- Ralph McQuarrie, concept artist of the original Star Wars trilogy, was essential in bringing the characters, ships, and locales of a galaxy far, far away to life. In this special retrospective, Star Wars creator George Lucas, Industrial Light & Magic effects legend Dennis Muren, and many others discuss the impact of McQuarrie, his artistic gifts, and his legacy.
This is part of the Ralph McQuarrie tribute Dreams and Visions Press produced for Star Wars Celebration VI in 2012, drawing from interviews conducted for a feature length documentary on Ralph McQuarrie that is currently in production. Развлечения
Immense, exciting, timeless. There's nothing quite like Ralph McQuarrie's art.
This guy is an artistic genius.
His work should be in an art gallery.
Always enjoyed his work
Just imagine how different the films would have been had any other artist lent his/her own interpretation.
And I still have all my Empire Strikes Back cards from when I was a kid. The McQuarrie cards were always my favourite.
OH YES ITS FABULOUS.
I was an illustrator in the movies for over 20 years. This guy was the reason why.
What movies did you work on?
Nathan Young Nothing that famous, mostly New York indi films some MTV videos and a few commercials.
Nice still cool
I actually had the good fortune of meeting Mr. McQuarrie in Denver Colorado back in 1996. When I told him how much I loved his work, he thanked me, and went on to engage me - just a fan - in a conversation about the various concepts he did for the original trilogy. Such a humble human being, and a true class act. What a thrill it was to have such a relaxed conversation him, the man who designed the very look and feel of my favourite film series. I will always remember that day. His work is truly inspiring. Thank you Ralph. We miss you
what specifically did he say
Every time I look at Ralph's paintings it gives me goosbumps :)
Star Wars Trinity:
1. The Father George Lucas
2. The Son Ralph McQuarrie
3. The Spirit John Williams
And prophet Ben Burt
The three wise men
Denis Murren, Joe Johnson, Phil Tippet
The Saint Marcia Lucas
Yes, all these people are fantastic but lets be honest - everyone in the credits contributed to making Star Wars as epic as it is.
You are all forgetting Patriarch Gary Kurtz
Star Wars wouldn't have been the same without Ralph's work, it would be like taking John Williams' soundtrack away from the films.
It wouldn't have been made. Tbf.
R.I.P. Ralph McQuarrie
For a person like myself, who could never draw that well, Ralph McQuarrie inspired a 7 year old to doodle, endlessly trying to create fantastic scenes of my own to inhabit the Star Wars world with. Often imitated, never replicated, Ralph McQuarrie was legend - thankyou, Ralph, for helping inspire our imaginations and enabling us to never let go of our inner child selves :)
being an artist myself these are really inspiring. his paintings are really beautiful
Same here man! I love the sort of warm pastel look of all the movies and his paintings. It's probably why I'm drawn to using them so much, lol!
Some people quietly and humbly influence so many others, and change their lives immeasurably. Ralph McQuarrie was such a person. It's very difficult, to imagine what my life would be like, if he had never lived.
How about using some of that artwork that perhaps didn't get directly used, for inspirations on the designs for the upcoming films?
Yeah. Let´s hope they wont stop with that after Rebels...
You may have noticed they did something along the same lines for the early films and for the EU. Kamino, for example, has the flying manta rays McQuarrie had envisions for Bespin.
A majority of the unused art that McQuarrie created was used in The Clone Wars animated series and will be used in the upcoming show Star Wars Rebels!
The rolling droid in the force awakens trailer is apparently an early r2d2 design.
I saw a RM X-Wing once and it looked five times better than the X-Wings in the movies.
RIP Mr. McQuarrie, gone but never forgotten!
OH I certainly dig the art of Ralph McQuarrie. He and Syd Mead fall along the same lines of genius futurists. There are a couple more whom names I can't bring to mind. But I love their works.
I like Star Wars fan art and all that, but whenever I see Ralph's work, I can see the movies in my mind... Lucas may have started Star Wars, but McQuarrie brought it to life!
Amazing Artwork.
Congratulations!
Ralph I feel, was what was missing from the Prequels. I just hope the sequels can live up to these amazing concepts.
What did you think these seven years later?

Outstanding tribute to a true STAR WARS visionary!
Not many artists could tell stories with a picture like Ralph McQuarrie did.
Amazing art work
Amazing. What an artist
Thank you
Great video!
Awesome!
Amazing. No Ctrl+Z crutch needed!
Wonderful
Awesome....
I didn't know he also painted the set backgrounds. No wonder they still hold up
But if you read the books "The Making of..." Ralph McQuarrie only stayed/supplied art for Star Wars and a bit for Empire before jumping ship due in part to the fact that he felt he was no longer clicking with George's vision for the films. Joe Johnston and others also providing conceptual art for the films basically overtook him as the go to guy for the look of the films vehicles & creatures. He was instrumental for the 1st one but quickly lost ground to the younger guys at ILM come Empire & Jedi (where he basically disappeared from the scene). There's a little story in the Making of Jedi book where George threw him a party/acknowledgement to his contributions BUT unbeknown to him McQuarrie had already left the show since George was more often than not stamping "Like" on the other artist's work than McQuarrie's.
Nice

This guy!
that is genius, so remember that when you want to bash Lucas!
One of his stormtrooper armor designs was in the bad batch episode war mantle
man i miss stuff like this in movies, practical real effects and actual painted physical concept art. this is what made stars wars so great and now in this day and age of the digital revolution and cgi that soul has been lost....why ? might one ask, well look at it in this way...for the most part i myself can spot cgi a mile away. yes it has greatly improved over the years and it will continue to do so. and i love really great cgi in movies. it does indeed add a depth that practical effects can not but you can still tell its there no matter how good it is. on the other hand practical effects, well built sets and props add the elements cgi can not. those elements being the realness of it. when watching a movie if sets and props are built well do you stop and say oh wow look how good that fake tree looks ? no i dont think so. do you ask i wonder where the found that cave to film in ? no i dont think so. why ? because its real, its tangible. if george lucas ever would have recalled that spirit and wrote a better script then the prequels would no doubt be on the level of the originals. so practical effects and ralph mcquarrie may be gone but they wont be forgotten, at least not by me. any thoughts and replys let me hear what you think :) and yes i know these videos are not about the prequels but things just kinda segued there lol
Guy is a genius.
I LOVE STAR WARS!! But now I am very sad because of the end Clone Wars show and some games that are shutting down! :'(
I would say Fantasia would be the closest to this guys art actually in motion as a cartoon. his colors and brush strokes, the backrounds are so rich and full, nothing like modern imagery
what about colin cantwell wasn't he like the guy who made almost all of the ships into models?
Name of the song?
aw
I'm surprised Ray Harryhausen was not used in the Star Wars films .
At 3:06 I am pretty sure that's Conan O'Brien.
What the fuck happened to George's neck
he got rich! personal chef please?
Someone shoved the prequels down his throat
Accept no substitutes :D
Some Ralphs arts looks better, than some things in films . . .
Love RM but it pains me that Joe Johnston gets so ignored.... despite him redesigning the Colin Cantwell models, helping make and paint those models then RM reworking his paintings afterwards to fit the dirty look that Joe Johnston defined. RM's published ESB and ROTJ 'Portfolios' were painted after the look of the movie was defined and partially filmed. They're not really concept art. While if you look at Joe Johnstons story boards... That looks like what we see on the screen. It just isn't all painted to look pretty after the fact.
No one even close. The title of concept designer is his alone.
Did he die? Hopefully not, I was just wondering.
Yes, he did. He died on March 3, 2012.
Storm Chaser Ah, ok. Thanks for letting me know.
R.I.P Ralph McQuarrie.
Through out the interviews they keep showing artwork but it looks like artwork made...from the movie! It doesn't look like real storyboards, they are too finished, detailed and show exact scenes showed in the actual movie. It makes no sense. Real storyboards are rough sketches, often black and white, with very few details. The pictures we are shown are full color, very details and final. Now I'm not doubting that the guy did what they say he did, but for the purpose of the 'documentary' apparently they chose final drawings, clean cut, which were probably made after the movie, reproductions of scenes. It would have been more interesting to see rougher, simpler black and white sketches with no details. Would have been more artistic.
I think you mix up two terms here. Ralph did the concept art, storyboards are not the same thing.
You're actually dead wrong. As far as I can tell, everything they showed is concept art, pre-production. They're not storyboards, they're concepts. Ideas. Some of this art was made even BEFORE the final script to pitch the film, which they say. That's the point: Ralph was so good at putting George's vision on canvas, a lot of the time they just copied it exactly! They even address your point directly at 5:01 . And besides, I've seen storyboards that are incredibly detailed art. It depends on the artist.
PS Some of his concepts were sketches too. They're just ridiculously good sketches. io9.com/5568011/ralph-mcquarrie-god-of-star-wars-concept-art/
Ralph should design George Lucas a neck :)
He did he used it for Jabba the Hutt
well..George isn't looking very healthy unfortunately, but at least he's not going bald!
ralph died
Dennis needs to loose the hair.
this is one of the main reasons you cannot re-create star wars, it was based on true art, painters with deep talent. Nowadays the new films are heavily inspired by asian art-forms, anime which is trash art that uses heavy black outline instead of shading and talent to convey images. Not to mention very non-realistic characters from Anime that are cartoon-like and overly dramatic or obsessed with ignorant plotlines.
George WHY did you sold Star Wars WHY!!!!!!
DISNEY SUCKS!!
They will put in the 7th Star Wars film a Mickey Mouse! And then I will rage!!
The Usa is in rapid decline and not giving us White male talent as before
