I feel like it's important to note that Twilight is in denial for most of the episode. Because she is in a position of power she feels as if she should be above things like jealousy. It certainly doesn't help that she's the "Princess of Friendship", a title that implies that she knows just about everything there is about friendship and that she is the go-to pony for advice on that subject. Because of that, there's a feeling of almost betraying her title when she notices herself getting jealous. Mentors are supposed to have already gone through and dealt with problems like that. She feels as if she should be over this. That leads to the main moral of the episode: It's ok to be jealous, even if you feel as if you should be above it. But there's also a secondary message to this episode, and that's that you sometimes you miss out on things in life, and that's ok too. When Twilight dedicates those three days to herself, she wasn't thinking about what she might be missing, and so when she finds that time did indeed keep moving and that she missed some things during those days it gets to her. She wishes she had been apart of it, and maybe even regrets her choices. She's never going to find out what happened during those three days, and neither will the audience. But that doesn't mean you should get stuck up on what you missed. Twilight gets jealous during the episode because all she's focusing on is the moments she missed and didn't get the chance to be apart of, but what both her and the audience should be focusing on is the events that come after. She can still spend time with her friends now that those three days are over, and while she can't go back and time to find out what those old jokes were, she can certainly make new ones. Overall, I feel like what the episode is trying to say is that it's ok to feel jealous about missing out on certain events, but that you shouldn't let those feelings get to you and instead focus on making new memories in the present. Your friend's lives still move on when you're not there, but that doesn't mean that your no longer friends. It just means that there are some things you won't be there for, and that's ok. Because there are plenty of things you will be there for.

This episode rubbed me the wrong way since something similar happened to me, except my friends didn't rub it in my face and tried to explain it. Feeling left out sucks and making someone feel that way on purpose is just mean to me.
That's why i hate Discord so much. He would gladly toy with someone mentally, emotionally, or physically just his own sick kicks and he has the gall to hide behind an excuse of either antagonizing his victims or saying his actions helped better someone despite the obvious fact that what he did is NOT ok. Whether or not someone learns something, he deliberately hurts them, especially in Twilight's case. He happily admits to manipulating events that made Twilight envious and hurt from feeling left out of their friendship with himand still expects the girls to laugh at his jokes that helped created a situation that put Twilight in a state of shame and sadness. I will NEVER see him as a likable character no matter what anyone says.

This episode also negatively reflects on both the remane 5 and discord. Remane 5 because they didnt notice Twilight was becoming neurotic and obsessed, acted almost condescending towards her, and ignored her concerns UNTIL THE VERY END. Discord because the episode can be taken as him tormenting Twilight on purpose, almost reverting his character development
Well with Discord I actually do like how he tormented Twilight. If anything the part of the episode I dislike the most is that it takes away the negative relationship between Discord and the remainder of the mane 6. I liked the constant back and forth between them. I don´t see him tormenting Twilight as reverting his development. He has always been doing that such as in Three´s a crowd. Other times he appeared like in Princess Twillight and Twilight´s kingdom the stakes were so high that he had more important things to think about and in `Make new friends` He was distracted by Fluttershy but also didn't care at all about ruining it for Twilight.
I like that Discord and the Mane Six aren't antagonizing each other anymore. That's a dynamic that would have gotten VERY old very fast had it continued, especially since Discord was learning more and more about being a decent person. If I recall correctly, Discord wanted to give Twilight a chance to have the time to herself, which is why he suggested to the others to not invite her to anything. Making Twilight jealous and teaching her a friendship lesson was a side benefit he hadn't planned, but rolled with once he realized it was happening. He also got a taste of his own medicine at the end, bringing ALL of them closer as friends. It also makes sense to me that Twilight's Friends don't realize how far down the rabbit hole Twilight is going until the end, and that both sides learned from Cadance' wedding. But... it's a rather meh episode overall. Kind of funny, but boring, and more interesting for the ending scene where we're in on the joke than the rest of the episode.
Discord tormenting Twilight is not a new thing. He has been doing this before and after this episode (Princess Twilight Sparkle, Three's a Crowd, Twilight's Kingdom, Celestial Advice). Twilight can be seen as the element of order and logic, and Discord is chaos, that's why he's very keen on messing with her, and she's very wary and distrustful of him.
I actually enjoyed this episode. I think everyone feels it's a bad episode because they got frustrated that they didn't get to know what Discord did with the Remane 5 just like Twilight. However, when I watched it I already realized where it was leading so I was not focusing on that and just enjoy how Discord toyed around with Twilight. If you watched this episode and got frustrated that they didn't show what Discord and the Remane 5 did together you fell for the very same trap as Twilight.
I'm not proud of Twilight's choices and portrayal in this episode but I don't blame her for not trusting Discord and for believing him to be nothing but a problem. This is the same guy who wrecks her home, messes with her friendships, and endangers and toys with her life and feelings with glee and no regret. He's never done anything to be friends with her even now. I hate him for it all and he will never be someone I like. In my eyes, he treats Twilight as a torment toy that he can easily take advantage of and that just generates more hate from me. This episode proves that.

It was this episode that made me realize a new aspect of Twilight's character that builds off of her previous aspects. She's got a huge ego now. Bigger than Rainbow Dash. We see this even in Season 7, Best Aunt Ever anyone? It's built off of her worry of failing driving her to insanity. Along with Cadence's breathing trick calming her down she's gotten too complacent with worrying situations, and that's evolved to feeling as if she can't fail because her worrying about failing has evolved to being calm in risk, maybe a bit of realization that things usually work out perfectly, and her successes as a princess, friend, and teacher. It's an interesting direction for her character, but I can't say I don't miss the down to earth OCD lunatic we fell in love with in the first four seasons. Starlight has filled that role somewhat, but I also like how she's not just Retro Twilight. She's her own character.
Twilight's always had a very large ego. She's just very well raised and taught to not flaunt it. However even in episode 1 she considered herself superior to the town's ponies and felt herself above taking part in their activities. She puts great stock in her relationship with Celestia and her status as Celestia's student.
if i my say something, i was a bit bummed out about this episode, i always wanted to see Discord bond with the other ponies besides Fluttershy, and we do get that... but we dont get to see it, it would have been awesome to see them accept him as a friend

I didn't enjoy What About Discord myself, but seeing this review highlighting its good elements, even if overall you didn't enjoy it either, still gave me a new appreciation for it! I don’t like that episode because of how discord enjoys pushing Twilight and hurting her feelings...I have a friend that...is kind of like discord to me...in the most hurtful ways so this episode really hit it home for me
Yeah, Discord never did ANYTHING to actually be friends with Twilight. All he ever does when it comes to her is annoy, hurt her physically, emotionally, or mentally, or flat-out endanger her life and anyone else's life so he can watch their misery and annoyance with glee and no remorse for causing it, and he'll use anything, whether magic, her friendships, or even his new friendships to do that. I hate him so much and and I haven't seen anything that proves otherwise. He may not do that to Fluttershy but that doesn't really excuse anything

Defenetly. I love Discord but I didn't particularly like this episode. The only parts I really liked about it was when Discord shrunk when his feelings got hurt, but I always like it when he shrinks cause he looks so adorable and the part with the group laugh and hug. It reminded me of the group hug in the Twilight's Kingdom episode. (my top favorite episode with Discord).

Actually, it's more about the Brony community in general who don't like Cadence, but Silver is the one that has pointed it out the most. I have no issue with Cadence, but I wouldn't mind if she actually did something.
Yeah, it WOULD be nice if Discord got along with ponies. S 5 E 22 "What about Discord" - he befriends ponies. S 6 E 25 "To Where and Back Again" - has this dialog. Starlight Glimmer: Chrysalis and the changelings are back. They've ponynapped all of the most powerful ponies in Equestria! Celestia, Luna, Cadance, Shining Armor, Flurry Heart, Twilight and her friends. We need to- [magic zap] Discord: [hushed] They took Fluttershy? He's BORED, when he hears about kidnapping Twiligh and her friends(- Fluttershy). They could be dead to him. He only cared about Fluttershy to the point of being actually enraged. Others - he was bored and even wanted to go to sleep.
I have to be honest, What About Discord is one of my least favourite episodes in the entire series. I hated having to watch the pain that Twilight went through for missing out.
What I do like about this episode that it captures pretty well how it feels to be surrounded by people with in-jokes you don't get. As a person who'd experienced this numerous times, I appreciate it a lot. You shouldn't let you feelings of being jealous and excluded stop you from making your own in-jokes and moments with your friends. For me it's a great message.
I really like you working together with KP. With many during a colab your powerful personality and charisma somewhat overshadows them but KP is one of the few who truly seems like an equal to you rather than an assistant.
i agree wholeheartedly, and i'm glad to hear KP, a huge Discord fan, more or less agrees. i like to think i can watch episodes objectively even if i'm one of the only people on earth who doesn't like Discord. this episode handles its moral in a really poor way, and just emphasizes everything i DON'T like about Discord. i agree it would have been a lot better if we SAW why the characters suddenly liked him, what the jokes were, etc. seeing the whole thing fron Twilight's perspective, it just overemphasizes Discord's "meanspirited, annoying pest" side.
This episode, although not done very well, still hits home pretty close for me. I've been in Twilight's shoes way too often, and it's not that I'm introverted, it's that often times I want to do things that others don't want to do, and when I do invite others to do something together, they either forget or something comes up. It's at a point where I've come to think that the only way I CAN hang out with anyone is to be invited and anything else will end in disappointment.
That was the best moment I've ever seen Firebrand have in a vidoe on someone else's channel. Perhaps the best. It's always fun to see him trying to rrestrain how fired up he is
This episode for some reason, came to my mind while watching an episode of the Ducktales reboot, specifically "The Beagle Birthday Massacre!". I think it did what this episode of pony did wrong or is hated in a good way. While Twilight & Spike are lost & more likely never learn what happened, Webby was sort of in a similar position but it feels more satisfying close to the end when she did it herself and we the audience get to see it. I wonder, why is this rarely talked about?
The irony here is that the review was filled with a lot of fandom inside jokes that, unless you know all the people involved, would leave most viewers lost....
One thing about Twilight that I really enjoyed that seems to have been abandoned entirely is her scientific side. Twilight is more than books she is about knowledge and her mindset comes from science. She doesn't want to accept something if she can't understand it. I want to see more of that about Twilight being scientific and knowledgeable. It's what made her so relatable to a science nerd like myself. It's the main reason "Feeling Pinkie Keen" made such a tremendous impact on me because they really nailed how a scientist thinks. I think the last time was with Moondancer and I loved that. Show her using advanced magic and having deep knowledge. If it can be accused of being "technical jargon" then so be it. I just feel it's a big part of her character that is never touched upon anymore. It's a big reason I enjoyed "It's about Time" so much as Twilight's scientific self was in full view and I wish we had another episode like that. Maybe also involving Starlight where they have to solve some kind of scientific problem or that Twilight hits an impasse in her research.

Hi again! I was giving this another watch and felt like adding some new thoughts about the episode. Like you, I was glad to see that Discord could get along with others when they gave him a chance (even if most of it happened off-screen). The negativity between Twilight and Discord was a bit saddening though. It might have been more interesting to see Twilight wrongfully accusing Discord of using mind magic in Season 4 instead of Season 5. In an alternate version of "Twilight's Kingdom", Twilight realizing she misjudged Discord could have been part of the test she needed to pass to open the Chest of Harmony. Twilight could have earned the last chest key by making amends with Discord and properly befriending him. There would have been a lack of cool fight scenes due to Tirek's absence in this scenario, but he still could have shown up later.
Oh some many references, Doctor insano, aggretsuko, Frankenstein, another great review Silver...though speaking of shipping, does anyone want to know what KP was doing in Antony's room before she review bombed?

Remane 5 because they didnt notice Twilight was becoming neurotic and obsessed, acted almost condescending towards her, and ignored her concerns UNTIL THE VERY END. Discord because the episode can be taken as him tormenting Twilight on purpose, almost reverting his character development
Well with Discord I actually do like how he tormented Twilight. If anything the part of the episode I dislike the most is that it takes away the negative relationship between Discord and the remainder of the mane 6. I liked the constant back and forth between them.
I don´t see him tormenting Twilight as reverting his development. He has always been doing that such as in Three´s a crowd. Other times he appeared like in Princess Twillight and Twilight´s kingdom the stakes were so high that he had more important things to think about and in `Make new friends` He was distracted by Fluttershy but also didn't care at all about ruining it for Twilight.
I like that Discord and the Mane Six aren't antagonizing each other anymore. That's a dynamic that would have gotten VERY old very fast had it continued, especially since Discord was learning more and more about being a decent person.
If I recall correctly, Discord wanted to give Twilight a chance to have the time to herself, which is why he suggested to the others to not invite her to anything. Making Twilight jealous and teaching her a friendship lesson was a side benefit he hadn't planned, but rolled with once he realized it was happening. He also got a taste of his own medicine at the end, bringing ALL of them closer as friends.
It also makes sense to me that Twilight's Friends don't realize how far down the rabbit hole Twilight is going until the end, and that both sides learned from Cadance' wedding.
But... it's a rather meh episode overall. Kind of funny, but boring, and more interesting for the ending scene where we're in on the joke than the rest of the episode.
Discord tormenting Twilight is not a new thing. He has been doing this before and after this episode (Princess Twilight Sparkle, Three's a Crowd, Twilight's Kingdom, Celestial Advice). Twilight can be seen as the element of order and logic, and Discord is chaos, that's why he's very keen on messing with her, and she's very wary and distrustful of him.
Indeed. I really did like that Discord was able to really push Twilight to her limits. Others are either too weak (Starlight) or too kind (Celestia).
I actually enjoyed this episode. I think everyone feels it's a bad episode because they got frustrated that they didn't get to know what Discord did with the Remane 5 just like Twilight. However, when I watched it I already realized where it was leading so I was not focusing on that and just enjoy how Discord toyed around with Twilight. If you watched this episode and got frustrated that they didn't show what Discord and the Remane 5 did together you fell for the very same trap as Twilight.
I'm not proud of Twilight's choices and portrayal in this episode but I don't blame her for not trusting Discord and for believing him to be nothing but a problem. This is the same guy who wrecks her home, messes with her friendships, and endangers and toys with her life and feelings with glee and no regret. He's never done anything to be friends with her even now. I hate him for it all and he will never be someone I like. In my eyes, he treats Twilight as a torment toy that he can easily take advantage of and that just generates more hate from me. This episode proves that.

It was this episode that made me realize a new aspect of Twilight's character that builds off of her previous aspects.
She's got a huge ego now. Bigger than Rainbow Dash.
We see this even in Season 7, Best Aunt Ever anyone?
It's built off of her worry of failing driving her to insanity. Along with Cadence's breathing trick calming her down she's gotten too complacent with worrying situations, and that's evolved to feeling as if she can't fail because her worrying about failing has evolved to being calm in risk, maybe a bit of realization that things usually work out perfectly, and her successes as a princess, friend, and teacher.
It's an interesting direction for her character, but I can't say I don't miss the down to earth OCD lunatic we fell in love with in the first four seasons. Starlight has filled that role somewhat, but I also like how she's not just Retro Twilight. She's her own character.
Twilight's always had a very large ego. She's just very well raised and taught to not flaunt it. However even in episode 1 she considered herself superior to the town's ponies and felt herself above taking part in their activities. She puts great stock in her relationship with Celestia and her status as Celestia's student.
if i my say something, i was a bit bummed out about this episode, i always wanted to see Discord bond with the other ponies besides Fluttershy, and we do get that... but we dont get to see it, it would have been awesome to see them accept him as a friend

(PS: my favorite costume was 11:44, but the cosplay as ILoveKimPossibleALot is an excellent one too!)

I don’t like that episode because of how discord enjoys pushing Twilight and hurting her feelings...I have a friend that...is kind of like discord to me...in the most hurtful ways so this episode really hit it home for me
Yeah, Discord never did ANYTHING to actually be friends with Twilight. All he ever does when it comes to her is annoy, hurt her physically, emotionally, or mentally, or flat-out endanger her life and anyone else's life so he can watch their misery and annoyance with glee and no remorse for causing it, and he'll use anything, whether magic, her friendships, or even his new friendships to do that. I hate him so much and and I haven't seen anything that proves otherwise. He may not do that to Fluttershy but that doesn't really excuse anything

Defenetly. I love Discord but I didn't particularly like this episode. The only parts I really liked about it was when Discord shrunk when his feelings got hurt, but I always like it when he shrinks cause he looks so adorable and the part with the group laugh and hug. It reminded me of the group hug in the Twilight's Kingdom episode. (my top favorite episode with Discord).

So I saw on tumblr. Typical Lily being wrong for her hatred of everything that's not her.
Actually, it's more about the Brony community in general who don't like Cadence, but Silver is the one that has pointed it out the most. I have no issue with Cadence, but I wouldn't mind if she actually did something.

What I do like about this episode that it captures pretty well how it feels to be surrounded by people with in-jokes you don't get. As a person who'd experienced this numerous times, I appreciate it a lot. You shouldn't let you feelings of being jealous and excluded stop you from making your own in-jokes and moments with your friends. For me it's a great message.

I really like you working together with KP. With many during a colab your powerful personality and charisma somewhat overshadows them but KP is one of the few who truly seems like an equal to you rather than an assistant.

i agree wholeheartedly, and i'm glad to hear KP, a huge Discord fan, more or less agrees. i like to think i can watch episodes objectively even if i'm one of the only people on earth who doesn't like Discord. this episode handles its moral in a really poor way, and just emphasizes everything i DON'T like about Discord. i agree it would have been a lot better if we SAW why the characters suddenly liked him, what the jokes were, etc. seeing the whole thing fron Twilight's perspective, it just overemphasizes Discord's "meanspirited, annoying pest" side.
You're aren't alone in your opinion. Everything Discord does just gives me reason to hate him.
This episode, although not done very well, still hits home pretty close for me. I've been in Twilight's shoes way too often, and it's not that I'm introverted, it's that often times I want to do things that others don't want to do, and when I do invite others to do something together, they either forget or something comes up. It's at a point where I've come to think that the only way I CAN hang out with anyone is to be invited and anything else will end in disappointment.
Discord has always been my least favorite character. And this episode did nothing to change my opinion on that.

This episode for some reason, came to my mind while watching an episode of the Ducktales reboot, specifically "The Beagle Birthday Massacre!". I think it did what this episode of pony did wrong or is hated in a good way. While Twilight & Spike are lost & more likely never learn what happened, Webby was sort of in a similar position but it feels more satisfying close to the end when she did it herself and we the audience get to see it. I wonder, why is this rarely talked about?

One thing about Twilight that I really enjoyed that seems to have been abandoned entirely is her scientific side. Twilight is more than books she is about knowledge and her mindset comes from science. She doesn't want to accept something if she can't understand it. I want to see more of that about Twilight being scientific and knowledgeable.
It's what made her so relatable to a science nerd like myself. It's the main reason "Feeling Pinkie Keen" made such a tremendous impact on me because they really nailed how a scientist thinks.
I think the last time was with Moondancer and I loved that. Show her using advanced magic and having deep knowledge. If it can be accused of being "technical jargon" then so be it. I just feel it's a big part of her character that is never touched upon anymore.
It's a big reason I enjoyed "It's about Time" so much as Twilight's scientific self was in full view and I wish we had another episode like that. Maybe also involving Starlight where they have to solve some kind of scientific problem or that Twilight hits an impasse in her research.

Hi again! I was giving this another watch and felt like adding some new thoughts about the episode.
Like you, I was glad to see that Discord could get along with others when they gave him a chance (even if most of it happened off-screen). The negativity between Twilight and Discord was a bit saddening though.
It might have been more interesting to see Twilight wrongfully accusing Discord of using mind magic in Season 4 instead of Season 5. In an alternate version of "Twilight's Kingdom", Twilight realizing she misjudged Discord could have been part of the test she needed to pass to open the Chest of Harmony. Twilight could have earned the last chest key by making amends with Discord and properly befriending him. There would have been a lack of cool fight scenes due to Tirek's absence in this scenario, but he still could have shown up later.
Oh some many references, Doctor insano, aggretsuko, Frankenstein, another great review Silver...though speaking of shipping, does anyone want to know what KP was doing in Antony's room before she review bombed?

Silver Quill, this review of yours was PERFECT to me. It had everything I love about the brony analysts and more: live-action Antony C, cameos by FireBrand and Finn the Pony, hilarious sketches, an excellent co-analyst in ILoveKimPossibleALot, plenty of good reference humor (Pennywise Silver is best Silver), the ability to turn what I consider a lackluster episode into something quite interesting, and Best of all...THE FOCUS ON DISCORD. It's been quite a long time since your last review, but the wait was more than worth it. Continue to be awesome, Hippogriff of Hilarity!

If it takes long to make a after the fact than it's a fine script and well animated quality with fine quality content.
I may not be the friend type as infj but it's difficult to struggle in real life since mostly in my school, people always demonitize introverted as they say extroverted is the dominat personality.
As for this episode i've waited it's great to see familair faces and some entertaining gags and great analysis.
