I miss my days in the Navy. I had the pleasure of serving on CV-59, and CV-67, and all I can say is that carriers are amazing! While docked in Norfolk on the Kennedy they pulled the newly built carriers, the Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) and the Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) next to us in port, and they made the Kennedy look like a helicopter carrier. They were massive.
My first ship was the CV-59. Got there at the end of 81, made the 82 Med/IO cruise, and then took her into Philly for SLEP. I was a radar tech, so I was mostly in/around the island. When were you on the FID?

So, starting from departure Mayport, I was assigned as a supervisor in the Fire Watch division. After six months, got tired of that, and asked to get back to my division. Got that transfer, but immediately got loaned back out to the MAAs. I finally split toured out of there, left in 84, went to school in Norfolk (IFF), then flew over and met my next ship (Vreeland FF-1068) in Sicily. Finished my time in the Navy on her. Part of my time as an MAA I was paired with someone and walking a patrol around the drydock compound. Turns out, my partner didn't know me until then, but he had a picture of me at work on the ship. My radar was the SPS-43A, which had the really big (10' x 40') antenna on a platform outboard of the island. During that 82 cruise, we'd had trouble with the IFF system associated with my radar. The IFF antenna was piggyback on top of my antenna. We went up to investigate the problem, and I was the one that climbed to the top and inspected the IFF antenna. My (future) MAA partner happened to be on the signal bridge at the time (I think he was a QM, but don't remember for sure). He saw us climbing around the antenna and took a picture. He brought that picture in and gave it to me while we were MAA. That picture is presently on a bulletin board over my desk. Small world.
Served on CVN65 West Pac, IO, Med, Gulf of Sidra 86 then CV 67 Med 88-89 some interesting times. So far from home or land, made me appreciate land, trees, dogs anything but Ocean. Made good friends and served well. Now get the benefits of that.

As a Navy divorcee, yep. Almost 6 months pregnant when my husband shipped out on the Truman. NOT fun. He got to be one of the first men off the ship in Norfolk as a new dad. There was a lottery for the exact order. There were almost 150 new dads. Watching them coming it, with everyone lining the edges in their whites. One of the best days of my life at the time.

You would be surprised. On one Mediterranean deployment on our carrier, a Russian warship steamed alongside our port beam close enough to clearly see their Sailors before they turned away. Granted, that wasn't a spy ship, but nevertheless, it could be considered aggressive seamanship.

From 1960 through 1980, I was in the US Navy and when deployed we ALWAYS had Soviet intel ships follow us, picking up our garbage, getting in the way during air ops, just being pests. At time there were minor collisions, which on a slow news day, you could see on TV.. Cold war my ass.
Kind of like the way we have subs parked right outside their ports to "listen" for when their subs are either departing or coming back into port. We even know which sub is which by the sounds the subs make from props, engines, etc.

I wouldn't scan it with my best primary radar or other top active sensors - we don't want to give frequencies and modulation modes away. I would track it with lower tech and listen to it and record its acoustic signature.
A clearly idealized presentation of such encounters. I am struck by the amount of discussion regarding electronic warfare activities which is typically not discussed publicly. But, and this is a big but, the reality at sea is actully quite different than portrayed. I am a former electronic warfare technician, in the US Navy, which now has changed that specialty to a specialty cryptologist rating. The problem is that the US Navy has not been enforcing international law in that area for decades, going back to our withdrawal from the Viet Nam conflict. No, what has been happening ever since is, as a typical example, if the US Navy sails anywhere close to China, let's say within a hundred miles, China will launch fighter aircraft from Hainan. Those aircraft with fly low, 50 feet above the ocean, supersonic... we knew they were coming before they lifted off, and watched them come straight toward our position... while enroute those aircraft light off their fire control radars... then they start locking on to our vessels... at this point this becomes a technical act of war! So, what is our response? Ideally it would be to shoot down the threatl. Instead, the task force commander will give a couple of orders... first, not to take any provocative action... dispite a clear weapons engagement against the task force, which prevents electronic warfare operators from employing electronic defenses designed to break the weapons lock being acquired against our ships. At the same time the task force commander is ordering our combat patrol aircraft to land! Our CAP is being taken down, no longer defending carrier and it's screening units. There is nothing to prevent the Chinese fighters from firing at our ships point blank... and we let that situation play out... our ships overflown sometimes several times. By letting China get away with such agression for so many years, of course we have some problems now even trying to stop China from building bases out of shoals located in other countries exclusive economic zones.... how did China manage to do that if the US Navy had been doing it's job all these years? It wouldn't have happened if the the US Navy was not hamstrung from doing it's job by spineless US leaders who have let China do what they have been doing virtually unopposed. That is the truth....

This was very informative and opened my eyes! In the early 70s, stationed at NAS Pensacola. women weren't doing all these jobs. Me? Desk job in airframes, some base communications transport, etc. Still, I'm glad to have had the experience and loved my duty station!
Here's a scenario: Country A has a naval group consisting of a cruiser, maybe a couple of destroyers, a supply ship and a submarine crossing an ocean, heading for Country B. This is in the 80s, so there are satellites in use, which is why Country C is aware of the group. Even though Country A knows Country C can see them and track them on sat, and Country C knows that Country A knows that, Country A chooses to send a single frigate out into that ocean to intercept the group, and follow them. Just to "wave the flag" and show them "we see you". But, instead of just following, that single frigate decides to do loops through Country A's ships formation. Repeatedly. Coming as close as you would if you were doing an UNREP. Until abruptly ordered to stop. What would you think of Country C in this case? What if I told you Country A was Russia, Country B was Cuba and Country C was the US? That was Dec 85 and I was on that frigate. Missed Christmas for that deployment. Recalled people from Christmas leave for that. We intercepted them around Bermuda and followed them into Cuba, as expected. Never saw that mission as serving any real purpose and intentionally interfering with their formation was very antagonistic. Of course, that may go to the nutjob we had for a CO, rather than actual US policy. The scuttlebutt was they radioed Moscow, Moscow radioed DC, and the Pentagon radioed the ship and ordered us back in line. My point in all that is simply, the USN has also been known to interfere with and "poke at" other Navies.
In the 1950s, I was a Marine serving aboard an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic and Med. Those were the Cold War years when Russia tested us continually, just as the Chinese are doing. Strong Naval forces must always be maintained by the U.S. History has repeatedly proven that.

When she passed away at the age of ninety-five, my mom and I were removing and storing my aunt`s personal effects and found her dress uniform, minus the hat. We don`t know what happened to that. Point of Order needs to be made here as this is a Navy production that should know better. All of this is fine except for the fact that a CV would NEVER perform any of these actions itself as the ships and aircraft of the battle group would have done them long before a threat got anywhere near the carrier. The unit in charge of tracking, identifying and engaging with a threat is known as the Force Track Coordinator that is normally NOT a CV and is usually reserved for the ship assigned the duty of Anti-Air or Anti-Surface defense, stationed many miles from the CV. I miss my days in the Navy. I had the pleasure of serving on CV-59, and CV-67, and all I can say is that carriers are amazing! While docked in Norfolk on the Kennedy they pulled the newly built carriers, the Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) and the Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) next to us in port, and they made the Kennedy look like a helicopter carrier. They were massive.
My first ship was the CV-59. Got there at the end of 81, made the 82 Med/IO cruise, and then took her into Philly for SLEP. I was a radar tech, so I was mostly in/around the island. When were you on the FID?

So, starting from departure Mayport, I was assigned as a supervisor in the Fire Watch division. After six months, got tired of that, and asked to get back to my division. Got that transfer, but immediately got loaned back out to the MAAs. I finally split toured out of there, left in 84, went to school in Norfolk (IFF), then flew over and met my next ship (Vreeland FF-1068) in Sicily. Finished my time in the Navy on her.
Part of my time as an MAA I was paired with someone and walking a patrol around the drydock compound. Turns out, my partner didn't know me until then, but he had a picture of me at work on the ship. My radar was the SPS-43A, which had the really big (10' x 40') antenna on a platform outboard of the island. During that 82 cruise, we'd had trouble with the IFF system associated with my radar. The IFF antenna was piggyback on top of my antenna.
We went up to investigate the problem, and I was the one that climbed to the top and inspected the IFF antenna. My (future) MAA partner happened to be on the signal bridge at the time (I think he was a QM, but don't remember for sure). He saw us climbing around the antenna and took a picture. He brought that picture in and gave it to me while we were MAA. That picture is presently on a bulletin board over my desk. Small world.
Served on CVN65 West Pac, IO, Med, Gulf of Sidra 86 then CV 67 Med 88-89 some interesting times. So far from home or land, made me appreciate land, trees, dogs anything but Ocean. Made good friends and served well. Now get the benefits of that.

As a Navy divorcee, yep. Almost 6 months pregnant when my husband shipped out on the Truman. NOT fun. He got to be one of the first men off the ship in Norfolk as a new dad. There was a lottery for the exact order. There were almost 150 new dads. Watching them coming it, with everyone lining the edges in their whites. One of the best days of my life at the time.

You would be surprised. On one Mediterranean deployment on our carrier, a Russian warship steamed alongside our port beam close enough to clearly see their Sailors before they turned away. Granted, that wasn't a spy ship, but nevertheless, it could be considered aggressive seamanship.

From 1960 through 1980, I was in the US Navy and when deployed we ALWAYS had Soviet intel ships follow us, picking up our garbage, getting in the way during air ops, just being pests. At time there were minor collisions, which on a slow news day, you could see on TV.. Cold war my ass.
Kind of like the way we have subs parked right outside their ports to "listen" for when their subs are either departing or coming back into port. We even know which sub is which by the sounds the subs make from props, engines, etc.
If we are in international waters then we have the right to be there and so do they…our military works tirelessly to keep us safe just want to say thank you very much

I wouldn't scan it with my best primary radar or other top active sensors - we don't want to give frequencies and modulation modes away. I would track it with lower tech and listen to it and record its acoustic signature.
A clearly idealized presentation of such encounters. I am struck by the amount of discussion regarding electronic warfare activities which is typically not discussed publicly. But, and this is a big but, the reality at sea is actully quite different than portrayed. I am a former electronic warfare technician, in the US Navy, which now has changed that specialty to a specialty cryptologist rating. The problem is that the US Navy has not been enforcing international law in that area for decades, going back to our withdrawal from the Viet Nam conflict. No, what has been happening ever since is, as a typical example, if the US Navy sails anywhere close to China, let's say within a hundred miles, China will launch fighter aircraft from Hainan. Those aircraft with fly low, 50 feet above the ocean, supersonic... we knew they were coming before they lifted off, and watched them come straight toward our position... while enroute those aircraft light off their fire control radars... then they start locking on to our vessels... at this point this becomes a technical act of war! So, what is our response? Ideally it would be to shoot down the threatl. Instead, the task force commander will give a couple of orders... first, not to take any provocative action... dispite a clear weapons engagement against the task force, which prevents electronic warfare operators from employing electronic defenses designed to break the weapons lock being acquired against our ships. At the same time the task force commander is ordering our combat patrol aircraft to land! Our CAP is being taken down, no longer defending carrier and it's screening units. There is nothing to prevent the Chinese fighters from firing at our ships point blank... and we let that situation play out... our ships overflown sometimes several times. By letting China get away with such agression for so many years, of course we have some problems now even trying to stop China from building bases out of shoals located in other countries exclusive economic zones.... how did China manage to do that if the US Navy had been doing it's job all these years? It wouldn't have happened if the the US Navy was not hamstrung from doing it's job by spineless US leaders who have let China do what they have been doing virtually unopposed. That is the truth....

This was very informative and opened my eyes! In the early 70s, stationed at NAS Pensacola. women weren't doing all these jobs. Me? Desk job in airframes, some base communications transport, etc. Still, I'm glad to have had the experience and loved my duty station!
Here's a scenario:
Country A has a naval group consisting of a cruiser, maybe a couple of destroyers, a supply ship and a submarine crossing an ocean, heading for Country B. This is in the 80s, so there are satellites in use, which is why Country C is aware of the group.
Even though Country A knows Country C can see them and track them on sat, and Country C knows that Country A knows that, Country A chooses to send a single frigate out into that ocean to intercept the group, and follow them. Just to "wave the flag" and show them "we see you".
But, instead of just following, that single frigate decides to do loops through Country A's ships formation. Repeatedly. Coming as close as you would if you were doing an UNREP. Until abruptly ordered to stop.
What would you think of Country C in this case?
What if I told you Country A was Russia, Country B was Cuba and Country C was the US?
That was Dec 85 and I was on that frigate. Missed Christmas for that deployment. Recalled people from Christmas leave for that. We intercepted them around Bermuda and followed them into Cuba, as expected. Never saw that mission as serving any real purpose and intentionally interfering with their formation was very antagonistic. Of course, that may go to the nutjob we had for a CO, rather than actual US policy. The scuttlebutt was they radioed Moscow, Moscow radioed DC, and the Pentagon radioed the ship and ordered us back in line.
My point in all that is simply, the USN has also been known to interfere with and "poke at" other Navies.
In the 1950s, I was a Marine serving aboard an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic and Med. Those were the Cold War years when Russia tested us continually, just as the Chinese are doing. Strong Naval forces must always be maintained by the U.S. History has repeatedly proven that.

Other countries know they can do this because if we don't allow our soldiers to defend themselves these countries know that our ships are going to do the same thing and this is what's allowing these countries to approach our ships without any worries. But like they say you can only poke a wild animal so many times before they turn and viciously attack and right now these countries they're poking the United States and you don't want us to go on the attack. I believe joint operations in the South China Sea is co-operative, and not "hiding behind you", regardless of whether it be Philippine, French, British, Australian or any other nation participating.
Even the greatest, most powerful navy in history cannot defend the Pacific. It is simply too vast. We do our part, but we do need allies with us, and they do come alongside. Nobody has the supercarriers like the US and as a maritime nation we have a vested interest in freedom of the seas. Do not denigrate the support we get from the smaller nations though. They provide information on local conditions and provide recent intel when we are close by.

All of this is fine except for the fact that a CV would NEVER perform any of these actions itself as the ships and aircraft of the battle group would have done them long before a threat got anywhere near the carrier.
The unit in charge of tracking, identifying and engaging with a threat is known as the Force Track Coordinator that is normally NOT a CV and is usually reserved for the ship assigned the duty of Anti-Air or Anti-Surface defense, stationed many miles from the CV.
If a CV ever detects and reports any radar contact before anyone else- something seriously wrong has occurred.
