I was going through my subscriptions, deleting the ones I haven’t watched in a long time. I don’t remember ever watching this channel, probably because it’s been a while, so I was about to delete it. Then, for some reason, I decided to watch for a few minutes. Very enjoyable and informative! (So much better than “tours” by people who seem to think THEY are the point of the video. New Orleans seems to attract them.) One correction though: St. Louis No. 1 was “a” setting in Easy Rider rather than “the” setting. ++++ Uh-oh, you also forgot to mention that the “Cemeteries” streetcar is one of the supporting “characters” in the famous, intense Tennessee Williams play/movie (1947/1951) A Streetcar Named Desire. In the movie, Blanche Dubois, once a beautiful, well-to-do plantation owner, finds her sister’s shabby French Quarter apartment by taking the Cemeteries streetcar then transferring to, you guessed it, a streetcar named Desire.

Late to this party, as usual... Years ago I sent friends from Washington DC for a visit to N.O. On a Sunday afternoon after a meal at Commander's Palace, at my suggestion, they wandered in to Lafayette Cemetery across the street - the gate was open. They soon encountered two workers at one of the tombs and a HUMAN SKULL on the ground! One of the men noticed them and said the cemetery was closed and they weren't supposed to be seeing the work in progress. They were preparing the tomb for a funeral. He explained the "year and a day" law and how the remains were being prepared (bagged) to be placed in the lower portion of the tomb so the upper chamber would be clean and empty for the next family member. No harm. No foul. Just a little misunderstanding and an open gate... And a memory!

I wanted to ask what places you would recommend for learning about Italian-American history in New Orleans. I ask because my family is Italian-American, and they actually first settled in New Orleans. We saw the gravestones of many Italian-Americans who moved there. I have always felt deeply tied to this part of my history and sincerely want to learn about it.
Thanks for watching the video Rose. Best place to know about Italian-American history is American Italian Cultural Center. It has a collection of information and items that honor the role Italians have played in shaping the city's culture.
