He was def a trade for playoff match ups. JoVal is nice but Marc opened up options for spacing with the 4 other guys along with his passing. Marc also made Vuc a nonfactor in the Magic series (but regardless the Magic were a nonfactor anyway), held his own against Embiid (which the Sixers leaned on JImmy Buckets harder) and of course battled under the post against Brook Lopez. Plus you knew Marc was going all out knowing this could be his last shot making the playoffs with a squad that can go deep possibly into the Finals. When teams know they are guaranteed to go deep to the playoffs, being able to win lineup matchups is what decides if the team can go as far as the Conference Finals or even in the NBA Finals.
Marc Gasol saved the raps. They were a hair away from losing the to 76ers and bucks, but Gasol's defense against Embiid and Giannis pushed his team passed em
I won't say he saved the Raps (The Raps had no business in the Finals without Kawhi to begin with) but he improved those playoff match ups tremendously. I don't think Nurse would have as much confidence against the Sixers matchup if he still had JoVal against Embiid. And if Embiid could have his way in the middle while Jimmy Butler doing his damage, that series definitely changes dramatically.
Pshh Marc Gasol? More like getting Jeremy Lin was what clenched it for the raps. They didn't lose a single game in the playoffs when he was put in and he only needed less than 1 min.
Lol! Poor poor Jeremy. Too bad, I had dinner with him and a mutual friend once. He’s such a down to earth, nice, all around normal and easy going dude. He got paid well to do something he loves so I don’t feel too too bad for him. Very funny comment though!
Come on Pau Gasol got the Lakers to the finals the year he got traded and got two more chips after that. Three straight finals and two titles? How is that trade only briefly mentioned smh
Kyle PLEASE make more dime drop content. Breakdown prospects, rookies, breakout guys, guys regressing, guys who haven't developed (ben simmons). your stuff is the best, best voice, jokes, footage, comps. everything!
It was cuz melo was being a drama queen and just wanted the NY spotlight so bad. If he really wanted to win then he would have not let his future team trade away a bunch of pieces. I will say though, melo has changed for the better now and has revived his career.
Melo is now and always has been selfish. Whined his way out of Denver, screwed over the Knicks by forcing a trade instead of signing in the off season knowing the team would be better. Passed up going to Chicago to team up with Rose/Noah and the rest of that strong Bulls team. Whined and pouted in OKC/Houston because he couldn't accept coming off the bench even tho he was on strong teams and he could have anchored the 2nd unit on both. Every opportunity he had to win he made things about himself. Plays 0 defense. Plus he's been a walking black hole for most of his career. Pass em the ball and ya never see it again. He chose $ and ego over winning. And he will retire with 0 rings because of it.
@@roboninja3194 Um New York didn't have to make that trade to appease Melo. They are not owned by Melo and instead are ran by an impatient, incompetent front office.
Another good shot in the arm was the Magic getting Rafer Alston after Jameer Nelson got hurt. Didn't win it all but we wouldn't have gotten past Cleveland and Boston to make it to the finals without him
Umm how do you barely mention Pau Gasol? You talked more about the Marc Gasol trade? When Pau joined the Lakers they were like a 5-8 seed type of team, because of him they went to the championship that first year and then won the next two. He might be the greatest midseason trade pick up of all time.
Bro RaSheed Wallace was huge in that era with the Pistons. Cometo think of it that whole Eastern Conference was amazing to watch. Pacers with Reggie and Jermaine O'Neal, 76ers with A.I and Mutumbo, Nets with Kidds, Van Horn etc. Sorry about the rant but that was the time I started watching the NBA and I was infatuated
How did Marc Gasol going to the Raptors get a segment but Pau to the Lakers only get mentioned in passing? It's not even close which one of those midseason trades was more significant. One resulted in a single Finals Win. The other resulted in 3 straight Finals appearances, 2 Finals wins, and 5 years of contending. When you think midseason trade, most fans think of the Pau trade.
Doug Janicke nah he would of messed up Prince development and messed up the teams chemistry refusing to guard anyone and hogging the ball, wade or even bosh would of been a better fit
Don't know why it isn't a bigger part of this video but I'd argue Pau Gasol is the best mid-season trade of ALL TIME. The Lakers immediately went to the Finals the same year they got him (from being 7th in the West and knocked out the first round the year before) and then 2 consecutive championships after. "FOR KWAM-EY BROWN!" - Stephen A Smith
Clippers traded Blake Griffin mid season and got better then traded Tobias Harris the next season mid season and got better and with a lot of those pieces they got in the trades they used for pg which got kawhi long story short they work
Those are the times where a mid-season trade arguably allowed for a team to win a championship. Many similar trades happen every year, where contenders try to improve, but not many ultimately pan out.
Jazz have done it every year with the Cavaliers for like the past 3 years. We get significantly better after each trade. Jae Crowder, Kyle Korver, Jordan Clarkson. It's like the Cavs are our D-League team lol
How did they just gloss over the Pau trade? The Lakers went from a first round playoff team to making three straight finals and winning two titles. It’s the easily the most impactful mid-season trade.
Personally think Andrew Bogut to the Warriors is an all-time underrated trade. He was a perfect fit for them. Protect the rim catch lobs grab rebounds. Simple. That sparked the whole Warriors run IMO.
I feel like the 2018 Cavs are a good example too. They got rid of some of their age and brought in some players that seemed to care a lot more. Really seemed to change the attitude of the team. Obviously Lebron was incredible, especially in the playoffs, but guys like Larry Nance Jr shouldn’t be forgotten
Trading Marc away was not nearly as lopsided as the one for Pau. To be fair I wouldn't have really guessed it at the time, but Valanciunas is lowkey balling out in Memphis.
@@michaelhaydenbell Its not Memphis is playoff bound anytime soon so they can use all the help they can get, even for JoVal in the post for a cheap cost. But when Memphis finally gets it together and are looking for the 5th best player on their team to solve matchups, best believe JoVal will be traded out. He couldn't even be the 5th best player in a championship Raps team as Marc earned that spot well.
Yeah just ask Kobe what he thinks of Mid-Season trades. Getting Pau made the Lakers go from a team that was going to lose in the first or second round of the playoffs to a team that went to the finals 3 years in a row.
It's 2023 and we'll see where the Lakers, Mavs, Nets and Suns end up with one of the biggest midseason trade merry-go-rounds in history or at least decades.
Unpopular opinion here, but I believe the NBA (and only the NBA) shouldn’t allow in season trading. When you only have 5 people on the court per team, one player can make such a huge impact on that team. For example last year if La does end up trading for Anthony Davis the whole season turns out different
I want Dallas to get someone good like Andre or Darren. Loving them Mavs right now. Wanna see them shock the world. Them or the Greek. But then Bucks need to help him because he is absurd.
If raps didnt get marc gasol to lock up embiid then they lose second round. Clutch underated trade by Messiah Ujiri
Gasol made Vucevic look like a child in the first round too
FACTS all I can say
Imo the second most important player behind Kawhi last year.
He was def a trade for playoff match ups. JoVal is nice but Marc opened up options for spacing with the 4 other guys along with his passing.
