    You don't want the best in class for a manager, you want someone who is suited for NT management. Spain's manager was not the best in class at any point in his career, but he is well suited for it, he knows the players, he knows the league, he knows how to build a team and make it work with modern tactics. That's who England need.

    • @ComradeOgilvy1984
      @ComradeOgilvy1984 Месяц назад +3

      Yours is a solid line of reasoning. You do not need a great club manager. You need a manager who can build a coherent national style, and is astute and flexible enough to adapt to the personnel and situtation on hand.
      For all the criticism of Southgate's boring football, Gareth's general approach is not very different from Didier DesChamps, because boring defensive football works well at the international level, as there is little opportunity to coach much more sophisticated systems.

    • @adrianlloyd6403
      @adrianlloyd6403 Месяц назад

      Good common sense approach in my view.Southgate said England lost to Spain because we didn't keep the ball well enough.That indicates to me that the team isn't gelling well ,the tactics are poor, the players aren't good enough or the wrong squad players are picked.England continually lose to the 'top' nations because we have this inability to retain good ball possession as a team.The Spanish squad was picked from a few Spanish clubs and so their players are more used to playing together.Knowing how to build a team and to make it work is the only way we are ever going to win anything,starting with a decent big athletic keeper (if there's an English one out there).

    • @ComradeOgilvy1984
      @ComradeOgilvy1984 Месяц назад

      @@adrianlloyd6403 It boils down to Southgate's strange choices for this tournament.
      It is simply not true these players are incapable of holding the ball well. Sure, they are a team that we do not expect to be top tier in the possession statistic, but English teams even under Southgate in previous tournaments showed respectable numbers in the possession statistics against other strong teams. That Italy had such high possession numbers in the 2021 final was an outlier due to Southgate's decision to try and defend a slim lead for 85 minutes. That Italian team was very good, of course, but they were not destined to dominate possession unless Southgate decided to let them.

    • @Andrea.df.
      @Andrea.df. Месяц назад

      @@adrianlloyd6403having possession =/ playing well, y'all need to follow everything pep says and think a little for once. Foden is great at keeping the ball but he does nothing with it in England, having the ball is useless if you can't attack effectively. Most international managers don't have complicated tactics or are Great tacticians, you have 6 days with the team before the first match so there is no point in overcomplicating things. The issue with England is that every player is playing a different type of football when they are on the pitch, they look disjointed. Foden is trying to have 90% possession and short passes like City, Jude is trying to have a dynamic attack playing off 2 other players like at Madrid and Kane is dropping deep and not moving.

    We've had two finals and a semi through Southgate so apart from winning a trophy, the bar has been set high for the new incoming manager.
    Many may disagree but Southgate should have stayed, fine tuned the squad further still, and made whatever changes were deemed necessary.
    If the new manager fails to reach a semi or the final at the next tournament then his head will roll and fans will probably say, "oh well, at least under Southgate we could reach finals".
