It's true, after about 50 years, most people's name won't be uttered. There were big movie stars in the 1930s whom almost no one remembers now; to be remembered for 100 years is quite an accomplishment. On the other hand, maybe only a dozen people from the last 100 or so years will be remembered for 1000 years -- Einstein almost for sure, maybe some other scientists who have some stuff named for them. But US presidents? Maybe not all of them. Even today, how many people know who Chester Arthur was?
When I die. I want to be buried in the most inconvenient spot in a vault that will be a pain to move when they RIP up the place to build a highway or subdivision years later.

Whenever I see old photos or when I tour a cemetery I often wonder, who were they? What did they love, hate, dream. What was their biggest fear, or greatest achievement. What did their voice sound like? Who will remember me?
My father passed away in April 2018 and I cant remember what his voice sounded like. Ive tried to recall. No one is going to erect monuments to us. We lived, loved worked and died just like millions of people before us.
A few years ago I visited my long ago relatives in Bethlehem, Pa. They were the original settlers of the town of Bethlehem. They were Moravians and escaped from Czechoslovakia(not called that back then) in the 1700's. I saw my 5xs great grandfather's grave! It was incredible.
I'm hoping to do the same thing sometime soon. My 6th great grandparents were the original settlers of Chillisquaque across from Sunbury and Shamokin' off of the Susquehanna River. I haven't found any records of where they are buried yet. Hoping to very soon. It would really something to be able to visit them. My 6th great grandfather served in the Revolutionary War there and from an article that I read- but have found no official record yet- was supposedly the very first Sheriff in the region. Very interesting.
Benedict Eshleman was a Swiss immigrant who immjgrated in 1720. He bought 600 acres in 1727 at the age of 18. He helped to settle the area known as Shenks Ferry. He also built multiple houses and founded the mennonite church in the area. During his lifetime, he became a successful farmer before dying at the age of 71 in 1780

At each of those gravestones, there was a day when several or many gathered to say farewell to a loved one. At every gravestone you looked at, I imagined people surrounding that site 250 or 300 years ago mourning the loss of a loved one or friend. Thankfully that cemetery hasn't been vandalized. Rest In Peace to all that are buried there......it seems like a peaceful part of the world.
I always think the same thing. My 2nd G.Grandma passed aged 30 leaving my G.Grandma aged 6. Most likely she was in attendance. Gives me bumps like you. It's like if you close your eyes then open they will be there. My G.Grandma would've been there multiple times coz her entire family is there except for her. ❤
It's mind blowing how many of these forgotten cemeteries there are. I know of 4 cemeteries that have been taken over and hidden by woods in Mississippi right now. Thank you for what you are doing here!
I know of three here in Oklahoma. One is so old the engravings on the tombstones are no longer readable. Worn almost smooth. Several have brass, bronze, or cast iron bed frames on top of the interned. Almost like a fence delineating the grave site. Several have field stones to mark the head and the foot of the grave. No inscriptions what so ever. All of them are totally encompassed by green briars, trees, and poison ivy. One is an all Black cemetery that holds the remains of ex-slaves. The youngest death date is from the late 1890’s. Others go back to the 1870’s. The landowner asked that I not tell anyone where it is located, not even the State, for fear some idiots will try to destroy the tombstones if word gets out as to where it is located.

Michael, Hang on to your faith in God and Jesus and their words. Trying to bring others to God is our job, but be prepared for those that do not believe and never will. You'll only receive ridicule and anger, and hate from them. This is nothing new though. Jesus warned his disciples about this exact situation in his sermon on the mount - Matthew 7.6. His message was, at some point you have know when and to whom to offer the good news, and when to not bother.
When you read their names off the grave stones, you are giving them recognition. You are giving recognition that they once lived. Words and names have power.
I love finding old cemeteries. The farm fields where I grew up always had one lone tree in the middle of the field. More often than not there would be a family cemetery under the tree.
One of my favorite messages is From Anna Strong a spy in George Washington's list of Spies, Living well beyond 1776 on Her Grave she says "TIME, how short!" I'll never forget that.........
I found a pair of small headstones in the Southeast corner of my property years ago. Middle of woods, no other signs. After a lot of questions I determined the old road bed ran close to that spot during the 1800s when the entire 8000 acre block belonged to one family. The couple I found were sharecroppers and had a cabin nearby. Given the year of departure it seems they were victims of a scarlet fever outbreak. I. Cleared the area a bit and made a natural fence, kept it cleaned up. Just two people, totally forgotten by time...rather sad actually...

The way the US is going at the moment, without these cemetries, people will start to believe the lies currently being told about who founded America and who actually built the country. Take it from somebody in the UK, physical momuments are important. Marked graves and the contents therein allow the lies to be disproved. People like to know to know where their ancestors came from and what they achieved.
Always be protective of cemeteries. They are a final resting place for some. I am profoundly grateful you don't just openly list coordinates. This ground is sacred to ancestors of these people.

I've been to one of the oldest graveyards in the eastern US, the one next to the old church in Jamestown, VA. Graves dating to the early 1600's, with some of them, the more wealthy and influential people, buried under the floor of the church itself.
Honestly I love digging into history like this! Whenever I read a dead person's name or see a picture of them, I instantly wonder about how their life was during that time. Were they happy? Did they dream about anything? What was their biggest goal and fear? Did they have a family?
One of the saddest things is that most of the trees in this woods are far younger than some of the people buried there. In 1727 this was likely to have still been old growth, the understory would have been much clearer of plants and, by implication, it was logged off at least once despite being a location of graves. Maybe even twice.

I just looked on find a grave and they seemed to have pictures of most of the headstones- I wonder if there are any burial records in an archive somewhere to identify the unmarked graves?
@@netdog713 Lancaster County Historical Society has information on this cemetery that was recorded in the 1940's containing the names on all the inscribed headstones. There was no church associated with this cemetery and therefore no church records will be found for identifying the other 60 souls buried there.
@charlie cheeseface I have chosen to leave the weeds grow to the height of the stones to hide them from vandals, and they are less noticeable to trespassers. I keep the trees from encroaching on the cemetery.

@@rjc7289 birth certificates or death certificates unlikely at the time. Baptisms records more likely, or family Bible entries. Records like dcs weren't used in the old days, especially in rural areas.
RJC 72 The further back in time you go, the less frequent the records will get. If you weren't notable, your best chance to be recorded at all was through a baptism, marriage, or death record. Like, part of my family tree stops in the 1840s because that's where the paper trail ends. A chunk of my ancestors have been lost to time apparently

A great old cemetery WW! I've been there a few times years ago and the first time it was very overgrown. Fortunately it looks in far better shape now I also remember some sunken graves so they were apparently filled in. Those who destroy these sacred sights are very much disrespecting our ancestors who came before us and suffered so many hardships that makes our lives of today so easy. My background is mostly from Europe and a little from here. When I was young and watched the cowboy and Indian movies, I was always for the Indians. I feel bitterness about how the Indigenous Peoples were treated, raped, killed, sold into slavery and treated as if they were not even human beings. And Human Beings who live with and within Spirit. I agree. But they are resting in absolute peace. It's better than resting in an old cemetery surrounded by a new strip mall or in the middle of a bustling city going completely unnoticed by the thousands of people who drive or walk by every day.

Those are some of my ancestors on my mother’s side. Her mom was an Eshelman, her father a Replogle. Both families settled the west together. I will be in Philly July 2024 so I’m planning a side trip to this remarkable spot. Thank you for sharing.

Who would have thought that someone who died over 200 years ago would have their name mentioned on RUclips for over 200,000 people to hear and see. These people may have been largely forgotten, but because of you, we know who they were and when they were put to rest. I think they would be proud.
There's one in Summerville in the middle of a development. No old buildings left, just the small cemetary preserved behind a brick wall and gate in a roundabout. Oldest I saw was 1820.
You might consider taking large sheets of paper, some charcoal and doing some rubbings. You will be able to read them better and preserver the history.

Interesting video. The oldest cemetery I've ever been in is a small non-descript plot near a busy intersection in Portsmouth, NH. It has graves from the 1600's. A lot of them were fisherman and family. It's not maintained, and as you walk around, the hump of the casket underground is obvious. I don't think they're down 6 feet. They must be stone of some kind because wood would have rotted years ago.
I'm an old retired land surveyor and have wandered many an old cemetery in my past... now waiting for my turn to be put in one. Hopefully that won't be for a few more yrs. The ones that were the most interesting to me were the old family cemeteries sitting in a secluded spot on some old farm. One day while surveying a parcel I was on an old stone road in some woods and a hwy worker was driving by and stopped for a chat. He was interested in what I was doing and I told him and he then related to me that there was an old cemetery in the woods we were by. He told me he was wandering in the woods just off the road and stumbled on a few marker stones. I asked him where and he took me for a walk but we didn't find anything in the short time I had to 'spare'. The historical society of the county has a map showing all the old cemeteries but it didn't have one for that location. Every time I read or see an article or video on cemeteries I think back to that day and I get the longing to go back and spend some time looking for it. It's private property so I would have to look up the owner and get permission, which is what everyone should do before entering a property. I see so many videos on utoob about people that explore 'abandoned' homes and it makes me so mad because there is no such thing as abandoned property! Someone, even if it's a bank or as a last resort, the county because of non payment of taxes, owns that property and if you don't have permission to go on it you are trespassing! Always get permission... the county auditor will know the owner. And with more and more counties putting this info online you can just find it there!

My grandma wants told me as long as somebody remembers someone who's passed that Soul would live forever. So if said person who passed was forgotten their spirit would die. I think it's amazing that you were remembering all these people each time you point it at one of those nobody call fieldstones or whatever he's kindly pointed we didn't see no names remember that person that person was remembered and you brought that Spirit back to life that's what I think is awesome

Whenever I see old photos or when I tour a cemetery I often wonder, who were they? What did they love, hate, dream. What was their biggest fear, or greatest achievement. What did their voice sound like? Who will remember me?
My father passed away in April 2018 and I cant remember what his voice sounded like. Ive tried to recall. No one is going to erect monuments to us. We lived, loved worked and died just like millions of people before us.
I often wonder the same thoughts about them.

A few years ago I visited my long ago relatives in Bethlehem, Pa. They were the original settlers of the town of Bethlehem. They were Moravians and escaped from Czechoslovakia(not called that back then) in the 1700's. I saw my 5xs great grandfather's grave! It was incredible.
Remarkable...she'd be proud her 5x great granddaughter paid homage to her and her genes still live on.
I'm hoping to do the same thing sometime soon. My 6th great grandparents were the original settlers of Chillisquaque across from Sunbury and Shamokin' off of the Susquehanna River. I haven't found any records of where they are buried yet. Hoping to very soon. It would really something to be able to visit them. My 6th great grandfather served in the Revolutionary War there and from an article that I read- but have found no official record yet- was supposedly the very first Sheriff in the region. Very interesting.
My great grandparents escaped communism in Czechoslovakia. They settled in bucks county.
Benedict Eshleman was a Swiss immigrant who immjgrated in 1720. He bought 600 acres in 1727 at the age of 18. He helped to settle the area known as Shenks Ferry. He also built multiple houses and founded the mennonite church in the area. During his lifetime, he became a successful farmer before dying at the age of 71 in 1780
Fascinating to think that those people lived around the time of the Declaration of Independence.

It's now an $18 billion dollar a year industry in the US alone! I prefer to be buried unembalmed in just a shroud in a natural burial plot. .. that way I can give SOMETHING back to the earth that has sustained me!

At each of those gravestones, there was a day when several or many gathered to say farewell to a loved one. At every gravestone you looked at, I imagined people surrounding that site 250 or 300 years ago mourning the loss of a loved one or friend. Thankfully that cemetery hasn't been vandalized. Rest In Peace to all that are buried there......it seems like a peaceful part of the world.

I always think the same thing. My 2nd G.Grandma passed aged 30 leaving my G.Grandma aged 6. Most likely she was in attendance. Gives me bumps like you. It's like if you close your eyes then open they will be there. My G.Grandma would've been there multiple times coz her entire family is there except for her. ❤

It's mind blowing how many of these forgotten cemeteries there are. I know of 4 cemeteries that have been taken over and hidden by woods in Mississippi right now. Thank you for what you are doing here!
I know of three here in Oklahoma. One is so old the engravings on the tombstones are no longer readable. Worn almost smooth. Several have brass, bronze, or cast iron bed frames on top of the interned. Almost like a fence delineating the grave site. Several have field stones to mark the head and the foot of the grave. No inscriptions what so ever. All of them are totally encompassed by green briars, trees, and poison ivy. One is an all Black cemetery that holds the remains of ex-slaves. The youngest death date is from the late 1890’s. Others go back to the 1870’s. The landowner asked that I not tell anyone where it is located, not even the State, for fear some idiots will try to destroy the tombstones if word gets out as to where it is located.
I have to tell you how much I love your videos. I used to walk through the woods all the time, now I have trouble walking because of knee and back issues. Watching your videos make me smile and help me “get away” for awhile. Thank you

Michael, Hang on to your faith in God and Jesus and their words. Trying to bring others to God is our job, but be prepared for those that do not believe and never will. You'll only receive ridicule and anger, and hate from them. This is nothing new though. Jesus warned his disciples about this exact situation in his sermon on the mount - Matthew 7.6. His message was, at some point you have know when and to whom to offer the good news, and when to not bother.
When you read their names off the grave stones, you are giving them recognition. You are giving recognition that they once lived. Words and names have power.

I love finding old cemeteries. The farm fields where I grew up always had one lone tree in the middle of the field. More often than not there would be a family cemetery under the tree.
One of my favorite messages is From Anna Strong a spy in George Washington's list of Spies, Living well beyond 1776 on Her Grave she says "TIME, how short!" I'll never forget that.........
I'm in New England. Small and large graveyards are all over. Many dating back to the 1600's.

I found a pair of small headstones in the Southeast corner of my property years ago. Middle of woods, no other signs. After a lot of questions I determined the old road bed ran close to that spot during the 1800s when the entire 8000 acre block belonged to one family. The couple I found were sharecroppers and had a cabin nearby. Given the year of departure it seems they were victims of a scarlet fever outbreak. I. Cleared the area a bit and made a natural fence, kept it cleaned up. Just two people, totally forgotten by time...rather sad actually...

The way the US is going at the moment, without these cemetries, people will start to believe the lies currently being told about who founded America and who actually built the country. Take it from somebody in the UK, physical momuments are important. Marked graves and the contents therein allow the lies to be disproved. People like to know to know where their ancestors came from and what they achieved.

I've been to one of the oldest graveyards in the eastern US, the one next to the old church in Jamestown, VA. Graves dating to the early 1600's, with some of them, the more wealthy and influential people, buried under the floor of the church itself.

Honestly I love digging into history like this! Whenever I read a dead person's name or see a picture of them, I instantly wonder about how their life was during that time. Were they happy? Did they dream about anything? What was their biggest goal and fear? Did they have a family?
One of the saddest things is that most of the trees in this woods are far younger than some of the people buried there. In 1727 this was likely to have still been old growth, the understory would have been much clearer of plants and, by implication, it was logged off at least once despite being a location of graves. Maybe even twice.

@@netdog713 Lancaster County Historical Society has information on this cemetery that was recorded in the 1940's containing the names on all the inscribed headstones. There was no church associated with this cemetery and therefore no church records will be found for identifying the other 60 souls buried there.
@charlie cheeseface I have chosen to leave the weeds grow to the height of the stones to hide them from vandals, and they are less noticeable to trespassers. I keep the trees from encroaching on the cemetery.

RJC 72 The further back in time you go, the less frequent the records will get. If you weren't notable, your best chance to be recorded at all was through a baptism, marriage, or death record.
Like, part of my family tree stops in the 1840s because that's where the paper trail ends. A chunk of my ancestors have been lost to time apparently

A great old cemetery WW! I've been there a few times years ago and the first time it was very overgrown. Fortunately it looks in far better shape now I also remember some sunken graves so they were apparently filled in. Those who destroy these sacred sights are very much disrespecting our ancestors who came before us and suffered so many hardships that makes our lives of today so easy. Some of our ancestors were people who oppressed others, who mistreated others, who took advantage of others and who were just not "nice" or "respectable" people. We all probably have ancestors like that.

I feel bitterness about how the Indigenous Peoples were treated, raped, killed, sold into slavery and treated as if they were not even human beings. And Human Beings who live with and within Spirit. Those are some of my ancestors on my mother’s side. Her mom was an Eshelman, her father a Replogle. Both families settled the west together. I will be in Philly July 2024 so I’m planning a side trip to this remarkable spot. Thank you for sharing.

Nice video of a peaceful old cemetery. Some of those gravestones are in remarkably good shape and very legible given their age.
Who would have thought that someone who died over 200 years ago would have their name mentioned on RUclips for over 200,000 people to hear and see. These people may have been largely forgotten, but because of you, we know who they were and when they were put to rest. I think they would be proud.

There's one in Summerville in the middle of a development. No old buildings left, just the small cemetary preserved behind a brick wall and gate in a roundabout. Oldest I saw was 1820.
Im from charleston, Sc. Daniel island has a beautiful trail near the pier dating back to the mid 1700's I think.
You might consider taking large sheets of paper, some charcoal and doing some rubbings. You will be able to read them better and preserver the history.
You could also take a wire brush and scrub some of the detritus off,then take a rubbing.

Interesting video. The oldest cemetery I've ever been in is a small non-descript plot near a busy intersection in Portsmouth, NH. It has graves from the 1600's. A lot of them were fisherman and family. It's not maintained, and as you walk around, the hump of the casket underground is obvious. I don't think they're down 6 feet. They must be stone of some kind because wood would have rotted years ago.

I'm an old retired land surveyor and have wandered many an old cemetery in my past... now waiting for my turn to be put in one. Hopefully that won't be for a few more yrs. The ones that were the most interesting to me were the old family cemeteries sitting in a secluded spot on some old farm. One day while surveying a parcel I was on an old stone road in some woods and a hwy worker was driving by and stopped for a chat. He was interested in what I was doing and I told him and he then related to me that there was an old cemetery in the woods we were by. He told me he was wandering in the woods just off the road and stumbled on a few marker stones. I asked him where and he took me for a walk but we didn't find anything in the short time I had to 'spare'. The historical society of the county has a map showing all the old cemeteries but it didn't have one for that location. Every time I read or see an article or video on cemeteries I think back to that day and I get the longing to go back and spend some time looking for it. It's private property so I would have to look up the owner and get permission, which is what everyone should do before entering a property. I see so many videos on utoob about people that explore 'abandoned' homes and it makes me so mad because there is no such thing as abandoned property! Someone, even if it's a bank or as a last resort, the county because of non payment of taxes, owns that property and if you don't have permission to go on it you are trespassing! Always get permission... the county auditor will know the owner. And with more and more counties putting this info online you can just find it there!

My grandma wants told me as long as somebody remembers someone who's passed that Soul would live forever. So if said person who passed was forgotten their spirit would die. I think it's amazing that you were remembering all these people each time you point it at one of those nobody call fieldstones or whatever he's kindly pointed we didn't see no names remember that person that person was remembered and you brought that Spirit back to life that's what I think is awesome
