I do get your criticisms of the original manga and first anime's writing. Ikumi-sensei understood these flaws (she felt that both Mint and Zakuro were underdeveloped) and worked with the reboots staff until her untimely passing in early March 2022 with certain elements from the source material and 2002 anime being left in the time period they occured innn in favor of a more structured story with good character development, goals and motivations. I highly recommend TMM New for this reason.
Kishu being a creep disturbed me so much as a child lol. It was the only thing I remembered about the show for a long time. So nostalgic to see some clips from it.
Ironically I'm watching this series right now. I'm very late to the party but I've been a fan of Tokyo Mew Mew since Middle school. Yes, I never did like Quiche. He is indeed very creepy and it is especially amped up in the anime version as well. I also like how the characters are more fleshed out in the anime adaptation too...especially Zakuro. In the manga, we didn't get much with Zakuro but episodes 42/43, and 21 really showcase her personality and resolve the best. I also like how we got more of a look into Pudding's homelife and how her little sister's kindergarten teacher ends up helping out as well as her friends when she is sick. Overall, I do enjoy this series a lot. Aoyoma is a good guy for Ichigo but I appreciate you bringing up the fact that she doesn't have much agency or is constantly focused on what he would think. It could be chalked up as normal teenage/puppylove behavior but it goes on for the entire series. But I think Ichigo has her heart in the right place. Overall...I would give Tokyo Mew Mew a 8/10. Very decent show. Would recommend.
It disturbs me how many people shipped Ichigo and Quiche back in the day. He sexually harassed her multiple times, and when she rejects his love confession, he gets angry and tries to choke her. That's not how you treat someone you love. It's awesome he tried to save her from deep blue, but that does NOT excuse any of his actions!
Yeah the manga needed to punish him more. I think the appeal in the dub is that he's "edgy" since plenty of people seem to like him there. But he was awful!!!!
I think it boiled down to the fact a lot of us were 13 at the time, didn’t know better, and thought he was edgy and cool. The manga and anime prolly coulda done a better job making it clear this wasn’t okay
@TheKawaiifan That makes sense. I definitely had some questionable ships when I was younger. He was definitely a more interesting character than Masaya in an obvious way, but even in high school I recognized their dynamic was similar to abusive relationships.
When I was younger, I knew he was abusive, but for some reason, I was really into it. I don't think I "shipped" them because I always kinda shipped the goody-goody boys with the protags in shoujo (they rarely win the love triangles... 😥), but "the rival stealing away the girl and having his way" is a form of expression in fantasy I really love to this day, and honestly, that's probably the best way to explain the prevailance of the trope in girl's/women's fictionーit's a way to have fun without affecting real life. I do think we could be more careful about expressing this in youth fiction (I don't think kids are too dumb to know right from wrong if they're taught, but a lot of kids aren't taught), but as a pure means of expression, I say it's fine.
Really great video ice enjoyed this a lot. I first found this series as a kid under the 4kids mew mew power and now you make me feel like I said go watch the Japanese anime version. I also agree the transformations were so beautiful almost all of them and even though lettuce isn’t my favorite I still like the idea that the green one was aquatic and not blue. Also the color choices for the teams. I wish Precure would do pink, blue, green, yellow purple team Tbh
@ the two other girls I mentioned are in the reboot, but they were in video games I think consoles or something, but the rest of the mew mew are actually in the reboot
To be honest, this magical girl anime was made me entering another Mahou Shojo like Sailor Moon and Precure The concept was mixed, so the first anime was a lot of fillers for make the story better or make it more sense, heck even the character on this series was not ordinary -Ichigo : Clumsy but not as bad like Usagi Sailor Moon -Mint : A rich girl was got hedonist type, but actually she was care for another people especially Zakuro (on TMM New they made her as a smart girl) -Retasu/Lettuce was actually insecure, but actually she the most brave girl hide in her weakness -Purin/Pudding was the energetic ones, so you know it -Zakuro was an actrees, it's not common for high profile became a super girls, at least Ikumi didn't made her manly like Trio Stars from Sailor Stars Not like Sailor Moon Crystal, which they became very stale because they force to be same as manga Actually Ichigo was love Aoyama at the first sight, while Aoyama itself actually just a disguised as Deep Blue.... But, Aoyama itself basically feel became more human because he saw the opposite of him with Ichigo, so at least now he respecting human rather than himself (or maybe his alien kind) 17:12 Kish/Kisshu was a n extremist boy actually, but if you saw him at Remake TMM New, he more aggresive. Ohh actually if you know, all fans Kisshu from US was massive, even the massive itself made him became a largest husbundo at the fandom rather than Aoyama
I've loved tokyo mew mew since I was a teen, reading my manga volumes until they literally broke down. I recently revisited the manga and I was kind of disappointed to realize how much it actually is about Ichigo's rotating cast of suitors and not about the girlies being friends and being cool heroines. In my mind i only remembered how awesome I thought the girls were... I've yet to properly watch the remake, but I would be really happy to see them give the girls more time with eachother without any of the boys butting in. Oh yeah I never watched the anime (didnt know how to find anime online as a kid) except my GOAT, Tokyo Mew Mew Butterfly AMV
The manga gives the girls nothing☠️it's actually quite funny how little each of them do. They get a few moments to use Mew Aqua but other than that? It's really about Ichigo's suitors
Can you do a Shugo Chara retrospective?? I haven’t seen anyone talk about that one despite it being a core childhood memory and… viewing it VERY differently as an adult 🤣
A lot of mangaka (especially female mangaka) of that era grew out of the doujin space where ships and fantasy expression reigned supreme. It's not that I think everyone was ignorant of toxicity in relationships back then or was complicit in abuse, but rather that it's fun to fantasize about toxic guys domineering over other more innocent girls/guys, and it had appeared so frequently in doujin spaces, it just became a popular trope as people awakened to it. Same with other problematic relationships in fictiom, like clear age differences, power imbalances, etc. It's not really that complicated, nor did many people see fictional representation as a form of value expression back thenーjust entertainment fun. Maybe a bit irresponsible with youth series (I'm conflicted), but nonetheless, "I draw what I want to draw, and that includes fantasy desires where I get to control the ending!" On a side note, Ichigo was definitely one of my first crushes in anime growing upーamong a bunch of other cute shoujo protags. Like, yeah, I would ship them with the nicest guys in each series (they deserved love), but a part of me now realizes I was just projecting. Lol I mean, what was I supposed to tell child me? "You like girls actually"? ...Hmm... Would've saved some time, maybe.
That should still be a thing today, but sadly, far too many people don't understand the difference between fiction and reality. You get far too many weirdos and creeps nowadays hating you and calling you all types of names for your fictional likes
Cool video😙 Tokyo Mew Mew OG anime have it flaws, but it still enjoyable show to watch. I have nice time watching it from time to time. It remind me of Sailor moon OG anime where it difference from it manga counterpart. (I do hope you would talk about it reboot, Tokyo Mew Mew New in the future)
That reminds me when will english dubbed for the reboot of Tokyo Mew Mew Series be finally released at last because I would have though they will be planning to do that just like they did for Sailor Moon Crystal and Shaman King 2021.
It saddens me to see how people seem to forget this anime and only focus on the reboot, even going as far as to bash this series and to point out what's done great with the reboot (usually focusing how boring Aoyama is on this which I heavily disagree with) While New has some great moments, this series and manga are superior to it on the term of character interactions, character develoments and the final battle (which I love a bit more in this than in the manga + Aoyama's sacrifice and Ichigo's reaction to it in the manga which I loved)
@cureice Reboots are hit or miss cases. They can be done "wow, this is amazing, better than original" or "this is garbage, why was this made" or "this was meh with some good things".
This is my favorite series of all time. I hope its okay that my post is long. Theres a lot of reasons why to the point I am thinking of making a blog or something where I review every episode (I am very biased admittedly) Its really hard to put this into words, but ill try. I watched a lot of more violent anime (even if they were aimed at kids or teens like shonen action anime) and I would always feel really stressed for some reason. I don't think I was fully aware of my sensitivities. When watching Tokyo Mew Mew (specifically the reboot, Tokyo Mew Mew New), I literally felt my heart warmed in a way I never felt before. I started admitting stuff I never wanted to admit. Even though there was violence in Tokyo Mew Mew, none of it seemed to affect me (where as many shonen action anime did affect me.). I'm usually sensitive to violence, but Tokyo Mew Mew was an exception. I wonder if part of it has to do with the purification aspect, because Ichigo purifying the monsters with that attack footage always calms me down. Seeing the transformations, the romance between Ichigo and Aoyama, and such warmed my heart so much that the reboot instantly became my favorite show and then I watched the original series and I loved it even more than the reboot, though I think thats because the original has more episodes Ichigo is my favorite character ever in any media. I love that her name is japanese for strawberry, because strawberries are my favorite food and my favorite ice cream flavor and such, I love that she is a pink heroine, and I love how romantic she is. I also love that Ichigo is a catgirl because cats are my favorite animal. I love the cutesy art style of Tokyo Mew Mew as well. I'm pretty sure its a big part of why I love the series so much. I was also able to easily comprehend the series. I have poor comprehension skills and a lot of anime I watched prior I wasn't able to comprehend super well, but I was able to with Tokyo Mew Mew I love this review, mainly because I always love seeing Tokyo Mew Mew reviews. This series makes me want to cry, because of how much I love the series, but I have a really hard time crying or showing much emotions in general
I love Tokyo Mew Mew ❤. I own all manga volumes and it's my comfort series to go to when I need some fluff 😊. It is not a pecfect show by any means but It has a dear spot in my heart. This show has many iconic voice actors (such as Daisuke Sakaguchi and Megumi Ogata ❤). My favourite characters are Kish, Ichigo and Masaya. I am actually writing my own fanfic based on this series/and manga/and original ideas with characters being adults and Ichigo being more... let's say... obsessive towards Masaya even after they have split up... I switched the love triangle of Kish, Ichigo and Masaya around a bit and also switched Ichigo's and Kish personalities for the sake of writing experiment... lets see how writing this goes 😅

I remember watching Tmm as a middle schooler and mostly just loving the magical transformations and daydreaming of being like them. One thing I would change is the romance plot line. Ichigo has 3 love interests. An incel alien, her creepy boss, and white bread. The only valid choice here is the most boring. Aoyama barely feels like a character, he’s so boring to watch. Points tho for loving the protag so much he goes and manifests his own magical boy transformation, lol. I’d say either tone down the romance plot or just rewrite the guy
