    Really neat! I used to work on 70's era fishbowls and, for me, it's so strange to hear one with a 92 series engine instead of the 71 series! I'm glad that our Canadian friends showed little interest in the RTS and continued ordering fishbowls from GMC for some more years during the 80s. I'm glad that this classic is still running.

      @@deborahchesser7375 I drive for King County Metro Transit and I can attest that the is completely true. We have buses still in the fleet that are at least 15 years old and in some cases close to 20. City transit buses by and large travel between 700 to 1000 miles per week and 35k to 50K miles each year and some of those top 700,000 miles on the odometer. Yes, these vehicles lead a hard life and it shows. Hence they fall under the category of severe duty vehicles. I give many thanks to the mechanics in our fleet as well as others for the excellent work they do keeping these vehicles breakdown free for the most part.

    156 was one of five Alaska New Looks purchased for Guelph Transit. I remember riding 156 many times on the a few routes along with 152-155. Sadly 156 might be the only Alaska unit left in its condition. I did see it back in 2013 and I haven't seen it since. I would love to see it one last time!

    That bus reminds me to the movie called "Speed".

    • @josephheston9238
      @josephheston9238 6 лет назад +1

      That movie utilized 3 different buses. A TDH-5303, a T6H-5305, and a T6H-4518 refitted with the later tail and marker lights (Yes, it switches from 40' to 35' and back again). I remember when that movie first aired on Fox, they were giving away the Bus. I really wanted to win that bus. I would have painted it Philadelphia Eagles' colors and used it as a tailgating bus. Now I doubt if there's many Fishbowls left, even a junkyard rescue.

    The engine sounds good, and started fairly quick. The bus looks to be in rough condition, which is surprising. When I was living in the northeast this New Look bus was quite common and the city bus lines kept them in very good repair throughout their service life. Not sure where that one came from but it does not look like it was well cared for.

    • @Vicsonvee
      @Vicsonvee  8 лет назад +1

      +Emph Squee This bus has basically sat since 2007. The engine is Ok but has had it's moments, I guess - body needs a fair bit of work. The under cartage - I have repaired extensively, but don't know it's condition since it has been 2 years since I had the wheels off. I don't know what I am going to do with the thing as of yet. This bus was a dream, but I think the dream may have passed.

    I used to have a 1985 Diesel VW Jetta. It would always start in the cold if the glow plugs were good. I got it started when it was down to zero degrees. I just had to cycle the glow plugs about 3 times it also had a cold start lever you pulled to adjust the fuel injection pump. Was a great car but you had to get almost everything for it from a dealer. For example I had to get a thermostat once. This is usually about a $10 part at the the parts store I had to get it from the dealer $80.....ouch.... I bought it with 55,000 miles and i put over 200,000 miles on it and it got around 55 mpg. not much power but great on mpg. Eventually the fuel injection pump went out and it was $600 for a rebuilt one so I just got rid of it and bought a 1998 Hyundai Elantra that I put over 200,000 miles it was also a good car and parts from the dealer were pretty cheap. I would buy another Hyundai just because parts are cheap and they are good cars. I never had any problems. I just had to do normal maintaice and had to get a coil pack once.

    • @Vicsonvee
      @Vicsonvee  7 лет назад

      You can crank the shit out of these old Detroit's and you will get is nothing but a burnt up starter. You have to cycle them, as I do in this start up and you will achieve your goal, of starting the machine in cold conditions.

    • @jimmyaber5920
      @jimmyaber5920 5 лет назад

      The fuel from first start attempt wets the cyl walls and rings and seals the pistons better so the cylinder pressure is high to light off fuel then. Many old tractors and trucks had diesel fuel dripped into intake and those had the same process. You open fuel drip (some had electric valve, some were ballcocks) and then crank it, wait and then crank it for it to start up. Early days of larger Diesel engines you started a gasoline “pony” motor then engaged a clutch and turned over the diesel with engine shutoff lever 8n off position. You’d let the engine turn for 6-10 seconds then move stop lever and it would start running and then declutch and shut down pony motor. Old diesels were not turn, start, go.

    If anyone has a GM I was hopping if they could make video and doing charters with them that are from 1984-86 not from 1959-83 because I've seen enough GM's already I want to ride the newest ones if any one has one I love the young GM's and the older ones too as well and they don't make parts for them anymore like they use to!!!

    • @Vicsonvee
      @Vicsonvee  8 лет назад +1

      These engines in these buses were specifically designed for the GM "New Look" series of buses. The oil pan is completely flat under the motor and the top 3 cylinders are basically straight vertical with the pan, while the remaining three are slanted to the front.

    • @Wingnut353
      @Wingnut353 7 лет назад

      2 stroke detroits don't really care... some of the inline models were even ran sideways in military applications. The gama goat engine I have does have slight modifications to it's oiling system apparently it can pull oil from the front or the back of the pan.... so it doesn't run out of oil on steep inclines etc expected of a 6x6 vehicle. the oil is pumped to the places it needs to go.. and the only gotcha is that the oil must be flowing into the pump.... which means they'ld just modify the oil pickup to be at the lowest point whatever the application.

    what have you been doing to this bus lately

    • @Vicsonvee
      @Vicsonvee  9 лет назад +1

      I have been doing lots of repairs to the bus. The steel frame on the rear wheel wells needed lots of work. I had to replace all four air bellows mounts and weld a good gusset in; for the frame had a big crack. I also needed to repair a rotten spot in the floor of the bus. I have been working on repairing all the fluorescent light ad display signs inside. Looks like I need a few new 12V ballasts for the to get them working again. From setting for several years, lots of the electrical connections has corroded. Both the main bus fan motors for heat, were sized and not working. Both have been repaired. I am hoping to eventually restore the bus back to how it was, when it was a transit bus. I have spent a lot of my free time repairing stuff. The bus still needs a left front centre windshield and I am hoping to get that sometime in the spring. Also needs four of the side passenger window panes to be replaced. I hope this reply helps you on what I have been doing with the bus :)

      ***** Well even though it was manufactured in Canada (Fishbowl production stopped in 1979 in the U.S.), judging by the single-stream center door, it may have been owned by a U.S. operator (but I could be wrong).

      GMC New Look Production in U.S. is from 1959-1977.
      Flexible New Look Production is from 1962-1978.
      Canadian GMC New Look Production is from 1962-1986.
      The Grand total of the New Look Production is 59,000 New Look Buses.

      I OWN THIS BUS. I HAVE ALL THE PAPER WORK AND IT'S QUITE CLEAR.....: THIS BUS WAS MADE IN MAY OF 1984, IN THE LONDON ONTARIO CANADA BUS MANUFACTURING FACILITY, OK. This date is on my insurance papers, my ownership and the name plate mounted directly on the front dash of this bus. For the 15th time, I own the bus solely and I know its history.

      No, a '64 would be a TDH-5303. GM Canada was still producing Fishbowls up until '86. Also, the big giveaway between a U.S. and a Canadian Fishbowl is that the U.S. Fishbowl the trapezoid badge says "GMC" while the Canadian Fishbowl the badge says "GM".

    Why not start it up from the inside

      You can start it from the inside. The outside start is usually used for diagnostics or shop personnel.
