One big drawback of iPhone no one mentions is the front facing camera of iphone is not capable of blur effect aka bokeh for vlogging whereas the aperture of zv1 easily can do it.
@@archie7288 Outdated and dull? are you ever use DSLR or professional equipment camera? The Sony RX100 will give you similarities on the contrast, colour and sharpness with DSLR compared to the iPhone artificial software enhancement.
Probably not an ideal comparison because of automatic color, contrast, sharpness adjustments within the phone software. The ZV-1 is better (as with all digital p&s, dslr, and mirrorless cameras) shot in raw and edited to taste. Phones mostly make those decisions on the user's behalf when in automatic modes.
The sound of the Sony is miles ahead! More accurate leaving scope for a Producer) does the Sony have an option to add even a higher end plug-in or wireless Mic ? Apogee MiC would be a lovely fit - for live music it’s serious too. iPhone Cam looks great but over cooked / fake at times. Probably the Sony would have more scope for colour grading later in FCPX etc ?
(I just tried in proper studio monitors) iPhone mic is so brittle sounding - they cranked top end ! Bose hi-fi do this too (they do it a little better tho) there’s a good place for all of these products imho!

Well, I expected to see more difference between a dedicated camera and smartphone camera. For my eye there is no clear winner. Surprisingly, in some situations iPhone gives better video and photo quality. IPhone has obviously better stab and battery life, larger screen. Forgetting about the price, I don't see clear reason to prefer Sony.
the sony has a bigger sensor, therefore it would do better in low light if you're willing to learn alittle and adjust in camera. the iphone would be better on auto settings no changing done, the sony would be better if you change settings depending on use case. but i agree the phone would be better in battery and stabilization, but with sony you can buy extra batteries and change them quickly. in summary if you dont have a phone buy the iphone, if you already have a phone theres no need to buy another phone, get a camera where you can get better image quality.

It looks like that ZV1 has a Flopy video, just like iphone. Is that correct? I have A6300 but is boring to carry a lot of lenses, gimbal, etc. I am thinking to change for a ZV1.... what do you think about it?
If you are not a "FilmMaker" the iPhone is no brainer. its more camera then those we had 10-20 years back for TV use. :) Great video, loved it! The shot with the lady and Clown were amazing in slowmotion.

Compared to iphone the zv1's video is bit zoomed in, is there any lenses we can add to make a wide angle video on the zv -1 ? And even the colours are more saturated on the iPhone wdy say ?
Hey) the colours out of the iPhone are always more saturated, but you can play a lot with it in both cameras afterward in post. In terms of wide-angle lens, I heard of one - if I’m not mistaken Ulanzi company makes a wide-angle magnetic adopter that makes your lens around 15-17mm wide in full frame equivalent

Im really hesitant on what to do, i do gaming RUclips videos and some random vlogs on my other channel and i need a good camera to film with, but i also need a new phone because i own an old iPhone 6s that’s starting to crash alot and the storage is full, i dont know what to do, should i go for the camera or should i go for the phone?

I hate to say it cause I really wanted to buy the ZV1 but the difference in quality from my iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t justify spending $700. Apple has really done a good job at making arguably the best non-standalone point and shoot camera on the market. The ZV1 portrays colors more accurate to real life but the sharpened look of the iPhone camera is so good you almost can’t go back to real life.
It’s a matter of preference for many of us)) the video quality is totally on the ZV-1 side and to me it is much better choice as a b-cam for my main Sony a7s 3
@@NOlimitsON That's dope! I'm sure the other camera is geared for videography/cinematics. The quality is amazing and it depends on usage. For a user like me who is on the go and streams on Twitch off his phone, cause I don't want to carry around all that equipment, it's just more convenient for me to stick with the iPhone due to its comparable performance and convenience. Even if it's just mounting it on a tripod and going live. I don't mind saving the $700 and waiting for the new model with more specs. The ZV1 is a great point and shoot camera. If anything, I'm shocked at how good the iPhone 12 Max Pro camera is for something that I've only used on auto and never had to adjust. I've streamed from both my iPhone and a friend's G7X and the video quality is virtually identical. But I'm still new to cameras and content creation so any help is appreciated!
@@isittechno5116 the thing is that there are so many different scenarios and cases, that there is no perfect camera overall, there are deferent good enough cameras for certain situations)) and there never will be an absolutely perfect camera) that is why - the formula is simple - use what you like and what you have money for 😅
So agree Joseph. I have been thinking about buying Zv-1 for a while, but after seeing this video I believe saving up for a newer iPhone (have the 11) is the way to go for me.
@@tinaavantis6900 That's great! I ended up purchasing (2) Sony a5100s for $350 each instead of using the $700 on (1) ZV1. Now I have my iPhone for Cam A and the two Sonys for Cam B and Cam C. The iPhone 11 is still pretty good! Maybe this alternative can be an option for you.

Hey, thank you) I think there are pretty different cameras, 70D is pretty old already, and it really depends what kind of lens you use with it. It’s really bulky and heavy compared to ZV-1, so it depends on your needs, if you need a camera to be compact - go for ZV-1 ☺️

As great of pictures new phones can take they will always take a back seat to a camera. The bigger sensor just gives you more to play with. Don’t get me wrong you can take some real bangers with a phone, sometimes quality over convenience is just better

Amazing video! I am still undecided. Can you please tell me what exactly you were shooting this video with? I currently film my overhead desk timelapses with an old iPhone 7 but it just looks so horrible how it changes exposure constantly, it’s very evident in timelapses, and there is no way to disable auto-exposure anywhere in the settings. Would iPhone 12 Pro Max do the same? I have a Sony A6400 as my main btw, but I need more than one angle for my drawing videos.
Hey, you can remove the auto exposure in the iPhone camera app, but you have to do it every time you start filming. So you just have to tab to focus and then hold your finger on the screen until it says 'AE/AF lock' (auto exposure and auto focus lock). I hope this helps!
I may one day upgrade to the Panasonic GH6 that isn't out yet. 10bit 4k 60fps 5.7K down scaled to 4K. Only M43 sensor but looks promising. I use to have a G85 and the Olympus M1 MKII when I started RUclips both M43
@@NOlimitsON What is your type of work? Sony works great the A7C was sooo tempting but boy does the cost add up if you want the good lenses and accessories... And so does the weight witch means so do the gimble cost to support it and so forth ;)
@@sparketech I shoot a lot of stuff for RUclips, for bloggers, promo videos and commercials for companies and event reportage, so I use a7s3 a lot, and to me yeah, it does worth the cost) it all depends on your type of work, a7c is a good camera, but I’d wait for a new 10-bit camera from Sony (like a7 IV) to really get a boost in quality, because the difference between 8bit and 10bit is significant
I think ZV-1 is better value for money (it’s almost 2 times cheaper, has faster lens (even though it’s only 24-70 vs 24-200 in RX100 vii), zv1 doesn’t have a viewfinder, but would barely use it on rx100
we do a lot of outside video of construction, to me it looks like the iphone would be better, especially because i can go straight to social media from my phone on site at post vids or pics. I might get both, i phone for outside and sony for inside vlogging , thanks for the review
One day phones will start having a 1" sensor but even it has that, I don't think it can beat the bigger lens on a real camera. Sure, the 12 did a good job but my heart goes for the ZV1. You made me want to get it haha. Time to save money! :) I used to have a Nex-6 and photos taken from it still look much better than any phone. Too bad it's broken and I haven't used it. I've used phones to take photos so much that I think their qualities are good. It's time to upgrade. ZV-1 may have a smaller sensor than APS-C on Nex-6 but from my experience, I didn't even buy new lenses lol, so I'll stick with non-interchangeable cameras. Also, if you go on a trip and use iPhones to take photos, then a couple of days later, the photo app will make a slide show for you with a mix of photos and videos. It's very convenient! That's the best feature I love about iPhones. I guess I'll have to watch your review on the 13. See you there!
Also there was many time he shot in night mode when he didn’t have to and also shooting in pro raw and then modifying the picture he could have gotten pictures to alike quality and vibrance but it’s people who don’t use the phone properly who don’t know what this phone can do, bet he can’t do time laps videos at night or extended exposure picture for astrology but ok lol
This was a great review! I'm toying around with getting the ZV-1 as a supplement for when I don't feel like carting around my larger setup to vlog. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, and nerdy me is usually disappointed with the footage afterward. I loved the side by side comparison. Great work!

I saw the video, it was good. So basically I was waiting for this review for a long time. Actually, there are 2 types of creators yeah like 1 who will record videos outdoors and the one like u and me who will record videos inside. All the videos of iPhone comparison with DSLRs are basically based on outdoor shooting, so I request u please can u make a video like even a small video will be fine explaining and comparing iPhone 12 pro max and any DSLR or even ZV-1 will be fine but for indoor shooting like for RUclips creators like me and u. Computational photography vs raw image capture... What exactly is there to compare? Good video man but I could have saved you some time by letting you know that a smartphone that uses software to create an image will never be close to being on par with a camera that shoots raw.
Of course it will not, but people are interested in comparable picture quality of iPhone vs point and shoot cameras in jpeg, because most of them won’t mess with raw
Sinply turn turn on pro raw to get the natural image and adjust using Lightroom to suit your needs a lot of the pictures that were take could have looked so much better
i somewhat regretted buying zv 1 as it is not cheap and I felt like my iphone 12 pro does most jobs that zv 1 can do. However, I do recognize some difference when I film in 24fps. zv 1 produces much more cinematic quality than iphone 12 pro (I'm not sure why) and I can see myself when I film by flipping the screen, where as I phone front camera is horrible that the footage is unusable. If iphone's front camera was as nice as their rear, it would save me energy in carrying a zv 1 with its wide angle lens..
There is no way i can afford this camera 😭ima stick with my iphone 12 on this one. The only issue seems to be the price. And ik iphones are expensive but they arent just made for pictures and recordings so thats a major plus. If i had the money to buy this the ZV-1 would be the winner hands down. I love the zoom feature on it. If only my iphone would zoom as clearly.
Nice video! Amazing how pleasing iPhone is on the image front and how far they got maximizing the small sensor performance. In comparison Sony seems to do less with a larger sensor. On the video front I preferred Sony in several occasions. I noticed a lot of compression in video on iPhone. What video rate did you use for iPhone? If you use MoviePro or Filmic Pro, you can access higher data rates, and it would be good to see the actual device capabilities versus software limitations of Apple’s own recording tool.
The iphone pics look artificial, as if heavy-handed HDR and vivid colors are applied. There are more details in the Sony, looking at the lady's face (2.07). Her hair is also more natural on the Sony, one can see the background blur artifacts of the Iphone portrait even without magnification. That said, for most people the IQ of the Iphone is good enough, and it is far more convenient to post it on social media than the Sony. A good reason to buy the Sony is that when you travel, it is a good idea to conserve your phone battery. Sometimes a call is more important than a pic.
2:05 its insane how bad the skin looks on the iPhone, by far the worst aspect of this camera IMO. Thankfully there are plenty of good manual camera apps such as Moment or Halide.

I hate to say it cause I really wanted to buy the ZV1 but the difference in quality from my iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t justify spending $700. Apple has really done a good job at making arguably the best non-standalone point and shoot camera on the market. The ZV1 portrays colors more accurate to real life but the sharpened
look of the iPhone camera is so good you almost can’t go back to real life.
It’s a matter of preference for many of us)) the video quality is totally on the ZV-1 side and to me it is much better choice as a b-cam for my main Sony a7s 3
@@NOlimitsON That's dope! I'm sure the other camera is geared for videography/cinematics. The quality is amazing and it depends on usage. For a user like me who is on the go and streams on Twitch off his phone, cause I don't want to carry around all that equipment, it's just more convenient for me to stick with the iPhone due to its comparable performance and convenience. Even if it's just mounting it on a tripod and going live. I don't mind saving the $700 and waiting for the new model with more specs. The ZV1 is a great point and shoot camera. If anything, I'm shocked at how good the iPhone 12 Max Pro camera is for something that I've only used on auto and never had to adjust. I've streamed from both my iPhone and a friend's G7X and the video quality is virtually identical. But I'm still new to cameras and content creation so any help is appreciated!
@@isittechno5116 the thing is that there are so many different scenarios and cases, that there is no perfect camera overall, there are deferent good enough cameras for certain situations)) and there never will be an absolutely perfect camera) that is why - the formula is simple - use what you like and what you have money for 😅
So agree Joseph. I have been thinking about buying Zv-1 for a while, but after seeing this video I believe saving up for a newer iPhone (have the 11) is the way to go for me.
@@tinaavantis6900 That's great! I ended up purchasing (2) Sony a5100s for $350 each instead of using the $700 on (1) ZV1. Now I have my iPhone for Cam A and the two Sonys for Cam B and Cam C. The iPhone 11 is still pretty good! Maybe this alternative can be an option for you.
I hate my zv1 stabilisation I’m recording in hd 1080p 60f when I stable a a video in catylyst browse lose too much video quality like 3gp 🤯

Hey, thank you) I think there are pretty different cameras, 70D is pretty old already, and it really depends what kind of lens you use with it. It’s really bulky and heavy compared to ZV-1, so it depends on your needs, if you need a camera to be compact - go for ZV-1 ☺️

As great of pictures new phones can take they will always take a back seat to a camera. The bigger sensor just gives you more to play with.
Don’t get me wrong you can take some real bangers with a phone, sometimes quality over convenience is just better

Amazing video! I am still undecided. Can you please tell me what exactly you were shooting this video with? I currently film my overhead desk timelapses with an old iPhone 7 but it just looks so horrible how it changes exposure constantly, it’s very evident in timelapses, and there is no way to disable auto-exposure anywhere in the settings. Would iPhone 12 Pro Max do the same? I have a Sony A6400 as my main btw, but I need more than one angle for my drawing videos.

Hey, you can remove the auto exposure in the iPhone camera app, but you have to do it every time you start filming. So you just have to tab to focus and then hold your finger on the screen until it says 'AE/AF lock' (auto exposure and auto focus lock). I hope this helps!

I may one day upgrade to the Panasonic GH6 that isn't out yet. 10bit 4k 60fps 5.7K down scaled to 4K. Only M43 sensor but looks promising. I use to have a G85 and the Olympus M1 MKII when I started RUclips both M43

@@sparketech I shoot a lot of stuff for RUclips, for bloggers, promo videos and commercials for companies and event reportage, so I use a7s3 a lot, and to me yeah, it does worth the cost) it all depends on your type of work, a7c is a good camera, but I’d wait for a new 10-bit camera from Sony (like a7 IV) to really get a boost in quality, because the difference between 8bit and 10bit is significant

What about zv 1 vs rx100 vii?
I think ZV-1 is better value for money (it’s almost 2 times cheaper, has faster lens (even though it’s only 24-70 vs 24-200 in RX100 vii), zv1 doesn’t have a viewfinder, but would barely use it on rx100
we do a lot of outside video of construction, to me it looks like the iphone would be better, especially because i can go straight to social media from my phone on site at post vids or pics. I might get both, i phone for outside and sony for inside vlogging , thanks for the review

One day phones will start having a 1" sensor but even it has that, I don't think it can beat the bigger lens on a real camera. Sure, the 12 did a good job but my heart goes for the ZV1. You made me want to get it haha. Time to save money! :)
I used to have a Nex-6 and photos taken from it still look much better than any phone. Too bad it's broken and I haven't used it. I've used phones to take photos so much that I think their qualities are good. It's time to upgrade. ZV-1 may have a smaller sensor than APS-C on Nex-6 but from my experience, I didn't even buy new lenses lol, so I'll stick with non-interchangeable cameras.

Also, if you go on a trip and use iPhones to take photos, then a couple of days later, the photo app will make a slide show for you with a mix of photos and videos. It's very convenient! That's the best feature I love about iPhones.

The reason why iPhone is better, it's a phone. There is Apps, 10bit colors. At last resale value is very high.
Also there was many time he shot in night mode when he didn’t have to and also shooting in pro raw and then modifying the picture he could have gotten pictures to alike quality and vibrance but it’s people who don’t use the phone properly who don’t know what this phone can do, bet he can’t do time laps videos at night or extended exposure picture for astrology but ok lol
This was a great review! I'm toying around with getting the ZV-1 as a supplement for when I don't feel like carting around my larger setup to vlog. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max, and nerdy me is usually disappointed with the footage afterward. I loved the side by side comparison. Great work!

@@danishrizvi5886 actually ZV-1 is great and pretty different from ZV-E10, and I was really upset that ZV-E10 has the same old menu and horrible rolling shutter in 4K which makes it really useless for vlogging without a gimbal in my opinion… that’s sad… I’ll make a review on ZV-E10 and comparison with iPhone 12 Pro Max as soon as I get my hands on it

I saw the video, it was good. So basically I was waiting for this review for a long time. Actually, there are 2 types of creators yeah like 1 who will record videos outdoors and the one like u and me who will record videos inside. All the videos of iPhone comparison with DSLRs are basically based on outdoor shooting, so I request u please can u make a video like even a small video will be fine explaining and comparing iPhone 12 pro max and any DSLR or even ZV-1 will be fine but for indoor shooting like for RUclips creators like me and u. Actually, I am a student with limited budget, I have to buy a smartphone(for reels, TikTok, etc) and also a good camera, but if i buy both things my budget will go more than 2k USD. So that's why i was thinking to buy 13 pro max when it launches so that i can use it for my youtube content and also it will help in my reels and all. So just a comparison telling how better is iPhone 12 pro max for Tech content creators, and for the people doing indoor shooting. Thank You.

Computational photography vs raw image capture... What exactly is there to compare? Good video man but I could have saved you some time by letting you know that a smartphone that uses software to create an image will never be close to being on par with a camera that shoots raw.
Of course it will not, but people are interested in comparable picture quality of iPhone vs point and shoot cameras in jpeg, because most of them won’t mess with raw
I mean yes the Zv1 has way finer image quality, but the iPhone shoots Apple Pro RAW which is computational photography baked into the the RAW

Sinply turn turn on pro raw to get the natural image and adjust using Lightroom to suit your needs a lot of the pictures that were take could have looked so much better

i somewhat regretted buying zv 1 as it is not cheap and I felt like my iphone 12 pro does most jobs that zv 1 can do. However, I do recognize some difference when I film in 24fps. zv 1 produces much more cinematic quality than iphone 12 pro (I'm not sure why) and I can see myself when I film by flipping the screen, where as I phone front camera is horrible that the footage is unusable. If iphone's front camera was as nice as their rear, it would save me energy in carrying a zv 1 with its wide angle lens..

There is no way i can afford this camera 😭ima stick with my iphone 12 on this one. The only issue seems to be the price. And ik iphones are expensive but they arent just made for pictures and recordings so thats a major plus. If i had the money to buy this the ZV-1 would be the winner hands down. I love the zoom feature on it. If only my iphone would zoom as clearly.

Nice video! Amazing how pleasing iPhone is on the image front and how far they got maximizing the small sensor performance. In comparison Sony seems to do less with a larger sensor.
On the video front I preferred Sony in several occasions. I noticed a lot of compression in video on iPhone. What video rate did you use for iPhone? If you use MoviePro or Filmic Pro, you can access higher data rates, and it would be good to see the actual device capabilities versus software limitations of Apple’s own recording tool.

The iphone pics look artificial, as if heavy-handed HDR and vivid colors are applied. There are more details in the Sony, looking at the lady's face (2.07). Her hair is also more natural on the Sony, one can see the background blur artifacts of the Iphone portrait even without magnification. That said, for most people the IQ of the Iphone is good enough, and it is far more convenient to post it on social media than the Sony. A good reason to buy the Sony is that when you travel, it is a good idea to conserve your phone battery. Sometimes a call is more important than a pic.

2:05 its insane how bad the skin looks on the iPhone, by far the worst aspect of this camera IMO. Thankfully there are plenty of good manual camera apps such as Moment or Halide.
