If I had the money I would definitely order ur kids grow kit n a grow pots for them but We having a hard time right now. Im battling breast cancer so not able to work n so thought maybe a garden would help me n take some Stress of things bc my late my love her garden. N we lost my daddy Valentine’s Day so life just keep trying to keep me down but I’m gonna try to keep on fight! I hope I’m doing everything right with this garden tho I did a lot of research tho. My cantaloupes they don’t look too good and my kids love cucumbers but they don’t look too good and then the squash doesn’t look too my kids wanted watermelon but we can’t find it no where . But but my tomato are doing great, n strawberries are also!

Yes, I am growing sugar baby watermelon and honey dew melon in 20 pound smart pots on trellises. 2nd Summer growing. My first year I got to harvest one honey dew melon. Yummy! This year I am trying both.
Good afternoon from GA. Planted my baby watermelon from seed in container seconds ago. Put the tomato trellis in too. I am excited to see their growth. I also planted my veggies green 🫘 🥕 🥬lettuce 🍅 🥬kale and sun flower 🌸 in a 3 level garden 🛏. The beans have leaves and the tomatoes are coming thru soil. I follow you and use your tips too. My biggest problem with growing melons and cucumbers is that the ground squirrels and small birds eat the leaves. I tried using bird netting, but one of the smaller finches got caught and after the drama of cutting it loose I had to give up on the bird netting.
Hi Jeff - so frustrating! Bet it was tough getting that bird cut loose! I use tulle fabric to cover my at risk crops - it has tiny holes, no risk of birds getting caught. I can’t even put the tomatoes out yet! Yikes. My last frost is usually the first couple weeks in April. Your hair looks good that way. 😊

Hi Kim! I planted the Orange Tendersweet, Sugar Baby and Petite Yellow, I had 99% germination for the small ones but the Orange tendersweet developed roots but no seedlings have emerged. I am not sure how old the seeds were but any tips on how to get the big ones started? I used a seed mat, humidity dome and lights. This really is perfect timing, thanks in advance! I’m also going to try Moon and Stars, I am really excited.
Hi Cynthia, sorry your having trouble with the big ones! I plant my large varieties the exact same way I plant the Sugar Babies. I use my DIY seed starting mix (bit.ly/CaliKimDIYCheapSeedStartingMix) in 6 pack seed cells under grow lights. I never use a heat mat for melons, but if your house is cold, that will help them germinate faster. I personally don't like humidity domes - they make my seedlings too hot, causes mold, and disease issues. Hope this helps and good luck! 🍉 20% off with code “watermelon” at calikimgardenandhome.com. I planted about a dozen sugar baby seeds in a 30 gallon container and 11 seeds germinated. I have thinned it down to 3 vines but wonder if I should take out 1 more. Any thoughts? Zone 7A

Hey Kim, new viewer here. I’m getting ready to get my new garden ready for watermelons and tomatoes a little ways away. Some nice compost and worm castings mixed well in the soil. Should I throw in some blood meal right before the new seeds go in? Also was thinking about getting good dirt plant food for fertilizer and when leaves begin I’ll use the worm casting tea. How often should I fertilize with both? Should I switch or add bone meal into compost I’ll add during grow and water with fish emulsion for fertilizer? Just trying to get an idea on when and what to fertilize these crops with throughout their growing period, thanks!

Can you move an established watermelon plant to a trellis? It's starting to take over my backyard lol.

How much do you water after watermelon after flowering?
If I had the money I would definitely order ur kids grow kit n a grow pots for them but We having a hard time right now. Im battling breast cancer so not able to work n so thought maybe a garden would help me n take some
Stress of things bc my late my love her garden. N we lost my daddy Valentine’s Day so life just keep trying to keep me down but I’m gonna try to keep on fight! I hope I’m doing everything right with this garden tho I did a lot of research tho. My cantaloupes they don’t look too good and my kids love cucumbers but they don’t look too good and then the squash doesn’t look too my kids wanted watermelon but we can’t find it no where . But but my tomato are doing great, n strawberries are also!

Yes, I am growing sugar baby watermelon and honey dew melon in 20 pound smart pots on trellises. 2nd Summer growing. My first year I got to harvest one honey dew melon. Yummy! This year I am trying both.
Good afternoon from GA. Planted my baby watermelon from seed in container seconds ago. Put the tomato trellis in too. I am excited to see their growth. I also planted my veggies green 🫘 🥕 🥬lettuce 🍅 🥬kale and sun flower 🌸 in a 3 level garden 🛏. The beans have leaves and the tomatoes are coming thru soil. I follow you and use your tips too. My biggest problem with growing melons and cucumbers is that the ground squirrels and small birds eat the leaves. I tried using bird netting, but one of the smaller finches got caught and after the drama of cutting it loose I had to give up on the bird netting.
Hi Jeff - so frustrating! Bet it was tough getting that bird cut loose! I use tulle fabric to cover my at risk crops - it has tiny holes, no risk of birds getting caught. Check out my May Garden Tour video - you'll see it there. It's available at any fabric store, and very inexpensive. Keep me posted!

I can’t even put the tomatoes out yet! Yikes. My last frost is usually the first couple weeks in April. Your hair looks good that way. 😊

Hi Kim! I planted the Orange Tendersweet, Sugar Baby and Petite Yellow, I had 99% germination for the small ones but the Orange tendersweet developed roots but no seedlings have emerged. I am not sure how old the seeds were but any tips on how to get the big ones started? I used a seed mat, humidity dome and lights. This really is perfect timing, thanks in advance! I’m also going to try Moon and Stars, I am really excited.
Hi Cynthia, sorry your having trouble with the big ones! I plant my large varieties the exact same way I plant the Sugar Babies. I use my DIY seed starting mix (bit.ly/CaliKimDIYCheapSeedStartingMix) in 6 pack seed cells under grow lights. I never use a heat mat for melons, but if your house is cold, that will help them germinate faster. I personally don't like humidity domes - they make my seedlings too hot, causes mold, and disease issues. Hope this helps and good luck!

I planted about a dozen sugar baby seeds in a 30 gallon container and 11 seeds germinated. I have thinned it down to 3 vines but wonder if I should take out 1 more. Any thoughts? Zone 7A
Hi Randy - great that you had such good germination! I think 3 vines should do fine in a 30 gallon, as long as you have a sturdy, tall trellis . Have fun!

Hey Kim, new viewer here. I’m getting ready to get my new garden ready for watermelons and tomatoes a little ways away. Some nice compost and worm castings mixed well in the soil. Should I throw in some blood meal right before the new seeds go in? Also was thinking about getting good dirt plant food for fertilizer and when leaves begin I’ll use the worm casting tea. How often should I fertilize with both? Should I switch or add bone meal into compost I’ll add during grow and water with fish emulsion for fertilizer? Just trying to get an idea on when and what to fertilize these crops with throughout their growing period, thanks!
Hi Daniel - welcome, so glad you're joining us on our garden journey! I recommend keeping it very simple with just a few soil amendments and fertilizers as I showed here. Yes you can direct sow. Actually it is an ideal way for melons
Yeah it’s better to sow directly since they suffer from transplant shock. But it’s up to you.
You'll love growing your own fresh, tasty watermelon, Jean! Yes you can, plant seeds right in a container. I like to do both seeds and seedlings, as I showed in the video. That way I have melons ready at different times. Let me know how it goes and thanks for the visit!
