    I love dubs because even though I can watch anime subbed, I can just process shows a lot easier and I like watching shows when I can look away for a second without missing what’s happening.

  • @Banelock
    @Banelock 5 месяцев назад +9

    Watching dub anime has a number of advantages imo. You don't have to read subtitles so you get to focus more on the animation and you catch more details. You hear EXACTLY what word is being emphasized in a sentence so some lines just have more impact and depth. Sometimes in sub you finish reading the subtitle noticeably before the character actually finishes speaking so it creates that disconnect where you kinda spoiled yourself before the line actually lands.
    So yeah...dub anime is the way to go for me as long as the dub cast is quality. And these days it often is.I I love dub attack on titan , Demon Slayer , MHA , FMAB , Dragon ball...etc.

      Missing little details in the animation is the biggest reason why I prefer dub. I watch many reactors and they miss a lot of important details because they are watching sub.
      The easiest example of this is when Erin wakes up from what seems like a dream and he has the key around his neck.

    I grew up watching dubs, anime was expensive in the 00's & being a kid with no money, being able to watch anime late at night on adult swim & toonami was truly an experience (I was a nite owl), & I got back into anime a few years ago because of Attack on Titan dub & I was surprised that everyone (including my brother! lol) was telling me that watching the dub was wrong but for me, I guess its a bit nostalgic but more importantly, I'm completely immersed in the animation, world, & characters more by watching the dub. & I do think that dubs since the late 90's into now have been pretty great. Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex & The 2nd Gig, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo, FLCL, Black Lagoon, it was a quite a vibe back then :)

      Like far out. This is exactly what I made this video. For this type of response. I love both. But sometimes I just really wanna watch dub. For comedies, like chainsaw man I would prefer to watch the dub. Comedic timing for me just works better when its voiced and not timed to how fast I read.

    Subs are better for AOT, the japanese voice actors convey the emotion way better than the dubs. I read the lines in english but hear the emotion from the japanese voicer actor. Perfection. ( also the titan screams from the japanese are so far beyond the English dubs its not even close. )
    But when it comes to dubs and subs we cant ignore the elephant in the room of what it seems mainly funimation are doing by inputting their politics instead of accurate translations.

    • @thefullmetaltitan9732

    The first anime i watched were in dub and they were on TV, so loved them. But it took only one anime in sub to make it impossible to go back. There were times where i watched shows in dub, and some of them were much better then i have anticipated, especially compared to amature dubs. But still for me no matter how good is their performance it transforms the show into something different, its not original anymore. Some jokes are different, tone can be different, cultural references may be different and the whole vibe is different too. There was a time when i was stupid enough to call dub enjoyers stupid. I'm not proud of myself for this. Now i'm old enough to understand that people are free to enjoy anime however they want, but still i feel strongly that dub and sub may be both godly but still different.
    PS: I know it may sound dumb but for my ears japanise seyuus way of talking and expression is somehow cleaner, brighter, easier to understand compared to english ones. I would think that my exposure to subs just made me more receptive to japanise intonations, but i'm pretty sure it was like that from the very begining.

    I’d recommend looking into the original Pioneer Dub for DBZ’s first 2 movies. There’s a rly genuine attempt to replicate the pitch of Masako Nozawa’s original voice for Goku and it’s rare to see a dub from that era taking such effort to maintain accuracy. In general most of the performances are outstanding especially for a late 90s Toonami Era Dub.

      @@DareToEntertain In some cases, the dub does a better job of explaining what's actually going on. The situations the characters get themselves into can often be very nonsensical, so it's important to understand the core idea being conveyed.
      In other cases, the dub takes lines of dialogue that felt pointless in the sub and makes them funnier. One example of this is when a character is running through town at high speeds while carrying an injured man on his back, stopping oncoming vehicles with his bare hands and performing all kinds of ridiculous stunts. In the sub, the onlookers express their bewilderment with stock standard lines like "No one's going to believe this. Even if I tell someone". But in the dub, the onlookers are portrayed to be more annoyed than anything else, saying things like "I'm all for fitness, but haven't these guys ever heard of going to the gym?"
      I actually recommend watching the show in dub with the original subtitles just to compare the two.

    Spaniard dubs over anything that isn't anime are generally incredible (The Simpsons in spanish are better than the original and i will die on this hill), but for some reason anime mostly takes the short end of the stick here.

    Watch whatever you want, but there’s only negative reasons someone would watch dub. Vast majority of people that watch dub either can’t pay attention, have a weird aversion to foreign things, or just suck at reading. This isn’t exclusive to anime either, people that watch Squid Game or Money Heist dubbed are weird.

      This comment doesn't have a single lie or missed mark. Its just that it speaks to a different issue at hand. And if someone who you were engaging with is someone known for not FULLY engaging with their media such as anime. Then youd just go about it differently. The same way how you talk to your grandparents about shows youve seen compared to your best mates.
      And none of the things youve mentioned also state that you now gatekeep these people. As anime gets larger more people who watch it low effort are gonna be among this group. That sucks but is also reality. We are gonna see more dogshit hot takes with people who dont understand what they watched. That is also gonna be a factor. In short I hear you.

      When people are talking and fighting at the same time, which happens a lot in anime, it’s literally impossible to fully enjoy both when watching the sub. That alone makes dub superior for me.

    • @TheJackal159
      @TheJackal159 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@StreamlinedGaming_ Again, that just means you're bad at reading. You aren't supposed to stare at subtitles and read one word at a time, they're literally designed so that you can look at the entire screen and understand them without specifically staring at them.
      When I watch something subbed, 99.9% of the time I don't need to specifically stare at the subtitles word for word to completely understand them. Instead, I am looking at the ENTIRE screen and understanding/absorbing the subtitles as they pop up.
      This is pretty much a universally agreed practice/opinion in the cinema community, I don't know why it's controversial in anime.

      @@TheJackal159 It's quite fascinating how you've positioned yourself as the arbiter of the 'right' way to enjoy anime. Bravo! It must be a tremendous burden, possessing such unique insight into the 'universally agreed practice' of the cinema community.
      I suppose those of us who appreciate dubs are just wallowing in our inability to multi-task like the enlightened beings who watch subs. We should be ashamed, really, for enjoying the entire screen without the distraction of text, or for preferring to hear the dialogue in our native tongue. How dare we choose an option that suits our personal preferences and viewing styles! Clearly, our simple minds just can't comprehend the complex art of subtitle reading. Thank you, all knowing TheJackal159, for showing us the error of our ways.

      @@StreamlinedGaming_ It's actually sad how much both of your comments reek of insecurity.
      Both of your points fall under the three categories I listed in my first comment. You're bad at reading and have a weird aversion to foreign things, just own it instead of lashing out. Those are the reasons behind your personal preferences of "enjoying the entire screen without the distraction of text, or for preferring to hear the dialogue in our native tongue"
      Yes, consuming any media in it's original intended format or language is the right way to view it. This is literally common sense in every other community besides anime.

      Literally every point I make is aimed at all dubs. Spanish, German WHATEVER! Its literally a mentality approach to anyone who watches something that isnt japanese. Why are you so quick to jump that my tune would be different to something other than eglish? Literally the point is. Whatever way you watch it. If you enjoy it and actually are trying to consume it properly. Then its valid. Thats it.

    • @Popikawaii
      @Popikawaii 5 месяцев назад

      @@DareToEntertain It's not valid though. The author created it in a certain way. You're watching an altered version. It's like reading a book that's gone through the hands of several layers of censors and changes before you consume it. It's like getting tools which are dulled so you don't hurt yourself by thinking too much.
      Easy example - Pokemon - Jelly donut? Wtf? Recent example - Patriarchical societal demands?
      People can enjoy it however they want, like they can enjoy an Americanized picture of Mona Lisa eating a burger and fries. It's not wrong of them to do so, but its a far cry from the original.
      It's incredible disingenuous of you to claim otherwise.

      The manga is in Japanese. Are you saying to read the non translated version? This is the EXACT thing I am calling out.
      Also do you have the slightest idea how a book gets published? You literally described any book ever. LITERALLY ALL BOOKS EVEN MANGA!
      And comparing dubs done by industry professionals to dull tools is absurd. It's insulting to the entire industry. The entire way you have gone about having this conversation is baffling. My take is as simple as can be. If you jump to these wild conclusions then whatever. Continue to be the showcase of the exact type of person that gatekeeps and pushes people away from the space.
      In being a content creator I get to hear so many different perspectives on topics including such as this. And its literally things like this as to why people don't even bother entering the space. You make 5-6 comparisons that do little to nothing in actually moving any needle forward. So thanks for ignoring everything in this video to further push this.

      @@macready84 The guy above kinda said what the aim of this is. Its not to say everyone does this. But the wider community absolutely does. A title like "Some people are wrong about anime" Does not get peoples attention. And considering this video is still struggling then yeah its still not hot enough in that department.
      The overall gist is to yeah. I think the space around dubs is toxic. My anime attack on titan video from last year featured some clips of dub because that is what I watched the show in. I received SO many comments on how my opinion or my entire 22,000 word essay was now invalid because I had consumed dub first.
      Is this hyperbolic or a bit playful. yeah. But yes people are wrong about dubs. They arent the worst thing on planet worth. If you dont think this. Then you arent a part of that group. You're with us. If you dislike dub and dont care if your friends watch dub of the same show. Then again, you are not a part of this group I am saying that are wrong.
      This should clear things up. As a dub watcher my experience has been quite messy and its 2024. In 2013-14 or even earlier i know it woulda been 10x worse.
