So here’s a little bit of a fun fact about competitive Mawile in gen 3. It did not run adamant Nature, because attacking wasn’t the point of Mawile in gen 3 OU.
The point of Mawile in Gen 3 OU was as part of a Baton Pass chain. These chains usually started with Ninjask for speed boost, then you’d gradually accumulate stat buffs until your last Pokemon, which was either Cradilly or Exploud, could finish the rest of the battle by itself.
Mawile was a potential Defense booster for these teams. The advantage of it over something like Vaporeon was it’s bulk, being able to resist a lot of different attacks and also having Intimidate to further add to its physical bulk. It could also stay around to do a few Iron Defense boosts because it’d be passed Ingrain from Smeargle.
So yeah, it’s not running Adamant Nature cause it doesn’t even have attacking moves on most sets.

I have always loved Mawile's sprite. The fact it faces you makes it so much more visually interesting, such a shame it isn't very good in until it got a mega.
like the design of the mega just wish it evolved instead so Mawile could be usable with evolite.

IMO I've always had a fondness for Mawile even before the Mega cause of its peculiar appearance. Stats unfortunately aren't great but like Sableye the charm makes up for that in my opinion. I have much less fondness for the other particularly weak single stages from Gen 3 like Spinda, Volbeat/Illumise, and ESPECIALLY Luvdisc cause they don't have that going for it.

The mega made it amazing and a competitive choice, Giving it fairy made it good though, You can totally use one in a playthrough it will do work, Great move pool and decent stats, I'm rather fond of the line myself so I was really stoked with the gen 6 changes, Was great to be able to pick up my snuggly murder doll, Throw it out into battle and not have it just deleted by even the ai

Mawile actually got increasingly good over time. It wasn't just bad, bad, bad and then suddenly Mega, it was actually given new tools every generation. Gen 3 Mawile was bad because half of its learnset was dark type moves which were special at the time, though it did fill a niche in competitive battles as a Baton Passer with Iron Defense. Physical-special split made most of its learnset finally usable, and gen 4 also gave it access to the elemental fangs as egg moves. Then, in gen 5, it got Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Foul Play and Iron Head as move tutor moves, giving it a much needed STAB attack and better coverage options, plus access to Shear Force as a hidden ability.

Mawile is my favorite Pokémon, as my RUclips icon indicates. I consider myself pretty well-versed in using it. As much as I like MDB, you did a much better job than he did in his Mawile playthrough. You considered all of Mawile's strengths and assets. Also, I'd say that Mawile's greatest weakness is not its stats, but the dreaded Four Move Slot Syndrome.

Do you know that the Sludge Bomb TM is available in the Dewford Town Hall after Norman? It's not super effective against much, but it's a good option for a physical attacker. Especially if you've got something else to deal with Steel types.
Emerald also has several Move Tutors that you never bring up. Mawile could have been taught Substitute on top of the Lilycove Department store.

I know that in some of the older games the ai is programmed to make its move selection based on if that move will crit or land a secondary effect if used that turn. I don’t know if emerald is one of those games but it would explain torkoal using body slam.

    • @lordgeovanni
      @lordgeovanni 2 года назад +1

Yeah, I think this is exactly why the Torkoal battle happened that way. Body Slam had a 100% paralyze chance so Flannery decided to paralyze you instead of Overheat. While the Overheat would have gotten the KO, the "advantage" of paralyze was what caused Body Slam, despite its extreme ineffectiveness here.
And as nintai said, this even includes Crits so you can see situations of some moves being double-resisted and still chosen (even with other Super Effective moves) all because it doesn 1 more damage point with a crit.
This also explains the Winnowna Pelliper using Supersonic before Protect - it knew about the perfect confusion chance. Then there was the double Protect - again, the second Protect was a guarantee (to the AI) so it went for it due to you being confused and possibly able to hurt yourself.

    It's a-me! "That guy" again!
I personally think you could have played this run very differently. You replaced Fake Tears with Feint Attack and I think that was an error.
Mawile's most powerful moves tend to be on the special side, and, even with the difference in ATK/SPATK, I think a special build would have gotten you better results. runch on a target at -2 I think is likely to be far more damage than Secret Power, especially in the midgame.
Personally, I think your optimal set would be Fake Tears and one special move, selected for upcoming fights, and to then run two physical moves, one normal-type and one for coverage. This is especially true for Steven. I think a combination of Fake Tears and Flamethrower would generally be your best bet for that fight, using Brick Break to deal with the Aggron and Cradily.
An example of when this strategy would have helped you is against Phoebe. Both of her Dusclops have Pressure, which, combined with your 3HKO against them and Protect, is costing you 6+ of your Crunch PP. Fake Tears + Blackglasses would probably reduce that to a 1HKO and cut your PP usage in half or better, reducing the amount of risk involved in the battle.
That said, I liked your solution to Steven. I think that was pretty smart.

Wow it did...surprisingly good! I'm honestly really surprised, I expected Mawile to struggle a lot more but its movepool is surprisingly really good. This run was super well played too I think. Maybe a Rash nature in the future might be a good idea for all of those just missed Crunch KOes. The only thing I thought about while watching was whether Iron Defense was overkill and whether Stockpile was a better overall choice. You only get to use it 3 times but it does boost both Defense and Sp.Def. It's normally like...really bad though so I'm not even sure its worth it.
Steven's Aggron by the way is like, really surprisingly bad. It not only has Thunder, but it also has Solar Beam and Dragon Claw. I joke to my friends that its supposed to be a "box legend killer" with Thunder for Kyogre, Solar Beam for Groudon, and Dragon Claw for Rayquaza but just like. Why. There's some pretty questionable movesets in Emerald but this one is like notoriously bad.

I think the reason it used body slam the first time was because it knew it was going to get paralysis. In some Pokemon games there is an AI quirk where it will know if a status affliction will be applied on a specific attack. It probably saw the paralysis and that's why it used body slam.

I've been looking forward to this since you teased it in your Sableye video. I'm a fan of Mawile but I've also used an Emerald Version Mawile so I expect a fair bit of frustration using this Steel Physical attack whom lacks Steel moves and primarily learns special Dark type attacks by default.
1:45 - Brick Break and physical Sludge Bomb sound like fun options here.
3:36 - I do adore seeing which trainers you highlight during your adventure, especially when they get bestowed artwork!
9:20 - Holy heck; I did not expect even a critical hitting Ember to do that much damage. I guess I forgot that the Torchic line pretty had even (and a high even at that) in both it's offences.
14:33 - I'm not sure what I'm more surprised by; the fact that you didn't use this opportunity to give a Mawile a STAB Steel move via Hidden Power of the fact that Mawile can't be taught any Ground moves. Seeing that Flannery fight, I can certainly say you made the right choice going with a Ground type Hidden Power.
23:11 - It's rather surprising how often you attempt freezing strategies with Ice Beam... an attack with only a 10% chance to freeze. It just seems incredibly risky with rarely the pay-off to it.
25:51 - "Well, first I have to defeat Wally but he's like a giant pushover." - Ouch, the karma of that line soon struck you.
36:57 - Love the Heart Scale bit here; unexpected subject but hilarious. Rather hilarious that you ended up utilising Mawile's only Steel move in the end, especially after dismissing Iron Defence earlier on.

What's sad but interesting is that the only egg moves you could make great use of are: Swords Dance and Poison Fang. Maybe Ancient Power but breeding to have those moves together is easier said than done. But let's not forget that Mawile is known as the Deceiver Pokémon, its move pool would not be properly updated to have Iron Head until the next generation over at level 56 (man they really make you work hard for that move). They would better balance it once it gained the Fairy Typing instead making Iron Head at level 36. Hyper Cutter is probably best since it has decent enough defense and most Pokémon sent out on turn one aren't even physical attackers in later parts of the game.

  • @eightteentwo

What's really interesting about Mawile's odd level up learnset for its type is that the moveset makes (almost) perfect sense given it's inspiration is a yokai (whose name I forget and am not looking up right now) with the form of a woman whose long hair is a second mouth. What's weird is that it's a steel type instead of dark. I've never understood that choice, especially since they didn't bother to give mawile an offensive steel move. Granted, this is the same team that made 2 Water/Dark purely physical attackers.

Mawlie's design is really cool ,especially with the emerald sprite . The sad part is that it's a steel type without excess to stab ,and above all it's a slow physical attacker .🤔But you teach it some great moves, it depends which kind of Mawile would you like , because it can go in 2 paths : one, a full special attacker with sets like sunny day, flamethrower(or solarbeam or ice beam or crunch), fake tears and substitute or sludge bomb if you want more variety, or two, a stalling Mawile with iron defense, swagger(can be taught by a tutor in Slateport city, in the house where you can get the sooth bell ), attract, toxic or rest, but for that your Mawile would have to be female to be fully used .Overall that was good run , so keep up the good work!☺

15:57 Flannery selected Body Slam on Torkoal because she is either AI Level 7 or 8 so she understood that Mawile wouldn't have been KO'ed by Overheat so she went for Body Slam favoring a secondary effect of paralysis. AI Level 7 or higher trainers actually know when they will get a critical hit/secondary effect outcome so I bet if you kept replaying that turn by loading a save state she would select Body Slam and it would always paralyze. Norman also knew Facade wouldn't KO your Mawile so he used Counter since he could likely do more damage against you. T&L have AI Level 8 so the Xatu knows exactly how many Calm Minds it needs in order to KO your Mawile with Psychic and also explains why Solrock will always use Sunny Day before Flamethrower to try to roll for the highest damage. You'll definitely want to look at AI levels for future runs like Shedinja cause all trainers have AI Level 0 which understand which moves will do no damage to a Pokemon. Even the most basic of trainer will force switch to a Pokemon that can hit Shedinja if they have it.

IIRC The reason Torkoal used body slam on the first turn is that the gen 3 Al calculates damage for every move and is guaranteed to randomly select from any move that would kill. The AI doesn't know what the roll for the actual attack will end up being, so when it looked at the overheat damage, it probably rolled low in the calculation and saw that Mawile survived. There are different "levels" of AI that all behave slightly differently, but because it "survived" both body slam and overheat, it seems that Flannery's AI just randomly chooses a move at that point without really taking damage dealt into account.

30:12 - A sheet of stainless steel would be dented up noticeably. Steel doesn't actually become fully hailproof until you get into the abrasion-resistant alloys, and even then you need plate thicknesses.

Oh, oh! Regarding Pelipper's Protect, I saw a video explaining some Gen 3 A.I. quirks the other day! IIRC, "Good A.I." will prioritize support Moves on Turn 1, but the turn counter doesn't tick past Turn 1 until the player has used an attack/damage-dealing move. Runners exploit this to set up on this "first turns", allowing them to sweep. Maybe there's something like that happening when succumbing to confusion, where whatever logic led it to choosing Protect persists until you manage to Do Anything?

I'm playing through DD Gale of Darkness right now and one of my staple team members has been Pearl (like pearly whites) the Mawile due to her having Sing and False Swipe once purified, golden for softening up shadow Pokémon to snag. That was when I noticed how much gamefreak apparently hated Mawile in gen 3 due to the movepool and stats.

I did a steel-type only run of Emerald and I found Mawile to be useful as a swords dance + baton passer. Including intimidate that means by the end of the second turn, you have an opponent with -1 and your pokemon of choice at +2, even though you need to breed for swords dance

The first gym vs Nosepass using Fake Tears once would have likely resulted in saved time because that lowers Sp. Def 2 stages. Have not seen the rest of the video to see if you fixed that in a more optimized run or not.

  • @yamiryushi

Against Roxxane you could have used fake tears against nosey mc nose nose to lower its sp. def. since bite is special. It would have likely taken less time to take it out.

Mahille is actually based on a yoaki called Futakuchi-onna. It's a woman with a second mouth on the back of her head that uses her hair as arms to feed itself. Fun fact. :)

Astonish also has a chance to flinch, though.
Regarding the first battle against Flannery: Gen 3 AI is well known to cheat, running the calculations for what will happen if it selects a move before selecting the move, best exemplified by using evasion strategies against a Pokémon that has an always-hit move that wouldn't otherwise be the best move--the AI will select the better move only if it's going to hit. It's not infallible, as it runs the damage calculations for the protection and then a second time when it actually selects so it can sometimes think that a move is a valid option for a KO because it got a high roll and then not get that high roll and you'll survive. So what must have happened was that Flannery determined that you'd just barely survive an Overheat at full health (since the AI always prioritizes a KO), but Body Slam would paralyze. The next turn, the chip damage from Body Slam put you in range to be KO'd by Overheat.

  • @AB-pg1qg
    @AB-pg1qg 2 года назад

Torkoals Overheat was a roll, that's the only way she could use Body Slam.
The Ai (at least for boss battles) simulates all attacks on the moveset, if on KOs it will take it every time, but it simulates with a random damage roll and they can get a different roll on the actual attack.

  • @go5408

Cars take less damage then plain steel panel take from hail even in IRL
Main reason for it is that Cars have a protective layer over the substrate its made from.
However without this protective layer plain steel does get damaged by ice/snow.
So "plain" steel types being damaged by ice does really make sense.
