- It's no secret that LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and James Harden have been among the best players in the NBA this season, but why exactly have they been so dominant? In this video, The Ringer's J. Kyle Mann breaks down how the playmaking abilities of these four players set them apart from the rest of the league.

gotta get any Luka content I can during his injury
Tim luckily it isn’t that bad though so we’ll see him play again pretty soon
This is the best basketball breakdown I have ever seen
Sorry for u. This is a good breakdown though
This and Thinking Basketball are my fave rn.
If you think this is good (and it is), go back and look up his 'Dime Drop' videos
It’s a great video, for sure
i think 3 years from now trae young is literally going to break this guy's mind with how elite he will be....I have him averaging 40 and 12 by then on 46% from 3 and 93% fts and 52% overall
Arvydas Sabonis is the biggest 'what-if,' IMO. As a basketball fan it kills me that by the time he got to the NBA his knees and ankles were already wrecked from overtraining with the Soviet team.
I go Rose(youngest MVP far from his prime still playing in a big, slow era) or Walton beating the possinle GOAT Kareem and not being able to continue. Even Oden just being his size/athletic ability post Shaq and pre Joel/KAT/Joker etc. Essentially only having prime Dwight as big man competition.
I do get Sabonis I just think he would have had to face an extreme level of competition. Shaq, Hakeem, David, Ewing, Zo, Deke, Brad etc. The 3 elite of the era were ridiculous.
William Jackson I’ve put a lot of research into Sabonis after his son was drafted by my team. He imo after watching the way he played and how he did against good competition and how freaky he was I would say he would be better than everyone except Shaq and Olajuwon during that era. He was quite literally A 7’1 300 lb Nikola Jokic who was an incredible defender.
Carson Wells he was 7’3 bud
@@Integra00 being better than David is as impossible as Hakeem and Shaq. Easiest the most athletic and best shooting of the three. With DPOY worthy play. I too know Sabonis well. I would say his vision is on par with the other greats. Joker certainly takes advantage of the eras spacing with his vision, a low scoring high post passer would be unheard of back then. Probably the last was Russell. Webber and KG are similar but they are also scorers taking advantage of the angles created from their attack. All im saying Sabonis would have to show a level of threat i dont know he had to be what i think people imagine if he were to conform to the eras style, low post passing doesnt yeild out consistent high assist games. But he also could easily have considering his frame and skillset. So yea much like a eras Joker with his frame and passing being dominant traits and while being complete not dominant enough in any particular scoring style(not the roll man like Karl, shooter like Dirk, post scorer like Hakeem/Shaq, floor runner like or giant triple threat position like DROB. But enough everywhere).
@@williamjackson5421 Great call on Greg Oden. Injuries hit him so hard, so young. Kinda hard to feel sorry for him after he got drunk and punched a lady in the face, but nevertheless he belongs high on any list of NBA what-if's.
Funny how when I was in high school as the tallest person on my team everyone including my coach expected me to play with my back towards the basket, now playmaking bigs are “normal”
I had a similar thought the other day. I was a slow-footed, lateraling deficient 6-7 White guy who could do very little on the court; excepts for one thing, SHOOT. If I had been born 20 years later, I probably would have played in college. Maybe even a big school. As it was, I was always discouraged from even taking shots in games. I was only used to set picks and rebound. I had to get my own tryouts with NAIA schools after high school.
Yea It wasn't normal but if you were athletic enough, I remember like 10 years ago at least guys coming out of high school playing PG at 6-7 6-8, Terrence Jones is one. There were guys with the skills that were improperly used.
S L true I was more of a 2 way rim runner that could go coast to coast off the rebound with a decent 3 but if I made one mistake I wouldn’t hear the end of it until hell froze over
Just think.... Kristaps porzingis spent his entire youth playing the point
It depends on how your coach saw the game I guess. If they saw the game as positionless, they would value overall spacing concept than adhering to specific roles for positions. But if you always flashed the ability to make a good decision with the ball and put it on the floor, your coach would let you do it. Much like how ADs coaches as hew grew taller didn't stop him from playing like a perimeter player as he started playing the game as a guard.
Ben Simmons: Am I a joke to you?
Yes. Yes you are.

Goosebumps thinking about Bird in today’s NBA
Same.
Oh my
Good God was he so fucking smooth. If a time machine was ever created, I'd want the greats to play ball in the 2010s and 2020s NBA.
He would mentally destroy the friends club guys the league is full of now. 😂
Its kinda obvious. He'll get overlooked cuz he's a white guy and he's not super athletic nor did he own a great wingspan for his height. But some team will LOVE his BBIQ and will have players to play at a high level with him. The real kicker are those ESPN highlights where he talks all the trash and asking the other team who can defend him and just sinking game clinching daggers in opponents' faces. Enough mental damage that some young players just won't keep up and for some veterans, their egos may get shattered getting shown up with a white guy whose bball game came out of the 50s.

Russel westbrook: *crying inside*
Sad but true
@@owengamer9926 not sad at all. Russ is a beast without the 3
Skye Walker ya but Russ would be a more respected player if he could shoot
Two years later and Jokic is the unicorn standard to what a big playmaker is all about. Even when it comes to firing passes from different angles and timings that the rest of the players on the court didn't account for. Its kind of had a ripple effect as other teams have hung on to their established ones (Heat, Wolves, Kings via a trade) but other teams have started their own projects to develop theirs (Rockets, Thunder).
Congratulations to the first American to ever pronounce Dončić correctly!!! Great video also!
Ivan Rojc I know it’s the right way to pronounce it, but it sounds like shit so...
That guy got dropped at 1:29
Surprised that didn't get commented upon in the video
he got hit by an invisible force
Just like the 3 ball, dual threat wings as the best primary arent going anywhere. You can trace it back to rule changes(and somewhat analytics, tho analytics by nature are reactionary. Spotting a fact rather than setting it). Wings by nature are just giants with extreme skill and athletic ability, already a good option to build around. But post 04 with zone being allowed(no illegal defense) Lebron and co. style was perfect to drive and kick. In this time you see the rise of scoring point guards as well(1. They saw Lebron. 2. They still were far and away more skilled than your average wing). Then the freedom of movement rule combined with Curry's success and Houston analytical approach encouraged the increase and skill of 3pt shooting(that particular skillset at that, since league 3pt shooting % increased dramatically without FT shooting doing the same). You add the Thunders campaign for Russ boxing out to get your playmaker the ball as soon as possible the rise of triple doubles increased even moreso than with Lebron(which was dramatic in itself). You end with a league whose best option is a scoring/passing wing who is kicking out to role players that are valuing their low attempts with a shot worth more. The next step is the big whose adept at passing when coming off a roll/pop(essentially an Amare/Malone who can hit the corner or through a lob at the free throw line besides hitting that shot or xscoring at the rim. Can you imagine a rolling hard Joker passing to a cutter or a pindown if the threat of his scoring was greater?). Tho i could see a widening of the court making the corners as long as the rest bringing back big back to the basket play, without illegal defense the corner defender is immediately up on the post.
Fascinating game. A slight change in rules or a innovative player can change it completely from what you knew just yesterday.
William Jackson basketball, more than any other sport, reminds me so much of the economy. It’s amazing
@@jmass1997 people like to say basketball is an art but I see it as more of a science or math. the improvising part, like what Kyrie can do with the ball in an instant reacting to the defense, is artistic but everything else is a very intricate and thought out scientific game
Dual threat wings have been the best and most versatile players as primary threats for two decades now. Even during the 80's-90's era where HOF bigs were running around and being cornerstones to championship caliber teams. Jordan refined the tactic of being a dominant player who can score with their back behind the basket like a big but extend the range to all the way to the perimeter. So the idea with his talent and ability is to destroy star matchups by beating them. Back down smaller players and drive/slip through bigger ones while attracting double/triple teams and making great decisions with the ball. When rule changes started to favor offenses for perimeter players so it would bring about the advent of small guards like Iverson/Wade/Rose who can attack the hoop at will, odd enough it is the big talented two way wings who continue to feast. Lebron playing from the perimeter optimized the drive and kick to shooters strategy but took years later and a more talented team to show the results for this. At the same time you have guys later like Harden who showed he can also make it work by being absurdly efficient attacking the hoop and getting his shot off the perimeter with like his lethal step back.
Wouldn't making the corners as long as the rest just put the help defense in a harder spot? Even the rotating player would need an extra step to get there. Yes it would be a lower percentage shot than the current corner but you would get more open opportunities. We would have like a ton of open corner 3's(long ones to be fair) or a lot of 2 on 2 plays in the pick and roll. Which players like Luka Harden and Bron would dominate in with no help defense.
J. Kyle Mann makes the flat out best Ringer video content. Keep up the good work.
I missed you Kyle. Please never leave us for more then a week sincerly every NBA fan.
Some of those dimes, though!
This might be a blueprint for superstars, but the bar is crazy high for imitators. You need to have world class scoring, size, handles, playmaking, and passing. The real miracle is that we have 4+ players who are pulling it off.
Oh yeah, ideally you should play D as well. That is one reason why I respect Giannis so much as a player: he is arguably the best in the league on offense and arguably the best in the league on defense. There are players that can just about match his O or his D, but nobody can match him on both. Kawhi is the closest, but he definitely falls short.
This video is insanely useful for guys who think that today's NBA is regressed, people don't play defense, people are soft etc. The game has evolved instead. The basketball from 80-90s is no longer viable for today's game. It's so much harder to play defense now, cause you have 5 people spacing the floor, instead of like 4 people in the paint as in the past.
Yet “aLl HaRdEn dOEs Is ShOoT” is what casuals got to say about him like he isn’t one of the best playmakers in the league.
ITs HiS 20 FrEe ThRoWs A GaMe TBH.
His stats aren't that epic when you take out all his forced foul free throws. He's great almost singularly for that reason.
@@methodsignature Great is subjective because other than the one finals he went to with OKC and ruined with the partying and turnovers. But now has to do a MVP circuit to talk about how great he is. Has a owner who says he's better than Jordan. He forces contact every play, as a fan of basketball it is not only annoying to watch. But he complains in the playoffs, complains when he doesn't get the call and complains when he falls backwards on 3s. But you would think that if he really wanted to be great he wouldn't have had to be benched when the old guys beat the Clippers in the playoffs. What is most iconic Harden playoff moment? I will wait.
Randall Mitchell wtf he’ll be averaging 27ppg with NO free throws. He’s still an amazing playmaker and a good defender within the rockets scheme. Harden is so good yet there is so much hate ppl have to resort to inexplicably stupid arguments to make up narratives on him.
I've literally never seen anyone say this. Everyone who complains about Harden talks about his drawing fouls.

It’s weird to see Luka and Harden here until you remember Luka is 6’7” and Harden is 6’6”.

@@KobesFadeaway no. Luka is 6'7, but harden is 6'5.
I thought luka was 6'8? But harden is 100% 6'5
harden is 6'5 but the reason he and to some extent Luka are able to perform at the level of Lebron and Giannis is that they carry a lot of upper body muscle mass that lets them handle bigger opponents in the paint
@@labibrahman when u ballin like harden is your height automatically go up 1 inch...
great content, love the channel.
Best content on RUclips! Would love a break down of Anthony Edwards soon.
I'm all for offense but I wish the league would go back to letting perimeter defenders play defense...
Blocking foul is one of the rules that's hindering defense. Let the offensive player earn his bucket, don't penalise the defense for getting in his way.
Bring back hand checking
Yea its making these big number meaningless to me. Like I literally don't care when a guy has a historic performance it feels more hallow to me now than just like 3-5 years ago.

I agree , but I have one question:

2015 warriors were a prime example of insane playmaking and execution by everyone on the floor.
The bench also was fcking solid
I’ll be honest this isn’t a hot take, every team wants a person like lebron or Giannis. It’s already at its highest credibility. It’s just that it’s so risky depending on one guy in the draft to come out like that because there are hardly any that can do it so they have to settle with a more traditional line up of 2 backcourt and 3 front court players.
Magic, Larry, Scottie, Michael, Tracy, Grant Hill, both Hardaways, Boris Diaw, and many more would be fun to see in a system in today's game
Dude's scouting about Cunnigham, Edwards and Ball though 👀

This must be the first american made video that actualy pronounced Dončič even close to correct, well done
There is something to be said about smaller guards becoming less and less. Taller playmakers/guards like this mean more overall height on the floor and it makes it harder for shorter players to be effective defenders because more and more they have to guard taller players than themselves.
Couldnt imagine Stockton in this era he'd be incredible
The bench stood up for Roberson @ 1:06😭😭
u said dončić so perfectly tbh
You're so good bro
It's like MAGIC!
I kinda understand why some older folks are missing the 1 one 1 post iso ball at 50%, instead of the pick n roll kick and shoot 3 at 33%
I agree!
Make more videos like this please if possible.
1. Back then they pick smaller guard because they can handle the ball better, usually faster, harder to steal.
2. Now everyone got nice handles, taller guys can pass better, smaller guys are shooting and scoring with their speed and agility. So now smaller guys tend to be a scoring threat while the bigger playmaker find people or make plays.
All that talk of playmaking bigs and not a mention of Jokic? Come on
Ikr that was literally the only disappointing part of this video for me.
Im glad im not the only one with the same sentiment

Luka, Harden, and Giannis will dominate this decade
Now we have Jokic. J Kyle, you should do an update with the 2 time MVP
Amazing content. Even though Bron and Doncic are on another level than Giannis and Harden when it comes to playmaking ability, I get why you chose those 4 as prime examples. We need more of these videos. Would love to see BBallBreakdown work with The Ringer on some stuff. It would be a great fit imo
Bballbreakdown, j kyle mann and thinking basketball are the big three of RUclips bball videos
nope pre 35+ppg Harden was the best playmaker in my opinion it was before he became more a scorer but remember when he had 10+ assists and multiple 8+ apg season. Giannis played some time as PG, but he is taller so he have to be at the post and at the playmaking at the same time so he is for sure lower. But for his post and the big men he is the best with Jokic
@@paquinraino8180 Harden has never had the vision Lebron or Doncic have. He had a system of shooters around him and just could pass it to any of them. Its not always just about the assist average, but more about HOW you dish those assists.
how did you not mention magic johnson when talkin about the old dudes😂
I agree
9:24 what a NASTY play. Rips up the defense and the no look pass at the end to cap it off. I had to go back and watch it like 10 times.
It’s kinda surprising that Jokic wasn’t mentioned ONCE in this video. He’s the best big man facilitator the league has seen yet
Would like to see magic play in today’s era too
i fucking love these videos
Why haven’t someone thought of a all big men line up with max wingspan
In a 3-2 zone
The Bucks do this, and they used to do this to the Warriors, that's why they matched up so well.
Harrison Barnes, Bogut, and Green were their tallest rotational guys. The bucks started MCW, Giannis, Jabari and Brook Lopez which are all towers
You need a perfect storm of personnel with the wingspan, size AND the effort. The Raptors if they wanted to can have that with Ibaka/Siakam/OG Anounuby/Norm Powell (6'10" wingspan)/Lowry along with interchangable parts like Boucher (7'4" wingspan), Gasol and a few others. Its rare enough to find people with length AND talent to use it on offense like Towns or DeAndre Ayton. But its even more rare to find someone with the complete package to play both ends of the floor like Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, etc.
I saw the thumbnail and the first player that i think of is Marc Gasol
i liked how Ben Simmons walked into that brick. lol
Interesting pattern, the players' ages are (as of 7-Dec-2020): 35, 31, 26 and 21. This is a 4, 5, and 5 years difference. so if we assume we don't add Jukic to the list, does it mean every 5 years or so comes this type of a "generational" talent?
I guess if you just ignore every great, short playmaker in history - Nash, CP3, Stockton, etc - it's really easy to make the argument that height leads to superior ability as a playmaker
I'll give you a kidney to give us another dimedrop draft prospect video. Please😭
As a 6"8 High school player I appreciate the game turning to this point
Secret Agent holy shit, as a 5’9 high school player. I’ll hope for a double growth spurt
I think the 2020 draft are bringing 3 types of players including those being LaMelo Ball who are looking to be successful play making scoring wings. So I think players in the future are understanding the value of this play style and may be focusing those kind of talents for the next decade to come.
"LeBron does... Everything” and that's that.
Well he has that flick of a wrist pass that can change at any moment at any direction so that's quite a trait.. Luka usually does 2 hand off-look passes and Giannis does some weird 1 handers that his hand grabs the ball almost like he's playing handball, so I guess there's a bit of difference at that :P
Lebron can’t shoot or defend. But his fans going to act like he’s elite at everything.

you don't necessarily have to be big. You just have to be a very smart player and a great iso player. Kyrie can do this as well if he had the court vision. Trae Young to a certain degree too. Dame. Curry. etc.
Larry Bird would have an absolute field day playing today.
This era of superstar scorers, spacing, and ranged assassins would decimate and overwhelm any era of basketball. Everyone always says how physical the '80s, '90s, and early '00s were, and there was hand-checking and all this, but if you look at the data there were more fouls called back then than in today's game. I grew up watching the last of the Jordan era and the early '00s Pistons, and there just wasn't anything like there is in today's game. There was no KD, or Steph/Klay, or Giannis, or Harden, or Luka, there just wasn't these physically imposing and basically unguardable scorers, with respect to Kobe, T-Mac and Iverson.
Could you imagine Bird in today's game. No doubt several triple double seasons.
