Bad string of luck for this mom. First her mate goes missing last year, and as a result one chick was lost after the other forced it out. Then this year an egg fell into a crevice, and mom accidentally punctured it trying to get it out. And now this. The nest was positioned such that one side was supported by a dead limb, which finally broke in about 30 mph winds.
That is so sad. I've been watching a pair of eagles in Big Bear Valley, CA for about 2 years now so I can imagine how devastating this would be for those who have been watching these eagles. The BBV nest is 145 ft up and it can get very windy so I'm often concerned about limbs breaking, especially when it is full of snow, or the nest getting blown out of the tree. Nature can be very unkind at times.
I watch Big Bear eagle cam too, and it was hard watching them through the blizzards this year. The tree they are in is alive and strong though, so I am sure the nest will be fine. I hope they lay eggs soon. :)
It seems to be an unlucky year for our eagle families. First Samson disappeared from the NCFL nest, then Harriet in SWFL, Jackie and Shadow's eggs failed to hatch, and now this tragedy.
@@wildflower1397 It just can be scary watching the tree sway in those Santa Ana winds. I am watching a video right now of them in the nest, doing their nestorations. We are hopeful of another clutch this month.
@@jaknap1 No, not the case. The camera has been in place for a decade, and was clearly not mounted on or all that near to the branch that died. The only thing that could have possibly prevented this would have been a major alteration to reinforce/replace the structural dead branch underneath the nest. Not only would such a thing have been both very costly and risky, but highly unlikely to be an approved operation, even if the hazard branch was noticed prior to the start of nesting season - there are extremely strict federal laws in place when it comes to disturbing bald eagle nests.
@@BasedRanger thanks for the background. Good to know that humans did not contribute to this tragedy. I’ve seen full grown man weighing 200+ pounds sitting in some ness when tagging eaglets.
Heart breaking!!! This is too much. We are heartbroken! In Florida BUILDERS are KILLING the forests and hundreds of nests, also burying alive thousands of gopher turtles. Desperate eagles had their nests destroyed by building communities over communities. It is a total nature genocide .
So heartbreaking, such a tough season for the bald eagles, 2 adults leaving their nests, Jackie & Shadow losing both eggs, Harriet & M15 having to rebuild after Hurricane Ian.
I'm pretty sure mom and dad will begin rebuilding right away and have another clutch of eggs real soon. Just as M15 and Harriet at Southwest Eagle Cam down in Florida was destroyed by a hurricane they rebuilt that very week and it did take them a whole week to rebuild but they did it and their 2 eaglets just fledged this week! They wasted no time.
The weather is very different in MN. The nesting season is much shorter. Nest building takes a lot of time and energy. The commentators say that the eagles Beau and Nancy probably will not have a second clutch this year. Not enough time, and eagles tend to stay loyal to their territory. In FL, Harriet and M15 had a lot of debris on hand, warmer weather, and just about enough time - several months - to build a nest, lay eggs, and raise eaglets. The fledglings stay around for at least a month to learn how to hunt and fly.
Oh no… so tragic. So so sad. Poor eaglet poor sweet DNR couple. So so sad. 😢 poor eaglet. They questioned the branch. They could have tried to fix the branch when eagles go on vacation. stay strong. 😒💔🙏🐦🌷
I'm in Australia, and we dont get snow where I live, but we had a similar situation. We had a Little Eagle nest in a tree covered with mistletoe. One of the mistletoes died, and the nest fell down on that side. The adults abandoned the nest after that.
We are expecting our Two Harbors Catalina egg to pip by the 4th of April. While you can't bring back the Eaglet that was lost, the children are invited to join with us and celebrate new life once again.
I have a falcons nest in my woods behind the house. My back deck is very high off the ground and the falcons return to this nest every year. I watch the young baby falcons in the nest, when mama is away they play! They get right on the edge and walk around it like it's nothing. Scares me everytime they do it. I am just hoping one never falls out. Last year there were 3 babies in it.
I have been watching the Cams of Bald Eagles Jackie & Shadow for the last 3 months. I have fallen In Love with them. I Just came across this video a few mins ago and My Heart is Broken. I can Only Imagine what It was like for people watching when This happened.
They send people up these huge trees to band these babies so we can keep track of who’s who so why can’t we send people up to inspect these trees and Nests so these things don’t happen again🤷🏼♀️
Show this kind of somber spirit for the children who are killed in abortions as well. You care about a damn bird egg more than a baby in the womb. It’s a wild world out there.
I was watching when it happened I was in shock just couldn't believe it and then finding out the eaglet did not survive was so sad but on a lighter note we have spring to look forward to and a new nest to be built Nancy and Beau are good parents
I have heard that they only raise one chick. That on the strongest forces the other out. And if they fail to raise in a nest they abandon that nest. At least that is what I was told!
Shame on them for knowing the nest was heavy and did nothing about it. I am angry. The baby did not have to die. They could have made repairs or built a new nest before the season began.
