    I totally understand the reading slump. It is real. When I'm in a reading slump, I tend to reread books that I have enjoyed in the past. I don't have to worry about not liking the book and for me, it is easy reading. That said, you could also try short stories or novellas if the plot of the books become cumbersome. But don't feel bad about the reading slump. We all go through them. Take your time and relax. Don't force yourself to read anything that you are not enjoying and don't feel bad about putting a book down. There have been many times that I have put a book down because I was not in the mood and then came back to said book and loved it. Enjoy your reading journey and don't fight the slump.

    Oh my gosh I’ve been stuck in a NASTY reading slump since July started!! Everything I started I just couldn’t bring myself to continue reading even though I wanted too and everything I did read I felt like I wasn’t absorbing.
    What I’ve been doing is reading my husband a physical book (The Mountain in the Sea) out loud while he plays games.we get to pause and speculate out loud together and talk about the characters w like and I do silly voices, it’s been helping a lot!
    it seems silly but I used to read him books while on phone calls when he’d drive up to visit while long distance, so this is something we’ve done forever and it’s been helping me push through my slump to have a buddy💖

    Lately, I’ve been in that half-in, half-out slumpy phase. I’ve devoted the last few days to weeding through my physical and digital libraries. The choice paralysis has been soooo real and fine-tuning both collections reminded me of the books within them that I’m so excited for!

    i'm sorry to hear you've been having a reading slump! i noticed i always try really hard to "fight" them & last month i finally gave in and just finished 0 books (for the first time in 5+ years). and... it sort of worked?? i feel much more excited to read again and feel like i got a brain cleanse out of it :')
    but i can imagine finishing 0 books feels like something you can't really do esp if you create content around it. good luck regardless!! ❤

    Wonderful, as always Elizabeth! My only advice is take a break! I think reading so many books that may not be good or your cup of tea will naturally lead to a slump. While it may be interesting and entertaining for us, it could just be draining on your reader’s soul! We get to dnf books left and right, but you finish these books that while may be interesting to analyze and understand, do nothing for your joy of reading! Like one commenter said, “reread something that you love,” or as I say, “take a break! Recharge those reading batteries!” We love you and will support you!!🪫💞🥰

  • @TheAlobear
    @TheAlobear 2 месяца назад

    I can sympathise about the reading slump - I've had three DNFs in a row this week (would have been four but I felt I had to finish the current family book club choice...) and nearly DNF'd the book I started yesterday (but it's so ridiculously nonsensical that I'm kind of intrigued to see where it's going...).
    You've helped me out, though - because I listened to Roleplaying since watching this video and really enjoyed it. As a late-40s freelance book editor who loves video games (and is also bi), I felt incredibly seen and I loved how certain romance tropes were subverted along the way. So, thank you, thank you, thank you!
    My best advice for a reading slump is to reread a fairly chunky book you know you absolutely love and will be absorbing and comforting but not too quick to get through - and then lose yourself in it for a few days. My go-to for that is any Austen novel because I know I won't be tempted to skim.

  • @KellyAK
    @KellyAK 2 месяца назад +1

    I'm also in a reading slump. Mine is because I did a book club readathon in May in which I read 25 books (a record for me) - I had a wonderful time doing the readathon, but I did get burned out a bit and I ended up reading only 7 books in June. I usually do a pride reading challenge for June and last year it was by far my favourite and most busy reading month, so I was really dissapointed this year, especially as 2 were quite short graphic novels and the last book of the month was terrible 😅 I also DNFd 2.
    For July I decided I would completely mood read (other than a couple of book club books) and it is helping, though I'm still not quite back up to my regular speed. I am reminding myself that it doesnt actually matter, I read for pleasure so I shouldn't force it.
    Also, so glad you loved The Locked Tomb books, it is my absolute favourite series in years, I am obsessed in a way I havent been about pretty much anything since I was a teenager I think!
    I re-read The Count of Monte Cristo in Jan/Feb and absolutely loved it, I'm afraid I am one of those people who wouldn't cut anything out 😂

    I just finished The Song of Achilles and it immediately gave me a book hangover. I didn’t know what book would even come close to how perfect that book was. I used a horror novella as a palette cleanser and idk if I’d consider myself cured, but I at least stopped thinking about Patrochilles for a minute 😭😭 I’m considering immediately rereading it in the hopes it might get me over it lol. Or maybe I’ll just buy Galatea bc I haven’t read that yet

    I have been in a multi-year slump. I went on vacation recently and did not bring my tablet but brought my ereader and read the Tea Princess Chronicles trilogy. It’s a fantasy cozy mystery/romance/coming of age and it was so nice to get back into reading and it got me in the mood for more reading. And you got me wanting to reread Le comte de Monte-Cristo. It’s been a long while since I’ve read them.

    I get that. I want to read more, but I'm just not in the right headspace despite the hunger to read more. One thing I'm trying again is hybrid reading-ebook/book while listening to an audiobook. It helps when I have the sudden urge to move, yet still want to read and also I notice when I'm sapcing out because I missed what the narrator said and rewind back-giving me a nudge to focus back on the book. I also listen to an audiobook I know I love to inspire to read more-the last one was A Discovery of Witches. I've listened to that a lot and still pick up on new things that flew over my head, but now realize and make me think how the series will continue.
    Another beautiful ournal spread.
    Rules for Second Chances by Maggie North is a contemporary romance involving a couple in their thirties. I haven't read it yet, but have been hearing good things.

    Thanks for sharing your experience going through a reading slump. It amazes me how much you read (while also annotating!!), and I’m surprised that even annotators can be in slumps! I’m not an annotator myself, but I’m thinking about trying it out at a level 1 haha (I watched your video on annotating and the clear sticky notes idea seems a good way to start). When I’m in a reading slump and I don’t want to break from reading, and don’t even feel like rereading my fave books (because my headspace isn’t in the right place, i.e., distracted lol), I’ll switch genres and read short form, short story collections, poetry (especially!!), and non-fiction in the self-help domain or spiritual category. I tend to read dense and long books, so the genre swap helps to freshen and lighten my reading, and the novelty of a new subject helps hold my attention!

    your reading journal continues to astound me in its beauty, omg! as for the reading slump, when i find myself falling into that listlessness about reading i change up the sort of book i read! i tend to gravitate towards novels, so picking anything from poetry to plays to short stories to non-fiction usually does the trick in getting me excited about reading again (i swear by poetry especially, reading a couple of poems every day feels very... restorative, for me?)

    I've been slumped since February, and for whatever reason July has just been a really good reading month for me! I have a lot more time now, and less things I have to read, which has probably helped. But I also found a new favourite, "Tender is the Flesh" this month as well! Readathons made me read a lot, but I slumped out hard the weeks after. I allowed myself not to read when I didn't feel like it, and picked up shorter reads to get the momentum going again. In addition to rereading, which I see people mentioning, one way of breaking a reading slump for is to read something undemanding, punchy, or plot-y. A genre or author with a pattern that's familiar to you. Something you don't have to “take seriously“

    I've been in a bad reading slump ever since October last year. I can absolutely relate to the feeling you describe. I keep picking up books, loving them and then never picking them up again, forgetting about them or not feeling like I am in the right mindset to appreciate them as much as they deserve. The only books I've managed to read in the past long while, has been books I actually haven't cared much for, because I didn't mind just cramming through them and forgetting them. I've been imagining that in my case, all of this is due to a recent death in the family and a very hard, long winded procedure that I am going through at the moment, which is having me anxious and sick with worry all the time (on top of my chronic illness, that the procedure is for) - and I keep telling myself that once this situation in resolved and the procedure finished, I will be wanting to read again. ( I hope I'm right) thank you for sharing! It's making me feel less alone in this accursed reading slump!

    I had a reading slump last month and half this month, I only read two books, which is very low since I usually read 10 on average. Now I am back with six great reads! The "solution" for me was to stop pressuring myself about it and move to other hobbies until I felt like going back. When I was ready, I read a book I wanted to read long time ago, it was a book that I watched its adaptation and I was familiar with the story hence it wasn’t as intimidating!
    We need to allow ourselves to be in reading slumps and not push ourselves-almost violently- to get out of them. I think it’s only linger deeper if we fought it.

    That sounds like a slump. At least that is how slumps work for me. I know for some people, it is not reading at all… but for me it’s more not finishing or engaging. Honestly, there isn’t one cure that works for everyone. I reread or read out of my comfort zone and that can help sometimes. But most of the time, I just have to ride it out and do other things. My mind and body are usually wanting something else is all. So I do some new crafts, spend time outside, hang out with people I love, try new recipes, or start a project for work instead of reading. Before long, I get my equilibrium back and feel engaged with reading again… but I just do what I want and let myself be happy even without reading for a bit.

I go into it completely blind so I have zero expectations.

    I think the length of the Count of Montecristo and the side stories are due to the fact that is was originally published as a series. It probably required some repetition and to provide regular "closures" to the reader with short side stories.
    It's my favorite book, so I don't feel it's too long, but I like it so much I'm biased 😀

    Sometimes I read a book and I lose interest (not DNF). I just stop and don’t force it because that can ruin the book; it’s just not the right time. So I do a different hobby or read something else that sparks my interest again and know that I can come back to the book later. If I’m in an actual slump, then I just be productive doing something else or have a totally random book lined up, so you don’t feel “unproductive” during the slump or too “pressured” to like a book you pick up 📚😊

    Glad to hear your review of 'Meeting Millie' as I also picked it up recently and, although I liked the premise, I had to DNF it due to the constant biphobia and slut shaming that you mentioned.

    Hi Elizabeth. Thank you for sharing your experience with the reading slump issue. I definitely agree with you about the immersion thing. I find that when I don't immerse in a book right away, it typically means the book isn't meant for me right then. I tried to read Violin by Anne Rice and I just didn't get into it right away whether that's because the writing wasn't captivating to me, or my brain wasn't calm enough for reading (ADHD things). I also get into slumps when I've been binge-reading as well. How do I handle this? I'll usually try and find another book, or I'll do something else.
    Again, thank you for sharing your reads with us. Sending my best your way.

    I feel like I was in a reading slump for years. A combination of not having enough time and not being able to focus on the words on the page. I've had the same goal of 30 books a year for the past 4 years, and I kept not reaching it. 2024 has finally been different. I've already read 29 books and it's only July :) Almost all of my reads have been audiobooks, cuz I still can't focus on ebooks to save my life, but I did read one physical book and had no issue focusing! I wish I could access more physical books, but it's not possible at the time :/

    Regarding the reading slump - and I do understand this is different for you because you're a content creator - but I would advise to just take a break and not force yourself to read anything for a while. No guilt, no pressure. Just do something else entirely for a while, until you feel the need to be absorbed in a story again. I don't know if there's something like "reader's burnout" but since reading is in fact your job - maybe allow yourself a vacation?

    heya, long time lurker here, hiii!
    big journaling fan and I really love your content.
    I just want to ask about something that's been bothering me in general about fanart - and not at all just in your book journal videos. I really like your content and want to keep on watching, so I kinda hope that the criticism or question(s) won't annoy you. what's been bothering me is this: you use fanart for some of your spreads, don't you? yet you never mention any artists (or I may have overlooked and -heard that, if so I'm sorry!) and I feel that does a disservice to the great many artists creating these works for us fans to enjoy. especially on pinterest the lack of credit to original artists runs rampant and ... for selfish reasons, I'd love to go see the artists other works, and I'd just love to see you give credit where it's due. I hope you understand where I am coming from, but I follow so many great (fan)artists and always hear how work gets stolen and reposted and all that.
    I hope my meaning comes across well and as well-intentioned, too. thank you for your wonderful videos!!
    oh! I also loved yardley's role playing and have heard good things about her other works. they seem to be all about people with special interests ;D

    Wasn't Tamsyn Muir in a big controversy for writing fanfic about minors doing explicit things and minors being sa'd and being linked to an actual p***phile in real life? Or did everyone forget about it? Cause I remember reading threads on twitter and reddit about all of this and never read their books because of it

    • @PlantBasedBride
      @PlantBasedBride  2 месяца назад +1

      I’d never heard of this but with a little research it seems the accusations were unfounded and the fanfic Muir wrote, while containing upsetting subject matter, wasn’t glorifying it and was a way for Muir to work through her own trauma as a victim of childhood se*ual a*use.

      @@PlantBasedBride I hope you didn't take it the wrong way. I was actually just asking cause it was talked about and then a bit forgotten and I really didn't know if it was a problematic thing or if it had been addressed. It was never really 'solved' so I wasn't really sure if it was a coping mechanism or just a way to 'spice' her book (as unfortunately some authors do) so I was going on the side of caution and avoiding her. As the way you described the book was really interesting, I really wanted to be sure I could read and support her art as well. I wasn't accusing you or her of anything as what I had read was all accusations but never really proved. But I really thank you for your answer and I'll probably be adding the book to my TBR because of you! ❤
