    Wow Desmond's energy was so bright at first I was a bit taken aback and was putting up resistence, but his persepctive especially on responsibility was so subtle and instructive. Wai-Yii's comments on science were deeply insightful. Their words toward the end on relationships were beautiful. Glad I softened and humbled myself and listened in the end.

    nice to see Desmond again and it reminds me on our training days with our master Chee Soo in Coventry. I can hear our master laughing about the idea of having a temple with priest and rituals and so on. But we all have to follow what is in our self.

    My definition of Tao is calm. I think calm is what we are looking for but love has that connotation. What they call "Nature" is what I refer to as Zen. My body and mind are a Temple that I carry with me. Peace and harmony.

    Most of my reading has been on Vedanta (Hindu metaphysics), but it’s amazing how similar it is to Taoism. René Guénon wrote that Taoism and Vedanta were the closest living traditions to the religion of Adam.

    In this day and time, people don’t want to accept Responsibility for their ways and actions andin a way, becoming lazy and dependent. With Taoism.. you become “Responsible” for your actions and self being… become a “Strong” person.

    To get full understanding you have to master both your field and its opposite one. On your journey you have to master a series of opposites: inside - outside, theory - practice

    With the statements towards the end about how we have to completely submit to nature, which is completely ‘objective’ and acts upon us with absolute equanimity regardless of what we think about it, I have to wonder how this can be reconciled with the many accounts of miracles in the Abrahamic traditions and elsewhere. There is something to be said for Christ’s statement that with just a mustard seed of faith we can order a mountain into the sea and it will obey. Objectivity is obviously real but the power of subjectivity shouldn’t be underestimated either. They are analogous to yang and yin.

    Hi, I'd be interested in any comments about what I am going to say. I have regarded myself as a daoist for many years and I have practised qigong for many years. I entirely agree with Desmond and Wai-Yi say about the need for balance in daily life and how we should seek to cultivate this. For several years I felt I had achieved this until I became ill. Now my life is full of pain and there is no balance in my life. Balance, it seems to me, needs you to be heathy and that becomes impossible when you become so unbalanced with illness and pain and the depression caused by these. So I am at the stage of giving up on daoism and any other kind of 'ism because they are of no use when you lose your health. Sorry to be so pessimistic but I feel people are being misled when they are told that a path will lead to happiness and fulfilment throughout their lives. At some point we will all become ill and then what do we do?

    • @kfirlevy8800
      @kfirlevy8800 Год назад +1

      Well, I don't see myself as a Daoist, I have just started practicing Tai Chi, but I have been curious about Daoism for several years and feel like I have some understanding about it, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.
      I think that you can never truly "reach" balance". Even when you're very advanced, there is always more balance to gain. Also naturally, there are days when you are more balanced and less so, so what exactly does to mean to "achieve balance"?
      You might not be able to reach the same kind of balance you had when you were well, but I tend to believe that these practices will help you, you might still be sick, but you probably will feel more energized and in control how you would if you haven't practiced.
      And all this said, I believe that eventually we're all humans, and Daoism, just as all other traditions and philosophies, is a human made idea which doesn't grasp entirely the ultimate truth of the world, or the prefect way to live (if there is any). And so It is defiantly possible that there might be some other practice that can help you better. Somewhat paradocsically, I even think that a real Daoist Master might say that going with the Dao is letting go of the practice that doesn't help you, and try out new things. I'm not saying that you should or shouldn't, but I think that it's right to keep an open mind.
      One last thing, about the conflict of finding balance while being ill, according to Daoism (as much as I know) there should be no conflict. Zhuongzi has a full chapter about cripples being great Daoists. So I think that according to Daoism, it should be possible to regain your balance, along with what ever limitations you might have. How exactly is above my understanding, but keep on looking!
      Anyways, I hope you found some valuable things among my words, even though they might appear to be a bit pessimistic too. I do wish you find the way in what ever condition you're in!

      @wilhelmwetterhoff8411 Год назад +3

      Hi Terry, I can only speak from my own experience and hope that it helps in some way - although your situation may be different from mine.
      When I started Dao practice, it was first and foremost about how to repair my body and regain my health. I had been chronically ill and very badly out of balance for several years when I first started learning Dao practice with Desmond and Way-Yii. Every time I would get ill, the only thing I could think of was how to regain my health and be able to function properly again. I can absolutely identify with your predicament - I know for myself how awful it is when you are so ill that you cannot even enjoy life.
      When I first got diagnosed, doctors prescribed drugs that I would have to take for the rest of my life, and gave me a bleak prognosis - they told me I would never be cured of this. But I kept trying every alternative treatment I could find. I discovered some that were quite effective at treating the symptoms, but then I still kept getting new flare-ups at unpredictable times, and I would constantly be worrying about getting ill again.
      At the same time, I was beginning to learn how to nourish myself through Dao practice. The most crucial thing I learned initially was how to rid myself of the fear, stress and anxiety that came from living with a chronic incurable disease, through the exercises I was learning in the classes. I found that if I practiced diligently and continuously, then the effects were both powerfully tangible in the immediate short term and gradually transformative in the long term. I could feel a sense of vibrant health starting to develop over time, and my energy levels were improving all the time, so I could do more things in a day without becoming tired. (Being ill had been depleting me for many years - I was close to falling into chronic fatigue before I started practicing)
      I was also becoming much calmer and more emotionally and mentally balanced. I could feel that the Dao practice was working on so many levels, and I kept going with it. My overall health kept improving until one day I realized that my ”incurable” chronic illness had disappeared for good without me even noticing how it happened.
      When I became ill, I really didn’t think I could regain my youth and good health ever again. It seemed like an impossible dream. But I was mistaken - because to this day I am healthier and more vital than I ever was even in the prime of my youth.
      All the alternative treatments I tried certainly helped, but what fundamentally transformed my constitution from constant ill health to constant good health was the practice. It has enabled me to return to a natural state of balance that I didn’t even know existed before I started learning about Dao.
      So in my experience, Daoism was never about adhering to any dogma or faith or rigid philosophy as implied by the “-ism”. The word “-ism” is a poor and unfortunate translation from Chinese. For me, it is always about real practice and direct experience of the theory and principles of Dao. The words are not Dao, you have to verify the reality of what they describe through your practice.
      For me ultimately Daoism is a way of life, and Dao practice is a science with theory and principles that can be demonstrated to work. So there is no need for blind faith in anything.
      Laozi says, “everyone knows of Dao, yet no one practices it” - this seems to me more true than ever in the modern world.
      Dao practice is the most difficult thing I have ever done, but it is also by far the most rewarding. It might not be for everyone, but in my case, it has completely transformed my life for the better in many ways that I could not even have conceived of before starting on this journey.
      That said, I am still merely a beginner at it. I only share my limited experience with Dao practice here in hopes that it might be of some use to people who want to learn about Dao and happen to read this.

    Is there somewhere a person could go to become refined? I did this alone and became so sensitive I nearly died. I became the crazy lady. But I knew. Water in water out. The most sensitive I became the more I pushed away from it and went back to the poison because love and energy as you say was leaking out all over the place. Now I’ve hardened again. Is there a way backwards to do this with order?

    I devote at least one hour daily to sitting/lying in various yin yoga positions. I just let my mind run its own course, im hoping that could be part of a daoist practice, i definitely go about my day with a calmer attitude.
    Daoist teachings seem to align with the "atheism" of spinoza, and the writings of ralp waldo emerson in his work on "nature".
