I never understood how piracy has become so romanticized. It's an ugly, brutal, criminal way of life, with very high odds of an early and unpleasant death
To be fair, life at the golden age of piracy was ugly, brutal and quite unfair. Men's would be press-ganged in a navy ship without choice or signed a contract on a commercial one after being offered a couple of pints, often waking up under the deck after the ship sailed off the port with an hell of a hangover, crew rations were often full of maggots and for the navy the beef barrels filled with bones and rotten meat by unscrupulous merchants and corrupt inventory officer. Life was hard on-board the ships, any mistake punished by the whip In comparison piracy was (for a short time as the average pirate operated for 3 years) a good option.

It’s interesting that the French didn’t take them to France and actually charge them with piracy. Had it been an American vessel, that’s probably the absolute best the pirates could have hoped for.
And thats why they didn't did it. It would have cost a lot of money, as these ships don't come back to France very often it would have need a specially assigned plane or maybe month of onboard detention, and France would have had to pay for the trial and detention. And it could have encouraged a lot of people to rush to French warships, fire a few shell and surender to get a free immigration. So waste of money plus risk of "spam" of warships, which can be extremly dangerous.
@@Pub2k4 It was not a question of "daring to attack" XXXXX countrie's navy, their attack was a mistake. It could totally have been an american ship, and I think they wouldn't have brought them to the US either. These guys are not worth the money needed to imprison them. No one willingly attacked a French or any nations vessel since years, it would be a declaration of war if from another navy, and a sucide if from 5 guys with 1 AK47.
If only they were allowed to do such a thing. Seems like they arent, because they never seem to attack back with any real intent. Just warning shots and capture.
@@alexcrowder1673 The ship is not threatened by the pirates, all that migh happen is a bit of scratched paint, and if they are really agressive they'll be obliterated when closer. But if the warship fire at them and the newspapers learn it it may cause huge problems in their homeland. So its better to scare them, as they won't be stupid enought to charge a warship.
@@Lassisvulgaris stop being a pathetic weakling. Blast the pricks apart and they wont do it again. Your the reason these people get away this this behaviour
it seems insane that these guys would risk piracy in the contemporary world until you notice that they all seem to weigh no more than 120 pounds when captured
It'd make a good advert for an opticians... A pair of beat-up, old skiffs containing a handful of ragtag pirates opening fire on a ginormous, super-modern destroyer warship, with the headline "Should've gone to Specsavers"
French and more generally occidental navies can't do this, even if a lot of soldiers would love, because it could cause huge political problems if medias learn about it. Russians clearly don't care the same, and on this case they are clearly right.
And how long after they were turned over to 'authorities' do you think it took to get them rearmed and back out on the sea? I don't begrudge the action taken by the Somme. The good guys have laws, and tend to follow them. That is, after all, what separates the two poles of right and wrong, or good and evil, if you will. The rules say you must turn them over to so-and-so and even though you know they'll just maybe get a beating for getting caught, but will be back out hunting for prey before your ship's silhouette has faded into the distance, you must follow the rules.
After several Dutch ships were attacked by Pirates always unsuccessfully, the Dutch have changed the rules for steaming in the northern Indian Ocean they now always fly a 20 by 40 ft flag at the Masthead to remind people that this is not a peaceful civilian ship! Yet that ships in the last 10 years have been attacked more than a dozen times! Always responded to lethally by the Dutch Navy!
Definitely refreshingly funny. I gotta say, tho, I think soon that this situation is going to repeat itself on a larger version of this. Stupid is as stupid does.
The French Navy is more generous that I would have been. I am so tired of pirates thinking that they can kidnap and hold people for ransom. I would not have captured them; I would have sunk their boats and dropped a ton of "Chum" into the water to attract sharks and then left to go on about my mission. If pirates learned what could happen to them I think that type of activity would immediately cease.
The pirates were kind of smart in tossing their weapons overboard. They had some sense. I wonder how Somalian authorities handle those accused of piracy and related offenses. How severe is the punishment? I can't imagine Somalian prisons are pleasant given they have citizens so desperate theyre willing to take over vessels and hold people against their will.
There is a problem. The situation is more complex, you are just looking at them as pirates. What you are not looking at is what they were before they BECAME pirates. The vast majority of them were fishermen. How many people are talking about giving those Somali fishermen compensation for the hundreds of factory trawlers that literally fished Somali waters clean of commercially viable fish during their long civil war? How many people are talking about paying them for the livelihoods they lost because of greedy, rapacious Western and Asian Fishing concerns who were blatantly illegally fishing in Somali waters? There was no International outcry about this, some Governments actually ENCOURAGED it.... Those fishermen were subsistence fishers. They were catching enough to feed their families and sell a bit on the side. You remove the fish and people like that begin to starve, they get to watch their wives and kids starve. So let me ask you a question, if you are watching your wife and kids starve, and you have access to a boat, and some guys come up to you and offer you payed employment, what do you do? Its not like you have options here. For most of those guys its piracy or starvation, there is no middle ground. We created the problem, but as usual its the Somali's who are really paying the price....
wooden boats don't shines well on radars, plus as its very slow and unlikly to do any harm, why spending more money to track what would be fishermens 99% of the time ?
Imagine doing WWI and WWII tactic against these pirates where armed merchant ships with guns tucked or hidden away deep inside the ships and when someone attack them they would reveal their guns and fire at any attackers threatening them. Imagine if they have that in 21st century where armed tankers or large cargo ship would reveal their 25mm or 30mm autocannon or fifty cal machineguns at least and open fire at approaching pirate skiffs. I know they use armed contractors onboard to repel boarders, but the autocannon option is much more of a stand off option before they come in close. I know it's not possible in real world especially with 21st century bureaucracy, but one can envision something like modern tanker or cargoship with hidden autocannons and machineguns deep in the hull or deck
The problem is, if you start putting autocannons on civilians ship mostly register in doubtful countries, how much time will it take for cannons disapearing from ships and being sold to random terrorist groups ? Or just places on pirate ships? How would a merkant ship detect pirates soon enought to be able to use them efficiently ? And I personnaly won't like to have a civilians boss or compagny reponsible for stocking and maintaining ammunition. It would cause way more problems than it would solve
There is only one way to ensure that the Pirates do not reoffend. In the 1700s the French navy would have exercised much more VIOLENCE! Whether by gun or by Rope.
Why don't you ask yourself a simple "Logical- Question" what desperately forced them to pirating?? Mmm did you know that huge fishing ships! from Asia and the west are illegally stealing their fishes and livelihood!!
I am disappointed the French crew didn't treat the Somali pirates like OG pirates and make them walk the plank. Or hang them over the side of the hull in gibbets as a warning to other pirates.
The pirates were judge to France ans then released with 30.000€ reparation from France because of the "Bad treatment" they reveived from french Navy. True story.

Their niche has been taken over by several species of dogfish, the cod will need to compete their way back in, and there just are not enough of them.
And before you ask, yes, my Background is indeed Marine Ecology, including some years spent with various Fisheries departments.....
@@alganhar1 Somalia is a genuine 100% proof hellhole.
I never understood how piracy has become so romanticized.
It's an ugly, brutal, criminal way of life, with very high odds of an early and unpleasant death
An anachronistic barbaric "people" better off without
To be fair, life at the golden age of piracy was ugly, brutal and quite unfair.
Life was hard on-board the ships, any mistake punished by the whip
In comparison piracy was (for a short time as the average pirate operated for 3 years) a good option.
I wonder what crossed their minds immediately after they started getting return fire from a 12.7 machine gun :))
Like bullies picking on the WRONG person.
Are they the bullies? Or it is the foreigners who keep dumping in their water?
@Fujitachi it's seems the links between poverty and crime is beyond your understanding.
@Fujitachi yeah they aren't just murdering people they are taking hostages for money. Which is context you left out of your rant. Poverty isn't a excuse it's a cause.
@Fujitachi okay you still haven't addressed the entire reason why this is happening. Their income has been destroyed by foreign countries literally also killing people. This was done by ships to keep costs low and cause they are moving hydrocarbons that also spill. Is that criminal behavior ? Is that not murder but on a massive scale?
Amid all the crap that is going on currently this really made me smile.
Pirates: hey, let's attack that ship
Navy ship: hahahahahahaha
Immediately returning fire and sinking pirate boats will kill a dozen but educate hundreds not to try the same thing. I'd say that's a good deal.
In what way? If they didn't return, nobody would have known what happened to them....
@@Lassisvulgaris Even they are smart enough to figure it out.
@@matthewdavies2057 So, a boat goes out. Doesn't return. Conclusion: Sunk...?
@@Lassisvulgaris In that area, at night, I'd guess gunfire. If it kept on happening I'd guess warship and I'd quit.
@@matthewdavies2057 Gunfire from 400 kms away (Somme)? I doubt ANY ship will move close to the shore of Somalia....
BTW, those people are high on drugs, so I don't think they're capable of ANY thinking....
However, the last recorded attack was on 19.April 2019, so you may have a point, though pirates are still regarded as a threat....
A lover of your work. With love , from Kenya
Awesome I wanna hear more of something like these please it's a bit hard to find vids like this
3:22 Canadian Halifax Class Friggit, unfortunetly I can't make out the registry on the side of the ship for the name of it but it was either the HMSC Montreal or Saint Johns due to the fresh paint job for the time of the picture. Fun fact of the day.
The second skiffs were dead men once the dhow was captured. They would have been stuck up the creek without a paddle (almost literally 🤣)
@@justeunfan3364 Well, I can guarantee that nobody tried to attack any American ships after that one time in 2011.
@@justeunfan3364 I disagree. The US would have totally brought them to the US to face piracy charges. And I’m basing that off pre-existing precedent.
can only imagine they fire at a warship, suddenly they see a missile headen towards them from the ship
That’s true definition of fuck around and find out.
It wasnt long ago you just shot pirates. Can we please bring that back?
That fucking face when the pirates saw the mounted 50 cal mah deuces on the ship
Mistakes were made 🤣
Twice
"it's even funnier the second time!"
This is not the only Auxiliary Oil Replenishment Ship attacked by pirates. Armada's ship AOR A-14 Patiño was also attacked by pirates in 2012.
He’s done a video on that already
Pirates should be dealt with summarily, on the spot.
Yes, we should lower ourselves to their level, and not behave like civilized people.....

I love seeing the pirates getting shredded by massive projectiles off a war ship😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks mate.

It's so hilarious when pirates attack soldiers and not civilians! 😂
it seems insane that these guys would risk piracy in the contemporary world until you notice that they all seem to weigh no more than 120 pounds when captured
Arresting pirates is counterproductive. UNLESS you make them walk the plank after capture.
Imagine it was US warship, those Navy and Marine onboard probably took the chance to teach their junior enlist how to operate those 50 cal.
I dont have much faith that those pirates were punished by their govts
Whatever government they have in those shitholes was getting a cut of whatever they stole.
Punishment was for not completing the mission
What government ? Are you aware about Somalia situation ?
What tune is he whistling? Sounds familiar but just can’t make it out!
The Pirates thought the French would surrender.
It'd make a good advert for an opticians... A pair of beat-up, old skiffs containing a handful of ragtag pirates opening fire on a ginormous, super-modern destroyer warship, with the headline "Should've gone to Specsavers"
The problem is that you won't find many or any Specsavers in Somalia. Or other opticians.
Its not even warship. Its just a cool supply ship with guns on military service.
I set foot in that ship, knowing that this story happened makes it even weirder lol
Shouldn't they realized that every merchant ships have a straight hull?
You try telling two gantry cranes apart from 12 miles out in the dead of night.
How can you see straight hull or not at side, in nighttime, and something that look like a regular ship on top?
Its like chasing a rooster and trying to catch it but then it stops and turns around, and you know that you messed up 😅
I like how the Russians deal with them better.
French and more generally occidental navies can't do this, even if a lot of soldiers would love, because it could cause huge political problems if medias learn about it. Russians clearly don't care the same, and on this case they are clearly right.
Wonder when pirates will realize that if a ship is grey and got a number on it, its probably naval lol.
Those have to be the worst pirates I've ever seen!😂
There is a traditional punishment for “piracy on the high seas” the danse macabre
Funny how you people totally forget that these Pirates are drugged out of their wazoo.
Or do you think they can think sharp? 😂
I see the first group of pirates graduated from the Prometheus school of running away from things
We need to go back to what they used to do to pirates in the old days.
Definitely refreshingly funny. I gotta say, tho, I think soon that this situation is going to repeat itself on a larger version of this. Stupid is as stupid does.
This is like the modern day equivalent of Q-ships.
It seems like a few navy personnel with a stack of switch blade drones on every cargo ship could put an end to this real quick.
Looks to be a Canadian FFH City Class Frigate getting a R.A.S. at 3:22👍
The French Navy is more generous that I would have been.
A hard lesson taught here would maybe teach the next crew to think twice.
I'm surprised the Somme didn't spot the skiffs before the skiffs opened fire
Their equipment is not really made for detecting such low-tech.
@@flitsertheo even then, some nvgs would have surficed
wooden boats don't shines well on radars, plus as its very slow and unlikly to do any harm, why spending more money to track what would be fishermens 99% of the time ?
Like the pirates from Asterix…? That’s why reading is important. 😂
Maybe we should start purposefully designing pirate hunting ships to look like cargo and merchant ships
At least the Somalia Pirates have never claimed to be rocket scientist. Apparently these guys can not tell a Warship from a Cargo Transport.
Looking at how supply vessels are look like, it can't be helped.
Once the pirates were released to local authorities they were promptly released to renew their piracy.
Seems to me that the best way to catch these pirates is to look like a unarmed commercial vessel and let them attack. Then give them some hell .
now that I think about it supplement ships might be the best pirate-hunting ships out there
Brazen pirates! Next time they’ll attack a Nimitz battle group😅
you dont accidently attack something, it should say "mistakenly attacked"
That must've been the surprise of a lifetime!
So the pirates paid a fine to the local police then went back to piracy.
The pirates must be pretty thick not to recognise a naval vessel.
I can't see how the parasites were not Terminally wounded , shoot to kill and they will not be troubling you again .
France is not a country of barbarians, if they can spare a life they will
Do you think they are doing this for fun? no! They are poor fisherman!
Why don't you ask yourself a simple "Logical- Question" what desperately forced them to pirating?? Mmm did you know that huge fishing ships! from Asia and the west are illegally stealing their fishes and livelihood!!
You can't see the laws in International waters ?
I t would be nice to know if they do get any jail time? Other wise burial at sea would be ok.
I am disappointed the French crew didn't treat the Somali pirates like OG pirates and make them walk the plank. Or hang them over the side of the hull in gibbets as a warning to other pirates.
At what point did the French surrender? Cause they're really good at that
The pirates were judge to France ans then released with 30.000€ reparation from France because of the "Bad treatment" they reveived from french Navy. True story.
Idk about you but RAS ship's are like the gray area between being military and civilian.
They attack at night, can’t see color
Je Suis Le Capitaine now 😂😂😂
this is where i think the French navy made a mistake, they should had sunk the boat and left the pirates to swim for shore
Handed over to local authorities and then back to business as usual, Piracy.
Parley?
Ah refueling, what fun!
