I purchased a ZV-1 however i prefer using my iPhone 12 Pro Max with light chaser kit and moment lenses because its just less stuff to bring and there results are so close its just not worth it. Had i purchased a higher end cam or was focused on Bokeh shots i would prefer the ZV-1. However i just find the iPhone 12 Pro Max more compelling for a light weight mobile creator solution. Battery life is also far better than the ZV-1. Its all about the results you want during a shoot and what make sense for your goals. For Vlogging i just find the iPhone 12 with polar pro and moment lenses very very compelling. Good review .
Same here. Expect of zoom advantages recent smartphones are same or even better than premium compact cameras. Also you don't have to spend the money twice for two devices.
I'm really quite frustrated, my phone sorta destroys my TZ200 in almost every single way! Same pixel size, similar levels of maximum zoom, way better low light and video... Bah!
Hi i have the Nikon Z50 but i feel that my Oneplus with it computational photography power is better outdoor especially with it HDR capabilities at night all Nikon APSC Z has slow WIDE ANGLE ZOOM so less light comming. Now should i buy a Z6 with 24mm prime or the newest phone in the market. I travel in areas when dynamic range is critical. This is a big dillema or a combinaton of a phone and ZV-1
As I have explained, majority of full frame camera users want to avoid smartphone look, so buying full frame camera won't help you with that. Even if you decide to buy full frame camera, I don't recommend Nikon Z6.
I just ordered iPhone 13 Pro Max and looking forward testing camera my self personally, I’m strong believer that best camera is the one you have with you so cell phone camera is the way to go for me when my Sony mirrorless camera is left behind.
Here's my biggest issue with the ZV-1: It's not always in my pocket. On top of that, it costs about as much as my iPhone 12. If I had to choose between an iPhone with amazing cameras, or a camera which is ever so slightly better, then the decision is a no-brainer.
What’s amazing is that the iPhone 12 Pro can achieve more than 80% of the capability of a separate camera, while costing as low as 33% more (and still be a very capable smartphone). It is obvious to me that the Sony camera takes better pictures, but it’s tough for non-professionals to justify carrying a separate camera the size of 4 phones on a daily basis. It makes sense when you’re on a traveling vacation, but few people do that with Covid. Also, it’s kinda expensive to keep a $750 camera to be used 4 weeks a year.
What can I say, I like a phone that has interchangeable batteries. Well, I could live with some kind of pocket charged device as backup to plug the phone into...

Thank you for great video? Could u pls compare zv1 with smartphones which have nearly 1inch sensor such as iphone 12 promax, samsung s21 ultra, huawei p40 pro?
I got the Panasonic Lumix ZS200. It has a 24-360mm, 15X zoom lens with excellent stabilization. From 24 mm to 200mm the lens is fairly sharp. After 200mm, it is sharpest when set to f8. In my opinion, for everyday use, it beats both the iPhone and the ZV-1, especially in ergonomics and cost.
ZS200 doesn't even get close to ZV-1, especially not with 4K crop, lack of PDAF and average superzoom lens. Comparison of compact camera and smartphone is a more complicated topic addressed in this video.
It all depends on what display are you watching it on . If it's a tv or monitor it's always cameras if it's just a mobile or you tube on your phone then an iPhone is fine
Great video as always! The latest iPhones are incredible video cameras. I rarely use them for photos as I have my X-T30 with me most of the time. The joy is really with video. Simple and amazing quality from the 12
Try to run with ZV-1 and an iPhone and you will see that the video quality and overall impression drops on ZV-1. Every image and video I saw here on the screen are better on iPhone. If you guys want to have something better than iPhone 12, go for more expensive cameras. ZV-1 is not worth talking about, in my opinion. (Just my uneducated opinion)
@@TheHybridShooter Check out other camera reviews and comparisons, you can walk fast or run, this is how people show the stabiliztion of the camera. Walking with ZV-1 without a stabilizer looks much worse. Again, check out other reviews where they test stabilization.
I like the iPhone colors but can’t stand the digital sharpening. Does the zv-1 have the same color science as the a7siii or a7iii? Sony’s changed so many times that I get confused. (Glad they do it though)
12 pro is current top of the line mobile phone camera (well 2nd to the max) and costs a lot more than the zv1 but granted. what we really wish for is better optical technology so the sensors in phones can be bigger and the "glass" doesnt have to be so compromised. however, for most people who dont need telephoto or macro lenses, almost any current mid to top tear mobile phone will be just fine. Pixel, samsung and Iphone all have satisfying quality pictures to offer in 80% of your everyday situtations. If you need more than that, have fun entering the "what's the best camera for x dollars" vortex.
The advantages of iPhone over any 📷 is that it can do everything. Unless you are a professional photographer, maximum people don't need a Camera. iPhone is sufficient for photos, videos, web browsing, everything
...obviously, although there is significant amount of non-professional photographers who want better image quality or just a sperate device to shoot with.
The next step for iPhone is to incorporate AI-based sharpening (such as that done by Topaz software). That really is like voodoo what it does sometimes.
@@TheHybridShooter I mostly agree. In conventional sharpening you can't "create information (detail) out of nothing". It's more or less just edge enhancement. However, AI-based sharpening works differently and to my eye much more convinces that it is 'doing magic' and creating detail. Even so, that can only go so far and the real, physics solution is of course pixel density + lens.
@N D What you see is already smart sharpening. Some tools in Luminar AI that I use are actually better than Topaz, especially smart structure. It will always be just selective increase of contrast, it will never replace detail, so I don't see that as the next step. Pixel shift also has much more potential than any sharpening. That can replace detail.
@@TheHybridShooter Thanks for the info. I'd forgotten about Pixel Shift. That'd be interesting to see appear in smartphones as a real physical-based detail gatherer.
You may have missed one comparison: The time required to get the video into the computer. The Sony ZV-1 uses memory card, as long as you use fast memory card and fast USB3 card reader, you are likely to get around 100 MB/sec speed when downloading videos to the PC. On the iPhone side, so far all iPhone using the Lighting port are still in the USB2 speed, if you are recording video in Filmic Pro, getting the video out in the speed of around 30 MB/Sec is painful, especially on the road and not convivence if you don't have the computer with you to download the video when running out of capacity in the iPhone.
I didn't miss it, but it depends entirely on the workflow, so there is no conclusion to be made there. If you use Mac, iPhone is actually much superior in terms of the file transfers thanks to the AirDrop, which is faster than card reader and you don't even need to plug it in. Stills are also synced automatically which is a big advantage.
I'm always glad to see such comparisons. Compact cameras are very important to me from the privacy POV. I consider it important to be able to shoot with great quality offline without analysis by any online or connected AI. So, yeah, thumbs up from tinfoil hat heads. ;)
Sure, but I am not willing to use oversized smartphone just because of the larger sensor and I don’t like 70mm on telephoto camera, so I only have regular 12 Pro.
Would be neat to see other smartphones, my particular phone has the same pixel density as my 1 inch TZ200! There's another phone which just has a 1 inch sensor! I wish point and shoots did the on-the-fly stacking that some smartphones do!
Even a vintage *"Box Brownie Junior"* is better than any phone camera, for one simple reason.................... It will never ring and annoy you whilst you are taking a photo! Good vid mate.
@@TheHybridShooter What is really impressive, you actually still take the time to answer comments............. and that is one of the reasons you deserve that silver play button! Not long now. ;-)
Great video as usual! One note is the comparison for bokeh that is natural on the zv1 and artificial on the iPhone. Also it’s not possible to recreate (yet?) on iPhone video. So it’s a winner on the Zv-1. One of the reason I chose it :-) thanks for the video!
@@TheHybridShooter no I went for Zv-1 and I love the small amount of bokeh that to me gives that more natural and professional look to footage in video. iPhone can’t do that yet. I also have an iPhone 12 and yes it’s super practical and convenient for shooting video. Interchangeable lens is great but I’m too lazy :-) I love small cameras convenience. I was just making the point that to add to the comparison the natural bokeh in the Zv-1 is important because iPhone can’t produce that in video so it’s a big disadvantage at the moment (for users that like a bit of bokeh in their videos). Thanks !
I just don’t get blurry backgrounds, I was watching friends the other day and they didn’t use blurry background but modern films use it so much and all I see is two actors on frame being bounced backwards and forwards in focus, very distracting
@@TopblokeGolf like anything in this world, there’s people who can use techniques and others that can’t. Anything with moderation can be useful. The small amount of blur that the Zv-1 gives , makes the difference from the typical action camera/phone look where everything in focus. Viewer can focus more on subject but overall it just looks a lot more professional or pleasing to my eyes. I’m not saying f0.9 on a full frame , the ZV-1 is f1.8 on a tiny sensor so it’s more like a f4 equivalent which is just a little touch of blur . My point was that on a comparison review it’s important to mention that iPhone can’t have a blurry background in video but the ZB-1 at f1.8 can. But you can raise the f stop to whatever and everything g will be in focus if you want to. On the iPhone you don’t have this option , not even using artificial or computational technology.
You can get about F8 full frame equivalent on the long end with ZV-1, F5 at the wide-end doesn't really do anything. My opinion on this may be affected by the use full frame F1.4 lenses, but I don't think that background blur on compact camera is significant enough to be a decision making factor in this comparison, which is why I didn't mention it. It is included in my "overall look" description. As I wrote, I wouldn't recommend either if you care about background blur. There are some movies and TV shows, where the background blur is overused, The Handmaid's Tale is probably the most extreme example. Having said that, it is definitely a relevant filmmaking technique that always had place in cinematography and that won't change.
@@TheHybridShooter I'm just pointing out a missing aspect that this video didn't mention, it's pretty important imo. I know, It's obvious if you really want bokeh then rather pick mirrorless with good lenses, but compactness is the reason why people need the comparison of these two devices, a bit bokeh on zv1 is better than nothing.

Páči sa my spravodlivé ohodnotenie prístrojov.
Thank you for the detailed review, it was so helpful! BRAVO
I'm really quite frustrated, my phone sorta destroys my TZ200 in almost every single way! Same pixel size, similar levels of maximum zoom, way better low light and video... Bah!
Which one should I buy?
That is what this video is about.
@@TheHybridShooter haha can you make video 13 pro vs zv1.. I don't which one to buy.. zv1 has 1 inch sensor, what about iPhone?
please comapre the zv-1 with the osmo pocket
It is possible that I will make ZV-1 vs Pocket 2, but Osmo Pocket is not on schedule, sorry about that.
Hi i have the Nikon Z50 but i feel that my Oneplus with it computational photography power is better outdoor especially with it HDR capabilities
at night all Nikon APSC Z has slow WIDE ANGLE ZOOM so less light comming.
Even if you decide to buy full frame camera, I don't recommend Nikon Z6.
can i turn off IS on iphone 12 pro max?
Only in filmic pro
iPhone tends to Manipulate the Camera Quality as they upgrade to new iOS.
Just get back to Sony.
Nice information vlog episode ❤️🔥❤️
I just ordered iPhone 13 Pro Max and looking forward testing camera my self personally, I’m strong believer that best camera is the one you have with you so cell phone camera is the way to go for me when my Sony mirrorless camera is left behind.
I’m strong believer that the best camera is either A1 or GFX100S, regardless of whether you have it with you or not.
Here's my biggest issue with the ZV-1: It's not always in my pocket.
On top of that, it costs about as much as my iPhone 12. If I had to choose between an iPhone with amazing cameras, or a camera which is ever so slightly better, then the decision is a no-brainer.
Sure, although the ZV-1 is not just ever so slightly better, the difference is very significant.
Wow! Thanks for the review
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Pardon me asking, is that Linz where you shoot some of the photos?
No, it is Bratislava. Unfortunately, I have never been in Linz.
@@TheHybridShooter some of the street (especially the narrow ones) and the church tower, and the bridge has resemblance to Linz.
I like your point on this video, comparing smartphone with point ond shoot camera. Smartphones are eating the point and shoot camera.
Yes, these central European cities tend to look quite similar.
I think the front facing camera on iPhone 11 took better pics than same on 12 Pro. Software or maybe I’m just doing something wrong?
I don't think so. Front camera is the same on both.
@@TheHybridShooter For some reason my 12 Pro selfies look like they been air brushed. I find nothing in camera settings different from previous phone

I don't have 12 Pro Max, so that is unfortunately not possible.
Thank you for great video? Could u pls compare zv1 with smartphones which have nearly 1inch sensor such as iphone 12 promax, samsung s21 ultra, huawei p40 pro?
Thank you, unfortunately not, I don’t have any of those.
Would you like to comment on the audio quality of the iPhone 12 Pro vs the ZV-1?
No, I wouldn't. I leave that to reviewers who know more about audio.
Well done !
Thank you!
Thanks!
You're welcome!
"As long as it's a Sony A1" 🤣
It all depends on what display are you watching it on . If it's a tv or monitor it's always cameras if it's just a mobile or you tube on your phone then an iPhone is fine
2:27
"The best camera is the one that you have on you...If it's a Sony A1". You had me laughing hard while my wife was like, "what's so funny?".
man all you gotta do is ask youtube your thoughts and here it is lol thank you for the comparison!
Always my pleasure!
Great video as always! The latest iPhones are incredible video cameras. I rarely use them for photos as I have my X-T30 with me most of the time. The joy is really with video. Simple and amazing quality from the 12
i'm still waiting for X-H2 with unlimited 4k video recording
Try to run with ZV-1 and an iPhone and you will see that the video quality and overall impression drops on ZV-1. Every image and video I saw here on the screen are better on iPhone. If you guys want to have something better than iPhone 12, go for more expensive cameras. ZV-1 is not worth talking about, in my opinion. (Just my uneducated opinion)
Why would I run with it?
@@TheHybridShooter Check out other camera reviews and comparisons, you can walk fast or run, this is how people show the stabiliztion of the camera. Walking with ZV-1 without a stabilizer looks much worse. Again, check out other reviews where they test stabilization.
Not to hate on this great video by the way, hope you can get a bit of value from the feedback!
Well, that it exactly why I don't run with cameras. As might have noticed this is not a vlogging review.
@@TheHybridShooter I see! Thanks for responding!
I like the iPhone colors but can’t stand the digital sharpening. Does the zv-1 have the same color science as the a7siii or a7iii? Sony’s changed so many times that I get confused. (Glad they do it though)
It isn’t 100% identical on any two Sony models , but it is very similar.
Good review
Thank you!
I find it crazy that the Xiaomi Mi 11 ultra has a GN2 1/1.2" inch sensor. Thats 16% less than the sensor on the ZV1!
It is a huge smartphone with much larger footprint than the ZV-1, so I don’t find it that crazy.
The next step for iPhone is to incorporate AI-based sharpening (such as that done by Topaz software). That really is like voodoo what it does sometimes.
I don't think so. There is plenty of AI sharpening software, but you can't replace detail. The only solutions are lower pixel density or better lens.
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra comes with 1/1.12" sensor size!! Almost as big as ZV1
It is a huge phablet with much larger footprint than the ZV-1, so I don't find it to be that amazing...
I'm always glad to see such comparisons. Compact cameras are very important to me from the privacy POV. I consider it important to be able to shoot with great quality offline without analysis by any online or connected AI. So, yeah, thumbs up from tinfoil hat heads. ;)
I don't shoot anything confidential, so I don't really care about that, but I think that it is possible to turn off the AI analysis in iPhone.
Itd be nice to have seen 12 Pro Max instead. Much better.
Sure, but I am not willing to use oversized smartphone just because of the larger sensor and I don’t like 70mm on telephoto camera, so I only have regular 12 Pro.
Most reviews I've watched show little difference in picture-quality, between any of the iPhone 12's.....even the mini does amazing
Would be neat to see other smartphones, my particular phone has the same pixel density as my 1 inch TZ200! There's another phone which just has a 1 inch sensor!
I wish point and shoots did the on-the-fly stacking that some smartphones do!
Bratislava!
Even a vintage *"Box Brownie Junior"* is better than any phone camera, for one simple reason.................... It will never ring and annoy you whilst you are taking a photo! Good vid mate.
Thank you, but you can simply turn on airplane mode on smartphone, so that is really not an issue.
@@TheHybridShooter What is really impressive, you actually still take the time to answer comments............. and that is one of the reasons you deserve that silver play button! Not long now. ;-)
Thank you!
Smart phone with 1 inch sensor, end of the game.
Not really, phone size necessary to house 1" sensor would take away of the smartphone convenience.
@@TheHybridShooter there are already some phones with 1 inch sensor, LEICA for example. They all have normal size.
@@陈一峰-y1r That is clearly a phablet, 6,6" size is an instant deal breaker for a lot of users
@@TheHybridShooter But still more convenient than one phone+one camera
Definitely not for everyone. I have talked about that in the video.
You're welcome! If bokeh is that important to you, I would probably get something with interchangeable lenses.
Well. iPhone does not have the optical zoom range of my RX100 VII.
1:14 LOL
Imagine Sony Hardware + Apple Software
Apple already uses Sony hardware.
@@TheHybridShooter I see. That's great.
Panasonic LX10 would like a word with you.
I wouldn’t like a word with Panasonic LX10.
BOKEH, that's the biggest difference imo, especially in video, where smartphone still couldn't simulate the bokeh, unlike with photo.
If you care about bokeh, I would choose something completely different.
You can get about F8 full frame equivalent on the long end with ZV-1, F5 at the wide-end doesn't really do anything. Páči sa my spravodlivé ohodnotenie prístrojov. Už si nemôžeme zatvárať oči pred iPhonom, sám som robil porovnania a môžem povedať len Wau.....malinký čip, malinké šošovky neuveriteľné čo dokážu z toho MULTI-ZARIADENIA vymáčknuť, keď to porovnávam s omoc väčšími snímačmi a šošovkami čo mám doma u foťákov.

iPhone video will fall apart in night time video compared ro Sony ZV 1, that shows you the power of a 1 inch sensor compact camera over any smartphone .. disappointed that it was not shown in this video
I don’t recommend either for low light video. The result will either be bad or very bad.
Get at least APS-C camera if you need to shoot at night.

You can even spend 5000$ on a Camara, but if you use it like a smartphone the difference will be always very little in this kind of context.
That depends on viewing / publication platform. If that is good enough there will be a huge difference even if you use $5000 camera like a smartphone.
