked.

Loved these tips!! Weigh your containers of strawberries, blue berries, black berries and raspberries. There are big differences in the weights and you can get 25% more. Also when I buy milk, I buy one extra. Then I use empty juice containers, water bottles, old gator aid bottles, etc and pour the milk in leaving an inch space at the top for expansion when it freezes. Then in the morning when I see that the milk will be running out I pull one of my containers out of the freezer and let it thaw an hour in the sink (it's frozen it won't go bad) then put it on the top shelf in the refrigerator to thaw the rest of the way. I've never had any taste differences.

    Bonjour
One of your French viewer ! Love your videos because I always learn something : today the egg tip 🤣 usually I open the box and take the eggs one by one in hand to check !
I'm still learning at 53 and especially from the youngest and I love it !
In a way we are pretty similar according to grocery shopping and elaborating menus ! The difference is : I live in France 🇫🇷 and you are from the USA ! And it's so interesting to me to see the way you compose your menus, snacking...
we don't usually snack in France except children who have collations or goûter. For adults we call it grignotage and it's considered as a bad habit
But things are actually changing ! But not for good sometimes !
Oh by the way I gave the envelope tip to my daughter and a friend of her and it works for them ! They are students and have a few hour job in a week so they needed to be aware with the money they earn. And actually they go on with 3 envelopes ( 1 for the daily spend I would say such as food , transport... ) the 2d one for entertainment and presents ( always a birthday on the go) and the 3rd one for Summer holidays. And it works so well ! They save so much money ! And my daughter boyfriend as just started to do the same !
    So thanks a lot 😉

Lily Val>I think the French have it right with no snacking. Every time we eat our insulin release spikes, by grazing all day our bodies remain in constant fat storage mode. When insulin levels fall our bodies release energy (stored sugar as fat). When your insulin levels are chronically high you can never gain access to the fat stored on your body. The key is quality carbs, fats and protien. Eating more quality fats at meal time will keep you satisfied between meals and plenty of vegetables will keep you full. Look into insulin resistance, leads to a host of illnesses ie: diabetes, inflammation, arthritis. The French are some of the healthiest people in the west...so I hear;)

Very interesting. All those tips are very common in Asian culture. My frugal side always loves a deal or free even if I make enough to afford full price. I’d rather use the money on something else plus I enjoy seeing how much I saved.
Also, if you see a product such as packaged meat that is within 3 days of its sell by date, you can bring it to the meat counter and ask for the discount sticker (yellow sticker you referenced in the video). I get several items that I can get stickers for and vacuum seal most things and freeze them and they keep much longer or cook with it right away ina dish that can be frozen and thawed later for a quick meal.

There is a difference in taste between store brands and name brand cheese. Great Value is ok, but not as good as Kraft. I am talking block Cheddar cheese that you slice. Check the nutrition facts, and you will see the fat and sodium levels are slightly different. That is why they taste different. I have noticed with store brand cheese, they leave out some fat, and replace it with salt. That is part of why it is cheaper.

    1. Usually at the end of the month butchers have "discount packs". It would be a mix of different kinds of meat in 10 kg or 12 k packs. It works out much cheaper than buying everything separately. At home I just pack it in the correct portions and freeze or prepare meals and freeze.

Then why are the nutrition facts different? Someone else on here commented that Kraft manufactures their own cheese, so which is it? At the plant I worked at the cheese came in big bulk blocks, like 500 pounds, so I’m fairly sure it was all the same product and they didn’t switch the blocks from the cutting line, just reloaded the bags and wrappers. As far as the nutrition content, I’d probably say because cheese can vary slightly in nutrition, and that’s how they can change it up. I don’t know if all plants do that by the one I worked at did and it was a huge plant with many different brand names they worked with.

We have a bacon factory that we staff for and when we done our tours and talking to employees, bacon of all kinds comes from that location. Difference is the better brands get the better cuts, it comes from the same pig. The bacon bits are of several brands as well, again depends on the cuts and waste from the bacon. We also staff for a candle factory (which is not eatable) but the same with candles there are several brands that come from the machine, difference they add a different scent every so often which creates a combined scent. And the strong scents come from the start of the batch cause the scent fades. It's nothing for factories to make the same product. If you watch information on the dum dum factory that mystery flavor is just two flavors combined. Qhen one flavor ends they add another and any excess from the first combined with that second is a mystery flavor.

I love shopping at stores like ALDI, they have their own brands of very great quality shelf products, and the price is so cheap! So I usually go about once a months and stock up on shelf items. Fruits and veggies I just buy as needed since I can walk to the store, also try to buy organic as much as possible, go by the dirty dozen list also and just pick what is really necessary! But sometimes Ill compare price of a local fruits and veggie place with the organic store, and the price difference is only about 10c per pound! In those case I much prefer to buy organic.
I can never seem to get such a cheap grocery cause we are jewish and kosher meat is super expensive, as well as kosher cheese, and we host a lot on shabbat! but I remember when I was single, I would shop for about 25$ per week for myself so thats within the 100$ per person/month :)

The grabbing from the back only works if they actually rotate like they are suppose to. 😆 I worked in grocery and always did, but most I knew did not and 90% of the time when I'm grocery shopping, I find the oldest in the back. Milk is an exception since it is put in in the back, but sometimes the bottom sits longer so that may be older. Typically milk has a high enough turnover that it doesn't make much, if any, of a difference. I love the egg trick idea! We get like 8 dozen for large family at a time, so I will have to try that next time! Thanks for the tip! 🙂
