Hello, Jay! Thank you for the incredible review. As a fellow voice actor and mic reviewer, I love your honest, practical, and non-gate keeping take on reviewing mics. It's very refreshing that you give mics a chance, even if they aren't what you usually find in studios. Please keep up the amazing work!

Just recently discovered this channel. Great review! Love the blind test. Love playing "Guess the Mic: The Home Game". 😄

I figured I was going to be able to pick up which one was which pretty easily but I was wrong lol, I did like a the best and I thought the last one was the five fine but I wasn't 100% sure until you said but yeah, they all three sound good

Thanks for these great, in-depth reviews, sir. The fifine seems quite good! Definately seems brighter than the other two, and the earthworks seems a tad muffled? Or just maybe more acoustic treatment on the pop filter. The SM7B sounds good as it always does, the old workhorse. Granted, I'm listening on my phone speaker, so take that for what it's worth. I also have never used condensers other than for live performances, so I'm also biased there. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for taking the time to write! Yeah the ETHOS tends darker with the pop filter but generally takes well to EQ. And the Fifine doesn't have much in the way of 'foam' for its plosive rejection relative to the other two, which may account for its brightness.

I feel like the take away points from all these type of tests is that as long as you have a decent mic with a decent noise floor, the differences can be eq-able, especially when needed for professional productions like film vo etc I don’t think the audience will be able to be able to tell the difference between any mic you are using as long as the right post processing is correct. Am I wrong or way off here my good man?

To a degree. Post production in most professional work shouldn’t be relied on to “fix” things. Once you move into higher level professional work (i.e. animated shows, major ad campaigns, bigger audiobook titles, etc.) the differences and quality levels compound. These will largely be undetectable to the average listener, but in a game of inches it all adds up down the road. Do you need a $3k mic? No. Is an $89 mic good for most stuff? Probably. The general opinion is that mics from ~$300-800 are going to give the most bang for the buck, above that you’re into boutique and high level professional territory and below that and you’ll find the quality of mics is spotty at times.

@@jaymyersvoiceover well take like the road NT one for example. I hear it compared a lot to u 87 and it is so close. Is there really any job out there even in the best of Hollywood films that require voices and CGI that a rodeNT one couldn’t do just as good a job? Thanks for indulging me. I appreciate your time.

Sure! A lot of that’s true. When you’re talking Hollywood and the like, a fair amount can come down to ubiquity of certain mics in recording studios. The U87ai has been the industry standard for so long that many studios use it because of its quality but also it’s in every studio in the world pretty much, making consistent sound easy and predictable.
