I’m starting to see why they’re so popular. I know it’s kinda obvious but I think this is the byword for reliable and that really is the number one thing people look for. Uk viewere here. Thanks for the channel, not may focusing on used cars, so great to see. I bought a 2018 one of these to replace a 2009 mk II mazda 3. Gorra be honest, I miss the mazda's driving, but not it's issues (engine seals, corrosion, brake calipers, kneock / air sensors). In comparison to the mazda, this thing handles like a tug. It's very front heavy and the 1.2 manual has very noticable turbo lag, which makes pulling out in town frustrating, add to that it's very much less than stellar performance even when the turbo finally kicks in. You find yourself waxing nostaligic for old naturally aspirated, predictable power performance, more so than expected.I'd say the trurbo kicks in at mid band rather than low band. The variable valve was fun and predictable in the Mazda, but since it was a ford design, I tried to stay out of it. However, it still had enough grunt to pull away from stand still into traffic, with confidence, unlike the toyota. The old Mazda 3 was a fun car to drive though, especially in the twisties where I could put many more expensive german brands to shame, and the mpg between the two is not as great as I had hoped (it's around an extra 5mpg for the toyota, and you have to drive like a granddad, the car wont really let you do otherwise). Plus I really miss the cabin of the Mazda, proper knobs and buttons with dual zone climate contol (that leaked). I could operate everything without taking my eyes off the road, unlike to Toyota. It also looked better and was betetr designed egonomically. I could reach the streeing wheel with both arms, resting both elbows, one on the door rest, and the other on the centre console. Unlike the Toyota where you can only rest one the centre conole cos the door rest is too low down. So why did I buy one over a similarly priced civic, mazda or seat? It's because I can magically find the lemon in any car lot and buy it, and I'm hoping toyota relaibility, or at least it's new extended warranty, will let me buy a used car that doesn't cost the best part of a grand in maintenance and repairs every year. 10 years from original registration, rolling, as long as it's serviced by a main dealer every year, this is applying to any toyota bought from anywhere (UK). Hopefully that pays off in the long run. As it is, I can live with the car, it's comfy enough to sit in, and it's not the worst car I have driven. The uk spec ones have more features as standard, but smaller engines if your not choosing the hybrid. Worth noting though, the catalytic converters for the hybrid and automatic engines are frequently stolen, but you can buy an optional security brace to deter this.

Modern Mazda3s since the Ford partnership thankfully ended have been extremely reliable. Anything from the 3rd gen 2013 BM is great as it isn’t based on a Ford Focus. I drive one myself, it’s a great car - just as reliable as a Corolla but more fun to drive with a nicer interior as you said. I don’t think you should fear Mazda anymore but I understand how a negative experience like that would put someone off - but you were basically driving a Ford so Ford reliability was to be expected.

Hi all, Toyota owner past twenty years. Three Prius and a Corolla hybrid (2017). Runs the drive train as Prius. The secret is stick to six monthly servicing or 10,000 kilometres if your a high mileage driver. Don’t get seduced by annual servicing, new or especially second hand. The problems become worse and this is proven by our experience with the Prius and Corolla. Both are over five years old, the Corolla 111000 kilometres. The twice yearly servicing and hybrid drive train mean 100% reliability with no major repairs or breakdowns and avoids oil burning issues at 100000 kilometres plus. 10:30 The stepdaughter has the Corolla and we still have the Gen4 Prius. Volkswagen Passat here lol relating heavily to your words. I wish I never met her. 🥲 Looking at one of these tomorrow, I'm pretty much sold already just on the reliability aspect because of how badly VW has burned me lol
Also known as the 2016-2018 Scion iM/ Toyota Corolla iM in North America (from 2017 because Scion was dissolved in 2016). All the models there came pretty much fully loaded, all you could do was to pick your colour and transmission choice, as well as some dealer installed options.
A bit of a boring but sensible choice, I had a 2012 model it was a fantastic 2nd car/runabout. Never gave any trouble, I would buy another one in a heartbeat. Great review as always mate
I am looking to buy a hatch or small wagon. I love the reliability of Toyota's and I love Corolla especially. But a deal breaker is that I do camp frequently and it has to be able to tow a small 6x 4 trailer with kayaks/bikes/camping gear. I have to say.... I love your channel. Thanks
Great little car does most things without hassles 1st generation still holds its own against other firm competition Mazda, Mitsubishi,Nissan and Hyundai Reliability is in my experience a priority Corolla serves well.
Crazy how only a few years ago I would've been able to afford a 3 year old one with low kms for the same price of a 10 year old one now with 100,000kms+
I've been driving I've of these recently and I have a couple of observations. 1. The engine sounds a lot rougher than I would expect from Toyota 2. It uses heaps more fuel than I would expect. They both might be something to do with the CVT making sure it's never in the right gear, I don't know. I talked to the mechanic and he said that's pretty normal.
Have owned three. They've all been CVT since around 2009 and I tow up to 1000kg occasionally so sad to say will be buying a Mazda next as they have proper autos.
My min has the hybrid wagon, i hate to go anywhere in it because in 6’7 and has to dit in the back.. my head has to tilt to the side and ive got zero headroom and its very hard to get in and out of in the back bacause my feet gets stuck in the door opening. Shes otherwise very happy with it and the only thing she had to go to the mechanic with it exept oil changes is the tmps sensors

Just decided to keep my 2014 corolla accent sport because I have looked for months to find something that would make me part it. So I updated the head unit to get andriod auto and I'm keeping her
My mum has a 2014 ascent sport too and it's a bit rough like the rear windshield wiper fell off.. Anyway apart from that and the front right speaker going out sometimes it's good
There's a lot of Corolla Fielder wagon hybrids also coming into Australia as grey imports - what are your thoughts of buying that used vs a local Corolla? Would insurance costs for grey imports and parts cost more than purchasing a locally delivered Corolla? Regards.
The Corolla has a launch gear that is separate from the CVT. I think that’s the reason it has some indecision in the transmission at low speeds. The Corolla has a full size spare wheel!
Whats your Corolla fuel consumption. I got a 2013 Corolla Levin SX Hatch, live in inner sydney area and only travel around 15km every few days and getting 10l/100km. Wondering if thats too high.
Fuck yes I have a 2015 SX Manual Hatch....It's still like fucking new. My other vehicle is a 2013 Land Cruiser 70 Series. The 2 most reliable Modern Cars ever built
I own a 2016 model since new, being a petrol head, this car is boring as F........(mind you I drive a Renault RSS265 as daily, this one is for weekend family drive). However, over the last 9 years/90000KM , I replaced nothing other than standard service item and a set of tyre (and its because I felt the original set losing its grip becasue of age with at least 30% tread left ), and for driving your family, the CVT actually feels good when you keep the pace right. For a point A to B car, I can only think of the Camry being better one except you pay more.
l have a geriatric 1987 SE Limited 1.5 sedan l bought for $750 way back in 2011,,,, well what can l say aside from "only a fool would send one of these old girls to the wreaker",,,,,, such a good wee reliable/fuel efficient bomb and now even better because its value is slowly climbing.
We got one of these as a hire car for a week touring down south in NZ. Super basic and utilitarian is how I’d describe it. It was like going back to the cars we used to have in the 90s. It did the job of going from A to B though so all good on that front. One thing that surprised us was how microscopic the boot space was. Definitely not the car to tour in with luggage. That’s my fault for being too tight on the hire car rates haha! Luckily we pack light and with some spill over into the back seats with the kids we could just fit it all in. But even a load of groceries for the family you’d be struggling. There’s better options out there, especially when you pay that (unjustified?) premium price of the Toyotas (in NZ that is). I found driving this car like pushing round a dead donkey. No power anywhere, dead feel on everything, man it was bad. But if driving is not your thing, and let’s face it that seem to like 90% of the population nowadays, it’s fine. Does the job I guess. “Meh” is the word that encompassed the experience on that one I thought. 99% reliable for sure, and if that’s your ultimate priority then go for it, but… meh.
There is a 2013 corolla ascent sport hatchback here at a local dealer with 118,000 kilometers and they want $14,995 for it right now and it's in average cosmetic condition with many marks, scratches and stone chips along with curb rash on all four mag rims. used car prices are stupid high for 9 or 10 year old vehicles that look like they have been to hell and back.
God, a few years ago my mum got a pretty good condition Corolla (2014 and in average condition now) but it was 8,000 which compared to that is good. But wouldn't find one for that cheap anymore unless it's destroyed.
Honestly, they're all pretty good. Obviously newer ones will be safer and more fuel efficient but there is more to go wrong. This generation might be the sweet spot. - AK
@@JamaicanMeCrazy Yes and that is due to a new car shortage, and subsequently used car shortage since the pandemic. Nothing to do with the Corolla in particular.
300km is literally the maximum millage for most of normal cars. Unless the car is serviced like clockwork then it should belong in the junkyard imo. Just avoid it mate.
I own one and it's good I've have no issues other than the occasional confusion that it gets off the lights. Sometimes if I give it a punt it gets stuck in a rev range but that's not an issue either
It doesn’t. Toyotas infotainment systems are pretty archaic and it doesn’t help that they dragged their feet in getting CarPlay and Android Auto. For example my car, a Mazda3 that was launched around the same time as this gen of Corolla in 2013/14 can be retrofitted with CarPlay into the default system.
They’d be a steal, given how much tech and safety features (as well as far better LED headlights for night driving) they pack. The oldest of those are 2018 models so depreciation should whack them a bit.
@@waynekieft4952 Lol how so, my 2014 has been flawless and that mirrors experiences from any used car review you can read online, it’s equally reliable as a Corolla but drives better. You can even watch ReDrivens video of it m.ruclips.net/video/9GCkAhaiKkE/видео.html
Sure should. Toyota, as boring as your nana telling stories of the war, but just like nana you can trust her, she is always on your side and willnever let you down. Ex owner of 3 human generation 2005 Rav 4, 350,000k's + all original and never stoped, rattled not.

I have a 2014 corolla with 270,000km and mechanically have only ever replaced a water pump. The handling is a bit average, best to run decent continental tyres.
i30 because of the space at the back is nearly 100 litres more than corolla and there is a full size spare tyre which corolla does not have. i30 has annual servicing not 6 months like this one and i30 has more options than corolla for more affordable price and has no faults recorded from the Australian government car recall compared to corolla because of the faulty world wide airbags. Get a i30 because you are buying what you need and performance don't buy for reputation and reselling it because you need a car to do the stuff you need. i30 parts are competitive and affordable and less break down than a corolla in the 21st century so be aware
I've had three 1990 Corolla Secas over the course of about 20 years, they are as exciting as peeling paint, but - nothing EVER went wrong with any of them, if you slap some nice rims on them they actually looks pretty slick and if/when the kids gouged the trim - no one cared. The carbie engines were horrible, fuel injected much better.. in fact I'm starting to talk myself into buying a well-looked after one for about $3000, slapping a Levin engine in it, Celica box, some rims, Michelin Pilots, struts and an exhaust - for $15,000 you've got a retro sleeper... hmmmm.... lemme think..
I’ve owned 2 Corollas in the past, when I still lived back home in Sydney. Amazing cars, absolutely awesome. I’m looking at getting Corolla number 3 here in the UK, but can only afford one from around 2005/06. Apparently the European Corollas burn vast amounts of oil as they get old due to a bad piston ring design that was rectified in mid-2005. If this could be verified that would be brilliant! My current car (2003 Avensis) is burning oil faster than I can afford to buy it! I don’t want a repeat of this dodgey Toyota engine. It’s going to be sold for parts soon :(

I bought a 2013 ZR Levin manual one year ago with 150,000. Now has 190,000kms, no issues. I service it myself every 10,000kms .best car I've had..... But I do miss my oldGZ20 soarer 😢
I own a 2011 Corolla Sedan which I bought back in 2012. I am glad that still no major problem and using it as a second car!.
Bought an early 2015 Toyota Auris Hybrid (I'm in Europe) today as a first car. 62k miles for 18k AUD, lots of options and well kept. Thanks for your awesome videos, they helped a lot deciding.
Congrats Bart! We're wrapped that the video helped and thanks you for watching and your kind words.
Yeah Thanks to you guys I've sold my '22 Ranger Wildtrak and purchased a '09 Prius...Couldn't be more happier! :)))))@@ReDriven
had 3 golfs nothing but costs just bought a 2014 ascent sport never going back to vw
Volkswagen Passat here lol relating heavily to your words.
I wish I never met her. 🥲
Looking at one of these tomorrow, I'm pretty much sold already just on the reliability aspect because of how badly VW has burned me lol
Thanks
Your vids are on point, I am impressed,,,watchubg from Cape Town!
1. The engine sounds a lot rougher than I would expect from Toyota
2. It uses heaps more fuel than I would expect.
They both might be something to do with the CVT making sure it's never in the right gear, I don't know.
I talked to the mechanic and he said that's pretty normal.
Nice Seiko! XD.......also fantastic review! Cheers
Cheers mate and thank you.
Have owned three. They've all been CVT since around 2009 and I tow up to 1000kg occasionally so sad to say will be buying a Mazda next as they have proper autos.
Great video. I got a 2021 Corolla ZR Hybrid. Toyota’s are great!
Thanks mate
Excellent car for daily nothing fancy and does the job. Sure it's abit 'boring' but also got a S2000 to fill that
thanks man, i was looking at these recently to possible purchase.
The Toyota Corolla Hatchback in the are Scion iM ( 2015 - 2016 ), Toyota Corolla iM ( 2016 - 2018 ) in the States \ North American market. The Scion iM \ Toyota Corolla iM replaced the Toyota Matrix, Pontiac Vibe, Scion xB in the States \ North American market. The Scion iM \ Toyota Corolla iM never getting the facelift in the States \ North American market but, they skipped the facelift to the redesigned for the States \ North American market. The Scion iM \ Toyota Corolla iM had a 1.8 L in the States \ North American market. Also, the Scion iM \ Toyota Corolla iM didn't having any hybrid model in the States \ North American market.
Regards.
Whole internet is saying to either buy a toyota or honda. My question is why does it need service every six months?
Funny, exact the same model here but it is called Auris. The newer generation is called a Corolla again.
The storage space you said you can store cotton buds. My parents used to have a corolla & they used that for parking metre money.
Or coins for the car wash...
5:57 I store my driveway gate remote 🔑🔐 and some credit cards I never use 😂
Brilliant use of that storage, wished I'd thought of it!
Just bought a brand new ZR Hybrid Corolla here in NZ. $38k. It's not bad but not much storage. Partner bought it not me laugh out load
These have a massive problem with Paint flaking off them especially in white.
Bloody great reviews . 🎉🎉
l have a geriatric 1987 SE Limited 1.5 sedan l bought for $750 way back in 2011,,,, well what can l say aside from "only a fool would send one of these old girls to the wreaker",,,,,, such a good wee reliable/fuel efficient bomb and now even better because its value is slowly climbing.
The orange and white cars behind the mechanic! 😍
Great vid mate, lookin for my Mum, will pass on this vlog.
Redriven Can you do a review on the 2016 Camry Alise
Hi Peter. We sure can. We have the next few weeks cars already booked but I'll throw it on the list and try to find one to review for you.
And a Mondeo! (MD or MC)
What era corollas are the best in terms of reliability easiness to service/fix? Early 2000’s?
Honestly, they're all pretty good.
Obviously newer ones will be safer and more fuel efficient but there is more to go wrong.
This generation might be the sweet spot. - AK
@@ReDriven Thanks mate - yes, after the 'sweet spot'!
Looking at 2013 accent sport model 68000kms 16999?
I'd love to get one in sydney but it seems the price of the corolla market is so highly inflated.. ):
There's a reason for that.
@@JamaicanMeCrazy Yes and that is due to a new car shortage, and subsequently used car shortage since the pandemic. Nothing to do with the Corolla in particular.
Reliable cheap to run great resale spare parts are almost available at he local 7-11, just a little boring but absolutely trouble free
looking at buying 2013 levin zr manual 90,000km for 17K? Thoughts people?
Yep, do it!
Same car in Europe. Called the Auris.
Can you please do suzuki ignis as well?
Does anyone know how reliable or unreliable the non-hybrid CVT is?
Very reliable. If it was problematic you’d hear about it (*cough* Nissan CVTs).
Why is some of this exact car written toyota Auris?
Failed marketing strategy. Nothing more. It's still the exact same car.
I bit confused to buy used 2014 toyota corolla at $8k AUD which has 300k km. Should i buy this one or not? help needed. thanks
300km is literally the maximum millage for most of normal cars. Unless the car is serviced like clockwork then it should belong in the junkyard imo. Just avoid it mate.
@@manhhahlu actually it is 300k km = 3 lakhs kilometer. Should i buy or not? thanks
@@samratchapagain4804 better an older with less mileage
What are the CVTs like in these models?
I own one and it's good I've have no issues other than the occasional confusion that it gets off the lights. Sometimes if I give it a punt it gets stuck in a rev range but that's not an issue either
It does what it supposed to. Reliable transport. CVT problems are easy to get around. Buy a manual😂
I'd have one or a Honda Civic.....or even a Mazda 3
Can you do one of these videos for Hyundai Elantra thanks
How does the navigation work on this?
We (Aust) never got the wagon mate (sadly) …
Idk they looked kinda frumpy 😬 Toyota wagons have always looked the least proportional compared to wagons from literally any other brand.
Can you please do a review on the latest shape Corolla, looking at buying one of those or Mazda 3 latest shape
Sure thing Kerrie. We'll try to track one down to review. - AK
@@ReDriven thank you so much ! by the way your very entertaining with your reviews
They’d be a steal, given how much tech and safety features (as well as far better LED headlights for night driving) they pack. The oldest of those are 2018 models so depreciation should whack them a bit.
Mazdas are junk! They look good, nice to drive but thats about it!
We didn’t get the wagon in Australia
You're 100% right mate, I stuffed up there, sorry about that. I had the previous generation in my head.
Sure should. Toyota, as boring as your nana telling stories of the war, but just like nana you can trust her, she is always on your side and willnever let you down. Ex owner of 3 human generation 2005 Rav 4, 350,000k's + all original and never stoped, rattled not.
Could you try review a corolla sportivo? Unicorn of a car. They are about as quick as an integra type r.
100%! A dear friend of mine had one and it was awesome. We'll try to find one to review Tony. - AK
I’m about to get a 2014 ascent sport for $4k.
It would be very useful to have an app for redriven Cheat sheets.
Working on it mate. - AK
What do you think about Toyota Corolla 1997? I've just bought it for AUD 2600 for 300k exactly and wonder if it is a stupid decision.... Thanks in advance, and I've subscribed :)
Keep the services regular and it should be bulletproof. Awesome car, congrats. - AK
@@ReDriven Thanks so much!
Don't worry, after I put A K&N filter in one of these, I expect 150 horsepower and 200nm of tourqe
Best cars Toyota's ❤
That's the reason i am buying its a small hatch :)
I did buy one today mate
That's awesome! You'll bloody love it, superb thing. And congrats!!
I have a 2014 corolla with 270,000km and mechanically have only ever replaced a water pump.
The handling is a bit average, best to run decent continental tyres.
Not sure torque figure for 1.8 is accurate in your spec sheets tiger wise really excellent information
Oh really? I'll check it out, thanks for making us aware.
It's a Buy any day of the week
It looks a bit interesting now with the same dull and uninspiring drive.the cvt is horrible
i30 because of the space at the back is nearly 100 litres more than corolla and there is a full size spare tyre which corolla does not have. i30 has annual servicing not 6 months like this one and i30 has more options than corolla for more affordable price and has no faults recorded from the Australian government car recall compared to corolla because of the faulty world wide airbags. Get a i30 because you are buying what you need and performance don't buy for reputation and reselling it because you need a car to do the stuff you need.
i30 parts are competitive and affordable and less break down than a corolla in the 21st century so be aware
Do you recommend the hybrid??
At the right price yes if you do enough km to justify the extra
Not quite a Camry, but also not quite the price
pls review Mazda 3 next haha
They did… m.ruclips.net/video/9GCkAhaiKkE/видео.html
Renault and golf are crap greetigs from Germany
But the steering wheel is on the wrong side.😎🇺🇸
Japanese car so according to where it's made it's entirely on the correct side. 😜
It’s going to be sold for parts soon :(
Bought a 2014 Levin sx for 13500 used it for 2 years sold it for 17k 🤣🤣🤣
Great car but cvt is rubbish
the cheat sheet is no longer available for me
Oh really? Sorry about that, we'll try to sort it now.
