Great video ! I've been using this beast with an RTX 2080 and doing C6 plots for a while now, one of the cheapest alternative for harvesting with 256gb of ram in Europe
I found using the final drive as temp a better choice in terms of total plotting time but it does require some fast drives to reduce the flushing time
Keep up the good work !
I have z640, which only has 2 six pin power connectors and a 4 pin molex. How can I power additional hard drives for a jbod?
Hello, Can I use a branded psu for this set up? I mean e.g. seasonic 750 gold. I want to use this as plotter and farmer. :) Thanks!
Can you please better explain how Gigahorse fee works? I have a 2PB farm and re plotted (compressed C7) up to 170Tib using same Keys as Chia node. A block was found, and it was used 100 percent as MAdMax fee, what is quite abusive for just 170Tib. And if at every 4 bloks one goes to him, it means we pay 3.5% plus full blocks? Will much appreciate if this can be clarified. I would like to ask MadMax directly but no idea where to. Thanks!
great job! I have question: if is possible to farm forks on compressed plot? Could you test few forks (stai, flora,venidium...)
The fork would double the workload for compressed farming, and that's a lot of unutilized farming capacity likely for a farmer. Could you? Yes at some tradeoff level. I think most won't however as it means they likely undercompressed in order to do so.
I'm a retired Engineer and like tinkering. I want to learn plotting. You seem to have the best Chia youtube channel. This is a great video. I need to pull all the hardware and code to build this system. I have been in Crypto mining for a year and 1/2. I am really enjoying the crypto tech!!
Welcome aboard!
I'm running the command to check the maximum farm size but doesn't show me the maths of total size to be able to farm, just the raw time values. ¿why i'm doing wrong? Thanks

Entry level peanut brain chia explorer.
Like the videos, currently playing with a T5810 and want to set up disk array.
Playing with evergreen miner to get familiar with chia as well. Thanks for videos.
Hi, I have two questions. First, how can I know my HP z620 is v1 or v2? I can only get 128gb working on it so I guess it’s v1. The cpu is e5 2620
And what version ubuntu will work on it? I try latest version but it’s not installed.
Thanks
You need a V2 CPU to enable 256GB. Ubuntu 20.04 is a good option for older hardware.
I am new to chia mining and like to ask if I use this computer to plot do I need an high spec computer to farm as well?
after plot, it can not framing by chia program but should be framing by massmax chia, right?
Love it. Thanks
How can the z420 support 256gb ram when google says max memory supports 64gb?
Great video! Just want to check the memory details? Ddr3 4rx4 or 2rx4
And is possible to use a pcie to nvme adapter card so I can use the nvme ssd on it? Thanks
DDR3 RDIMM and 4x is what you are most likely to find in a reasonable price. Yes you can use a cheap pcie/nvme adapter to a PCIe3 nvme on the cheap.
@@DigitalSpaceport thanks for answering my question. I am just bought a cheap hp z620 and looking for ram and other parts right now
Great content as always! Is that a LSI-9207-8E? Since you didn't mention it in the video. Keep making these good stuffs! Love from Hong Kong.
Oh yeah it's a 9207-8e
Will Gigahorse plots be recognized with Chia 2.0.0
Hi. i have 8 X 32gb ddr3 with 1600 mhz.but it only runs at 800mhz, which is slow as f...
New to chia, have been farming with GPUs for a few years but wanted to diversify my mining before the next upswing.
never a bad plan
I dont understand why you have a red light , intel specs for the 1607 v2 says max memory supported is 256gb. Im wait for my z420 (1620 v1) and probably need to buy another CPU in that case
Is it possible to use the plotmanager to remove uncompressed plots for the purpose of replotting?
Checkout a repo called Chia Garden by EFNATS it has a replacement tool
Super new to chia. Bought evergreen to get started, thinking of building a plotter
Z420 is a really decent rig to start with for a plotter + farmer combo you want a 3060 12GB
Is solo mining or pool mining more profitable, do you think .xch forks make money? In addition, which xch fork should we dig? thanks.
The A2000 also comes in a 12GB version and runs at 75W with no external power needed.
Hummm that's an interesting sounding gpu
Great video as always DSP! Really informative and to the point. Some interesting points to take away, as always. I have a question though. Is it possible to plot using AMD 8GB GPUs, like the RX 580 and 570 8GB? I can't find anything on this online. Best I found was a Github repo saying that there was a fix for the RX 5500 8GB. Is there any chance of doing a video using an old Polaris GPU for plotting?
I don't have one myself to test, but if you do no harm in testing. I thought I read 580 worked? Test with a much older driver I might suggest if you do test it. What repo is that? Be on alert, the scammers are onto chia now so mindful of anything you download.
These libraries he's demonstrating are using the CUDA framework developed by NVidia to use the "CUDA Cores" on NVidia GPUs, there may be other builds using AMD's GPU compute stack and as DSP said you're welcome to try but I don't think it will. CUDA was one of the big reasons lots of pro and semi pro users always wanted NVidia cards because many companies worked with NVidia to implement CUDA acceleration in their program.
@@KrumpetKruncher I know this. Most of my mining rigs are Nvidia. I'm curious as I saw that the Gigahorse repo mentioned AMD a few times in their README file, namely the RX 5500 XT 8GB. Genuinely curious about this.
@@avikarsewnath8514 oh ok, you know more than me then. I hope you're right, I don't like it when one company has a market cornered (even a relatively small one like this)
I have toshiba mg07 series sas. Hdd how to connect it ?
SAS likely does not connect directly and work. You need to get an HBA, LSI 9207-8i or similar, flashed to IT mode and a FORWARD breakout 8087 to SAS cable.
DO NOT GET A REVERSE BREAKOUT CABLE, it will not work.
Glorious. Two questions, if I may. 1) The interwebs seem to list z420 max RAM at 64gb. Is there a particular sub-model that I'd need to consider to get to 256? 2) If I installed a 1070 and a P4 concurrently, is Gigahorse smart enough to use both of them for plotting and farming at the same time? (Windows)
So part 1) it's the CPU that gets you to 256GB. The E5-26xx V2 is a must. 2) You can specify which card does which function. I had exactly the same thought, there is a 75W 16x second slot, would be pretty perfect.
@@DigitalSpaceport Hi, yesterday I posted here that as well a V2 Motherboard is required but I don't know why my message was deleted (it happened as well with other post I wrote here) What happened?
@@DigitalSpaceport windows 11 pro seems to require an 8th generation chipset or newer... how do you get it to install with the E5-26xx ?

Assuming it's best to have 1 PC for plotting, and another to run the actual chia farming software. What do you recommend for getting the plotting PC over to the farming PC w/the SAS JBOD (Using DS4246s)?
40Gbit direct connect mellanox connect x-3 to create a mini storage network between the 2
@@DigitalSpaceport thanks man - any idea as an alternative, can I attach 2 servers w/HBA cards to the same DS4246 stack as long as there's an open IOM6 slot?
@@sanchezmarketing no that won't work. It can but that's a very difficult and specialized setup that I can't help you with.
Thank you very much for these guides, I was used to regular mining and these are helping a lot with the different terminology Chia uses. Also I was wondering, I know when Chia first started a couple years ago guys were burning through consumer SSDs like crazy using them as temp drives and started using SAS HDD arrays and enterprise SSDs that could handle the thrashing, do these new plotting methods still thrash your temp drive or are they able to handle that in RAM and spare the SSD some?
Thanks!
If you are using 256GB RAM, then all the work is done in that to prepare the plot file and you have no wear on the hard drive other then a 71GiB write to it for a C8 level compressed plot. If you have a lower amount like 128 and use a partial RAM/SSD split, then it is like 75/25 RAM/DISK workload. I have been using the same SSDs since 2 years ago and have not had a single one die yet. Most of the stories in the media were sourced from a very random Facebook page in Vietnam, but it was good clickbait. MadMax (same guy that has written the Gigahorse Plotter) wrote a plotter right after mainnet launch that drastically reduced the wear on drive for CPU plotting and everyone started using that pretty fast.
@Digital Spaceport Awesome and thank you! I'm trying to do it in a proxmox vm, the host has 256GB and I'm passing about 220GB along with a gpu to my plotting VM and then passing my plots to a big shared drive on my NAS computer that has a DS4486 attached (and like you said, it already had my "spare 1070" lol so compression/decompression should be good). My only problem left is I can't figure out why the plotting VM keeps randomly crashing, Linux based VMs seem to stay up no problem but Windows based VMs randomly crash every couple hours just on that host.
Ugh Windows VMs! I have had nothing but issues running my W11 desktop as a VM. I can't help ya on that one.
@Digital Spaceport lol no worries, I did IT work in the Army and we used Windows almost exclusively so it's just what I know, im slowly forcing myself into Ubuntu. Weird part is it is my Win Server 2019 vm and my Win 10 Pro VM, both crash the exact same way but only on this one host (it's a Threadripper), my Ryzen host and my Intel x299 host both run rock steady.
@@KrumpetKruncher you will plot faster in Linux if that helps 😁
thanks
something like this machine, the plan is to use it to plot then keep the drives in it to...is it called farm? If so, have you thought about building or using one to mine monero on the cpu and also maybe use the gpu for some mining as well?
Yeah it's called farming vs. mining and since GPU does the workload farming for me, I could dual mine and farm your right. Good call.
Thanks for the nice video! Looking for RAM modules and find one good deal. Please tell me is this ram modules compatible with z420 v2 motherboard? (M386B4G70DM0-CMA4Q - Samsung 32GB DDR3-1866 LRDIMM PC3-14900L Quad Rank x4 Module). CPU will be E5 2690 v2.
You dont need 1866. The system when maxed out will downclock it to 1333 most likely. I cant say that 100% as I cannot test 100% of combinations, but it has in every system I have with 1600 speed ram when fully populated in dell systems.
I have the same Setup here 1 to 1 why cant i install win11 pro ?
You have to take the steps to allow for older hardware install. ruclips.net/video/auUb_l8xjzM/видео.html
Ty @@DigitalSpaceport
You need a v2 Xeon and a version 2 motherboard to hit 256GB of RAM. If your boot block date in the bios is 3/6/13 then you have a v2 motherboard.
I'm curious to know why you need a v2 xeon, when Intel states max memory size for E5-1620 v1 is 375GB? I ask as I can't find any v2 for sale.
ok now I got a another ? the link you have for the z420 goes to pc server & parts, the ones i'm looking at are from the same place but i'm looking on newegg
So how can i buy though your link if I want one of these??
Oh by the way I can be a pain in the azz sometimes lol
Thanks for thinking of us! We are not however an affiliate of Newegg😉 but maybe I should apply again. Anyrate make sure you get the V2 motherboard from them. Cheers.

when looking to purchase a z420 pc parts and server says the z420 cant take 256gb ram or windows pro. Is he just mistaken?
It can as I show here. You need a E5 26XX V2 processor however.
@@DigitalSpaceport I kept digging and found you need the second gen of these boards with the later boot bios date and you’ll get the full ram gen 1 are not able
It's been a while since Ive built out a Workstation or PC. Need to build one for Plotting.
I think your Threadripper is in the "Monster" class. What kind of times you will get off that 🔥
Something hot I'm sure. Just finished plotting the last drive you sent me.
The ram you used to ECC registered. Can you please confirm thatnis correct?
I have a z420 with e5-1650. And I bought pc3 14900l ecc registered.

How i can farm with my 4 gb Rx570? in windows?
Unsure if you can with AMD. You can install it and do let me know if it works. There is OpenCL for some variants with some level of support but I dont have any AMD cards to test with.

To use LR-Dimms, you need to run a V2 processor
I am copying your build but think I may have come across a good deal. What I was wondering if an IBM 640GB High IOPS MLC Duo Adapter for IBM System SSD work with that workstation?
Yes most likely. The adapters are usually "dumb" without active components

The HP z420 v2 can take 256gb ram, the v1 version is 128gb max.
Yeah I lucked out in the video getting a V2 and didnt know the V1 had these limits until someone ran into it after I launched it. Wish I could edit a part of a video but YT just doesnt allow you to add in after its live.
@@DigitalSpaceport Great video though and wanted to let people know about the v1 128gb limit as its the one I have. HP z420's are great value though, can even be games machines!
Tuyệt vời.
I was GPU mining since Aug 2020. but now I have just finished plotting 4949 Chia plots. So, for the next 30 drives I may try plotting with Gigahorse C8. But I still like "self pooling" to my own pool. So that means using Chia Bladebit C7. I think I will need to do some testing on my own before plotting and or replotting all my drives. One advantage of going with Chia Bladebit C7 is that I can just continue "self pooling" and just use a new plot NTF to keep them separate. I think I'm doing fairly well, 6 XCH in 24 days, and I started farming only after 2,600 or so plots. But the law of averages means that I may have a dry spell now and then. Praying for rain
You can do self on gigahorse as well.
@@JeffFlowersgoogle You're right, the percentage for Gigahorse is taking out Block Rewards.
@@user-eb7mj6yn2i I'm not sure that I'm following? I'm personally bias'ed wrt to this tool; however, ( and please run the numbers yourself please)... this tool, can increase your earnings substantially - even with the dev fee ( which is clearly stated. ) With that being said, I (personally) highly recommend CPU farming at the lower compression factor, due to the ease in setup. I.e.: I actually don't recommend GPU farming ( at the much higher compression ) as it requires greater tech efforts upfront for folks. And the fee for CPU farming is a fraction of the GPU fees. Please do you're own calc's/ due diligence and know that I'm personally invested - still, we really want the best for the community.
