Everyone, please remember that expiration dates do not mean that the food is bad. It's a waste of food tp throw away plenty of items with an expiration date. Some jutritional value may decrease and colors may change. But it doesn't mean it's bad.

I've been learning that lately. I will still use certain things after the expiration dates, and if it's not expired, I can donate them

Suggestion: maybe get some long slender organizer so they reach in the way back of your pantry and you can slide them in and out easily and see what you have instead of stuff hiding in the back. I always forget about stuff when I store it like that 🤪 I am trying not to do that anymore. It’s a work in progress. 💜

The pantry was a big undertaking, but I was so glad when I finished! Unfortunately, I found quite a few items that were expired. I thought I was doing better at watching expiration dates. Oh well. Note to self….only stock up on items you used quickly: buy other items as you need them! Thanks for this challenge Denise!!!❤

I had like 3 different pantries to declutter. I throw away a lot and made a decision not to stock up like that anymore. I live alone and during the pandemic I bought way too much. I ended up giving a lot away and throwing out food that had expired. I’m not sure how to stock pile for 1 but I need to learn. I also live on the 3rd floor so taking the garbage out was a real chore. I felt good when it was over. I’m enjoying the challenge, keep um coming.

I get that the Best Buy expiration date doesn’t mean the food is bad however, if you haven’t used it by that date and you don’t have any idea when you will I say trash it. It’s just another way of keeping clutter around. I throw things away that hadn’t passed the Best Buy date but was close and I knew I wasn’t going to use it so I tossed it. You also don’t want to run the risk of getting ill or your food not tasting as good as it could have.

I did my pantry a few months ago and it’s fine. I did decluttered 2 shelves in my fridge instead. I got rid of all my cooks books and cooking magazines years ago. I hardly ever used them.

I go through my pantries a few times a year, so this was an easy organize for me! I’ve used all my foods that were close to the best use dates or looked bad, so I had nothing to toss! I also shop my pantry to donate to the food banks, so that helps me stay on top of things! I use all my empty dark bottles for my homemade vanilla and other extracts, after I clean and sanitize them. Love this series!

Hello! I have to neaten up my pantry because I purged earlier this year. But my cookbooks are out of control. Thanks for doing this!

I’m getting started on my pantry. Now, I cleared a lot of my cookbooks years ago. Talk about regret. I really find them enjoyable to go through for inspiration ~ Janet 😘

Those dates are manufacturer dates. For those I use my eyes, nose, and taste buds. The gov. only regulates baby food and medication. They do say pay attention to the expiration date for those items.

If it fits, take the dispenser top from the clear empty bottle and use it with a empty dark green bottle. better to dispense oils into a dark bottle.

The tops didn't fit. that's why I had the empty bottles. Even the bottle I bought, the top didn't fit the other bottles. I finally just pitched them when I decluttered. They were taking up space.

I found a big jar of unopened mayonnaise in my cupboard. Expired in 2020. I opened it out of curiosity. It was yellow and kind of disturbing. NEVER mess with Mayonnaise

I made some potato salad with old mayonnaise twice and it tasted strange. I throw it away but the second time I checked the expiration date. It was old. Thank God I didn’t just keep eating it. One thing about me if something I’ve eaten before doesn’t taste right I won’t eat it. So now I’m careful about how much I buy.

Seems like you bought a lot of things you've never used or tried. You can avoid waste by only buying what you enjoy and make a menu plan to use up the unusual items when you buy them.

I can't give this a thumbs up today. Too much discarded. It looked like miralax that you tossed away. That doesn't go bad. You should consider more than food for your "prepper/extended pantey". Medicines are a mast when prepping. So many of those items could have been donated. The pie shell could have been frozen for later use. I don't understand the obsession with expiration dates. They are rarely expired. It's a date the gov agency gives for food to be at their prime nutritional value. It doesn't mean it's all of a sudden bad on the expiration date. Most items are good well past their dates...even years. Same with meds. Most meds are good years later.

I’m with you. I have had people tell me that I function from a food insecurity mentality. I say “noooo, I function from a don’t waste food mentality.” I can find recipes for odd ball ingredients 😁. But, we’re all on our own journey 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
