  • Imagine finding simple solutions to seemingly complicated math problems and enjoying it, too. Math educator and author Greg Tang offers three cues - visualization, reasoning and number sense - to break down equations and preconceived stressors in ways that will take away bad memories and provide new solutions and a chuckle or two along the way.
Greg Tang is a Math educator and author.

I will be teaching math this year for the first time in 10 years.... thank you for taking the fear out of it for me. I’ll keep getting better at it so my students love it this year.

I love this guy, who cares about sound quality!! He is a rock star!!! I have paid hundreds of dollars to see this presentation in person. You are fortunate to find it on YT!

well, like many of not so wealthy people like me resort to RUclips and expect decent audio quality from such a useful video in such a good forum like tedx. BTW I was able to listen to this on my phone. I shared the link with my friends. They are unable to listen to this at all. Then I tested it on another phone. I then realized that this video doesn't have any intelligible audio on some phones. surprised ? me too. But, like very few people, nowadays, I took time to rethink before commenting on someone s issue.

Similar to me. I had tried to watch this video by using two my phones. I had found broken audio. I had assumed, the problem had not been on this video. Then I watched it on my laptop, it worked.

My ears care about the sound quality, I can barely make him out. Thanks for being a spineless sycophant though. I'm just wondering what colour your nose is now with all the brown nosing you do.

Yeah... But if you can't actually hear anything... That's pretty important.
Weird though. It worked just fine in my car, but my phone and other Bluetooth speaker just produce a garbled mess. Great content otherwise.

I already use some of those ideas. It would be interesting to see how he would approach harder problems like the equations and fraction problems that don't have nice whole number answers.

Instead of breaking 790 into 700 and 90 (to divide by 2) and then juggling 350 and 45 in your head, which is way too many digits for my tiny skull, it goes much easier if you break 790 into 800 and minus 10: you get 400 and minus 5 which is 395.
I did it via 700 and 90 in my head when he showed it on the screen, then the smoother road occurred to me afterwards.

As a parent this helps. Nothing more frustrating with my kids coming home and asking for help and being told by my kid that I'm not doing it the way the teacher wants it done.
Also.. on the subtraction, If they don't learn the traditional method of borrowing then doing math outside of base 10 would be harder to learn I imagine. Octal or Hex math for instance would not work this way.

So all of the number sense videos show me things I already did in my head since forever, because it just makes sense, but as soon as I started uni math became my nightmare .. And when I ask my tutors how to make sense of everything they just tell me learn it by heart and keep doing it... are there number sense videos on "higher math"?

What if we do it this way
30 is 3\6 of what number
We divide 30 with 3 which will give us 10 and then 10 multiply by 6 is 60
I mean what if we avoid x which is alphabetical representation of a number and just focus on the arithmetic operations which are far easier to comprehend and teach

I love when smart people start explaining something "basic like a 6th grade math problem" and then proceeds to treat the explanation as if it's something natural like breathing. Typical teacher, never listening.
