Sorry Sammy I disagree. Owner operators Make up a overwhelming majority of this industry and we 100% control the rates. When I give a Rate which is always at min $4.50 on all miles deadhead to, loaded, and deadhead from they will pay that rate unless some other truck says hey I’ll do it for less!!! The last time a broker said I can’t pay what I paid last week to me I said why not ? She said the markets gone down ! I said really? How so fuels up .25 cents from last week nothing on my ends gone down ? She said it’s not me it’s the market I said okay thanks sorry I couldn’t help ! And hung up she spent the next 6 hours trying to get someone cheaper and when she couldn’t she called back and paid what she did last week plus the extra fuel increase for wasting 6 hours of my life ! That’s how it goes in my trucking business unless someone else says I’ll do it for less. So I ask, why would anyone do it for less? McDonald’s makes money, Walmart makes money, why shouldn’t we ? And when we make money lol it’s still a small amount in the scheme of business owners.

Sorry I just seen this I run a flatbed out of the Pittsburgh PA area I stay within 350 miles of Pittsburgh my truck sits outside the house a lot but every time it leaves I make money and if it can’t I don’t leave luckily God has gave me enough to keep on Truckin and all I can do is wait and pray for the next paying load. I will say this it’s tough to get them to pay good money for our trucks and it is even harder to get them to pay more than we did it before so if you set the bar low they remember and when you ask for the extra 500 bucks they’re likely going to say no.

Always the best bet is to stay out of debt. Thing about trucking is its sewn up tight. You can't make a dollar that uncle slam don't get half of? You can't move that truck unless you contract with the road pirates. You think the laws are made for you? Their made for the company owners who own the politicians. I have been thinking about becoming a fleet owner for several years now. I have done hours of research and multiple hours of number crunching. I would have to say the numbers just don’t make sense to me. I could be completely wrong but to me it seems like trucking is the only industry That owners are completely satisfied being in a upside down business. Let me explain. The average truck should make roughly $275,000 a year. Pay your driver fuel maintenance insurance and all of the other nonsense fees you as the owner might make $80,000 After expenses. Don’t get me wrong $80,000 sounds really good. But how I see it. You spent $195,000 to make $80,000. Hence the reason I said upside down business

Hope truck prices (trailers too) come back down to Earth as well. I lucked out and got a 2017 Prostar in fall of 2020 before inventory dried up & prices spiked. Payment around $1200/month, not too terrible. Agree having good or excellent credit is a must when talking to lenders.. fortunately my credit is very good. I'm guessing lots of owners that got in late 2021 & this year on lease purchase or bought new trucks & trailers are feeling the pain now.. especially ones with bad credit. Johnny didn't factor in the big insurance premium on his $300k purchase either., which is why it's important to keep a spotless MVR. Bet we're gonna see auction houses & truck lots fill up with repos shortly. Stay safe Sammy.

My name is Johnny, but you missed on my business model. I spent 25 years in management for a fortune 500 company so I had a pretty good grip on how to set up my business model. I bought a 2016 freightliner cascadia in May of 2020. They had the truck listed for 69,000. I offered 40,000 cash and they accepted. I bought a 2008 wabash 53' dry van a month later. They wanted 11,000 but I offered 7,000 and they accepted. Used prices were extremely low due to covid. Insurance through progressive for just under 8,000 a year. Right now, I'm hauling freight 300 miles or less from home (Ohio) and and making between $3 and$4 a mile. Shorter loads to help save on fuel. I'm fairly new to the industry but my advice, for what it's worth, is to wait for the truck market to drop again. 6 months to a year and truck prices will be much lower. I expect the rates to stay fairly flat until next spring. But you never know. Keep your fixed costs as low as possible and try to eliminate your personal debt is the best option. Just my 2 cents.

I must admit it has been rough though with this economy. Two years ago I leased a 2015 Cascadia sleeper truck with 240,000 miles with the option to purchase at the end of the lease. I didn't have that large down payment to purchase one. My first year I ran local home everyday and made over a quarter million dollars. Last year I made just under that. My truck will be paid off April this year. I think I did pretty good considering how this economy has been a total sh!t show. I’d like Brokers to be regulated to Charging only a “Broker fee” how much I’m not sure maybe $50 or $100 whatever it is but a “Brokerage Fee” per load that fee is the same regardless of Miles or Material! The brokers aren’t hauling it so why would they make more for a 50 mile load vs 5000 mile load ? My intended outcome is Shippers Know what the Carrier, and broker makes and so does the carrier and We can Get rid of allot of the Issues out here where a $5,000 dollar load $4,900 to the truck and $100 to the broker one week and next week it’s still a 5,000 load but the truck gets $2,500 and so does the broker!!

I've owned other business's and now part owner w/husband of a truck. O/O you should always make what it takes not to just make your bills but if you don't have a truck payment then still enough to put a monthly truck payment in savings for maintenance or that cash to put down on a newer truck.
If you say you own a store that gets 70% of its income from.vlack Friday to Christmas you have to budget for the rest of the year, it's not time to buy a new personal car.
Trucking is the same there are good months and bad months you have to save for higher fuel in lower fuel seasons etc .

If I clear $30,000 - $35,000 a month hauling cryogenics but little Johnny only clears $3,000 a month hauling general freight off a load board, I can buy a new truck every 2 years where little Johnny can never buy a new truck !!

Sammy I'm in agreement with you besides the per mile rating. If noone starts their trucks for that 1.50-1.80 a mile the rates have no choice but to meet the requirements of operators. I understand everyone has payments on whatever and have to make a certain amount per week let's say. Again, if no truck in this great nation started up for less then $2.50 per mile that would then be the standard price of transportation. Fuel man doesn't accept a lower rate, mechanics, tow and tire guys, insurance, lumber, etc. Noone accepts lower rates then what they charge besides the one in that seat.
Now tell me I'm wrong sir, let's think about that please

When trucks take cheap loads the only person who is benefiting is the broker! We don’t need more brokers out here I think everybody can agree on that! if you look at the amount of new brokers is getting out of control they literally have trucks out here running the freight for the fuel surcharge and sometimes less while the shippers are paying top dollar

Right now it's a perfect storm... rates are down coming for the manufacturers and shippers.... Inflation is hitting them too and they want to keep there profits .....
. Brokers and dispatchers are fighting each other for the cookies and the overcapacity of owner operators are fighting for the crumbs..... And worst of all we have new owner operators and fleets that did not plan took on inflated truck payments and are going to fight before they go under this equals to rates continuing to fall as they get more desperate to keep their trucks moving.....
