    I am a Quaker first. Silence and meditation are central to my spiritual life and have been for 50 years .(82 yo).
    I have enjoyed George's programs and luck at having discovered tai ji early in life. I practice various qigong daily Liu zi jue,
    ba duan jin and tai ji short and long forms. Movement is key to the successful practice of qigong. Tao te jin inspires.
    thanks for bringing Ken back into my awareness.

    32:30 I've only been doing Qigong for a few days now and it doesn't surprise me at all: it's a lot more involved than walking! 37:30-44:00 in these few days of practicing qigong from *youtube* videos (not even "real" training) and I have already felt an improvement in my thinking, suppleness of my mind, my focus, my reaction time, my coordination, my digestion, my emotional aliveness, my intention (I made a list today and actually stuck to it--unheard of for me).

      thank you so much for your comment! i used to belly dance and dance a lot and its a lot of work. i also took some Qi Gong in massage school when i studied Acupressure and it was great preparation for massage work. ive been working a lot but not exercising and getting into tai chi and qi gong again using RUclips videos. hey, no shame because they are FREE and easy to do ANYWHERE even in your business clothes. just started again this morning and my mood has skyrocketed! definitely need to move body and keep energy flowing because life is constantly in motion and being sedentary is actually against the laws of nature because nothing ever stays still. yes its more involved than walking. Its been 2 months since you posted this comment, how has your practice been going? Writing a journal of progressing or making a list like you did is inspiring to track progress and be grateful for the transformation. I am listening to subliminals and affirmations while doing my exercises. Also look into a rebounder as well as its great lymph and really good and to do chi gong while bouncing.
      God Bless in good health.

He went to China when they openend the country, spent decades to learn in China and now is an old gentleman, who can still outpunsh the youngsters & seems levitating and gliding over this planet, when he walks 😅

      You're so right. I have the opposite problem: I have difficulty getting enough exercise sometimes and my main focus are the arts and more calm ventures. I really liked this explanation. I liked how he spoke about not being snobbish or thinking you're better because you practice qi gong and not regular exercise.
      Some spiritual people also adapt that sense of thinking they're on a higher level because they're less focused on the physical. It is all about balance. A stable mind in a fit body.

    On attaining emptiness @45:00 ish...
    When someone talks let their words run through your mind, instead of your own thoughts. Sit by a stream or stand where you are and absorb your reality.
    If by a stream, let the sound of the stream run through your mind like the words of a lover, who pats your head as you rest it on their lap.
    Feel the density of the air, is it thick and about to rain?
    Feel the shade upon you, without thinking an internal monologue about the words you would use to describe it to someone else, simply feel.
    Observe how many sounds you can hear and where they are, what they are, without labelling what they are, simply experience the way the frequencies of its existence is detected by your sense organs.
    Feel the sensation of the colour red as it hits the cells at the back of your eyes.

      Personal opinion but I don’t think they’re the same. Kundalini is described literally as a serpent and chi is simply life energy. I would never follow yoga as a serious pursuit as well as mind meditation as I think they’re spiritually dangerous for most westerners. I go to yoga once a week and never say “namaste” at the end

    I’d like to tell you more about the story of the Taoist Wellness Online, Master Gu’s Online Academy. How the Academy started is quite a funny story 🙈.
    We could never have imagined that today we are now the biggest Tai Chi school IN THE WORLD!
    It all began when I was 3 years into my journey living with Master Gu in his mountainous Tai Chi School.
    Master Gu is fluent in English and has always seen it as his life mission to share the healing Taoist arts of Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Meditation with the world. He shared with me his vision to create not only online courses, but an online Academy.
    I was excited by this vision and shared how I could use my filmmaking and inter-web skillz to make it happen.
    We then had a cup of tea and Master Gu sang Chinese opera while playing the guitar… 🤠☯
    We are really proud of what we have built. We now are a 16-person team from 7 countries and we are on a mission to create films, communities and transformative education to help people and planet live in balance.
    The Online Academy is one of the best ways you can help us on our mission and you get so much learning!

    Hi George and thank you so much for bringing all this knowledge here on youtube! I've been following you for a while, came across your channel when I was also going through a lot of existential anxiety and I absolutely love it, it's such a gift to be able to be transported to Master Gu's presence but also to view everything from the lens of a very relatable and open person (you)! This is the first time I am commenting here, as I was particularly drawn to the concept of linking the ancient Eastern practises of Chi Gong to some of the slightly more open minded efforts of western science. I happen to have spend many years (in London) doing a PhD and researching in cell biology and genetics and I loved the parallel between the mitochondria and the Chi! I've been thinking about such parallels for a while now, more I guess for personal reasons of wanting to reconcile my training with all these incredible new things that I've been scratching the surface of on eastern practices. I think you would love a podcast series by Andrew Huberman, if you don't follow him already, he has several episodes and has done some research with his group in Stanford on characterising in a cell and molecular level the impact of certain breathing practices. Thanks again for your channel! Eleni

    • @elenikouki2352
      @elenikouki2352 Год назад

      * I should clarify, by more open minded efforts I mean that historically western science and medicine have been dismissive of eastern practices, for many reasons, some of which include western science being build on a capitalist framework that centres pharmaceutical interventions, but that is a whole other conversation :) Recently, there have been some slightly more progressive efforts in eg understanding how the "placebo" effect works and trying to address the idea of mind over matter. In this context, the impact of Eastern practices has been studied with a slightly more open mindset

      I studied integrative medicine with a naturopath and acupuncturist, and some of his life's work was in making these correspondences as precise as possible. In the more modernized "traditional Chinese medicine" (Actually an amalgamation of traditions in that came together in communist China as an attempt to fit the conventional western mode) there are different kinds of vital substances, and chi is just one of them. Qi is often equated to the nervous system and the functions of an organ(What innervates the organ); and yang with metabolic function and warmth (in this case of organs it is the arterial blood flow; and it is also mitochondrial activity; which plays into the breakdown of fuel of which a byproduct is warmth).
      You might like the channel I started with him; where we go into some of these correspondences. . . .
      This is one of the biomedical and anthroposophical correspondences to the vital substances in Chinese Medicine
      ruclips.net/video/oD5RPY0bWIM/видео.html
      e.g. Liver Chi (how is it's ability to circulate water and nutrition, and to detoxify);
      vs. Liver Yang (how is blood circulation to that particular organ, and mitochondrial activity within it)
      Of course in Chinese medicine we measure the quantity and quality of these substances through the pulses tongue, channel diagnosis and the assessment of signs and symptoms; but there are maybe functional medicine tests (and certainly liver enzyme tests in this example) that might measure the biomedical factors; certainly we can scan for thermal activity in an organ (and given a norm to base our work on) ad have some understanding about it's yang activity; or the mitochondrial function. Cheers,

    I read one of Ken's books many years ago. Well written and interesting. Was struck by his comments during this podcast about Alan Watts. Perhaps I misheard, but I thought that he said that he was a collaborator, having met Alan in 1973? Since Watts sadly passed in November of the same year, it seems improbable that Ken would have become so close to one of the great Zen/Taoist scholars in his early 20s? Perhaps I've missed something... or perhaps this was recorded many years ago?

I first met Alan Watts in 1968, attended various workshops and lectures, was accepted as one of five scholarship students to study Taoism with him at his home library in the summer of 1973. At that time I already had working knowledge of classical Chinese. Alan passed in November of that year. I wrote about this in my article "You can tell a yogi by his laugh: reminiscences of Alan Watts' last summer" published in Self & Society: An International Journal for Humanistic Psychology.

    Talking about sending energy to your hands... dunno if it helps.. but I found that simply putting my attention to my hands when moving them somehow relaxes and in some way "changes" them.. like they become more smooth and flexible.. sometimes even warmer.

    A new respect for Ken Cohan is kind words for my mentor Alan Watts, since 1980, my only regret in life is to never met Alan Watts although I did receive a certificate of enlightenment from Alan’s son Mark Watts. May you all be safe from tigers.

    Our lives need more balance now because of what has been going on lately Being sometimes seems contradictory to the things that happen in life especially if extreme However being born of non-being also means not being afraid completely What I find difficult is to believe I am a functional part of life when life doesn't seem to be listening? You know? We are not connected to life we are unplugged as you have told us to life itself Knowing is the culprit Yet again for me how can I be functional at all this way? Can you help? I think too I need to be there and again where in this dizzying presentence where do I start sometimes?

    @Apologies for the confusion.
    The observation of motion and change in the world around us is like watching a river flowing. Just as the river constantly moves and changes, so does our existence. From the gentle ripples to the powerful currents, the river reminds us of the ever-changing nature of life. By observing and understanding the river's flow, we can learn to adapt and navigate through its twists and turns with grace and resilience. Similarly, art acts as a window through which we can witness and appreciate the beauty of motion and change. Just as we stand by the riverbank and marvel at its dance, let us open our eyes to the perpetual dance of life and embrace the wisdom it offers.
    Now, we can start from here. 😮😊🤐🫡

    I have to make a correction to Ken’s book. Zhuang Zi was not Lao Zi’s disciple.
    Other than that it is a very good book.

    • @kennethcohen9859
      @kennethcohen9859 Год назад +5

      Perhaps you misunderstood. Zhuang Zi was Lao Zi's disciple only in the way we might say that Saint Francis was a student of Christ. There is no evidence that Zhuang Zi met Lao Zi . Rather Zhuang Zi clearly expands on ideas that are found earlier in the Dao De Jing.
